Shortly after I arrived, my coworker told me that the place used to be a mental institution/hospital. I'm not sure how you'd react to that, but I kind of loved it and spent my free working minutes on the web, trying to learn about potentially haunted rooms and ghosts of ol' crazy people. Unfortunately, no paranormal activities at this facility. So instead, I spent my evening in the gym facility, took a spin course, and sweat my butt off. The next day I tried the swimming pool and sauna as well. I was also really pleasantly surprised that the locker rooms were equipped with fantastic hair dryers ... AND ... GHD hair straighteners. Those babies cost a couple hundred euros a piece! The lunch menu on the first day included meat and chilli beans, as well as salmon.. and then of course, some salad and lots of desert. I tried the salmon with chili beans and overdosed on proteins. So so so good. The salmon was really fresh. I ended up ordering salmon for dinner as well. The quality of the food there was really fantastic. So the reason I am giving it 4 stars, instead of 5 is because it was just cold and chilly in there. The front door was kept frequently open and I think the windows aren't properly isolated, so when the temperature drops outside, you feel it right away inside. Other than that - definitely recommended. About 35 minutes from the Manchester Airpoint (36 Pound trip by cab). Give it a try!

It's only 30 mins drive from Manchester airport but ring the hotel direct and they will give you the number for a local hackney firm they use. £40 vrs £70. More beer money for me! P.S. Hackney firm are excellent and picked us up in a brand new Toyota Avensis estate. I digress. Arrived at the hotel which is situated on its own 20 acres grounds and it is a Grade II listed building. Very nice setting. It was a Monday afternoon and the reception staff were all older ladies. Unusual but you knew they knew their stuff. Being Irish we asked when did the bar close? (We have been stung before with venues like this and the bar closing early) and to our great surprise she tells us and I quote "The bar closes when you stop drinking". Hallelujah, did she realise the trouble that was going to be in store.... Now now, we did behave ourselves I promise. P.S. This used to be a mental asylum you know! Decor very tasteful and well appointed. A small bit of a labyrinth but you get to were you are going to in nice surroundings. Room has all the 4 star mod cons, room key is a funny plastic card with holes in that you leave in the lock to open. Requested an Iron and board and had them within 5 mins. Bar nice and spacious. Best thing ever was the free american pool table but had UK sized balls, better than that was the garden sized connect 4 set!! Hours of fun for all the guys at the conference. We had teams from the UK, Ireland and Holland. A great night. Bar food really nice and prices not bad either. I'd recommend the burger with bacon and cheese served with great fries and coleslaw all on a wooden chopping board (they must have broken all the plates, ha ha ). Bar staff during the next day were hard to find and slow but that's because I'm used to Irish bar/pubs speeds. If your slow in Ireland you go out of business fast! Great conference facilities and little touches like bowls of sweets (Drumsticks, Fruit Salad and Love Hearts) during the intervals make all the difference. Breakfast & Lunch in the main restaurant was really good with a large choice. All buffet style but it just meant you got more of what you liked. Nice touch is the area between the bar and main restaurant with a free coffee/tea station and bowls of more sweets, apples, bags of crisps etc. These guys know how to look after a business conference. Will be pushing for more training and conferences here.

What a delight this place was! The innkeepers were friendly and accommodating. The rooms were comfortable, perfect temperature, heated tile floor in the en-suite twin washroom and wonderful food. I had a poached egg and smoked salmon breakfast, and packed lunch for our hike the next day. The innkeeper's dog was also a sweetie. I'd definitely recommend this bed and breakfast to everyone passing by Bonsall!

Premier Inn's do what it says on the tin!!…read more This one is located just outside of Burton-On-Trent. It follows the usual set up of no resturant on site but it has a Beefeater located across the car park. My check in was easy enough and the receptionist was polite and awake as I arrived later than I had hoped to. Now my room was on the top floor, I say top but there were only 3 floors so don't get any visions of a penthouse suite. The room was large enough with a double bed and what appears to be a sofa bed, so an ideal room for a small family. The bathroom was clean and modern, as you would expect from this brand. My only gripe with the room was the heat or lack of it. Search as I may I could not locate a radiator or even a heated towel rail in the bathroom. To say the room was cool when what I actually wanted was a warm room would be understating it. Due to the time of night I just wrapped myself up in the duvets provided and went to sleep. When I was leaving in the morning I was asked how was my room and I did tell them it was a little cold for me they said I should have let them know and they would have moved me! If I was staying for more than one short night I would have. So if you are staying here and your room is a little cool let them know and hopefully they will move you.

The couple who run this B&B are incredibly friendly and just lovely people to have a conversation with over one of their trademark HUGE full English breakfasts! They have a wealth of knowledge about places to go and things to do in the nearby Peak District National Park, and are also authorities on the local pubs! The rooms are not big but very cosy and homely, with small en suite bathrooms in every room. The beds are out of this world comfortable, and are so high and well-stocked with pillows that it is a struggle not to think that you may have been coronated some kind of monarch between coming through the door and sitting down on the bed! Rowsley is peaceful and very pretty - a stereotypical Peak District village, and my girlfriend and I always look forward to our stays here.

Car parking is free and you should be able to see your car from your room as its quite a small premier travel inn in terms of rooms and the space it takes up. Maids were friendly as were the reception staff. Managed to get the room in a sale so it cost very little and i was pleasantly surprised as to the quality and service. Great convenient hotel.

Fries are okay. This restaurant mainly caters to people playing golf that might want a snack. It is absolutely not a destination location by any means, doesn't have the quality of food required to make a trip up to Horsley. I would describe this restaurant as "good enough I guess". If there's nothing else and you are starving, it will do. The view of the grounds is better than the sandwiches in the restaurant. The staff is nice though.

Although bar staff can be less than friendly, I actually really like it here, it's quiet without being dead, and the views of the golf course and surrounding countryside are lovely - very relaxing for a drink after work on a summer's evening.

Some of the double rooms have four poster beds and all of the decor is very oldy-worldy but still nice and not in disrepair. The bar is adequately sized and service goes on through the night. The conservatory is huge with plenty of comfortable seating and loads of sunshine if you're lucky! Breakfast the next day was brilliant with almost anything you wanted on the menu. At only a 10-15 minute cab ride into the town centre I'd recommend giving this place a shot.

A small path leads through the garden towards the hotel which is almost completely covered in Ivy. The entrance is through a huge conservatory, which houses a variety of comfortable seating, perfect for retiring with a coffee after a sumptuous meal. Through the conservatory is a bar area, where you can sit and peruse the varied menu. After recovering from the price of the meals we made our choices and were entertained by the gregarious owner, as we waited for our starters to be served to our table. The restaurant itself is impressively furnished, if a little old fashioned, however, the whole place oozes class, making you feel like your meal is a special occasion. A sociable round table aided the evening, and my starter of mushrooms and bacon in a light cheese sauce was impressive, however, my wife's prawn cocktail was less so. Good course spacing before the main course is always a good sign, as are unobtrusive but efficient waiting on staff. My main course of steak tournedos was sublime, with a good selection of vegetables and saute potatoes. But again my wife's seabass was a little dry, which when you're paying this kind of money is disappointing. Desserts were selected from a very large sweet trolley, which reminded me of the 1970s and were again a little disappointing: the Jamaican cheesecake was a little too fatty. Not the best all round meal we have eaten, but the whole experience at the Brookhouse just gives it an extra star. The prices are too prohibitive for regular visits, with a three course meal and drinks, not much shy of £50 per person. Still for a special occasion, it takes some beating.
