Located this place while searching for a Cremation provider for my Father in Louisiana. Due to Louisiana laws, Cremations are very expensive. Due to my Father not having Life Insurance & his death being totally unexpected, we were far from ready for this. Either emotionally or financially. I began my interactions with this Company with AJ, by the time the Coroner was ready to release my Father. We contacted Heritage back to hear that AJ was forced out of State. The woman I spoke to got me over to Victoria who is the Office Manager & she was EXCEPTIONAL. Took care of my Father & my Family with such care, concern & pure professionalism. Victoria made it a point to keep in touch with me the whole way. In fact, she just texted me to advise me, my Father's cremains will be shipped in the morning. I read these reviews after the fact, but I was not worried. I was confident with the service Victoria provided. We dodged a bullet on this one. After reading the numerous reviews and complaints as well as criminal charges against this company we decided not to use them. I started to get suspicious when my sister-in-law was talking about their services and the need for a prepaid credit card for payment. We wanted to pay crematorium directly with a credit card so I looked for a phone number for their company. Since when does a cremation or funeral home have a 800 number? After reading that, I understood that they were some kind of middleman making arrangements for the cremation but not performing it. I then googled the address of the company that they are contracted with. They happen to have a hole in the wall funeral store front running under two different funeral home names. That prompted me again to Google some more. They operate under two company names Legacy Cremation Funeral Services and Heritage Cremation provider. It's absolutely despicable that someone could treat another person in such a manner. My sister-in-law was in the middle of signing contract documents to get them faxed to send to Legacy. I'm so glad we were able to intervene to stop this so that we can find a reputable, local crematorium. Based on the reviews, numerous news articles and court documents about these two companies scamming individuals and not providing them the service they were expecting, is easy to come to the summation that this company would not likely render the contracted services. Remember that if something looks too good to be true it probably is. Always perform due diligence and make sure you are dealing with a reputable funeral home. Just a miserable experience. They appeared via Google search as what appeared to be a local provider with decent prices. They are middlemen. I gave permission for them to pick up our loved ones body and that was THE ONLY thing that occurred quickly. Of course that happened fast as they have your business once they have the body. Funeral "director" was a joke, very, very, hesitant to provide any info. Prices on their webpage are not actually offered. $695? Sure I'll take it. Not a current price, that'll be $895 instead. Honestly, if I could give a zero star review, I absolutely would. My mother passed away and I started making calls to carry out her final wishes. When I called Heritage, what attracted me was the perceptively low cost of the service. Naturally, I went with them due to the cost friendly price I was told on the phone. My mother was picked up from the hospital and taken to a funeral home. I then got the invoice from Heritage and this is where it gets ugly. The cost was 60% increased from the price I was told over the phone. There were tons of costs listed that the representative, "Prudence", claimed were "county fees they could not avoid". I then lowered the amount of death certificates and, what do you know, the cost remained the exact same! I started researching and found out they are a 3rd party broker out of some other state. BBB gives them a D- because of their shady business practices. Many of their "victims" experienced the same thing I did. I ended up finding out where my mother's body was at and worked directly with the funeral home and got a substantially better cost and service. Seriously... the reviews on the Heritage website must be prefab... and we are a family of gullible suckers who fell for it. We are a simple family with a simple father who passed very, very quickly. We wanted to uphold his wishes of a simple crematorium; cremate and return his remains to us, no service, so in true family tradition we could have our own backyard celebration so to speak to celebrate his life per his wishes. In addition, we are of simple means, and have little in the way of resources and were assured that Heritage was the way to go given our limited resources, and specific desires. So we set out contacting Heritage after his sudden passing to being the arrangements. My father passed on Monday, 10/19. Tuesday, 10/20 we were able to get all the paperwork competed in accordance with their guidelines and submitted to them via fax. Tuesday night we received a call from Heritage that everything had been taken care of and that my father's body was going to be picked up at the hospital today, taken care of, and on his way back to us as soon as possible. Everything was about to be over and he would be back with us soon and we would have some sort of closure. So here were sit WEDNESDAY night planning details for his celebration of life and we get a call from Heritage advising us that they 'regret to inform us that they have found themselves in an overbooked situation and are now unable to pick up our father' leaving us high and dry with no freakin' clue as to what to do. The woman didn't even offer any alternatives, or where to go or what to do, just hey, we're booked, we can't get him, and that he's still at the hospital: we, are back at square one. ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME !!!!!????? I understand that the choice to go with Heritage is an economical one that those with not many means resort to, but, that doesn't mean that their feelings, concerns, and should be dumped on and their respect shat on with no consideration for the raw feelings of those who have just lost a loved one. The way this was handled was absolutely inexcusable and so disgusting I almost threw up in my mouth. My mother is crushed, as is my family. Knowing that he was almost home to but now that he is still sitting in the morgue in the hospital like some unclaimed, unidentified body... The level of unprofessionalism and disrespect exhibited by Heritage during a time such as this is a level that I cannot even begin to comprehend. As an additional word of caution, while frantically calling around, we found one company, whose representative after we told them we were and that we had been dealing with Heritage was like, "Oh, yea, you don't want to do that..." My heart hurts for the families that have dealt with this firm. I am a hometown funeral director and was just bullied by one of their employees, Tracey. She lied to me in the hopes that I would agree to perform our cremation service for less than the city pays for the indigent and homeless! Funeral directors are very hardworking people and we are the ones ready 24/7/365 (yes, even in the middle of the night and on Christmas Day) to respond to families with an immediate need. Our prices are well below the other firms in town and are very fair. Heritage Cremation Provider swindles families out of money during a difficult time by adding fees on top of the funeral home prices while never actually assisting with the body or the cremation. Please remember that when dealing with the death of a family member you are going to get what you pay for. You only have one opportunity to honor a loved one who has passed away. The cheapest price is never going to get you the best service. Unethical. Lost a friend and looked into cremation. It was complicated because she lacked a will and POA but managed to get her identify probated. Heritage quoted $1000 and change to cremate, send the remains to my address and provide two certificates of death. When they got around to being ready to transport I got a bill for over $1500 with some real vague changes added. I called them on it and the response was "take it or leave it". Well, I LEFT iT!! Does anyone know to contact yelp? When I search heritage cremation I can't find it on yelp but when I google it, it brings me to the yelp reviews. No wonder I had no idea how bad this place was. I agree that if I could give it 0 stars I would. My mother passed away in the middle of the night on a Tuesday. Hospice let heritage know. I call and ask how long to cremate so I can plan taking time off work (I live 7-8 hour drive from where she passed away). I'm told 3-5 business days. So I plan to drive down Monday. Monday morning they call and email me a packet of papers saying they can't start the process until the papers are filled out and if they aren't filled out today there will be a daily late fee/charge. Woulda been nice if they could've sent me those papers the week prior . And then I'm told "the doctor has 10 business days to sign the death certificate and the cremation process can't be started until it's signed". So of course I can't take that many days off of work so I drive back to work without my mother's remains. So then of course they charge me $150 to ship her to where I live. how is this place still in business?!?!?! read more

Heritage, also known as Legacy, has been the subject of numerous consumer complaints and has had warnings issued about it from the Better Business Bureau and from the National Funeral Directors Association. Their business model is to sell cheap pre-need cremations without actually having facilities to do the work in the states they serve. Long story short- they are NOT licensed to operate in the state we were in (Ohio). They are essentially the middle-man, using 3rd party local funeral homes to complete the work. Google how many other state attorney generals have shut them down for bad business practices. I just came across two other stories by Denver, CO news agencies about their bait-and-switch tactics. And if that's not enough for you- they REFUSED TO TELL ME WHERE MY DEAD GRANDMOTHER WAS BEING HELD. Yep- refused to tell me the name of the local funeral home who picked up her body. I was answered with things like "Why do you want to know where her body is?" and "Who really cares where she's at, she's at peace now and in good hands". Eventually, I got the name of the funeral home and called them- there was NO RECORD of her being there. Yet somehow, Sabrina from HCP was able to reassure me "Not to worry, we are taking great care of her, she's in our care now"..... I asked Sabrina if she personally had seen my grandmother's body and knows it's in the state- she said no, that she's not located here. "But don't worry Deanna, we have her and she's in good hands"....SORRY not about to take the word of some lady who isn't even here, when the funeral home themselves just told me they have no record of her. For an entire day, no one from this company or the 3rd party (local) funeral home they contracted could tell me where my dear grandma's body lay (Mind you, she died 4 days before Christmas, so it's already a crazy hectic time without them losing her body!) I opted to move forward instead with the Heritage Cremation Society, a local company in business for over 150 years in the Akron area. Heritage PROVIDERS purposefully used a name very similar to the local company in hopes of tricking people (like they accomplished with us, and countless others). Please do your research into these people before using them. The kind folks at SOCIETY have gone above and beyond in helping me fix this mess, and were already all-too-familiar with the people and tactics of Heritage Cremation Providers. After I informed them that another local company would be taking over care of my grandma's body and returning the remains, AJ, the owner, started calling me, saying he would not release my grandma's body until I paid him almost $700 (mind you, the initial quote for everything was only $900). He began cussing at me, threatening to come "find me" and "take the money that is owed to