Clean rooms and very fair prices! Place looks dated but I don't really care as long as it's clean. Stopped here on a Saturday night on the way to Tennessee and managed to get the last 2 rooms they had. Check in was easy enough and the lady at the front desk was very helpful. Unfortunately we arrived after dark and left before sunrise but it apparently has a pasture around it and chairs set up outside for you to watch the animals and deer. read more

This is one of the cleanest places we have stayed. The rooms have new laminate floors, so none of that icky motel carpeting that harbors dirt and who knows what else. The furniture in the rooms is all new and clean, and while the vanity cabinet looked original there was a new solid surface countertop. Decent water pressure in the shower, and a gorgeous view outside. Here are some things that I think would boost the rating: get new towels (the ones we had were very thin and coarse), invest in better mattresses (ours was extremely hard), put some furniture like a settee and a small table with two chairs in each room. There was one office style chair and a desk only. It would've been nice to have a robe hook on the inside of the bathroom door and maybe even a towel bar in there. Housekeeping never came to our room-we had to call and ask for clean towels on the second day. Finally, across the parking lot there is a grassy area with a view of the mountains. A few Adirondack chairs and maybe even a fire pit would add a really nice touch. For what we paid it was fine all considered, and we can't complain about noise or any other problems. Would stay there again, but I'm bringing towels from home next time. read more

I've been traveling quite a bit this year, and traveled for work for about 9 months in 2018-2019, so I've stayed in quite a few hotels over the past three years. Usually chain ones. The Alpine Motel is the standout of the ones I've stayed in this year, despite also being one of the less expensive ones. The rooms are newly renovated and clean (see the pictures). The beds are comfortable, and not too soft. Everything works. I appreciated the lack of carpeting, as someone who had come to Abingdon to ride the Virginia Creeper Trail. And the curtains work great for keeping the sun out if you want to sleep in a bit. The outside is also really nice. Both nights I was there, deer were frolicking on the hills by the motel. A cow pasture borders the motel as well. The Alpine name is appropriate, and it's more scenic than most places I've stayed. They even have folding chairs if you want to sit out front and enjoy the view; I spent some time talking with a man who was doing just that before walking to dinner one night. Most places in Abingdon aren't walking distance, but there are a few between the motel and the interstate that you can safely walk to. At the time I was staying, breakfast was suspended (except coffee) to due delta, so you may wish to ask about that. But even without breakfast, it was the best deal in town, and I'd stay again if I were to find myself in the area. read more

Very clean. Room 101 had an unfortunate, startling noise that woke me several times, I believe coming from the fridge. A table and chairs for eating would have been most appreciated. The rooms are large enough. Also, no heat proof cups to heat water for coffee or tea in microwave. read more

Recommended. A clean room with a comfortable bed for a good price. Nice looking in like-new condition. We phoned in the reservation as there was no online option. Michael took the call and was polite and helpful. When we realized we wouldn't get in until midnight, we called again to advise them of the late arrival and Danny let us know that was OK. When we arrived he had preset the thermostat to ensure the room temp was comfortable. Our room has a comfortable firm king-size bed. The bedside tables each have a lamp with a power outlet and a USB-A port which is nice. The floor was laminate, not carpet, yet did not feel cold to my bare feet (at home it's either carpet or tile, and tile is cold at midnight, so I was happy.) The rooms have a big picture window of the valley with the mountains in the distance. read more

