We did not have a good experience at Alt-Berliner Biersalon. Although the service was good, the food was extremely disappointing. We had a group of 16 and a fixed menu consisting of a first course of "fruity curry cream soup," a second of "fried sausage in onion sauce with mashed potatoes," and dessert of "berry fruit jelly with vanilla sauce." For my vegetarian entree, I was served a baked potato and side salad. The soup was not good; it had a very strong, pungent taste too it, like the main ingredient was sugar. A couple of people were actually sick to their stomachs upon tasting it. I was told that the sausage and the sauce were very bland, and the potatoes, which I tried, did not taste like potatoes. It had a very odd flavor, like they used too much of a certain ingredient. My entree was awful. The baked potato was cold, and it was drowned in this strange creamy white sauce; I had to shovel off at least a quarter-cup of this stuff until I found my bland potato. My salad was old lettuce piled high, with one a big scoop of dressing in the middle. There was so much lettuce that I had to transfer some to my bread plate. I was told the dessert of fruit jelly and vanilla was fine, but the last time I checked, jelly is NOT vegetarian. I asked if there was gelatin in the jelly, and they said they didn't know. Chances are, it does. Shame on them for not checking/knowing their ingredients. I would've been happy with fresh fruit! Overall, this place seemed like more of a mediocre tourist trap; avoid it if you can.

I came here for a late lunch and early dinner and had a very good experience. This is a lively place with a lot of seating and many screens throughout. It's a good place to get a drink and watch sports on the TV and also get a meal. I had a Weißbier and the Berliner Eisbein. I have never had Eisbein (pork knuckle) before so can't compare the dish at this restaurant to anything, but this Eisbein was very tender and moist with a lot of meat on the bone. It was also very fatty. It came with potatoes and Sauerkraut. All in all, it was a hearty, satisfying meal. I liked the seating arrangement. There were bar stools you could sit at and also high tables right across in the bar area. In addition, there was a restaurant section with regular tables. I sat at one of the high tables in the bar area. It was comfortable. This place is open 24 hours. It was pretty lively for a Sunday mid afternoon. The price for my beer and Eisbein came to just about 20 EUR. I recommend trying this place, especially for travelers.

Was recommended this restaurant by a local tour guide for the live music. Although there was no live music on a Tuesday night when I went for dinner, it had a great pub like atmosphere and it would seem only appropriate to be at a place with the word bier in the name while in Germany. I enjoyed it! Very friendly waitstaff and huge huge meal portions. I had the Kasseler which is smoked pork (think, ham) with sauerkraut and potatoes. It was a tad on the salty side but delicious. The potatoes were perfectly cooked and nice and buttery. Highly recommend if you are in the area and looking for German cuisine as a tourist - most of the other restaurants on the strip were Italian or American.

    Currywurst with pommes frites

I liked it. Then again, I was just in the mood for currywurst. It tasted about as good as currywurst gets, paired with some fries. This is probably not the cheapest place to get this item, but the pub has style and lots of outdoor seating. Plus the location is pretty good. During a soccer (football) match the place filled up. Pretty cool place. Very old, traditional and very "Berlin" if you know what that means. I had the currywurst which is the Berlin specialty. Meh, not such a hot thing as I thought it would be. But still liked the place and would go back.

Good currywurst with French fries and a cold Berliner Kindl. What more do you want? Sit outside and watch the Volk go by!

Food is OK. Drinks are a bit pricey. Place is touristy, but still offers an authentic atmosphere.

Upon arrival, we were asked where we wanted to sit, though we were advised that sitting outside was cooler than sitting inside. So we did just that. As they receive many tourists, they had the ingredients in English under each dish. Our server was friendly and showed us all the photos of the dishes on his iPad, which was helpful as we were not familiar with many of the dishes. He also let us know what items were not included on the menu and showed us the photos. We all ordered still water (in bottles), the Berliner Weisse, and beers. For myself, I ordered the Beef Gulasch with egg noodles (Rinder-Gulasch mit Pilzen & Spatzle). My husband ordered the giant currywurst with french fries (Berliner Currywurst XL mit Pommes frites). My parents ordered a salad and one of the non-menu special dishes that had pork loin, gulasch, bean sprouts, and mashed potatoes. The Rinder-Gulasch mit Pilzen & Spatzle had an enormous portion of egg noodles compared to the amount of the beef gulasch. However, since the gulasch was on the saltier side, eating the gulasch along with heaping amounts of the egg noodles helped balance out the taste. The beef was also tender and paired well with the texture of the egg noodle. The Berliner Currywurst XL mit Pommes frites was... interesting. I was expecting the currywurst to have a meaty texture, but when I bit into it, I found the texture spongey like tofu. If I was told the currywurst was vegan, I would have believed it. I think they should have included more of the sauce (ketchup) that came with it, but again, this is Germany, and you have to request and pay for anything extra here. My husband, who typically eats heavy, could not finish this plate as we were all sampling each other's food and he really liked my Rinder-Gulasch. When we come back to Berlin, we would love to try the other items on their menu. I highly recommend this place!

We ordered the schnitzel and the bratwurst, which came with cabbage and potato salad, and paired everything with a Berliner Kindl and a Pilsner. The schnitzel was fantastic--crispy, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor--while the bratwurst was equally delicious. The cabbage and potato salad complemented the sausage beautifully, and I found myself piling both onto my schnitzel because they were that good! The true star of the evening, however, was the apple strudel. Freshly made, perfectly sweet, and easily the best apple strudel I had in Berlin. We had a reservation, which I'd recommend since the restaurant filled up quickly during dinner service. The service was fast, friendly, and the staff spoke excellent English, making the experience easy and welcoming for visitors. Since it was a warm evening, we chose the outdoor seating, which made for a lovely dinner, though the indoor dining room has the cozy charm of a traditional German pub. If you're looking for hearty, authentic German food done right, Dicke Wirtin is an absolute must-visit.

This a great gem in Berlin! A must visit when in town…read more Old, traditional decor with random signs and things. Really has that old time Germany feeling. Read the reviews and saw that it is a popular place and reservations are recommended. We were dining early (4:45) and thought it wouldn't be hard to get in with a party of two. We did get a table but under the condition that we'd be done by 6pm. By that time, we could see why. The place started to fill up. Both of our meals were excellent. Coworker had the schnitzel (I know someone who thinks that word is funny) and I had the beef tips in a mushroom sauce over spaetzle. Soooo, soooo, good! Plate clearing good. Schnitzel was also excellent. Big portions. Will repeat