him" and again, refusing to let my grandmother's body be released to the local, reputable cremation provider. He called repeatedly, and every single call I ever received from this company was from a "restricted" number.... any reputable business has an actual business phone line! For two days AFTER I received confirmation that the local, reputable place got Grandma and she's in their care, AJ continued to call me (over half a dozen times per day) and say that he wouldn't give up her body (again, even though we already had it back....scare tactics much?). The state of Ohio already has a case open into these frauds, it wasn't until I mentioned that I'd be contacting him that AJ has finally quit harassing me. I'm a licensed funeral director, and was browsing one evening when Heritage's name and link to their site popped up as being in my city. I had never heard of this firm. After investigating, I've found that this "company" is owned by a family member of the person referred to as AJ. His license was revoked several years ago. They aren't anything they purport to be, and have been sued or investigated in several states. Florida, Arkansas, Oregon, just to name a few. Please do not fall prey to their scam. They aren't licensed to operate in any of the complaining states. They own no funeral homes or crematories. They position themselves to be a "middle man" in the process. DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE. I WON'T SAY THEY ARE SCAMMERS AS I DID GET A SERVICE, BUT THEY ARE NOT WHAT THEY SEEM. We made the mistake of going with this company because we "thought" it would be the easiest and most cost effective way to provide the simple cremation my Mother requested. The only thing "simple" about this whole ordeal, was the initial phone call, after that, everything went downhill quickly. As stated by others, this company disguises itself as a "local" service or middleman so you only have 1 place to deal with and they take care of the rest. Nothing could be further from the truth! Yes, they are a 3rd party, but they did virtually NOTHING. I called them, they called the local funeral home and paid them 1/2 of what they charged me to retrieve and cremate her body. I had to continuously call Heritage Cremation Provider for information of where the body was taken, what needed to be done next, etc., etc. It was the HOLIDAYS so I cut them a little slack as it is difficult to get things done and contact the right people, but it was still very frustrating. The only time they were prompt was when THEY wanted something. They called demanding payment in full before releasing Mom's ashes, which the local funeral home had already called us to come pick up. I had no problem paying first, but, I had yet to receive an invoice, yet their attitude was that I had been dragging MY feet. As it turns out, it is illegal to hold cremains/remains hostage for payment according to the funeral home. Ok, so we get Mom's cremains, finally feel a little better about things, but now waiting on the Death Certificate. 3 weeks go by and nothing. Went to the Health Department directly to purchase them and was told they did not have it, waiting on the funeral home to file the paperwork. Long story short, Heritage Cremation Providers claimed the local funeral home should have done it, but the local guy says he was never paid to nor given ANY of the information from the hospital to file. He was VERY kind and supportive and was willing to file the DC if I could get he hospital to resend the info to him. Back to Heritage I went since this was supposed what I paid them to take care of, took several days of back and forth, but finally it was taken care of. The local funeral director filed the certificate and I went to pick them up myself. Heritage DID refund me the money they had charged me for the DCs, which kind of surprised me. The people I dealt with at Heritage were all nice enough and seemed to try to be doing right by me, but overall it was a VERY trying experience. At a time when simplicity is what is needed, it was anything but. If you are looking for affordable cremations for your loved one, go to your local funeral home. Most are willing to work with you and your financial restrictions or at least match any other offer you may have received elsewhere, plus you have that face-to-face interaction that is very reassuring during probably the worst time of your life. read more

After the passing of my mother I thought we had experienced the worst loss, but this company made it highly impossible to focus on her passing as they had her body, but could not tell us for days where she was located. We could never get the director on the phone after asking for days to speak to him. The price we were originally quoted doubled before all was said and done, even though we called ahead of time and asked what we thought were all the right questions. Was told my son's cremation would be $1150 after he died in a car accident. I paid $350 right away then after cheering help from friends and my church, we raised another $800. When I sent them the money the still refuses to send my son's ashes, telling me that the price went up and I still owed them another $145 for some reason. Now they say they've shipped his ashes to Florida and they are holding them ransom. After all I've been through losing my son, I have to go through this indignity. Awful company. Don't use these people, my Father passed away and I was the one who had to get the coroner, crematorium, and doctor going on all the paperwork that needed to be done. When I complained about why it had taken over 2 weeks to get the cremation done, when they had told me 4 to 5 business days, they blamed it on the doctor. I felt like they just did not care at all. They are a third party broker type place, your better off going to your local crematorium to make arrangements for your loved one, these guys are basically the middle man. We contacted Heritage, also known as Legacy Funeral Services, for an affordable cremation as our loved one had no insurance. After having spoken with AJ Damiano and was told all the services the