There's a bar back I met there wearing a Hawaiian shirt and the only Hawaiian thing about him is that he wanted to get lai-ed.

Finally remembered to check Oké Poké and finally (thanks wikipedia) understand what poké is!…read more So I guess nothing Oké Poké sells is the most traditional Hawaiian raw fish salad (fatty tuna or octopus) but it seems that the ahi tuna version they have is sort of the modern classic. They also have lots of other variations with some really fun flavour combinations and if raw fish isn't your thing then check out the chicken/prawn/tofu options. Aside from 5 set options, there's the option to put your own together. So I have been confused about what I've heard poké's relationship to sushi and how sometimes it's like a giant sushi roll but basically the whole poké concept is very much influenced by different flavours from Asian cuisine and the normal salad version is compared to 'deconstructed sushi' (or, surely, chirashi). So basically if you want the most classic version here, go for the ahi tuna bowl which is fish salad on top of rice. This is also better if you're hungry as there is slightly more food (for £1 more). The sushi roll thing is the pokérito - so called as it is effectively a sushi burrito. It as far as I can tell is a modern fusion invention not necessarily from Hawaii at all. I gave it a go (as following all this on the day research I realised I have def already tried 'normal' poké although did not realise it at the time - ha!) and really enjoyed it. I particularly liked the wakame, sesame seeds and the nice hint of ginger in the sauce. Server was very friendly and helpful about the menu. It's a tad expensive for an everyday lunch at £6.95 for the pokerito and £7.95 for the poke bowl and while I am trying to eat less and found the portion size fine, those who prefer to feel really full may be unsatisfied. I will definitely return though. It's fun, different and healthy and for once Manchester isn't 8 years behind a food craze!

I had the kimchi tofu jigae and the kimchi pancake which was pretty big but tasted amazing. In the jigae they also added a poached egg into it which gave it a nice taste, and the spicy factor was perfect; not too spicy. The service is average bit efficient, the food came quite quickly and another good thing is that banchan is served complimentary here, which doesn't seem to be the case with many UK korean restaurants. They also have some Japanese dishes on the menu like sushi, gyoza, temaki and teriyaki. There is parking right outside and it's pay and display but very cheap: 50p for 30 mins and £1 for an hour. The atmosphere is very casual like a cafe, so it's great for lunch as well as dinner. Overall, authentic and tasty Korean food that's well priced and made to a great standard.

This is probably the worst place to get fish 'n' chips 'n' Chinese in the whole of Formby, it's not terrible especially - there are just far better places out there (see how I refrained manfully from using 'plaices'). What Crispy Cod Formby does very, very well is kebabs and burgers - this might seem odd for somewhere that so prides itself on fish that it puts the name of a fish that it doesn't in fact serve up in backlit plastic, but there it is. Donner or chicken, 'Hawaiian' (served with pineapple ring - exotic) or 'king' (served with an egg - regal) the kebabs and burgers are the reason to get takeaway from here. Just avoid the pizzas, fish and chip shop selling pizzas; it's just a step too far. It's just wrong man. Just wrong.

I also distinctly remember the owner, who always sported a cap and an absolutely excellent moustache (the skill of moustache grooming is a fine art). This establishment has since changed hands however and the change was not a particularly positive one in my opinion. The chips they do are average and the portions compared to their rivals are pretty small, plus they serve you chips in a little tray which kind of spoils the whole chips-wrapped-up-in-paper thing (it's just not the same when you have a tray supporting them, they should just slip everywhere as you struggle to eat them). They also do the usual Chinese dishes, burgers (which are pretty good, actually), kebabs and pizzas. I generally avoid getting things like kebabs and pizzas in chippies though, I feel that they are best left to proper kebab and pizza shops because when chippies have their fingers in too many pies, they usually end up doing everything a bit crap rather than excelling at a few things. I'm quite a fan of the fish tank in there though; thankfully, they don't put its contents in the deep fat fryer (far too small).

When you get in (and you could be waiting outside for a while on a Friday or Saturday as it's only small and VERY popular) you are greeted by a decor which is at once understated and incredibly clearly themed. You just feel like you're in Prohibition era in the Deep South. The staff come over with cocktail menus and glasses of water (again, very cool - this is no place for binge drinking) and give you plenty of time to pick your drink which is just as well as there is a LOT to choose from. The cocktails are sorted into spirit based groups which makes things pretty easy if you're a gin person versus a whisky person. Myself, I was immediately drawn to a cocktail called the Corpse Reviver. Not that I particularly needed reviving - it just sounded fun. It was. This is a lovely place to start, end or spend your entire night if you enjoy a relaxed and cool atmosphere and being able to hear yourself and your companions speak. Very classy joint indeed.
