you konw the way your mom is really good with a needle and thread and she can take up any trousers and take in any skirt? she can even take in the most delicate of dresses and ensure that it comes out looking perfectly? an you know the way if you tried it it would look like it was attacked by somebody with a ball of thread and a needle and there will be holes and gatherings where there arent supposed to be holes and gatherings. or if its not like that the work you do will fall apart the minute you get outside the door? so what do you do if your mom isnt there to cater for your tailoring needs and what if you have realised that you should not attempt it yourself? well this is the place for you! quick and cheap and professional, job done as good as your mom would do it, you just have to pay for it here! but sure at least it wont fall apart on your way home! read more

Oh the perils of modern life and the over exultation of academia. OK you read Paradise Lost and mused over the meaning of To The Lighthouse but can you sew? Can you fix the leaky faucet in your kitchen? Sometimes I wonder what type of society we are making, I mean not everyone can be a TV presenter. Thankfully for people like me that cannot sew or alter my clothes places like this are a Godsend. I feel trades people should be elevated higher then so many of academic programmes, I for one would have loved to have been a carpenter but there is still time! I got the buttons on my coat and cardigan re-sewn and the zipper in my trousers replaced. It came to €38. The folks are very friendly in there and efficient. I dropped it in on a Wednesday at 4pm and they said that it would be ready noon the next day. Teeming with customers of all backgrounds. The one pain is that it's up several flights of stairs... 5euro for 2 buttons to be sewn back on and a pocket fixed. I checked the pocket before leaving and it was like new! You would have never had been able to tell that it had been ripped open! I have come here twice for alterations to quite "complicated" dresses - IE dressed with quite delicate material or length changes that need to be asymmetrical because the type of dress. Both times the service was really friendly and I'm really happy with the quality of the outcome. It's perfect. And it only takes a few days. The second time I came here to pick up a dress (today) I was a bit unhappy with the length, it was still too long, and I was feeling under pressure as I needed it for en event tomorrow night, so the lady fixed it up on the spot for me and the outcome was exactly what I wanted. Their prices are decent too - I was advised the maximum you pay for a dress alteration is 40 Euro (and that's max, could be less), I think that's very very reasonable really. Definitely recommend this place! Only downside is they don't accept cards, but so long as you know that (and they advertise it quite clearly in the shop) it's fine. read more

I found this place via all the excellent Yelp reviews as I needed a comic event cosplay costume altered. It's easy to get to, located upstairs near a bar on South Anne street just of Grafton street. I got a white shirt, the costume top and corset taken in at the waist, bust and the sleeve width reduced, so there was a lot of tailoring done to it but they did it perfectly for me, I couldn't have been happier. The first time after altering, it was still a bit lose so they were happy to take it in a bit more in which case I came back 2 days after. They do the measurements and everything while wearing the clothes to get it accurately which was great. The costume I had given was very detailed and complex and the fabric was thick, but they had it ready in 4 days. The only thing that makes me give a 4 and not 5 star review is the price as I found them a bit expensive. For the 3 items I paid a total of €66, so I'm guessing that it was either 22 per item, or the costume was more and the white shirt was less but overall, it's a bit pricy. However, they did a fantastic job and there were a few customers with debs dresses for alteration, so I'd say for an important or complex items of clothing, I would highly recommend them for both quality and service. I should have taken a picture of my trousers (nice Banana Republic light wool) before bringing them in. Tearing at the cuffs, bike grease marks. Bad. Bad. "Can you save these?" "Yeah, of course. Come back in a week because we'll send them to the dry cleaners....for the grease". The other customers, obviously regulars, said that it was the place.... So two weeks later, I came in and picked them up. Amazing. Like a resurrection of my trousers. Almost like new, though you could tell there was work. Needed two pairs of jeans hemmed and was very happy with the service. Staff are friendly and helpful, they also really know their stuff: the jeans were new and still had tags on, she immediately added an inch to compensate the inevitable shrink of the first wash, something I would have forgot! 28 euros total to hem two pairs of jeans, which could have been done by the manufacturer, they're perfect. Turn around time was just a few days. Make sure you bring cash before you trek up all those stairs! They don't accept cards. I'd come back for any alteration needs I might have! Service is fast and there are always people coming and going, so it seems they have plenty of business. What I needed was very basic but they had lots of suits and dresses waiting for collection, so I'd have confidence in bringing a more complicated alteration if I ever had the need. I've been going to these guys for so many years, now. The main thing I've been bringing to them is jeans and some chinos. I've been getting 2 things done - reinforcing the undercarriage (crotch area) because of excessive wearing (no shame!) and also getting jeans taken up (I somehow thought I was taller than I actually, for quite a few years). They always get it spot on. Recently I've brought some shirts to them, that I get taken up (so they can be worn with jeans without having to tuck them in). Again, perfect job. They've breathed new life into so many clothes of mine and also made brand new clothes wearable. The reason I keep going back to them is that they are so nice. It seems to be a family business, which I love to support. They're a small operation but they have their shiz together! I've actually witnessed some pretentious "customers" giving them stick, but they handle it like pros. I'm giving them a full 5 stars and I've never had anything but great experiences with them. There is this extremely irritating new habit in leg-wear these days that dictates all trousers must be uniformly made in size 'giant' then left to you, the paying costumer, to fix. Meaning that, unless you bought trousers because your boat needed a new sail, or because you're stilts were getting cold, or indeed that you needed something stylish to wear to your upcoming Guiness Book of World Records measuring event, that you'll need to take them to a tailor to have them turned into something that you can use on you legs. The only real plus side to this system is that there's no longer any point or need to try anything on anymore. For this reason I have more and more call to visit the Alteration Centre. These guys are good, very centrally located, family run and within my budget. It costs €12 to have trousers taken up and most often they'll be ready the very next day. They do the whole gamut of alterations and although I have yet to avail of any of these expertise by the looks of the clothes they have on the rails for collection, debs dresses, coats, suits, you name it, they're probably up to the task, read more

