This is the Sacramento branch. I've been helping my wife deal with this company. They are unprofessional to say the least, say they will call with news on a certain date but rarely do. A simple financial operation is taking many weeks which is to our detriment to the point I'm looking at hiring a lawyer as they are failing in their fiduciary duty and will be held responsible for any losses. read more

After my wife's intial move to H_M, I too rolled my retirement account into H_M.in 2010, Now, July, 2013, we continue to be more than satisfied. Another reviewer intimated that my origianal review had been a cut and past job. Had this person checked, he would have found that I've been yelping as a Yelp Elite for over 5 years and in no way would that have ever happened. We have other choices and choose to drive the 65 miles to H-M for their excelllent services. Characterized by poor service and excessive fees. They quickly pigeon hole your portfolio according to your risk tolerance. And, then let their algorithms do the rest. They resist when you request specific investments. But, do nothing when your portfolio is laying there lifeless. Mine put on 1% while the DOW added 9%. Paid over $1000 per month for that. II did not attend the all day conference, since I am not sure, it will be beneficial. However, Allworth representative followed up with me, and connected me to one of their financial advisors. I supplied my estimated fixed costs plus income, and assets and liabilities. When I talked to the consultant over the phone, he reviewed my numbers on the phone, and made the following responses - 1. Long term insurance, which I have, commented you must have an elderly person living with us. I take that remark as personal. 2. Social Security - He commented that my spouse will be relying on my SS based on my high earning's history - another personal question that he should not ask. Furthermore, my spouse made very good decisions with regards to our retirement, plus we leverage her strengths in contracts and real estate. 3. Self-directed Ira - Oh, you have to get an annual appraisal for your properties from an appraiser. I responded, no. I just need to get the value from either realtor or Redfin web sites per the IRA provider. Unwillingness, I suggested to come out to my workplace to meet, and he refused via strongly suggestion. He made a comment, when you get your teeth cleaned, you can meet him at his office. Well, I informed him that my employer has onsite dentistry. In summary, he knew my employer, and is highly rated. Second his knowledge is lacking in the self-directed ira. Third he did not listen to his client to understand the client's knowledge and finances, information provided. Overall, he treated like an idiot, and I do take offense to it. My intent is to plug my knowledge gaps, and make adjustments to my financial plans. Nevertheless, he is an idiot based on my knowledge is stronger on retirement planning compared to his.  My profession is risk management for chemical operations. My advice is similar to Seven Habits for Highly Effective People such as - 1. First Seek to Understand Before Being Understood - he did not. 2. Begin with the End in Mind - Should have reviewed the client's financials to understand what he could help - he did not. 3. Seek Win Win - He wanted a Win - Lose by adding the client to his list. 4. Put First Things First - He did not come up with ideas during the phone call. Recommendation - Your financial advisors should take a course on Seven Habits for Highly Effective People. Our family worked with Hanson McClain for several years and they handled multiple retirement accounts as well as a significant portion of our non-retirement money. We found that while their front desk staff and the assistants in the office were kind and attentive, the advisers and those who make the investment decisions lacked follow through and discipline. I again thank you for your comment but i stand by my review of this investment firm and strongly advise others to thoroughly research all the investment options that may be available to them. We had Hanson and McClain for about 8 years for our retirement accounts. Recently they redesigned the way they do business. My husband had about a 100,000 dollar inheritance that was with another financial advisor which we wanted to talk to our financial advisor about moving to Hanson McClain. After several months of unanswered emails and promises of calls to be returned we gave up and changed to the other company. I dont believe they are interested in the average investor anymore. We are relatively new clients. We left two other brokerage firms as we were not satisfied with their service. It seems as soon as they had our money we never heard from them again. Hanson McClain is quite the opposite. We get emails weekly with all kinds of information. We just attended a free dinner with a presentation on what makes a successfully retirement. Called about an old annuity I need to 1035 exchange, redeem or annuitize. They just said we don't recommend annuities and could not give me any advice, pretty rude, and incompetent. I live in DFW and listen to the HM radio show on podcast. They are one of several shows that I listen to, in order to augment my general knowledge of retirement issues. I really enjoy the call ins and real advice near the end. I did reach out to them at one point as a second opinion on my current fiduciary planner and was told that 'eh, looks like you are in good shape. We would love to have your business, but your current provider appears to have you well in hand'. Tip of the hat for integrity there.... Through the radio show, they have taught me a lot about balance, patience and learning to live with risk. With the exception of commissioned based products like annuities (which they say is an absolute no no)...They almost never have an absolute answer, but rather 'it depends', which is as it should be. That being said, I can absolutely recommend them highly as good entertaining advice and possibly as a provider. read more

I worked in the front office at Hanson McClain for almost seven years and left in 2011 to open my own business in a totally different industry. I have nothing but good things to say about Hanson McClain. I can only speak about my experience during that time, but it was was very positive. It started from the top. The founders, Pat and Scott are devoted to the clients of Hanson McClain, and they expect everyone in the company to be client-focused also. That was not hard for us to do, as the company's expectations and methods for accomplishing that were clearly spelled out, and because the people they hired as advisors, management, and staff were (and probably still are) a great group of people who work together smoothly with mutual support. Everyone's goals are the same as the founders'. You either support that or you're out. It's the Hanson McClain culture. When the financial market took a nose dive in 2008/2009 we, and probably everyone else in the industry, were severely strained. We had tons of phone calls from frightened clients. Some of them left for other financial management firms. Somehow they thought that maybe they would benefit from moving away. But, do you know what? A lot of them returned to us! They saw that their financial picture didn't quickly improve with new management (I know, because they told me) and they understood that we were there for them for the long haul. And we were. I saw the people who arrived for their appointments daily. I heard their stories of faith and trust. I rejoiced with them as they told me that they were excited that they were going to retire well-positioned to meet their financial goals, or that they were financially ready to retire earlier than they expected. One of the selling points for me of Hanson McClain is that the advisors do not earn any commissions. They are free to recommend the investments that they think will work for each individual. My wife and I gave them $1,000,000 to invest for retirement. We told them they could make the investment decisions but we did not want them to sell 10 of the stocks that we transferred. It took them 60 days to sell 5 of the 10 we asked (in writing) for them not to sell. They then made us "whole" and 30 days after sold the same five stocks again! Our investment adviser apologized for the multiple human errors and we left Hanson McClain Advisers for another broker. What we very disappointing was never hearing from Hanson or McClain. Guess our $1 million was not important to them. I would not recommend this firm and don't believe their advertisements. They let us walk without a word. read more

Before investing with HM, I did quite a bit of research on financial advisor firms. I was previously with ML and Wells Fargo and although I'm generally pleased with my results, most of it was due to my (lucky) investment strategy since I received little to no personal consulting from either. Still with many years to go to retirement and not wanting to push my "luck", I wanted a firm with a more personal approach and an advisor who would understand ME and my family's needs and goals. Needless to say, my research and the numerous recommendations I received paid off and I couldn't be happier with HM. Although I know there are no guarantees to investing, the simple fact that they listen and consult to provide me with the options that I eventually decide upon is very informative and reassuring. Not a good firm to work with. Our accounts have performed miserably over the years and they seem to have a high turnover in staff. They set appointments to meet once a year, but when you go in they avoid talking about how terrible their investment "model" has done. There are plenty of firms in Sacramento to help you with your money... use anyone else. One point that really bothered me is that I found them on the radio on a conservative station only to find out they work with and donate to Unions. read more
