She recommended custom orthotics and had me sign an agreement stating that if my insurance did not cover them, I would be responsible for the full cost, about $350. I agreed, assuming this was standard and appropriate coming from an in-network provider. Later, I learned that because Dr. Auger is contracted with my insurance, she should have only been allowed to charge me around $180 for the orthotics. Despite this, she did not honor that pricing. While I understand I signed the agreement, it felt unethical for an in-network provider not to follow insurance guidelines. When the "custom" orthotics arrived, I was charged an additional $80 simply to pick them up. The visit consisted of walking back to an exam room and placing them in my shoes briefly, no fitting, adjustment, or meaningful evaluation. After wearing the orthotics for several months, my foot pain actually worsened. When I contacted the office to schedule an adjustment, I was told I could make another appointment. Given my previous experiences, I called ahead to confirm whether there would be an additional charge. At that point, I was told Dr. Auger would refer me out to another provider. Between the high costs, lack of improvement, and being referred elsewhere for follow-up care, this experience was extremely disappointing. I ultimately spent nearly $600 and months in pain. Holy Moly I had a long wait to see Dr Smith. Apparently there was an emergency, and one of his…read morestaff called in sick. I wish they would have called me to tell me that he was running late, so that I didn't have to take so much time off work just to have Dr Smith look at my ankle. If I wasn't in so much pain I would have left, and came back a different day. My appointment was at 4:20pm and I didn't see Dr Smith until 5:40pm. Mind you they close at 5:00pm. The receptionist was vacuuming, and cleaning up to go home, before I was even seen. When Dr Smith did see me, he was ever so nice, and I didn't feel like he was rushing me out the door because it was past closing time. I insisted on taking xrays. I don't know if that was a waste of money, or not, since nothing showed up on the xrays. No breaks or sprains that he could see. He wanted me to wear a boot. (I just got rid of the brand new one that I have never worn, that cost me an arm and leg) I said I didn't want to by another one unless he knew for 100% that it would fix my foot pain. He couldn't guarantee it, so I opted just for an ankle brace, which helps, but still hasn't fixed my foot pain. I'm supposed to go back in two weeks, but I'm just going to see how this ankle brace works first, before I spend another couple hundred dollars for an office visit.

It took a lot for this busy mom to even get to the doctor in the first place and I left feeling so defeated and humiliated. There seemed to be a huge misunderstanding and I am not a confrontational person at all but he snapped at me and said I was interrupting him. I worked in the medical field for years and we would never have treated a patient or spoken to them in the way that he did to me. Dr. Smith is very busy and probably could care less if he loses me as a patient but hopefully I can prevent someone from making the same mistake that I did. Only on a follow up visit next (or another) day is it possible to get an adjustment. I'm guessing this strategy allows for a second office visit charge. They tried to fit me in but after a 10 minute wait in the waiting room, followed by 15 minutes in the patient room, I left. Sooooooooooooo definitely my fault for not sticking it out, but the lack of respect for my time and the lack of up front notice that I would NOT be able to get an adjustment at this appointment would have led to me making a decision to choose another provider for this service. I've never faced such foot dragging on getting an adjustment on the initial visit.
