There's not a lot of places to kayak on lake normal surprisingly but if you can get a reservation at aloha it is always a great experience. It's quick and easy. You walk about 20 yards from the parking lot to sign in and then another 30 yards to hop in your kayak and go. Absolutely beautiful spot on the water and you can cruise around as long as you want. Update: Went back two days later (today) to go tandem kayaking with my son. I kayaked a lot as a kid, but very few times since. Love it. A lot to explore here. Also saw/met professional paddle-boarder. He travels country and sees some amazing places. I asked him his opinion on Lake Norman from a scenic perspective. He raved about it. I guess we live in a nice place. ---- I went at 5 p.m. yesterday, which was a Saturday. They were booked until 4 p.m. This was my first time here, so I didn't know what to expect other than water and standing on a board while paddling. It was a little different than expected. From an exercise standpoint, I expected it to be an arm workout, but it was much more of a core workout with legs secondary. From a relaxation standpoint, it was more therapeutic than expected. I often think about driving to the mountains solo to clear my head, but this did the trick, and it's a lot closer. Instead of you going to your thoughts, they come to you. That said, I was the only one out there because it was late in the day. The service was excellent. The place is very well run. They also have the only Cycle Boat in NC. It's a two-hour ride where you paddle and drink beer and/or wine. You can rent the boat for a party or go solo for an open event. It stops halfway through for bathroom break. When I got to my car, I had to change from bathing suit to street clothes because I told a business owner I would take pictures for them for Yelp. First, my right pant leg got caught as another car approached and parked next to me (on the left). I waved as if everything was normal and I was just some really friendly guy. The guy waved back and walked away. I then noticed a sign on a post saying the parking lot was under video surveillance. Oh well. My Aloha has paddle-boards, kayaks, the aforementioned Cycle Boat, and probably some other stuff I don't know about. Highly recommended. read more

With such a beautiful weekend out was looking for some fresh air and get some action out on the lake. We came to Aloha on a whim to rent some Kayaks. So glad we were able to get some fresh air and much needed sun. The staff is great friendly and some of the nicest folks ever. Originally we were just going to rent a Kayak for only an hour but we were recommended to do 90 minutes, Glad we did the 90 minutes. It was just the perfect amount of time to be on the lake take our time to paddle out at a leisurely pace without feeling too rushed or being out too long. Looking forward to coming back It's so nice being out on the water. read more

Took my first ever Paddle Board class at Aloha Paddle Sports this past Sunday. It was a 10am class and we were so lucky to have Blanca as our instructor. She took us through all the basics on land and then got us in the water quickly. I was so surprised at how manageable paddle boarding was! The instructions were easy to follow and after a little bit of practice we were out on Lake Norman. For the class, we did about a 1.5 mile loop before heading back to the shop. It was the perfect 1.5 hour introduction. The shop sells all sorts of water sport gear and is super easy to get to from Exit 25 off of 77. We will be back for more rentals! read more

Established business with super friendly and knowledgeable staff, reasonable prices and a great location for rentals. What else could you ask for? If new to the sport of paddleboarding I'd recommend taking their intro class. As someone who has a little bit of experience I went with just a solo rental. They now have a 90 min option as 1 hour is a little short and 2 might be a little too long for some people. I went with that and after taking last season off, that was plenty of exercise for me. At $30, it was a great deal. I'll be back until I can afford to buy a board from these guys. read more

Such a positive experience planning a birthday paddle for a friend here. We had a large group and they were patient with our schedule changes and updates. They even had a life jacket for my dog. We had a latecomer and they made sure the straggler knew how to find our group out on the lake. The location is a tricky to find with just a small sign to indicate you walk around the building. Sometimes they are at the dock and not inside so check that out first. Very friendly and a fun paddling experience. read more

I visited My Aloha on a Friday morning with two friends. We had reserved two rental SUP's the day before and brought one with us. (They advise making reservations and we agree, as they got very busy toward early afternoon!) The girls who checked us in and got us set up were very helpful and kind. They made sure our life vests fit properly and our paddles were at the proper length. The guys brought our SUP's down to the dock and helped us launch safely. They pointed out areas we could go safely (no wake zone's). Helpful tips: If you don't paddle with water shoes, there is a place on the dock to store your shoes. also, if you don't have a waterproof case for your phone, etc., they sell them in the store. read more

