Historic old and grand hotel with an impressive front porch and architecture. Once upon a time, this was a college for young ladies. We had read mixed reviews of the hotel and had chosen not to stay here, but we came to tour it. We were allowed to wander the public areas, but the front desk refused to allow us to look into any vacant rooms, not even one. Which is unusual considering the reviews and their pricing and do I want to stay for 3 nights at $350 ish per night when I'm concerned about the mixed reviews without being able to see what I'm renting. Nevertheless, walking the halls, the rooms being service had their doors open and we could glance in as we passed by. The inn is grand, for sure. The library and fireplaces are very welcoming in atmosphere, decor and interesting artifacts and such. However, it is unlikely that we would choose to stay here for more than one night, the rooms were not "wowing", especially as compared to the grandeur of some of the public rooms. So we will give it a try, but for this trip, our VRBO is more than satisfactory. read more

Dear Tanya, Our Alive After 65 group of 10-12 guests enjoyed a wonderful visit to The Martha in July 2025, including A Few Good Men, dinner at Sister's, and breakfast the following morning. The package rate of $325 per room included lodging, breakfast, theater tickets, and a $25 dinner credit at Sister's. Following our January planning meeting, the group voted to make this an annual event. I called to reserve our return visit for June 24, 2026, and was advised that everything had been taken care of. Based on that conversation, I informed the group that we were confirmed at the same package rate as 2025. Unfortunately, upon arrival on June 24, our group was charged $457 per room rather than the expected $325. In addition, when dining at Sister's, none of the guests received the advertised $25 dinner credit. This created significant frustration for the group, particularly since many had budgeted based on the original package pricing. Compounding the issue, most of the group experienced lengthy service delays and received meals that arrived cold. Since our stay, I have made numerous attempts to reach you by phone and have left messages through your front desk staff, but I have not yet received a response. Given the discrepancy in pricing and the missing dinner credits, I am requesting that we discuss an appropriate refund or accommodation for our group. We chose to dine at Sister's based on the understanding that the dinner credit was included, and the unexpected increase in cost was not communicated in advance. We had been looking forward to visiting Abington and staying at the Martha Washington Inn for a number of years. We were very disappointed. After paying for what we thought would be luxury, we found the Inn and staff to be very unkept. The windows were so dirty with cobwebs we were unable to see the courtyard. I would be surprised if anyone had maintained the landscape or cleaned the hot tub in the last 6 months. When having a less than desirable breakfast, our servers clothes looked as if he had worked on his car before coming to work. They had only one selection for the advertised "Great Breakfast ". That didn't work well either since they were out of eggs one morning. I would never stay at this Inn again. read more

The hotel room was mediocre, at best. The room was basically a poorly gentrified Motel 6. I was expecting something more colonial or historically accurate considering their history. EXTREMELY overpriced for what you get. -The Painted over peeling wallpaper says a lot. I wonder what's under it? -The comforter smelled like a gym locker room. So, definitely take it off before you bed down or bring your own. The Spa was nice and the restaurant was descent. And, please don't fall for that "haunted" Room 403 with the "phantom bloodstain". This review is mainly focused on the staff members whom made our work meeting/retreat a seamless and enjoyable weekend, all of whom were incredible! During the planning process for our event, there were some employment transitions that initially made me concerned for the numerous requests our staff had made, however Tanya, Willie, Lisa and team all went above and beyond to ensure that our experience was great. We rented the ballroom for a meeting and numerous rooms, and everyone on our staff had nothing much good things to say about their weekend at the Martha. Breakfast was amazing both mornings I was able to enjoy it, and the complimentary evening port was a nice touch. I hope to come back and enjoy a stay without the work duty responsibilities- as I didn't get to partake in the spa, pool/jacuzzi or grounds. But next time! read more

