Brought my car in a few months ago for my camshaft sensor b. The guy on the phone told me he could fix it no problem. I come back to the shop and the mechanic said he couldn't get the part but he cleaned it. He claims my 2012 Jeep Wrangler should be "fine" and proceeds to charge me $370. After he charged me an insane amount of money to clean my BROKEN part; my Jeep broke down again 10 miles down the road. He said if anything happened I could call him and he would tow me for absolutely free. This guy is cheap and willing to do anything for a dollar. I would not recommend this mechanic to anybody. read more

I hate to leave mixed reviews on any business, but I wasn't treated fairly by this shop today and it's worth considering if you're looking for a mechanic in Mammoth. I came to Alpine Garage because I hit a curb and my front bumper was pulled out and dangling around the wheel well. Mike met me around 7:30 am, and reassured me that he's seen much worse damage, and that he'd have it fixed up in a few hours. When I come to pick up the car, I see that the uppermost part of the bumper was pushed back into place, with some strips of duct tape on both sides. But there was a significant part of the wheel well bodywork still dangling underneath the car, which could easily have caught something on the road and torn off, potentially damaging the tire or causing an accident. I pointed this out to Mike. He said that he didn't see that part hanging down because he didn't have time to lift the car, and that was the "best he could do," and that I should take it to a body shop. So I asked him for some duct tape, and got down on my back and taped the bottom bodywork up in a few minutes. It'll hopefully be stable enough to get me to another shop. After that, Mike charged me $60. I presume that's for an hour of labor, which I'm guessing is the shop minimum. I don't feel that this was a fair transaction because: 1- Mike didn't look under the car, let alone lift it, to assess the extent of the damage and whether the car was safe to drive. 2- Mike said I'd need to take it to a body shop, but a non-mechanic (myself) was able to make the car a lot safer by taking three minutes with some duct tape. He said he'd done the best he could, but since he's a professional mechanic, I'm sure that's not true. Even I could've used some tip ties, self-tappers, or JB weld to put the wheel well back into place more securely. 3- I was charged $60 after being told to pick up the car in an unrepaired and potentially unsafe condition, after having to tape the car up myself to get it somewhat road-worthy. Maybe they were having a bad day, but I can't really think of a great explanation for this. If they were too busy, why not refuse the job? If they didn't have time to check the car, why tell me it was ready and safe to pick up and drive away? Many other folks have clearly had good experiences with this shop, but based on my own experience, I can't recommend it. read more

We had several malfunction indicator lamps lit up on our Audi A6 when we were up at our cabin in early September 2024. I called Mike at Alpine Garage and he said ease it on over from June Lake and he'd have a look. He discovered that a rodent had chewed through some wires in the engine compartment. Easily the worst mechanic I've ever been to. I brought my truck in to have an ignition coil replaced. The following morning Mike called me to tell me he had replaced the ignition coil, that he had test-driven the truck and it was running smoothly. He said he was leaving town that morning, so I had to pay the bill over the phone-$570 for the job at $175 an hour. When I picked up my truck, the engine was still misfiring so badly that it was undrivable-clearly it had not been test-driven or properly fixed. Not trusting Mike to do any more work on my truck, I had it towed to another mechanic, who told me that when they opened up the engine compartment they found a bolt missing and that the ignition coil Mike replaced had not been fully screwed in, which resulted in the engine continuing to misfire. When I told Mike about this, he apologized and offered to refund me what he had charged me for labor. However, when I tried to arrange a time to come and pick up the check, he would not answer my calls or return my messages. I had to go back to his shop in order to get him to talk to me, at which point he denied any wrongdoing and threatened to take me to court over the matter. After some conversation he finally agreed to refund me $200-less than half of what he charged me for the "labor" he did. If I didn't live locally and didn't have the ability to talk to him in person, I'm certain I would have never gotten even the half refund. There are plenty of competent mechanics in this area; unfortunately this is not one of them. read more