Took a SUP yoga class here on July 4 weekend. Was surprised that my friend and I were the only two gals in the class, but were psyched to have a private session! I know a lot of places will cancel class when they don't meet a minimum, so I appreciated that they still took us out. In regards to logistics, everyone here was great. The boards / paddles / anchors were already down at the dock, and we were allowed to leave our things in the locked office during our session. The instructor put the boards in and out of the water for us so literally all we had to do was hop on / off. The instructor led a great flow and while this is no fault of Aloha's, the conditions were perfect and we really had a lovely morning on the water. My friend had also purchased a SUP here for her husband previously and couldn't say enough good things about the experience. I would highly recommend this spot for all things SUP, especially the yoga classes. read more

Booked a paddle boarding time for a team outing, & was very pleased with our day on the water! The staff here is all very sweet, open and helpful. Our check in was quick, and we were on the water in no time. This spot on the lake is perfect for this kind of thing, tucked in a quiet cove so that you can get your bearings, and then take off onto the larger section of lake. We stored our stuff in the boat on the dock, which I wasn't crazy about, but didn't have time to run stuff back to the car. I loved this experience, instruction was well explained and detailed. Check in and out was fast, and they're super encouraging - whether you can stand up right away, or it takes a few times. I plan on checking out their prices and packages so that I can make this a lunch time stop :) read more

The staff made our first visit to Lake Norman a five star experience. I really wanted to try out paddle boarding, but the winds were VERY strong that day, and I am thankful for their honesty and steering me away from becoming a human sail boat. They quickly switched our reservation out for 2 kayaks and shared with us what routes we could do in 2 hours. The lake was very scenic and offered us quite the workout. We came back a few minutes late (we hadn't accommodated quite well enough for the wind conditions, but they offered us a warm smile and didn't charge us any extra fees. We can't wait to make a return trip on a calmer day and try out paddle boarding with them. * The kayaks have an airtight container onboard -so don't be afraid to bring a phone to take some photos on your adventure. read more

What a fun way to get out on the water and not break the bank! The staff here are real pros and make for a great experience. We rented kayaks for an hour just to get a little exercise to get out in the water and we had a nice trip. The staff were great about letting us store some belongings there as well as providing plastic cell phone holders to protect out on the water. No one wants to drop their cell phone in the water while kayaking! But we obviously need to take our selfies! I think next time I would want to go longer because I felt like as soon as we got out it was already time to turn around. read more

Decided to try SUP this past weekend and I saw My Aloha in the Piedmont Pilot. Turned out to be a great decision all the way around! The staff and owner at My Aloha were incredibly friendly, and they made everything so easy. After 10 minutes of instruction and coaching I was up and super comfortable on the board. The shop is full of cool stuff and the prices are way better than I would have thought for a retail place right on the water. We've rented kayaks in several cities/states and Aloha was the best so far. Why? We rented two kayaks for two hours. They know a lot about paddling, they can give some useful pointers. The equipment - kayak, paddles and PFD's are in good shape. They gave us bottled water (we forgot ours) and dry bags (for keys, wallet, phone) - no other rental place we've been to did that. They helped us get in and out of our kayaks, even though we came back 10 minutes early I guess they were looking for us. They had four suggested routes on a map, helpful since we aren't familiar with Lake Norman. The $ rates are very competitive. And on top of all that, the young lady that sent us off and the owner who brought us in were both pleasant, friendly and helpful. They do everything I could think of to make it a great experience, we enjoyed ourselves! And they had a nice shop for paddling too, with SUPs and all the related gear. read more

I have used aloha twice before for instructional group sessions. This time I was very disappointed. I had company from out of town who had never been paddle boarding before and maybe 10 minutes into our session the guy says well you two look like pros already and he took off back to the shop just leaving us there out on the lake. I certainly didn't get what I paid for which was an instructional hour. Next time, because of this, I'll probably go elsewhere read more

Only con for me was: I am a senior citizen with knees that are not the best and had an embarrassing fes moments needing help getting out of the kayak and onto a dock. The instruction was brief but adequate, as the kids were eager to figure things out on their own anyway. First off, my aloha is located in a very nice spot on the lake. We had a very quick check in and immediately started a brief shore side introduction to paddle boarding before getting a chance to get our get wet. Out instructor Blanca was very patient and did an excellent job instructing is on the water. The entire group was almost immediately able to paddle board with success. Safety was very important and they only use the best equipment. I would highly recommend this business. read more

I would definitely recommend this place! We had a great time and everyone was so friendly. We rented two paddle boards for 2 hours and you couldn't beat the price! We also brought our dog who loved it! It's nice that they allow dogs, just make sure to bring a towel for your dog so they don't scratch up the board.