The Martha Washington Inn and Spa is a wonderful destination in the foothills of the mountains in Abingdon, VA. Built in 1832, for General Robert Preston and his wife Sarah, the house later became Martha Washington College in 1858; a college for young women. The War between the States took a great toll on the college as it was taken over and used as a hospital for both southern and northern troops. The college survived the war, but the great depression was an event from which it could not recover. In 1935, The Martha Washington opened as a hotel. It went through several ownership changes and in 1984, a group of businessmen bought the property realizing what an impact the historic structure had on the city of Abingdon. Today, The Martha is a fabulous enterprise featuring a hotel, restaurant, and spa. Guests enjoy the nearby Barter Theatre, many shops, restaurants, and galleries, and of course the beauty of nature that surrounds the town; including the Virginia Creeper Trail. We were cordially greeted when we arrived and our check-in was smooth and hassle free. We immediately went to our room and settled in before touring the hotel and grounds. There is an enclosed pool, a full service spa, an outdoor jacuzzi waterfall, fire pit, tennis and pickle ball courts, and an 18 hole miniature golf course. The price was very reasonable for the amenities that were included and for being right across the street from the Barter Theatre that was the reason for our trip. Horrible customer service and lack of communication. I accidentally left my corporate card in my room and was promised it would be mailed out the next day and the tracking number be emailed to me. I even left my personal credit card information to pay for the shipping. Since my job depends on being able to access this corporate account, it was important that this was time-sensitive matter. I left an email, left a voicemail, and called the property 5 different times. I was given the run-around, no one had answers for me, and no one apologized. I had to call back the 6th time to talk to the Bellman Manager. He finally went to UPS and they had never sent the package. This was 7 days later. I work in sales and hospitality and this was such a disappointment and a detriment to my job. I ended up paying the shipping fee myself since no one at the property offered to cover the cost for the hassles of the situation. My wife and I recently stayed here for our anniversary and the previous guest had left an open box of condoms in the drawer beside the bed. The room was obviously not properly cleaned or inspected prior our stay. when I notified a young lady working the desk. she just said sorry and that she would report it. Well, since I just reported it, that task had been accomplished. I advised her. I didn't feel that was satisfactory. She truly acted like it was no big deal. I would expect this type of occurrence at a motel 8, but not at the Martha Washington Inn. Needless to say, we were disappointed. We had really looked forward to staying here. This place is wonderful - loved it. This Inn could be a destination in itself. The hotel is historic and gorgeous; it's retained its original style but with modern amenities. The grounds are beautiful, as is the surrounding area - full of history and charm. Plan better than we did. Make an appointment at the spa - I regret that we didn't. Pack swimsuits and use the indoor saltwater pool and the outdoor hot tub. We didn't pack for this, and I regret it. We would have been the only ones there :-( There are also tennis courts, mini golf and a gym. We had a deluxe king room, which was super spacious, and the bed was comfortable. The only downside was that the hotel is close to a railroad track, so we did hear the trains. Not exactly My-Cousin-Vinny style, but if you're a light sleeper, you'll wake up. read more

Paid for the Presidential Suite. One of the faucets didn't work. Spa was not a great experience and felt like I didn't get moneys worth. Spa desk fine. Masseuse and aesthetician on the sullen side. Ok people read the reviews and understand either you accept this great lady as she is or you do not. Many other reviewers have mentioned the Martha's many charms. It is wonderful to sit on the huge porch and to explore the halls and the grounds. The rooms are all different and there is so much to look at and learn about her past. Go stay in a Hampton Inn if you have to make coffee in your room and have a USB port to plug your kid's ipad into. For the rest of us, we can walk up creaky stairs in sweltering heat and find that the ice machine doesn't work and still be glad we came. Yeah it's expensive. And yeah the ice machine should work and our room AC was wonky. The sheets were worn etc. I still loved it's character and would gladly come again. Give it a try. read more

I love this hotel. It has so much history to it. The rooms are lovely. There are pictures on the walls of the young women who lived there when it was a women's college. During the Civil war it became a hospital that tended to both Confederate and Union wounded soldiers. The pool is massive. It's gorgeous and should be in a movie. There is a Gazebo and garden outside that makes one feel as if you're back in time. The service is wonderful. The ladies at the receptionist desk are friendly and helpful. There is a restaurant on the premises which is very nice. They have a dress shop, spa and state of the art work out room. Highly recommended! You might bump into a famous actor because there's a well known theatre in Abington, VA where many actors go to work on their craft in plays. read more

Beautiful historic hotel packed with exquisite antique furniture and interesting artwork. My wife and I were visiting family in a couple nearby towns and my father-in-law surprised us by putting us up here in the President's Wing. We stayed in a Junior Suite Kind Bed room, which was large with a comfortable bed, a sitting area, and beautiful antique furnishings. The bathroom area was a bit tight, but that's what happens sometimes when modern amenities are shoehorned into historic buildings. The shower was a dual-head tile step-in shower with a warming light and upscale toiletries. Aside from the amazing room, the building and grounds are incredible. The restoration job on this property is impressive and the furnishings are top-notch. My wife and I spent time every day we were here just walking around. It's like staying in a museum. The Sisters Restaurant deserves special mention. We had drinks, late night apps and drinks, and a breakfast at the restaurant and all were excellent experiences. The wine list was nicely balanced and well curated. We were told that the restaurant usually is not open in January, but that they were trying it this year with a simplified menu. We were happy this was the case and enjoyed every second of it. The indoor salt water pool and heated outdoor salt water hot tub are things we wanted to try, but didn't have bathing suits with us or in any local stores, so we had to pass. My wife used their state-of-the-art gym one morning and loved it. The treadmills, ellipticals, bikes (including a Peloton that you can use even if you don't subscribe), free weights, and machines are all high-end, even by club standards (Lots of Life Fitness and True). We did not get a chance to partake of the spa facilities. Perhaps next time. If you're in the area and need a nice place to stay, I highly recommend the Martha Washington Inn and Spa. read more

