I found this park not to be cared for and in major need of an overhaul. Too bad because it's in a good proximity to the NP.

I'm currently on a mission to visit all 63 designated National Parks in the United States and this trip marked Park #61 for me - only two more to go! After flying into Seattle, I picked up a rental car, picked up a friend, and headed straight for the North Cascades. First stop: the Wilderness Information Center just before the official park entrance. We browsed the exhibits, picked up passport stamps and Junior Ranger books (a must!), and chatted with some friendly and helpful rangers before continuing on to our campsite at Newhalem Campground. Once we set up camp, we made our way to the main Visitor Center, which was well worth the stop. It had a newly updated park film, an informative mini museum, a decent gift shop, and of course more amazing rangers. Although it was a bit crowded, it's great to see people out and about exploring nature. I originally planned to hike the Skagit River Loop but one of the rangers recommended Ross Lake Dam Trail instead. Despite it being a little bit of a detour, I pivoted, and it was worth it! The hike down to the dam was serene, scenic, and less crowded. For dinner, we tried to get into the restaurant next to Mondo Restaurant, but it was packed!!! Luckily, Mondo came through with great food and hectic yet welcoming service. We wrapped up the evening back at Newhalem Campground. There was a fire ban in place during our visit (no campfires!) but otherwise, the campground was peaceful and perfect for me for a good night's rest. The next morning, we woke up really early to tackle the iconic Maple Pass Loop and WOW. From start to finish, the hike was epic. The wildflowers were blooming, the views were jaw-dropping, and we lucked out with light crowds. Although it's rated hard on AllTrails, I'd say it leans more moderate if you're an experienced hiker. Either way, it's a can't miss trail and an absolute highlight of the trip for me. After our hike, we headed over to Mazama (remote and worth the visit!) before continuing our journey via ferry to Stehekin. One note: the NPS Visitor Center in Stehekin is completely closed for the 2025 season, which was a letdown but it didn't take away from the beauty of the area. I'll be posting separate reviews for the rest of our trip! All in all, North Cascades lives up to the hype and then some. It's wild, remote, and breathtakingly beautiful. The National Parks truly are America's Best Idea, and I hope everyone gets a chance to experience their awe-inspiring landscapes, rich history, and cultural significance. Onward to parks #62 and #63!!!

Approximately 8.2 miles round trip 1900 feet elevation gain, with the highest point 4900 feet. I do recommend getting there early, before 9am, as the parking lot is very small and fills quickly! 4 stars because of the crowds. The trail starts downhill which is a confidence booster especially when you are backpacking. But what goes down, must come up! The last mile is probably what classifies this hike as hard. Hiking up, over loose gravel and boulders and up to almost 5000 feet elevation is difficult for us non-Colorado living people. On the trail you cross many small creek beds that were almost all dried up when we went here at the end of the summer. There is plenty of water at the lake for water source. There are multiple well groomed areas for tents along the trail uphill from the lake. I appreciated these spots at night when the mosquitoes came out and we're a nuisance (only when getting water). Speaking of night... do dress for cold weather! You do get the breeze coming off of Shuksan's glaciers. Very little salmon berries left on the main trail but plenty of huckleberries left. Night time is beautiful. The sky is completely full of stars and the sound of waterfalls coming out of the glaciers is relaxing. No campfires allowed at the lake. Pack out trash and human and animal waste. Trailhead provides blue bags for this.

I initially booked a walk-in site since I was not up to speed on planning this time, meaning I would've had to park and then carry my gear to the site which was very not ideal for my short stay. Thankfully, I kept checking recreation.gov and was able to grab a more convenient drive-up site!! We arrived in the late afternoon on Thursday, checked out our campsite, set up the tent, and ventured over to the main Visitor Center which was a short drive or walk away. After dinner and a short evening hike, we returned to the site and hopped in the tent. While there was a fire pit in the campsite, there was a fire ban in place during our stay so no campfire for us. Boo hoo. I did, however, make full use of the picnic table in the morning which was helpful in packing up and of course used the bear box overnight for my scented items. We packed up and were out by sunrise to get an early start on our hike (Maple Pass Loop - highly recommend!) Overall, Newhalem Campground was clean and the sites were well marked, spacious (enough room for one tent and a vehicle which was what I needed, and surprisingly quiet, even during the peak summer season. While it's not the most remote or rugged campground in the park (not even close), it's a convenient basecamp especially if you're planning to hit the nearby trails or stop by the visitor center. If you can grab a site, go for it!

We stayed in walk-in sites in loop A and it felt like we were the only ones there. Each site has a tent pad, picnic table, and fire ring. The bathrooms are large and clean. The campground connects to many hiking trails, including one that leads to the visitor center. You can stop by the river too! One note- the nearby dam has a siren that will go off if they turn on the water overflow. It went off at 10:30pm and scared us! But it just warns people along the river that the water level might raise suddenly.
