I worked with the North Haledon branch and can't say enough about these guys. They are amazing. I have had extensive pruning, some removal of dead trees, and, this time, a decision on a struggling tree over a hundred years old and close to 2 houses. I talked to several companies before choosing Almstead. They were impressive from start to finish and had competitive pricing. Their arborist, ISA certified in tree risk assessment, gave me strategies and probabilities around possible care for the tree, but also an honest appraisal of the situation. Due to its location, I took it down. They are a team of true professionals - knowledgeable, skilled, and responsible. I have never seen a tree company operate like they did. Everything was totally under control which, considering the location, was a major relief. This is a difficult and dangerous job, but they handled it like clockwork, as if it were nothing. The guy that did the final cleanup, removing the last of a tremendous amount of wood was also amazing. I watched as he became plastered with wood chips, working in the cold and, at times, heavy rain to make sure everything was cleaned up, refusing to take a break, saying it had to be finished on schedule, and asking for approval at the end. Almstead was accommodating in every way possible, including moving quickly, which was a concern to me. The entire process could not have gone more smoothly. They were honest, pleasant, and did what they said when they said. They supplied all necessary insurance and license info well in advance. No problems or delays. I have been using Almstead for many years now. They always do a superior job. Although I miss Jon, I just had a tree taken down and another trimmed and they did a great job. The workers were professional and cleaned up well after the job. Safa, who works in the office is exceptional. Always very pleasant and personable. She always follows through and returns calls. Super disappointed with this company. Had service tech spray my trees. He spent a total of four minutes getting into my backyard, spraying 10 40 foot tall trees and going back to the truck. There is no way that 10 large trees could be coated in that amount of time. I called the company multiple times and no one bothered to get back to me. They also sprayed my trees only a couple of weeks apart so that they could bill me for the full season of spraying. They've lost me as a customer. I would never use them or recommend them. read more

Awful company, look elsewhere. I think this is the first negative review I've ever written. They never call back or respond and it took months to schedule a hedge trimming. They finally came and butchered the hedge and left saplings they were supposed to remove. My neighbor looked like she might cry when she saw it. My 5 year old gasped and asked why they made the hedge so ugly. I immediately asked what happened and sent pictures to the arborist. He said he would look at it and follow up and we never heard back. The receptionist was nice on the phone and said she would speak with the manager and get back to me. Fast forward to several calls and emails later and I cannot get someone to respond to me and they just keep sending bills with added late fee charges even after telling me I didn't have to pay any late fee. If someone called me and apologized and explained what happened, I would have just paid my bill and moved on. Everyone makes mistakes. But the dishonesty and lack of accountability is not ok. Almstead has been treating and healing our trees for many years and they have consistently been competent and reliable. Most recently they came to take down a large dead tree in our backyard. The problem was that the trunk and roots of the tree were in our yard, but all the dead branches were overhanging in our neighbors yard. Almstead managed to work through two neighboring backyards as well as ours and successfully took down the tree to fence height without harming a single leaf, branch, or blade of grass on all our properties. And they were very pleasant and cooperative to boot! I would definitely recommend them for further jobs as needed. read more

True professionals who get the job done right on the first try. The arborists they sent to my house was clearly someone who studied horticulture and not a side hustler. They care about their work. Not cheap! But perfectly executed. I hired them after I hired numerous others who kept doing shoddy work, which ultimately cost me more than hiring Almstead. Fine. Last week's storm was too much for a tree on my property. During one of the wind gust, a large brand cracked and landed partially on my roof and my wooden fence. I was recommended this service by a neighbor who saw a few screenshots and my request on the nextdoor app. I got several quotes, however, Almstead's was the best. The crew showed up Monday morning like they said they would and got to work. They removed the broken branch and took down the sick tree. Because the price was so reasonable, I was able to have several branches removed from my neighbor's roof. The crew was professional and cleaned up the work area. I met Oscar who's crew did the work. The account manager I had was someone I worked with the year prior before he joined the company and was great. But, now with Almstead, QC was very poor. We had a dual birthday party for our two little kids coming up, that Almstead was aware of, but despite my inquiries nothing was scheduled yet on their end for them to come and pull all the strangler vines and trim the bushes, etc. So a few weeks later I began trying to pull out the vines myself, resulting in too many breaking midway down and too challenging to reach into the prickly bushes to extract from the roots. Plus, I was too busy pulling all of the weeds throughout the property that kept growing back. Truly a challenging year with weeds. Then Almstead called the next day to schedule their coming a few days later. I expressed the issue of the half broken vines that I did myself as I haven't heard back from them and didn't know when they'd come, and if they could move the date back to be closer to the party so that everything would be more fresh. They said it would be fine by the party still if they come as they scheduled. Come the party a few weeks later and strangler vines were protruding from numerous areas and their trimming wasn't fully clean when they finished. I actually had to go out and trim up their work in some spots as well as pull more strangler vines before people showed. If you've hosted parties, you know that's the last thing you have time for with ask of the other prep work needed. For $911.64 either do it yourself or hire someone else that you can manage out trust to do a decent job for a fraction of the price. read more

I had this service come out in the fall of 2020 for a peach tree that was damaged in a storm. They trimmed it and fertilized it. Which cost a lot of money. In the spring it was doing well. They wanted to come back and service again in the spring of 2021. I said, I don't need the service as the tree is doing fine. I left several messages stating I do not need services and even spoke to someone to say do not have anyone come to my home without my approval. if I need service I will let you know. I received a bill this October,2022. A year later. I called again leaving several messages stating I never asked for service and how do you come here without my knowledge or approval. how do I even know you came here? They stated service was done and I have to put in writing that I no longer need service. I said, no one EVER stated that to me! this is ridiculous. I have never heard of such a thing. How sneaky and dishonest can a company get. I am not paying this bill. I never asked or approved service. I never was even told someone (that's if they really did) came. Then I get a bill a year later! I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone. read more

Something is just not right here. I hired the service for one year to handle the chemicals and fertilizers for my lawn and shrubs. I also hired them to remove a tree after a storm. The gentleman who performed the services was very nice BUT.. At the end of one year, the lawn did not look better in fact it looked worse. I had pre-paid for all the services and paid the worker for the removal of the tree the day it was done at the request of my representative. I verbally terminated the services at the end of one year. Two years later I started receiving bills with late fees or services that were either paid for or were after I had terminated the company. They also indicated that they had Lost the check for the tree removal. I sent them a new check for the the tree removal ( which I've come to learn was exorbitantly expensive) After numerous calls to the office and sending copies of checks. I continue to receive bills with late fees for services that were either paid for or beyond the termination date. It's just not worth it look elsewhere. After this debacle, I hired TRUGREEN and things are looking way better! read more

We had a very old and large oak tree right front and center of our front yard. They also cut down a large maple tree on the side of my house. You could barely even see my house. My front yard was completely covered with acorns. I called almstead and I received a proposal within a couple of days. Within 2 weeks they were ready to start the work. Oscar and his crew went really above and beyond. I have never seen my front yard look so clean. I'm so grateful that I got to work for them for a 2nd time. These guys really know what they are doing. They addressed all of my concerns beforehand and I just knew I was in good hands. I will never call another company to cut down my trees. read more

BEWARE !!! They butchered my beautiful red maple tree !!!! I went into great detail how I wanted ONLY a few branches to be trimmed from my tree at the tips. The next thing I know there were huge branches (10-15 feet long) being cut and falling down to the ground. I literally screamed for him to stop. Do not trust these guys at all. You cannot grow back branches that were recklessly cut. My tree looks horrible now and all the shade it gave from the sun is gone !!!! read more