Over the holidays I bought two pairs of jeans in the usual length I get them--but it seems the lengths are either getting longer or I'm shrinking (I'm not). I used The Alteration Centre on a semi frequent basis until recently. Over a year ago I bought a vintage coat in to be altered. When I got it back they had melted and fused the inner button to the lining, but they denied it, Then the second time, they sewed the button through the pocket of the coat!!! Since then two of the resewn buttons have fallen off as they were poorly attached. Last year I brought a vintage dress and pair of trousers in to be altered, the dress has some light moth hole damage which I pointed out in several places to the woman attending to me on that day. When I got it back there were still many holes that needed attention, when I returned for it a second time there were make up marks rubbed on front of the dress - not mine! Once bitten, twice shy. I will be avoiding this service in future and will go to a more independent dressmaker for a better service as I am sorely disappointed. read more

I used the Alteration Centre to take in a bridesmaid dress. While the final product turned out fine, I do not think I will be returning here for any other alterations. While trying on the dress to pick it up, the elderly women working there decided to throw away the nice plastic bag the dress had been hanging in. She proceeded to fold the dress on the counter and put it in a small plastic bag. I was not happy about his not only because I wanted to keep the dress hanging but stains had been placed on the dress after she folded it on the counter (where there were drinks and other food items!!!!) This place is not a professional establishment and I will be trying out Des Byrnes alterations on Grafton next time. read more

AVOID.....AVOID......AVOID Dropped a black dress into the Alteration Centre for a very small running stitch up the front of the dress, the dress has one long gold chain that acts as the straps. I came back the following day to collect the dress and the chain was broken in half. The dress was in perfect condition dropping it in and they claim it was to no fault of theres that the chain has broken. He also asked if I had brought the dress home and attached the chain myself... the dress had not left there shop at this point. Not only did I still have to pay €8 for the tiny running stitch, but I also experienced the worst customers service. If you are desperate and have to leave your garments here, take as many photos as possible so they can not blame you, but avoid if possible. read more

Asked for trousers to be taken up slightly , get them home only to find the most ridiculous turn ups held in place with a piece two pieces of thread , shocking lazy work and for what I was charged I was seriously let down . I contacted Alteration Centre on Sunday April 3 saying that I bought a fuschia bridesmaid dress recently online and unfortunately, it does not suit me on the top. I really needed it to be fixed otherwise it was going to be nipplegate. :-P ;-) I said I could only come on Saturday April 9 as I work 9 to 6 Monday to Friday. I received a reply from Claire the owner a few hours later, very prompt feedback, so I was pleased, saying I could pop in anytime as they also do Express Alteration. So I went there and I felt better seeing the work could be done well and on time. I was told it was going to cost 48 Euros. A bit pricy as I was expecting a price around 35 Euros as an other customer said in her comment. Did not have the time/courage to compare with other Alteration Centres so I let it there. I came back a week later: Saturday April 16. The dress was amazing and fitting me like a glove. I was very happy with the work done and paid the 48 Euros without complaining. I wore the dress for my sister's wedding on Saturday April 23 and was disappointed to notice a sewing needle has been forgotten in my dress. I could have hurt babies who sat on my lap with that. It was so stuck that I could not even remove it myself. So I'd say the job was done but there is this only downside to state. Thank you Alteration Centre. I will probably come back. read more