One of the best motels off I-81. $55/night for a clean, spacious, comfy room perched in the mountains, with 2 doubles, a fridge, microwave, TV with cable, and free WiFi. Awesome view in the morning, all rooms facing east to the rising sun. Greeted with mountain tops, not some cookie cutter hotel hallway and lobby trees and grass, and neighboring cows on the hill -- not some cookie cutter hotel hallway + lobby. I always wanted to spend a night in the Alpine, but having grown up a mere twelve miles from here, there was no need to. But my partner and I just returned from a trip that included two nights at what I believe is now Abingdon's oldest motel, and we were quite charmed. The Alpine consists of about twenty rooms fanning out from a central office. The Swiss couple who built the place in the early Sixties named it for the landscape they had left, and indeed its hilltop perch near old U.S. 11 leading into the town of Abingdon makes it a very pretty site with views of Virginia's tallest mountains. The motel grounds are nicely landscaped, great for picnics or just watching the sun rise and set, and a haven for birds. Hard to believe that down the hill from the Alpine are the full complement of chain motels, eateries, gas stations, and Interstate 81 (north to Roanoke, south toward Knoxville, TN). We were aware that a superhighway exists down there, but the noise was not obtrusive. As others have said, the rooms are large and solid -- gave me a shock to see how standard motel rooms have shrunk since about 1980. Very clean rooms, solid, comfortable, modern. I have about two-and-a-half complaints about the Alpine that kept me from giving it five stars: (1) the phone in my room didn't work (this may not matter much to folks who use their cell for everything). (2) The lone soft-drink machine was broken . . . plenty of ice, but no sodas at all. I ran across a motel a few years ago with the same problem, and the office simply sold us soft drinks. (3) The "Continental" breakfast was meager, mostly coffee and mini-muffins. Even so, and at this price, the Alpine is still a "find"! For those who enjoy a full breakfast, a Cracker Barrel and a Huddle House are right on the way to I-81. It would be wrong of me not to add that Abingdon is home to the venerable Barter Theater, a legitimate performance venue that is the 'State Theater of Virginia.' read more

Stayed here first time about two years ago. It was fine, sort of a flashback to old motor inns. Went back this past weekend ... and wow ! They have redone the rooms to a clean modernist sheen. Still feel a 60s vibe but rooms are so comfy. WiFi, fridge and TV all new and nice. And the same family has run this place for 20 years! So nice! Come for the bargain and clean svelte rooms, and support the owners! Can probably skip the "continental breakfast" but congratulate yourself on making the best choice in Abingdon. Tip: one side gets nice views of hills but may hear highway, other side probably a bit quieter but you miss the views. read more

This is a throw back to a forgotten age in the hotel industry. A no-frills roadside inn, the rooms are huge compared to a "modern" hotel and the carpet, sheets, bathroom, etc. are just as clean as a more modern place you'd find right at the interstate. You can actually crank open the windows and let the breeze blow through your place. You can't beat the Alpine's price anywhere nearby, the rooms are quiet, it's small and out of the way. Now all they need to do is shut down the nearby stretch of interstate so this place can exist in perfect tranquility. Just some passer-bys and the cows enjoying the cool Virginia air. read more

BIG Room. Nice amenities. Comfortable beds. Comfortable pillows (something I never thought I'd have to say until I stayed at a place that didn't have comfortable pillows.) Good WiFi. Microwave and mini-fridge. TV service is DirecTV. The channel selection is good, but service could be interrupted by heavy weather. Not enough electrical outlets. I had to unplug the table lamp to free up an outlet for my computer. Easy to get to. Excellent view. Each room has folding lawn chairs outside so guests can admire the view. There are no eateries close by, and walking along Main St. probably isn't a good idea anyway, as there are no sidewalks. There are some supermarkets nearby, at least one of which has a nice salad bar that I was able to choose my dinner from. read more

This place rocks for $55. Basic but Clean and new bathroom in smoking room #109. Great views of the mountains. New small refrig and microwave. Perfect right off of I-81. Good for singles, couples with 2 kids as room had two full beds. Non-Smoking rooms also available but I was happy with smoking room. read more

This was a nice little motel we stayed at near the end of our road trip. Everything was very clean, include the landscaping outside, it looked like a movie set. It's a quiet location, just a little way off the freeway. The room was very big too; so much room for activities! The staff was friendly and the price was good... around $60. read more

This is a good old time Mom & Pop motel from the 60's, one level with an outstanding view of the mountains. The rooms are large with a refrig/microwave and some recent upgrades. Facility is very clean and the owners are friendly and seem to appreciate the guests. Comfortable bed and fresh clean linens......coffee in the office but needs some help, pretty weak. Alpine was a very clean, quaint motel among the franchise no character motels. Very large rooms, comfortable bed, but the AC was not easy to regulate the thermostat. There was a very fine line between ice cold and heat...anything less than 5 produced heat. All in all, we would stay here again. read more

