Great spot! Been a customer for years! I find the people who have negative experiences are people who are from the mainland and tourists. The staff has been great and even did some special orders in the past, one year my gf and I got hooked on some random wine and Als always made sure they were stocked, they knew our names and told us we were the only ones to buy it. We had an outstanding experience at Al's Package Store . The staff was knowledgeable, helpful and very friendly. After spending 10 minutes looking at beer & whiskey we styled on two New England brews. Gary and the team were outstanding. My feelings for Al's are mixed: I love the location, but the selection can be a bit lacking and the prices are extremely high, even for the Vineyard. They have a decent beer selection, but the wine options, while copious, are not great and constantly changing so you never know what you're going to be able to find.The have tons of hard liquor options, and a ton of mixers (if you're into those), including several different cachaca for all the caipirhina-loving peeps in this neck of the woods. All that said, it's directly across the street from S&S and that makes it incredibly convenient when you're out and about running errands. read more

I think I went to Al's 3 or 4 times during a day and a half visit to the vineyard. They have a great selection of beer in a giant, walk-in cooler. You can get a koozie at Al's for a buck and change; much better deal than $8 at Black Dog, plus Al's has free stickers. I made a separate visit for ice and another for cigars. They are open til 11, which is nice too. Prices for alcohol are a little steep, but pretty average for the location. When booking your vacation on MV, make sure you're within walking distance of Al's and you'll never go thirsty! read more

Have to agree with other reviews, this place has enough jerks that I go elsewhere - the older gentleman has always given me a hard time. There are a few other liquor stores that have opened recently that have comparable price and selection and recommend going to them. Basically they choose to humiliate and inconvenience random customers, I've seen it happen to others and it has happened to me. I am over a decade from being 21 and they confiscated my ID and called the police a couple years ago. 0 chance they actually thought they were stopping a crime in progress and wasted my and cop's time. Recently my elderly parents asked for assistance getting items to the car, they gave some wise crack reply and did not help. Nothing like being completely humiliated when you go to buy alcohol. I went into als and was asked for my ID which is completely fine, but I have an under 21 ID. I am 22 years-old and it's my driver's license and doesnt expire till 2019 so I haven't gotten over 21 license yet. Upon my ID not scanning they confiscated it along with my credit-card, called the police, and told me nothing. Suddely I am surrounded by 2 policemen and humiliated in front of a full store and was told by an elderly woman working there "why would you ever come here with an under 21 ID?" I was treated like an idiot. Wouldnt recommending if you are hoping to buy from kind human beinga dont go here. read more

Boycott Al's! They are racist pigs! I used to go to Al's as it is convenient to our home in Edgartown. Though I stopped going there immediately after I heard some of the older worker/owners yelling racial slurs across the room. They were discussing a recent football game with a customer and kept saying the N-word. I was appalled, mortified. I felt physically ill after hearing that. In this day and age! Then as I approached the register I saw that their was an African-American gentleman working the register right next to the horrid man saying those racial slurs!.. The blatant disrespect of this man and his race. So horrible. I beg you not to go to the liquor store. Don't support closed minds and intolerance of others based on race etc. Tell your friends! read more

Al's is a waste of time. Don't spend a dime there. They are despicable people who should not be in business with the public. They don't even know how to read an ID correctly so you should be prepared to have the police called on you if they don't understand how to read your birth date. Staff is completely unhelpful and they have a shitty selection of beer and liquor. read more

Al's has one of the best selections in the area. The store has off street parking though on busy weekends parking fills up fast. The prices are pretty reasonable for beer and wine. Their are days when the counter help are very busy and don't have time for pleasant chit chat so don't take it personally but all are very helpful. read more

Beer and wine selection is mediocre at best. Virtually zero craft beers here. Prices at Al's are comparatively the highest in Edgartown. Year round staff is not friendly and after so many years remain surly and arrogant. I go to Jim's in OB. Better selection and very friendly staff. read more

I am a young adult right at the age of 21 and the staff treated me extremely rude. Right when i walked into the store I immediately felt the 6 employees working the front desk staring at me like I had three heads. Of course it didnt help I was the only one in the store either. I quickly found the bottle of tequilla and case of Bud Light I was looking for and proceeded to the front desk to purchase the items. I handed the clerk my out-of-state (like everyone else in MV) ID and he looked at it then gave it to his co-worker, who gave it to another, and who then gave it to another. After the entire staff looked at my ID they scanned it, in which it did scan correctly, but that still wasnt enough. They proceeded to lie to me and say "the scanner is broken. we are going to compare your ID to the book in the back room". I saw the owner go to the back room and pick up a telephone, then another employee stood by the door. After about 15 minutes I asked what was taking so long and then a minute later three police officers walked in the front door. I was SO mad. Humiliated. I couldn't believe this. The owner came out of the back room again with a huge grin on his face and winked at me then gave the police my 'fake' ID. The police asked me a few questions and then took my ID to one of the cars. After a few minutes they came back inside and proceeded to tell the owner that my ID was NOT fake and that he was wrong. He never said sorry, apologized in any way, and still tried to say I was lying. He then tried to cash me out at the counter but I took my business elsewhere. I understand you have to be careful about fakes but this was absolutely ridiculous, a buzzkill, and a waste of my time. Dont waste yours! I now go to Jim's in Oak Bluffs. VERY friendly staff and lower prices then this joke of a store. read more