Beautiful decadent hotel. Peaceful, calm, clean and full of details. The service was amazing, courteous staff await your call and need. When the bar is closed the front desk will have wine to serve (and affordable too). Amenities are great. Salt water pool is 24 hours, with a lovely outdoor hot tub. Mini golf and tennis are fun additions. The gym is fully equipped with state of the art equipment, I only used it one day but it was nice to have a complete gym. The Spa is nice, although i personally think it should be open and available more hours of the day (if you suddenly feel like a treat after tennis). Make sure you book the restaurant early as it gets filled up quick, or you can hit the bar area. The whole restaurant/ bar is a beautiful lounge style place with very comfortable seats. Service was good as well. Decent cocktails. Limited but delicious food. Appetizers are not as good. Dessert was amazing, the bread pudding was perfect. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. Very nice luscious beds. But the TV's are old and SD, so don't come for TV viewing, you'll be disappointed. The beds are comfortable, but I think they need new pillows, they were small and a little uncomfortable. Shower has strong water pressure with great smelling and smooth feeling soaps. Although I thought the bathroom was a little small. Hotel in general is very clean, doesn't have that musty smell from old houses. The attention to detail in the decor is superb. They have an elevator but I suggest taking the various stair cases as these are not your typical Hilton stair case. I was here for an out-of-town wedding from 3/28-3/30. 1) At The Sisters bar, Suzanne & Jen are THE BEST bartenders. On 3/28 Suzanne catered to my huge family with an upbeat attitude. I even asked for tea that night expecting a mug with some hot water and a teabag...instead I got a whole pot and a mug. Suzanne didn't seem to mind and brushed off my apologies for any inconvenience. Jen was my bartender on 3/29 and she was an absolute sweetheart. She was talking to my sister and I like we were old friends--but she didn't neglect any guests, she did her work efficiently! She also made me the greatest White Russian ever with Reese's infused vodka! I highly recommend you try that. 2) The food at the wedding was rather bland. I had a chicken dish that was not very warm and left much to be desired. The greenbeans as the veggie had more bacon on them than there were beans. I'd say the salad was the best part. 3) The free continental breakfast is kind of a joke. Considering the rate for our room was about $200/night, I was expecting a few options (I mean, at lesser chain hotels I've been offered bagels, muffins, even waffles, or other simple foods). Here it was a small container of one flavor of yogurt (which I am allergic to), mini muffins, or other petite pastries...the spread of options was on one dinner plate it seemed. Luckily you can also order breakfast. The french toast I had was delicious. 4) Overall I thought that the price of everything was pretty steep. At the wedding reception beer & wine were hosted, however a small glass (with a lot of ice) with well liquor was $7 and name liquor was $10. Maybe I'm just picky, but when I was thinking about the price they were going to end up getting per bottle for things the mark up kind of blew my mind. 5) The hotel itself is beautiful. NOT a luxury hotel (room price/night $300) just an experience of staying in an historical Inn. The rooms were not freshened, had to retrieve fresh towels from the reception desk. Coffee not available in room, but had to go to lobby and make it. Had to get additional water bottles from reception desk. Two bottles of water in room without glass/paper cups from which to drink. Complimentary port wine served at reception desk in plastic cup similar to hospital pill cup (wine was good). Sisters Restaurant food was adequate, but napkins had holes in them. Restaurant staff were excellent, but had to verbally tell us that although the breakfast was complementary, their gratuity was not (really tacky-reminder should have been on a table tent). This was our 60th anniversary trip and was very disappointed with the hotel. Everything else in Abington was great! read more

