We went out twice with Kona Style and had fantastic experiences both times. The morning sail and snorkel was beautiful and relaxing -- we saw lovely views of the coast, lots of fish (including flying fish as we sailed to the bay), urchins, and even some dolphins. While we didn't partake in the breakfast fruit or mini muffins on board, the pre-departure coffee was welcome and yummy. On the return, we greatly appreciated and enjoyed our boxed lunches (the salad was particularly great!). We had the option for complimentary light drinks or to purchase cocktails but just drank our water. Then we did the really late night manta snorkel, which was intense but truly awesome -- the mantas came within inches of our faces repeatedly, and we were often surrounded by a school of decently sized fish. Because everyone in the group is lined up along the same lighted board, you're very close to your neighbors, but the sea life is so majestic that you barely notice anything above the water. Cocktails available for purchase on the way there, and complimentary hot cocoa on the way back. We had the same competent and professional, yet friendly, crew for both outings. They prioritized both safety and comfort. We had plenty of time in the water. Boat was clean and well-stocked (including the bathroom and when my daughter needed a band-aid). They played fun music. Masks fit us well and didn't fog up. Other provided gear included noodles to make floating easier, reef safe sunscreen for the day snorkel, and wetsuit tops for the night snorkel. We decided to do the Sunset Manta cruise. Unfortunately, we saw zero mantas that night possibly because of choppy waters. But despite not seeing any Mantas that night, our experience was awesome due to the fantastic crew lead by Captain Jaq. Kona Style was so nice to offer a redo at no charge on another day since we didn't get to see any Manta's. Since we were leaving the next day to go back home, they told us that they will give us a credit next time we come back and it does not expire! My partner and I did the manta ray sunset cruise and 100% recommend it! The first time someone suggested this experience I was thinking: "the ocean...at night? NO THANK YOUUU!". By about the 15th time someone told me how amazing it was I was like "ok, fine..." And let me tell you-it was absolutely BREATHTAKING. The crew was super friendly and put us at ease right away. They had a wealth of knowledge about these incredible creatures. One thing I would suggest for anyone who struggles with motion sickness- take precautions. We had good weather and the boat ride out went smoothly. The transition from water back into the boat was a little rocky with people moving around and getting situated-I was glad I had taken a preemptive Dramamine. When I booked online for the Sunset Manta Ray Snorkeling Tour, I was only able to reserve 16 spots, which led me to believe we had booked a private charter. However, when we arrived at the Kona Style shop for check-in, it quickly became clear that wasn't the case... The quaint shop was packed with other passengers signing waivers and preparing to board. Unfortunately, waivers can only be completed in person, which feels very inefficient, especially when you're hosting a large group. Sadly, the sunset sail was a bit of a bust, as you can't control Mother Nature, albeit, that wasn't going to rain on our parade. After the sailing portion, our deck crew began providing instructions on what to expect and how to prepare for the evening. Once in the water and situated with our flotation devices and snorkel gear, we began to duck our heads in the water to see the manta rays feast on plankton under a UV light. The opportunity to see manta rays and being so close was incredible. The manta rays are truly as massive as the locals say and it's humbling to be reminded of how small we are in the world. However, the experience itself was anxiety inducing. There were just way too many people in the water for the crew to manage effectively. Despite taking prescribed medication beforehand, I was on the brink of a panic attack because I was struggling to get my snorkel mask to fit properly, trying to hold onto my flotation devices while also not white knuckling the board to bring others down, and with the darkness of the water plus trying to follow instructions and stay in the water "to suck it up", it was SO OVERWHELMING. If you're prone to anxiety or not a proficient swimmer, I'd think twice about this excursion. If possible, I'd recommend chartering the boat privately to get the attention that's needed. With the amount of people that was on our boat and the current, our legs and noodles collided roughly against each other when in the water. Post snorkel, we returned back to shore, but not without several of us getting seasick first. read more

Me and my family took a snorkel cruise on the Kona style as a treat and it was the highlight of our time. what a lovely adventure the crew provided us with, shout out to Captain Tanner, crew members Trek, Bart, Doug and Keawe. They went above and beyond making sure we were all comfortable and knowledgeable of our surroundings and activities to keep us safe and having a blast. we were provided with snacks and lunch with a paid full bar. we will be back for sure! From start to finish, the crew was incredibly friendly and attentive. They made us feel like we were in good hands before the boat even left the dock. The ride out was its own little adventure. We had dolphins escorting us out of the harbor, which felt like something straight out of a nature documentary, and then flying fish skimming the surface as if they were showing off. Once we got into the water, it only got better. Being surrounded by black triggerfish was downright magical, almost like snorkeling inside a living, shifting constellation. Wow! I grew up on the big island, Kona specifically so I love coming home every year. Having a big group of brilliant women friends visit for a week we knew we had to do a cruise with hopefully glimpsing some whales as well. Not only was our crew of Captain Tanner, Doug and Keawe phenomenal from the minute we showed up and stepped on the boat until we stepped off almost three hours later at the Kona of pier!!!! It was an extraordinary combination of being out on the water with expert Watermen, seeing a ridiculous amount of whales doing what they do in a pristine respectful, natural environment, also combined with some beautiful big island and Hawaiian cultural history. This experience was incredible! I never imagined being in the water with giant manta rays brushing up against me as they fed on thousands of plankton. During our 30 - 45 stint in the water we witnessed numerous rays feeding. There were 33 guests on our tour which made things a bit crowded but the crew did a nice job of making sure everyone was safe and comfortable. Watching the sun disappear into the ocean and seeing a humpback whale breach the surface and dive were other memorable highlights. This was the best tour I have ever taken! I've been to Kealakekua Bay with Body Glove before and loved it, but Kona Style made the whole experience feel so much more special. When we pulled into Kealakekua Bay, one of the staff members shared a beautiful prayer to bless the area. After snorkeling at what is probably the best spot on the island, we got to sit at the very front of the boat and enjoy sandwiches. On the way back, they even showed us Hawaii's longest slide track for heʻe hōlua, which can still be seen today. Wow!  That's right, a very big WOW for the Konastyle boat and its crew!  If you're in Kona and looking for a fun adventure,  these are the people to go with and you will have a great experience!  We saw the boat in the harbor coming back from a trip and all the people getting off the boat were smiling and laughing,  so we thought we would give it a try and I'm so glad that we did! Everything about the experience was first rate, from the hospitality of the crew to the chance to go snorkeling and some incredible fish and to be swimming with them was something that I will never forget!  They also would stop along the way and point out a few histories of the Kona area which was also a very nice surprise.  The crew had snacks and coffee for the ride to the snorkeling area and then after getting to snorkel for an hour with the fish,  they had a nice little lunch for the ride back to the harbor.  Also a very nice surprise was adult beverages for purchase and after eating and snorkeling that made for a very fun ride as well! Great experience! the check-in was easy, the crew were very friendly and helpful, the 50 minutes of snorkeling were gorgeous, and the captain and crew wove in some amazing Hawaiian history lessons and whale watching throughout the morning. One caveat--the boat ride was about an hour each way. A bonus is that the boat is smaller than others in the area, so it feels more like an outing with friends instead of a mass-produced event. We had Captain Tanner and crew. They were beyond amazing and very attentive. The Captain had prepared us to know we may have to wait before we may see Manta Rays. By the time we got in the water they were all over the place. This was the most amazing thing we have ever done. You are given very specific and easy to follow directions. Listen to the crew that goes in the water with you they are there to inform you as well as ensure your safety and entertainment. We saw huge manta rays as well as the elusive male manta ray.
