I had a great adventure with Chris at Almost Heaven. You can book and pay for your trip in advance easily, and everything was ready when I arrived. I had gone solo and ended up with a really friendly group of folks who had booked the same time. Chris made sure to get us all introduced and gave a quick demo, and then launched us one by one. He was so friendly and informative, we all had a wonderful time! It was a nice calm paddle around the bay, and then he took us to a little beach and went to find some little invertebrates that live in the mangroves - jellyfish, sponges, urchins and we talked about those animals while taking a short break before entering the tunnels. The mangroves are primordial, trees up above and the roots coming up around your boat. The water is very calm, and kind of clear, and we saw sponges, coral, and starfish as we paddled through. Chris kept a good pace and if anybody lagged behind (often me, gawking at stuff), kept up a great conversation with the rest of the group so everybody was having a good time while both paddling and waiting. We arrived there in late afternoon. They were still able to rent kayaks to us. They provided wet bags, maps and clear instructions. Everything went well. We really enjoyed exploring the area. Next day we realized we left one of our car keys in the wet bags they provided. We called them, we were able to get it back. They are very friendly, honest and kind. We wanted to use kayaks outside of a formal tour and they let me meet them at 11 o'clock to fit our schedule. They were also very competitive. We booked with Chris for the 4 o'clock kayak adventure.We had a large family group and were pleasantly surprised with his ability to accommodate our group. Get ready to paddle! The pace of our trip was nice and Chris really knew his facts about the local geography and wildlife. Cormorants caught fish all around us and we saw plenty of crabs in the mangrove tunnels. It was really nice finding someone like Chris for this adventure. It was the last tour on a Friday evening and he didn't skip a beat. We have been going to Sarasota for several years but have never taken the time to go thru the mangroves. This is definitely somewhere we will be returning to! It was easy to find, they have a decent sized parking lot with a nice restroom facility. Be sure to bring your sunscreen, water bottles and phone for taking pictures! We started out going into the gulf to look for manatees. It was a nice little trip out but unfortunately we didn't end up seeing any! It was slightly windy and paddling was a tad bit difficult. Luckily for us everyone in our party was in good shape so we didn't have any problems. After returning from the gulf we started in on the mangrove tunnel tours. Such an amazing sight to see! We saw tiny black spider crabs in the trees. We did see several species of birds on the tour also. There were some places thru the tunnels that it was a little difficult to maneuver your kayak thru so we would just lay our oars down and grab the branches with our hands to guide us thru. The tour itself lasts around 2 hours and is well worth the time. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and a lot of fun. read more

Well done tour. Chris and Brittany were wonderful. Very casual and easy to laugh with. The two navigated the mangroves with all 31 of our girls soccer team with their parents. My only criticism, not having any one to run out unruly teens from harassing and acting out in front of a pack of teenage girls. Not that they could have done anything, however another person patrolling ahead could have been helpful. Another helpful hint... give everyone a dry bag, don't ask, just give it. It would save people's wallets, watches, phones and earbuds. Plus, you might just charge extra for it. read more

Will provides an excellent understanding and tour of Myakka State Park. Tandem kayaks are available and be sure to bring a credit card to enjoy lunch at the Myakka snack bar, which also includes a gift shop and bathrooms. We experienced an unusually high water event, which Will says occurs only a few times a year and glided over normally landlocked paths and tree trunks. If you enjoy birding, Will is an expert and we saw a tricolored heron, great blue herons, ibis and cormorants. The most exciting event was watching a 12 foot gator try to sneak up on a great white heron--the bird hopped away! I highly recommend Will and his company Almost Heaven Kayak Adventures. read more