We were broke down had to be towed 100 miles and he somehow pulled the part out of a hat and had us back on the road in 24 hours on a Saturday he even insisted on a hug. I was visiting from OC and the "Add Oil" alert popped up despite it being just serviced the day before and passed with flying colors from the mechanic. ABOVE and BEYOND!!!!!! My husband I and traveled to the mtns for a backpacking trip when we experienced some brake issues. A waitress @ Tom's diner (we stayed the night here to acclimate) told my husband about Mike @ Alpine Garage. Unfortunately it was past closing so we had to wait till the next morning. We struggled with the fact we'd have to cut short our backpacking trip to get the truck fixed with knowing we had no other option. The Alpine garage wasn't open until 8am but my husband started calling around 7am when Mike answered and told us to bring our truck in right away. We drove the 16miles to Alpine Garage and met Mike (super super nice guy) We told how disappointing it was to cut short our backpacking trip but that we'd stay in Mammoth until the truck was fixed or we'd call an Uber to take us to the trailhead. Mike told us he would drive us to the trailhead (45mins) drop us off, fix the truck and have it dropped off and at the trailhead for us so it was there when we hiked back out......r u kidding me??? No I'm not! We not only got to go on our hike but when we returned to the truck Mike had left us a loaf of Schatts bread with the words "Welcome Back" and our truck fixed (front brake issue) I don't want people to think that Mike provides his service as an Uber I just think we were very lucky that he was able to help us out on that particular day! I don't typically Yelp but our experience with Alpine Garage was outstanding in their service and our truck is once again safe! When I called the shop to get more info from my mechanic he was very rude and hung up on me after cursing at me. This guys doesn't even have our records due to not having a computer. After searching all over town to find an available mechanic, I was referred to Mike at Alpine who was able to take a look at my BMW SUV on a Monday morning when I needed to get my kids home that evening. He easily found the problem and even though he couldn't possibly replace the damaged coolant hose (would have taken days to get the part), he rigged up a temp bypass that allowed me to drive home that same day. The repair certainly wasn't elegant or permanent, but it did get me home that same day. His fee wasn't cheap but I sort of expected that since I needed it done that day and he had many cars there that also needed work. So kudos to Mike for making a quick repair and on a side note, he's a huge 49er fan so maybe that put him in a good mood that day since they just beat the Cowboys the night before! read more

The oil filter housing cracked on my Jeep Rubicon, causing a major oil leak, and stranding me in Mammoth Lakes. Mike (owner) at Alpine Garage was recommended by a local. It was the right call. Mike took the jeep diagnosed it and explained the issue. This is a big job, not a same day fix. Regardless , Mike was able to get thr parts and fix the issue. I picked up the jeep following week. He was so helpful, the engine light on my car was flashing, I first took my car to a bigger garage, they told me I would have to have my car towed back to Los Angeles, that would have cost me a fortune as well as a super inconvinience. We have been coming up to Mammoth for 35 years but have never had to have our car repaired. Mike, who owns, Alpine Garage knew immediately what the problem was and said it would be ready by noon. It actually was finished by 11:00. We had visions of the part not being in stock or having to wait a few days, but Mike took care of us right away. Besides being a great mechanic, he was one of the nicest guys my husband and I have ever met. He was very reasonably priced and even took off our snow chains for us. BEWARE: I was swayed by Alpine's many 5 star reviews, but after my own experience I question the legitimacy of those reviews and I'd highly consider another mechanic at all costs. Not sure if Mike was having a bad day but he had a very inappropriate, unprofessional, and VERY aggressive behavior that almost turned violent between Mike and me, the customer. My engine began misfiring on the way up to Mammoth, I took it into Mike who needed a day to get the part and fix it. I paid him nearly $400 for the parts/services. When I picked up my car it had the same exact problem and the check engine light came on immediately. I took the car back to him and he told me to take it to a mechanic when I got home to LA or I can wait another 2 days for more parts and services to be done for an additional cost. I told him I didnt think it was fair to pay $400 for an unfixed car and that for it to be fixed id have to wait another 2 days and pay him more. So I told him I'd pay for the "part" that he replaced but I'd like a partial refund on the labor for my car not being fixed. Mike then got aggressive with his words and put his finger in my face and told me he'd put my old part in see how it drove then. My girlfriend who was in the car said "Lets Go" as she could tell Mike was getting hostile, in which he put his head near the car and said "Whatd you say?!" to my girlfriend. He then walked away and said "You're a fucking dick." He went into his garage still yelling slanders towards me and told me "Get in here, I'll show you you're fucking old part" while raising my old car part over his head. Fearing that things were about to turn violent with his very aggressive behavior and him terrifying my girlfriend I decided itd be best to leave as it was clear I would not be getting my refund from him in this state. I took my car to a mechanic back home who then told me that part that Mike replaced was still misfiring and broken. So all in all, Mike did a half ass job for a premium price leaving me out of $400 for nothing to be fixed. And the mechanic back home replaced all of my engine coils, not just one, he replaced all of my spark plugs, and did the right job for $300. I know you're limited to auto repair shops in a place like Mammoth but dont let that make you make the same mistake I did by going to Mike. I wish I had gone to another shop or possibly one in Bishop to save myself this experience. read more

