It is in Olustee Park which is city property. The Battle of Olustee took place in 1864, the largest engagement fought in Florida. Union General Truman Seymour had landed troops at Jacksonville and marched on Tallahassee. General Alfred H. Colquitt was in command of a reinforcement group headed to defend the state capitol. They fought near Lake City. Evenly matched strength, the Union took 1861 casualties compared to the Confederates 949. Is is considered a Confederate victory. The Union losses caused Northern authorities to question the necessity of further Union involvement in the militarily insignificant state of Florida. The obelisk was unveiled in 1928, a full 63 years after the end of the Civil War. Lake City and Columbia County were "Deep South" for quite some time, even into the 1970s when the school district was finally desegregated. The inscription on the obelisk reads, "This monument erected to perpetuate in loving memory the 151 soldiers of the Confederate Army who lost their lives in the battle at Olustee and who now lie buried in Oaklawn Cemetery, Lake City, Florida." The museum is small and it won't take long to go through, but it is well organized and staffed by very friendly volunteers. There is a good sized parking lot behind the museum and the bathrooms were very tidy. There is no admission fee but they do have a donation jar. Please bring a little cash and consider donating if you visit. I bet they have a shoe string budget and can use every dollar received.

He wasn't on his phone yapping the ENTIRE trip like the other drives do which is distracted driving to me. I give 5 stars. Don't know his name but I gave enough information for you know who he is.. btw.. The actual bus terminals on in horrible disgusting shape.

She is the one that…read moreat 4:48 turns to Melissa to say she is calling at 9 minutes til to get added for a visit which by the way let me explain that process. One must call after you've been added to the list and merely give a dob and drivers license number that takes their system 15 minutes to update to add you. I spoke with Melissa at 8:24 am on my drive in to work and she says I have to update the system not telling me the process. Sharon if that's her name turns to Melissa to find this out and has a 6 minute argument in hopes of not having to do her job. I asked her if her salary was paid by the tax payers for which she response yes and tell her I know my family didn't matter to her but felt she should be the servant she's paid to be. She begrudging got my info added and then hung up on me. At 4:55 PM I call back Melissa answers I guess they got caller ID so Sharon don't want to talk or maybe that was it since it was 12 til and she would have to work 2 minutes over her was logged out and GONE. I ask Melissa if Mark Hunter was still sheriff and go over the fact their job is just like mine customer service and let them know how poor it was. If it weren't so sad it would be pathetic. Columbia county tax dollars wasted on two individuals that don't want to do what they are paid to do their JOB. I look forward to suggesting to the Sheriff that since the phone is automated why don't they get the 2 pieces of info DOB and DL tell the caller to call back I'm 15 minutes to get the visit and we can eliminate one salary all together lay her off or better yet schedule the visit via phone or web site and eliminate both since they don't want to do their JOB.