cremation included and excluded, I was quoted a price of $1,295. I agreed and completed the paperwork they sent me. Two days later I received the bill and it was $600.00 more than the quote. I reviewed the line item costs and found items that I was originally told were covered were now a cost. I called back and talked to a receptionist and was told she didn't create the bill. I asked to have the person who created the bill to call me back, today. She agreed. Never heard back from them. Thankfully I became suspicious and learned of their BBB rating of F and they had tried this same bait and switch tactic in Florida, Georgia, Texas and of course Colorado. I have also filed a complaint with the New Mexico Boards and Commissions Division. My story is that I live in Austin, TX. My mother passed away in Alamogordo, NM. I communicated with AJ a few days before my mother's death. He said they would handle the cremation for $995.00. When my mother passed, I called, they picked up her body and took it to PCS in Alamogordo for cremation. Two days later AJ called me and advised that they would no longer be handling the matter and were backing out. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? No explanation. No alternative. Just, 'we are out'. In the meantime, PCS was holding my mother's body for a $500.00 pick up fee - it was a 10 minute ride TOPS! Of course, they would be happy to do the cremation for $1,575!!! That is outrageous!!! Are Heritage and PCS in cahoots with each other? I ended up having a funeral home in El Paso - about 1.5 hours away - pick up the body from PCS and it was still a lot less expensive. Not worthy of 1star. Recently my loved one passed away. When hospice contacted Herritage they said it would take 3 hours to arrive. They suggested we might want to find someone else. At 3am and grief stricken , we certainly were not going to start making calls to find another company. We chose to wait. After 4 hours we called and they said it would be another 2 hours. 2 hours later , no arrival. We called back and they instructed us to call another funeral home that they had contacted to assist in the pick up of our loved one. When we called them they had no idea what we were talking about. We called hospice for assistance. They called Heritage and were told they were on the way . They didn't show up. After 12 hours with our loved one, dead, in a hospital bed in our living room we finally called "going home" cremation and they arrived to help. Imagine the pain for our loved ones family. His wife, children, having to watch him deceased for 14 hours. After this terrible ordeal, I contacted Heritage to let them know how terribly we had been treated by their unprofessional behavior. This review is from NE Tennessee. We have a family member who is terminally ill and were checking on services in advance. The person on the phone gave the information and all that. The next day a guy shows up at the front door looking for the ill person, I told him she was in the hospital. He tried to sell pre plans for cremation that could run in the thousands of dollars, refused to give a card or any info. Called Heritage back and they said they didn't give out information. Yes they did, they were the only ones we called. Talked to another local service and they said Heritage farms out cremations and the local companies have trouble getting paid. I called them 3 yrs ago about setting up my own cremation in advance because I don't have any family left to do it when I go. The guy I spoke to quoted me 1,300. Emailed me the paperwork to print out, sign and mail back to them with the full amount in a money order. I asked how it works. He said whoever finds me just has to make a call to them and they will come and take care of everything. So I signed the papers, which also stated it was non-refundable, and mailed them with a money order. ... Yesterday, 3 yrs later they sent me my money order back and a letter saying they aren't a pre-need provider. So a little pissed I take the money order to the bank and the bank says it's too old to cash. and....because it's the money order i sent them, it's made out to Heritage not me! OMG! So now i'm waiting to hear from the bank if they see any options. read more

My loved one passed away Monday, November 12, 2018 in the State of Maryland where their remains were supposed to handled by the local funeral home Heritage Cremation Provider/Legacy Funeral Services the family found online, as I am currently residing in California. My loved one was in a nursing facility when they expired and we were told that we only had 8 hours to make arrangements to have them removed from the facility. Due to financial restraints and distance the rest of the family was not able to get there in time to meet the 8 hour deadline set by the facility. My loved one is from Virginia and had to be transferred to Hyattsville, MD for care. When we originally contacted the funeral home to see if they can transport the remains within the few hours we had left and we were given a price of $975 which would include EVERYTHING such as pick-up, processing cremation, 1 death certificate (additional would be extra), and shipping the remains. We verified this amount with the supposed funeral home director named "AJ" around 2 or 3am ET. because of the financial limitations, and he assured us on the call that would be the exact amount and that he would pick-up my loved one and to call later in the morning during business hours to make the half down payment that was "required" for the pick-up to happen. We also verified that the half down amount was the half of the  $975 and again he agreed. We called back later in the morning as suggested first to the nursing facility to confirm the pick-up and then to "AJ" at the funeral home to make the payment. He then told us that we can hold off on making the payment at that moment because we were still trying to gather the remaining owed amount, the other half of the $975. He asked how long and we said a few days and he asked if 7 days would be enough time and we agreed. However, we didn't need the 7 days and called back