We sat at the bottom of the ocean with lights and HUGE manta rays swam all around us! Kate was our dive guide and I can't remember the snorkel guides name but they were both great! I hadn't dove in about 2 years and Kate was so patient with me. I was a little nervous but she made me feel at ease. My husband even saw a baby tiger shark when he was snorkeling! They provided fruit, hummus sandwiches and drinks. If you're on the Big Island this is a must! They even took go pro videos and sent them to us!!

After 1-2 hours of snorkeling, we boarded the boat to try the water slide and second floor diving board. It was super fun. The crew provided sandwiches, chips, fruit and soda/water. On the way back we hugged the coastline for great pictures. We stopped and watched a pod of dolphins who came to the boat. It was a magical tour for any snorkeling lover. IMHO this is the best all-around snorkeling beach on the…read moreisland, but as with any ocean activity the surf and tide will affect your experience, so ask the lifeguards or the volunteers for advice. This protected bay has over 120 species of resident fish, and usually has clear water. Other than urchins (7 species) there is no marine life to worry about. Turtle sitings are more likely at high tide when their salad bar (the algae on the rocks) is available. Typically from 9 to 3 daily the Reef Teach volunteers have photo guide books and other reference materials available, along with free advice, defog spray, and reef-safe sunscreen. Water access is the narrow and shallow rocky channel in front of the lifeguard station by the parking and pavilion. Swim fins or sand shoes are recommended. The locals value their feet and swim through it even at low tide when it is only a foot deep. Coming back in you can actually swim all the way back to the sandy channel. The water is usually noticeably warmer and clearer away from the entry. The bay is shallow with only a few places that are even 8' deep at high tide. Unless you really need to, don't stand on the bottom or coral - fins and feet damage it.

That's right, there are two ways to reach this beautiful white sand beach and gem by hiking, and the path I took was via the Kekaha Kai State Park's main parking lot, and first that is a rough 20-minute drive with 4x4 vehicles like Jeeps from Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway to that trailhead. Then it's about another 30-minute hike in each direction and you go on lots of loose lava rocks and it can get hot, so make sure you have sunscreen, a good bucket hat, and plenty of water. I don't know about the second way in, so I could not speak to that method. But in any case, it is so worth the time and effort when it was all said and done. There were a few crowds when getting to Makalawena Beach but not super busy at all. You'll find other tide pools, palm trees, and other native plants. Waves are rather rough at times, but it is still swimmable for the most part.

It's fun watching people ride the waves too. It's not the biggest area but so beautiful. There are a lot of people so it can get crowded. I had so much fun!

My wife and I were staying at HGV King's Land with our 15 year old son and some friends from Michigan, when our son met the owner Kris and his father at the resort. Our son meeting and speaking with Kris turned our vacation into one of our most unforgettable trips. During their conversation, Kris mentioned that he owned Aloha Ocean Excursions and that one of their excursions was the Evening Manta Ray Snorkel. I contacted Kris later that evening, and he was by far one of the most friendliest and nicest persons I have met, answering all of my questions and concerns and even went into details about what we could expect from our excursion. We scheduled our trip and met with the boat Captain Rasson at the pier pavilion who was every bit as friendly and nice as Kris. Once we arrived at the Manta Ray snorkel site, Rasson explained to us the safety aspect and how to get the most out of our Manta Ray viewing. Once we were in the water and at the light bar, the show began. The Manta Ray's began feeding almost instantly, coming within inches of you and giving us a show that I have never believe possible. This graceful feeding show, continued for the entire time that we were out there and Rasson never once rushed us or called us in from the fun. He allowed us to stay out in the water and enjoy every minute of it and I was the last one in from the water due to the amount of fun/excitement I was having. I had my GoPro with me and I was able to take some beautiful videos of the Manta Ray's during our trip. I wasn't aware that the Evening Manta Ray Snorkeling was something that could be done, and we are so thankful for Kris bringing this to our attention. This was an unbelievable experience and opportunity that we are truly thankful for. We highly recommend Kris and Aloha Ocean Excursions for that trip of a lifetime that you will never forget. Our crew included Mike, Justin, Eric, and another Mike (I think!). I wish they had introduced themselves a little more clearly because every one of them deserved recognition--they were all fantastic. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, but what stood out most was how genuinely respectful and non-judgmental the entire crew was. At many popular tourist attractions, it's understandable that after giving the same presentation countless times, things can start to feel rushed or impersonal. That was absolutely not the case here. Every crew member seemed genuinely happy to be there. They welcomed every question with patience and respect, and if the answer to something was "no," they took the time to explain why instead of simply dismissing it. As a parent, I especially appreciated this because it's just as valuable for children as it is for adults. Justin did an amazing job teaching us about manta rays before we got in the water. He took the time to show everyone charts and photos, explain their behavior, and answer questions. It made the experience much more meaningful than simply showing up and jumping in the water. Once we were in the water, one of my kids became a little overwhelmed by all the gear and new variables. Mike handled it beautifully. He stayed calm, encouraged them to sit on top of the float board until they felt comfortable, and made sure they were doing okay before moving the board farther from the boat. That patience and reassurance made a huge difference. I have two suggestions that aren't complaints at all--just ideas that I think would make an already excellent experience even better. First, it would be helpful to give guests a quick overview of the evening at the very beginning. Something like: "We'll have about a __-minute boat ride out, anchor at the site, pass out and fit gear, wait for sunset, then enter the water one at a time and hold onto the floating boards for about 45 minutes before returning to the boat and heading back to the harbor." Having that roadmap would have helped both my kids and me know exactly what to expect. Second, I would recommend letting guests know to bring an extra towel to sit on during the boat ride. The ridged metal benches became a little uncomfortable after a while, and a folded towel would have made a big difference (we were allowed to move around the boat which was also awesome- just for those who didn't want to). Overall, this was an incredible experience. We came for the manta rays, but what we'll remember just as much is the crew. They were knowledgeable, professional, patient, and genuinely passionate about what they do. We felt welcomed as people--not just another group of tourists--and that made all the difference. I would absolutely recommend Manta Ray Dives of Hawaii.