Mike was truly amazing!!! Our BMW broke down on the way up to Mammoth. He couldn't get the part to fix it over the weekend, but made a temporary fix to the turbo pump line that worked perfectly. He charged us a VERY reasonable price too. We got home and drove it for a couple of weeks without any problems! The alternator on our car died while we were on vacation in Mammoth. We looked at reviews and were concerned about using Alpine Garage, but Mike was the only one who picked up the phone. We were not in West LA anymore, so we knew we were at a disadvantage. Mike said he was sending his wife to pick up the (NEW ALTERNATOR)- he charged us for from O'Reilly Auto Parts. He drove to my husband's location and had my husband follow him to Alpine Garage. He was kind and drove him back to the condo we were staying at and had the car fixed by late morning the next day. My husband asked how much it was going to be and he never got an answer. We did get the car the next day as promised along with a hand written invoice with NO receipt of a NEW ALTERNATOR from O'Reilly's attached. Needless to say the invoice was OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE!!! When my husband asked for the receipt from O'Reilly's Mike got upset just like he did with the other individuals on Yelp. He got very uncomfortable and said he would have to find it?! What kind of business owner does not keep receipts?! Since we knew where he sent his wife to buy the alternator we stopped by O'Reilly's Auto Parts. If you use Mike please note he has an account there and gets discounts!!! He did not buy us a NEW Alternator but a REFURBISHED ONE with a Lifetime Guarantee. Which we would have never know about if we did not stop by O'Reilly's to find out! Mike over charged us, lied to us and did not tell us about our lifetime guarantee!!! Mike is a great guy but I would not go back to him as a mechanic. I needed breaks replaced and when he did so he forgot to tighten the lug nuts on my car and my wheel almost came off. My Ford Transit 350 van has been my home on the road for 2 years now. While traveling driving up Tioga pass on east side of Yosemite, I started losing engine power and it was running very rough. Mike is amazing! We started experiencing car issues on the drive up to Mammoth from So Cal. We have a 2014 BMW X3 and it was giving a notice "drive train malfunction" we barely had enough power to get to Mammoth and had to drive no more than 45 mph. When we arrived in town we searched for a mechanic (as the nearest BMW dealership is hours away in Reno) and found Mike. Not only did Mike fix our car-he did it fast without 4 hours! When the Snowpocalypse 2017 trapped everyone in town a few weeks ago, I randomly called the first place I found on Yelp. Mike answered and said he could swing by in an hour to help us tow our F-150 ( 4WD WITH chains on!) out of our buried high-centered spot in the driveway. His elderly mother even shut me up when I called back ( and I told her we had been shoveling for 5 hours) :"honey, I'm 82 and i've been shoveling for a week".