We loved our two-night visit. We so appreciate efforts to maintain the "old school" feel, without being fake, while accommodating modern conveniences like bathrooms and workout facilities-- so nice to find a hotel that invests in beautifully-tiled shower stalls! Exceptional landscaping with well-kept gardens and waterfalls. Tennis and pickle ball, saltwater pool, jacuzzi, and spa-- all right on site, and the rightly famous Virginia Creeper Trail is about three minutes away. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary and her birthday in Abingdon, electing to stay at "The Martha." I had made pre-arrangements with the staff to have chocolate strawberries in the room when we got there. This did not happen. When I went to talk to the staff about the issue, I was told that, "well, at least you won't be charged for them." Obviously, the charge wasn't the point. Before making reservations, I had called a month and a half in advance to take advantage of their Barter Theater package. When I called, I was told that they did not have the January schedule yet and to call back on January 2nd. I confirmed that there wouldn't be any issues with waiting another two weeks to book and was told it would be fine. When I called back, I was told they do not do packages for the months of January and February and I would have to buy the tickets on my own. Now, since it is two weeks later, the best seats are long gone, I was lucky to get any. I also asked about the dinner for our stay and was told that I could make reservations for dinner once we arrived. Come to find out, the restaurant wasn't even open. I did inquire about their "VIP Tickets" listed with the package - all it is is Barter Theater's "Best Available" seats - nothing else. There was also no refrigerator in our room, which would have been very nice to know prior to our arrival; however, the staff was helpful in allowing us to use their refrigerator to keep the cake for our celebration. My husband and I came for a couple of days to relax and see a play and wanted to try this historic inn. It is a very beautiful building and facility. The lobby was decorated spiritedly for Halloween-- very cute! No one offered to help us to our room, which we had difficulty finding. In fact, we had difficulty finding anything here. There are few directional signs, and it is quite a twisty turny place. One of the employees mentioned that the owner did not like signs. We had a king deluxe room overlooking the roof of another building and a parking area. There were not enough outlets -- we had to unplug unneeded things to plug in our electronics. The lightning was insufficient for reading, and the chairs were very uncomfortable. I tried reading in the lovely library downstairs, but it was much too warm in the room. I scheduled a 45 minute pedicure in the spa. I only received an express pedicure. When I said something to the receptionist, she said she would just change my bill. The express pedicure was not worth the money. She just trimmed my nails and slapped some polish on and told me to go down to the pool to let them dry (humidity in the pool area was about 100 percent). Breakfast is included in your price. They have a very limited menu. They basically have eggs and bacon, and I wanted something simple like a bagel and fruit. The scrambled eggs were over cooked and tasteless. I would rather pay and get something I want. This Inn is very expensive, and in my opinion not worth the price. read more

My family and I stayed here over Thanksgiving. It was a wonderful experience. The rooms were spacious and the food delicious. Although the offerings for the continental breakfast were limited, they were also fresh -- freshly baked muffins and scones. There was the option to purchase a full hot breakfast. I do not understand the complaints in some other reviews about these two options. The complimentary port in the lobby was lovely. I stayed here once about 10 years ago, before the spa existed, and at that time there was a decanter of sherry in every room. This seems like a nice substitute. The cleaning staff was top notch. Really very gracious and polite. The outdoor hot tub and fire pit were blissful. The hot tub in the snow was an unparallelled treat. The indoor salt water pool was never crowded and was the perfect temperature. I loved that although the rooms are expensive, they do not nickel and dime you for wifi, bottled water, in-room snacks (there were many, candies and crackers, plus delicious fresh cookies and tea in the library downstairs, all complimentary) as so many higher end hotels inexplicably do. I agree with the reviewer who said his or her elderly relatives should not have been put on the fourth floor where the elevator doesn't reach. I would have pursued that further at the time of check-in, and asked for a manager -- it sounds like there was a young, inexperienced clerk manning the desk that day. That happens in small towns. The person who complained that no valet lept to help them with their bags must realize these valets are young folks, recent local high school graduates from Abingdon, and not the trained career professionals you will see at a high end hotel in New York City, where you will be paying for than three times as much to stay. If you wanted help with your bags, it would have been appropriate to ask. I found all the staff at the hotel to be responsive and polite. Overall, we could not have had a better stay. read more