There was also hot chocolate offered, ginger chews, complimedry drinks, and we seemed to be in the water lonever than most the other companies. We also were given a thorough brief and while in the water we're being educated and guided regarding the mantas. One of the best experiences I've ever had and I am an avid scuba diver who has traveled the world.

My only feedback is that he should raise his voice and project more so that everyone aboard can hear the great information he has to offer! The cruise was about an hour each way, and then we spent another hour in the water snorkeling. It was my first time doing so, and I felt very safe and comfortable the whole time! There are tons of colorful tropical fish to observe in the warm, clear waters of Kealakekua Bay. Good choice if you want to try snorkeling!

While we didn't partake in the breakfast fruit or mini muffins on board, the pre-departure coffee was welcome and yummy. On the return, we greatly appreciated and enjoyed our boxed lunches (the salad was particularly great!). We had the option for complimentary light drinks or to purchase cocktails but just drank our water. Then we did the really late night manta snorkel, which was intense but truly awesome -- the mantas came within inches of our faces repeatedly, and we were often surrounded by a school of decently sized fish. Because everyone in the group is lined up along the same lighted board, you're very close to your neighbors, but the sea life is so majestic that you barely notice anything above the water. Cocktails available for purchase on the way there, and complimentary hot cocoa on the way back. We had the same competent and professional, yet friendly, crew for both outings. They prioritized both safety and comfort. We had plenty of time in the water. Boat was clean and well-stocked (including the bathroom and when my daughter needed a band-aid). They played fun music. Masks fit us well and didn't fog up. Other provided gear included noodles to make floating easier, reef safe sunscreen for the day snorkel, and wetsuit tops for the night snorkel. Jack and Brayden did an excellent job of explaining the life of manta rays and how to identify each one while we were in the water. A big thank you to Brayden for be encouraging and keeping me calm while in the water. He knew I was a good swimmer, but am very nervous in deep water. Brayden was very good at informing us when a ray was getting close and to just stay still and calm if one were to get too close to our bodies. He did a wonderful job with keeping us safe, informed with marine life, and gave clear directions as to what we needed to do to get in the water, while we were in the water, and with how to get out of the water back onto the boat. From the beginning our tour guides, Brie and Natalie were so helpful and sweet. They remembered all of our names in the party of 11. They explained the process from the beginning to the end, and were very patient in answering all of our questions as well as all the kids. Captain Jared was also great. He was always asking if we were okay and if we were having a great time. As soon as we were all suited with wetsuits and snorkeling gear and went into the water, we immediately saw a giant manta ray who came up close. The kids all started freaking out and were yelling with excitement through their scuba gear. Again, Brie and Natalie were awesome in the water. They asked if we were all okay and they were just so wonderful. Unfortunately, two of us in the group got seasick, but Brie, while holding a kid swam us back to the boat. Although the boat was not close, I felt safe in the water and felt like we were being escorted back to the boat by Wonder Woman. I truly believed she could of saved all 3 of us if needed. The captain was also kind to my friend and me and offered us advice on trying to feel better. He offered us beverages and a small snack if we wanted. Once the rest of the group finished, they all had snacks and drinks waiting for them. In the end, we all had an awesome and unforgettable time. The whole group had a once in a lifetime experience and were guided by knowledgeable, friendly, and a wonderful group of people. We are so thankful for them and would highly recommend them.

We saw many schools of fish, coral, sea urchins, and learned interesting facts about the sea life we were viewing. It was nice to relax under a cool shade and be provided a water or ginger ale. Our ages ranged from 55 to 5 and all of us enjoyed this outing. I would definitely go again,

A buddy tipped me off about this place, and I'm so glad I took his advice. Chris was the perfect guide--laid-back, professional, and dialed in to all the righteous dive spots. The shore entry was an adventure in itself, and we ended up exploring the same stunning reefs the pricey boat tours take you to. These were hands-down the best dives we've had in the islands.