I travel quite a bit and thought that I would try the Alpine Motel. Reviews were above average and the photos looked good as well. The temperature this particular day was about 45 degrees F, cloudy and a good breeze. I went in to register and things seemed to be fine. The price was more than I observed on the internet, but that was ok too. When I got to the room, I was very disappointed. The room was cold and damp, outlet face plates were missing, the heat was in the ceiling, according to the front desk, much like baseboard heat. I guess that they do not understand Ambient temperature issues. I put my computer back in my car and went to the front desk for refund and left. Too cold, I explained and the clerk tried to talk me into staying, stating that the ceiling heat takes a few minutes. Well, not for me. The photos of the outlets, commode, tub etc. were right on point. Never go there again !!! read more

When we went in to pay the man was extremely rude to my boyfriend and said "what makes younthink you can stay so long without paying!?!" I was very pleased with my one night stay in room 115. It helps to scale your expectations to the venue. This isn't a Hilton. There aren't hair dryers, shampoos, and such, but there is a lot of room, excellent HD TV with tons of channels, decent bed (though worn blankets), good shower, nice views, and a price around half what the big chains are charging. However, the TV is from the early 90's the pillows are flat smoking holes in the sheets and the WiFi doesn't work even tho I asked before check in if it did they still put me far enough away that I only had two bars. Never again will we stay here. We had stayed here previously and I had given the place a 5. This time we had room 105. The check in guy said we had to turn the heat on because it hadn't been turned on and that it would take a while to warm the room up. It was 32 degrees out. We had a hard time figuring out the heating system and finally had to bring the guy to the room to do it. It was freezing. Luckily we had planned to leave to eat because you couldn't stay in the room. When we came back the room was WARM and heater was on high. There was no heat in the bathroom. The room was dirty. There was pee on the one side of the toilet. There was three bugs in the corners of the room. There was a section of the wallpaper half taped on. We left for a play and when we came back the room was warm enough to sleep in but getting a shower was awful. We left as soon as we got up in the morning. Never going back. read more

My husband and I went to explore Abingdon, VA two years ago and booked a whole week at the Alpine Motel while we were there. We were very pleasantly surprised at how spacious our room was, and very clean. Friendly service at the front desk and friendly cleaning service. We always enjoyed coming back to the motel after a day out and just relaxing. It sits on an overlook and you can sit outside and soak in the mountain view and highway noises. We enjoyed walking around the nicely-kept grounds. There is a farm right next door and we got to say hi to some friendly cows. This place was nice and private, and very accessible to downtown Abingdon. We are going back to Abingdon in a few weeks for our anniversary and are going to stay here again! read more

The price was right but the room was not. The front desk was very slow to take my information, but tried to satisfy my needs. When I went in the room I saw a stink bug, then another, then another, and another, at least a dozen so I decided I didn't really want them crawling on me in the night. The hotel is very dated and needs an upgrade. When I went to the office & told them I did not want to stay because of the bugs they told me they are everywhere & they just fly in when the door opens, but they still gave me the refund I wanted. read more

just what we needed for an affordable, non-chain, non-sleezy roadside motel, en route from lexington, KY to durham, NC. i don't understand how they can keep the cost so low. it's clean, convenient, no-nonsense. we stopped at moon dog pizza for take-out, and then came to alpine to eat pizza and watch the NBA semi-finals. i called from the road to see if they had a room. the proprietor just asked my name and said they would have a room for us. (my travel partner suggested i wait until tomorrow morning before posting my review; but i'm confident that nothing will happen between now and morning departure to make me veer from 4 stars -- unless they bring us espresso and avocado toast in bed, in which case i would go up to 5 stars.) AC unit is a little loud. this is a fine place. don't be misled by the low cost. oh, and very pretty floral landscaping at the drive-through office. read more