within 2-3 days to make the payment only to be told at that time by Kirsten the "case worker" the amount owed was around $1349,  not including the shipping cost that was added after this payment which is later explained. We asked where this amount came from and she could not really explain as we told her AJ said $975. We spoke with AJ again and asked him why the price changed and that he said $975 that night/morning over the phone, then he lied and said that he told us $995 and we told him that he did NOT and at the time of first call we kept asking was he sure when he gave that amount and he just said, "No, I said $995". It was 3 people on the call with him and we all know what he said. We felt like we could not do anything because they already had our loved one. We then asked what the extra money was for and he said other fees like county fees. We paid the full balance by that Friday which is fairly reasonable for families to figure arrangements. This was the first hard inclination that it was going down hill after that payment was made due to the lying about the cost and how and when he said they would take the payment. However, being that the decease's spouse is incarcerated, legal documentation needed to be signed by them in which we were unaware of before we called to check on the status of the cremation process. We were then told, "oh we have to have the spouse's signature before we can perform the cremation". We were told that they would get in contact with the prison administration to request the documents and signature. We waited a few days and called on separate occasions, the family,  and spoke with Kirsten who is severely lacking in customer service only to be told that she hasn't heard from them. We called within another day or so and she says that she called them and is still waiting. Finally, after a week or more we had to call back to find out that, "oh, I just got the paperwork back today." according to Kirsten. We then inquired when the cremation would take place not realizing until being told that moment our loved one will have to be transported again to a cremation facility! This ENTIRE process has been THE WORST! As I type this I STILL do not have the remains of my loved one 1/10/19. We have been given the runaround so much by the supposed funeral home to asking "who is..." when inquiring about our case. We would call and ask about the status and they would have no information, Kirsten wouldn't be available and wouldn't return our many messages lots of times. We have to consistently ask about the status and NOW whereabouts of our loved one. One family member received a call from AJ  about 6:30am, November 30, 2018 asking about picking up a deceased person which enraged my family  because he mentioned ANOTHER PERSON'S name! read more

This is the most incompetent business I have ever encountered. Look carefully on their website: you will not find any signs of accreditation, any full names, any hint as to their location. I foolishly hired them and paid a long, miserable penance for my rashness. I finally figured out what they are doing, so let me share. This company does not actually handle any aspect of cremation except getting customers. They contract with local funeral homes and crematories near the customer. That might be useful enough (if illegal) except that they don't reveal this fact and more importantly, their revolving-door staff have no knowledge about any of the actual arrangements. So if you have any questions, such as, "Where is my mother's wedding ring?" you will get nothing but a runaround. Oh, they will promise and promise to find out and call you, but you will wait until doomsday for an answer. They use a single email address for all communications; yes, I mean all staff members share a single email address; so of course, no one is responsible for answering those emails. You may have urgent special instructions that you tell Tracey, but alas, the next day Tracey is gone and you're dealing with Tiffany, who vows to find out about the ring; but the next day, Tiffany is "out with a family" and you're talking to Jamie. It goes without saying that your price will just happen to be at the highest end of their price range, and that you will actually pay hundreds of dollars more due to non-optional add-ons like a container for the ashes. I am not exaggerating one iota. If this had not been a time of loss, I would have thought I was involved with a cheap circus. Truly, the name should be "Three-Ring Cremation Contractors" or "AJ's Slow and Dirty Con-jobs and Cremations." I am very disappointed in their service. The price was almost double the lowest price they advertised but was still comparable to other crematoriums. I asked about death certificates and identifying the body and they said there were additional charges for those. I appeared there were additional charges for anything they did. After agreeing to do the cremation, a day later after I filled out all the forms and got them everything they need they call me and told me they couldn't do it and to get another company. It's bad enough to lose your mother but really depressing to have them run me through all the process and them tell me they were too busy. read more

I also wish I had Yelped this place before using. My distant uncle died and my mother was informed she was liable to take care of his remains. I sent paperwork over and kept waiting and checking with them to see if everything was on track. After waiting 3 days and being assured things were progressing as usual during that time, I was told they couldn't find my paperwork. Then they wouldn't take my power of attorney for my 93-year old mother and wanted a doctor's note to say she was too feeble to sign anything. Why would I have her power of attorney if she was able to handle her affairs??!! Gads, it was like taking to a child!! Needless to say, I took my business elsewhere. read more

Fraud. We tried to use these guys, who referred us off to a non-existing service, who contacted us after a two day wait to tell us that they could not conduct cremations. Stay away from these folks. read more