Beautiful Hotel, but be cautious if booking a big event. The good: The food was consistent and delicious for a 230+ person wedding. Breakfast was delicious as well daily and was included with the rooms. The valet team was fantastic, friendly, and helpful. There were a handful of really helpful wait staff that were working hard to ensure we had a great stay and wedding reception as well. The overall cost of the event was not completely unreasonable. The event was beautiful and the guests had a fantastic time. We had the parlor, porch, backstage, and ballroom. The bad: The ballroom A/C could not keep up with the large group and read 78 degrees during the reception. There was considerable sweating. Additionally, the wedding coordinator and manager were not what you would expect from a high-end venue. I'll list details below of specific concerns to consider--communication was certainly the biggest challenge. I found the process of hosting a wedding for 230+ people to be unnecessarily stressful when reality did not meet what had been discussed at length in planning meetings. The draw for us to this venue was that we would not have to worry about the finer details, but this was not the case. Customer service and recovery skills fell short of what is seen in comparable hotels and venues. Communication was exceptionally poor. A few of the larger issues are as follows: 1. Room Blocks were not completed as we discussed and many wedding guests had to seek accommodations elsewhere due to the miscommunication. The block given was smaller than was discussed in initial meetings. 2. The bridal suite was described as having two large bathrooms for the wedding party to get ready in and was discussed at length during our first visit with Wendy, the wedding coordinator. Upon check in, we were placed in a lovely, but small suite with a single, dark bathroom with one sink. When the concern was raised, we were told that the hotel was completely full and no other rooms were available. This caused major concern and unfortunately turned out to be completely untrue. One of our groomsmen was placed in the wrong type of room when he checked in later that day and when he went back to the front desk, he was upgraded to beautiful king suite in the center of the hotel that we had been told did not exist. He called and traded with us immediately. Additionally, housekeeping stated the another suite was empty on the floor above us. Whether the event coordinator was working with poor information or not, the situation was exceptionally unfortunate. When you are spending the amount of money we spent on a large wedding at a high-end venue, the regretful decision not to rely upon basic service recovery in this situation was unacceptable. 3. We met and discussed the need for additional bars, bartenders and specific food and beverage options when we placed the deposit. When we received the detailed document, there were errors on every page as if we had not met at all. I honestly thought we had been sent someone else's paperwork. As the deadline was approaching I phoned a with the request for a return phone call to discuss details and to ask questions. Those calls were followed up via email from the coordinator with the promise of return phone calls that didn't come. This happened twice. As the deadline for final paperwork neared, I received an email request for us to sign the incorrect paperwork that was highly unprofessional. It was sent with demands in ALL CAPS and exclamation points on nearly every line of the message from the wedding coordinator. I phoned the hotel manager and shared my discomfort with the situation. Chris listened and stated that he hadn't heard of any issues before, but promised to speak with the coordinator and call me back later that week on Friday. That call never came. We were an out of town couple and had to take off work and drive over two hours from our home to complete the paperwork in person. Went for the easter weekend to ride the Virginia Creeper Trail.This is a beautifully restored and enlarged antebellum home with huge rooms, lovingly tended. The staff was courteous and thoughtful. We had a spa package that included dinner one night in the hotels "Sisters" Restaurant. The meal was outstanding. The spa has recently been enlarged. There is a delightful perfectly heated indoor pool and two large comfortable jacuzzi tubs outside. Our only less than optimal experience was a problem with the facial treatment equipment. Another treatment was substituted and the balance pending was refunded. After dinner sherry in the library free for guests is a nice touch. The beds are comfortable. The place is spotless. Didn't stay here but very nice hotel. We looked around and there is history throughout the main floor. The floors freak pretty good and it was interesting just to see the history within the place. Great looking pool and nice porch. Great library also. Did call about rooms but it was pricey. read more

This place is incredible. I stayed here with my mother over a weekend for a wedding (whose reception was held at the Martha Washington) and I can't say enough good. Here's why you should stay here: 1) Extremely clean. Seriously, their housekeeping is the best of the best. Not only were the rooms completely spotless, but the hotel itself has this amazing smell to it (the fresh and clean smell which you can tell takes alot of work) 2) Staff. The staff was courteous and professional. They left us alone to wander the Inn, but were very friendly when we needed help with something. 3) The layout of the rooms. First off, I love the decor of the rooms. They kept them historical, while adding modern amenities like these amazing walk in showers. I really liked the lighting in the rooms, between the gorgeous natural light and the soft light of the various lamps. 4) The bedding. Besides the bedding being extremely clean (i'm a stickler on that), the beds were some of the best I've ever slept in. If I could take one home, I would. 5) The store inside the hotel was great. It was nice, yet affordable. Great taste. The only two little things I would point out is that our bathroom didn't have a vanity, which made it extremely difficult to do hair and makeup. Also, the valets could use better training. We weren't greeting when coming or leaving, sometimes they were no where to be found, and just didn't give off that welcome vibe. However, those are relatively unimportant things and don't affect my view of the Inn at all. STAY HERE!! read more

A good spa! Had an hour hot-stone massage with Betsy and she did an amazing job. Really nice lounging and shower area, robes and towels. 15% gratuity automatically added and lots of parking in the back. Bummer that the restaurant, Sisters, isn't open for lunch. read more

The inn itself is very nice, but they need a totally new restaurant. We ate lunch at Shoney's that day and dinner at The Martha that night before going over to the Barter. I felt the food at Shoney's was actually better. Need to step up your game. read more
