Alternative Cremation allowed me to fulfill my mom's wishes for a simple cremation. She passed on a Friday evening; we made the call to Alternative, told them we'd like to spend just a bit more time with her, and they came to pick her up at the appointed time later that evening. The gentlemen who came were professional, and they treated my mom like they were taking care of their mother. I know my mom's soul was gone from her body, but her body is all I knew in this life. Alternative showed great respect for her, as well as for those of us mom left behind. Brian and Anna have been wonderful throughout the "business" portion of my mom's death. Brian expertly explained the process, as well as set expectations as to the timeframes of death during the holiday season. Never a good time when you have to say goodbye to a loved one, though Lenny (owner) and Anna were terrific at making it a little bit easier to get through a truly terrible time. Anna was sincere and forthright with my nephew who had some questions about the cremation process. She allayed all his concerns and we moved forward in the process. I had to fly to Colorado from California to pick up my loved one's remains. I needed a simple cremation, no funeral, and called 4 different funeral home companies prior to flying to Colorado. Alternative Cremation offered different levels of service to choose from and was the only place that didn't give me a sales pitch or try to gouge me financially. In fact their pricing was the most straightforward and affordable. I even called the Colorado Springs coroner's office and they confirmed that AC was a legitimate and ethical company. Lenny, the owner, handled the preliminaries by phone and email and when I arrived things were already taken care of. Not the happiest time, but these things have to be done. Decedent was to be transported to Crown Hill and her cremains added to cremains of her husband. We had Jean cremated locally and transported the cremains ourselves, avoiding the complications and costs of transporting a body to Denver. To meld the ashes we needed a double urn. The urn was actually more of a box, beautifully made with interlocking hearts engraved on the front. Inside the box was a removable partition to allow for segregation or melding of the ashes as desired. I took one star away because they charge to use a credit card. It is my understanding that this violates merchant agreements with the card issuer, but I was in no mood to discuss, we chose to pay by check. The body was removed from our home respectfully and with diligence. The pricing policies seemed straightforward, my wife handled the calls and their price/service seemed most appropriate. I probably would use someone like Swan-Law if I expected a big turnout, was doing a viewing and needed all the bells and whistles, but in this case Jean had outlived most of her church friends and neighbors and hadn't made new ones since she moved to Colorado Springs because she couldn't get out much. read more

First of all, I know from experience that if you write a negative review about Alternative Cremation on their Facebook page, they will delete it and 'unfriend' you. That is why I am posting this where they cannot control its removal. Most important, beware of using Alternative Cremation if you are trying to get the Denver Human Services Burial Services Unit (DHSBSU) benefit that may entitle your Denver resident loved one to get financial help with their final arrangements. ASK BEFORE you sign a contract with ANY final arrangements company if they work with DHSBSU so that you have a chance of getting that benefit (the reputable companies know that you have up to a year to apply for this benefit). If you don't ask Alternative Cremation, they will offer you a "great" cash deal, but then you'll find that you can't get the DHSBSU benefit. Branden at Alternative Cremation will tell you that THEY have to apply for you to get this benefit. NOT TRUE! The CLIENT has to apply for it!! By the time you learn the process for getting the DHSBSU financial assistance and you've already signed a contract with them, and they will consider your case CLOSED. End of story. NO help or support. They will refuse to accept the electronic payment that DHSBSU will gladly send to them, and then issue a refund check for the amount of the benefit to you. Branden with Alternative Cremation will tell you that you should ask DHSBSU to send the check to you, but they cannot. Their electronic payment system is set up (perhaps to discourage fraud) to issue payment only to the service provider. Alternative Cremation took away the opportunity for my Mom to depart this world with the dignity of having used her last cent to cover her final expense, without her loved ones having to chip in. The irony with working with a company and not knowing about DHSBSU is that it is the final arrangements company that sends the death certificate to the family of the deceased. Because Alternative Cremation includes the cost of the death certificate in their fees, they have a strong upper hand in controlling release of the very document that allows one to learn that they chose the wrong company to handle their loved one's final arrangements. This document may be needed to access the bank record of the deceased, which is part of what must be provided to apply for benefits from DHSBSU. In short, DON'T USE ALTERNATIVE CREMATION for services if you know a Denver resident who is entitled to the Denver Human Services Burial Services Unit benefit. read more
