Most of the graves here are after the year 2000 and most of them have the name McShan. Several of the headstones actually have photographs of the decedents posted on them. It's quite clear that the McShann family was of African descent. There are still a few graves that have no headstones, only the funeral home plaque. There is still room for about another hundred graves.

It sits next to Elgin Elementary school and across from Elgin intermediate school. Behind the cemetery is a small park with a pond. There are many graves from the 1800s, but this is still an active graveyard with some fresh additions. If you're looking for a particular grave, they do have a records building, but you will have to call the number pictured below to make an appointment. The cemetery has three entrances which allow for cars to drive in on the gravel roads. I was surprised not to find a Texas historical sign, only a marker. This cemetery is very large and it appears every single person who has ever lived in Giddings is interred here. There are literally thousands of graves that are meticulously well ordered and arranged in family plots. On the property, you'll find an open covered memorial area along with an enclosed mausoleum. Most of the names found on the headstones are of German and European origin. There were quite a number of recent interments towards the rear of the cemetery where there is still some open space. Many of the graves are well visited due to the plastic flowers and trinkets. For more information concerning who's buried where, there is a cemetery office located at the back of the property. Considering the size of this cemetery, I was surprised I could not find a Texas historical sign when I walked the property. One of the nicer well cared for cemeteries that I've seen. I almost gave up looking for this cemetery because of its remote location. Google maps has it at…read moreone location when in reality it's almost a quarter of a mile away. It's very close to Highway 20 and Shiloh Road, which is just on the outskirts of Bastrop, Texas. In order to find it, you'll have to turn into a school parking lot and then very quickly veer left onto a single lane dirt road and follow it about 1000 feet until you arrive. This is still very much an active cemetery for the local residents. It sits on about 3 to 5 acres and still has additional room in case you're interested. After scanning many of the headstones, it is primarily an African-American cemetery judging by the headstones and porcelain portraits affixed to those markers. It has a single gravel road that dead ends at the back of the cemetery. There's a lot of randomness as to how the graves are arranged with lots of flowers left by loved ones. I did not spot any headstones from the 1800s, the vast majority are from the latter part of the 20th century and on. There were a few service members buried here and most of the graves have granite headstones, but some are in the cheaper cast concrete. It's a quiet place, but you can still hear the traffic on Highway 20 not far away.

This is a small cemetery directly on Highway 71 W. at Buck Lane and it sits just out of view. There…read moreis no sign or driveway to let you know where it is. It is tucked behind some trees 20 feet from the highway, but not enclosed by a fence. You'll have to park on the Buck Ln somewhere and walk a few hundred feet along the highway to gain access. I was surprised that it was not completely swallowed up by vegetation and in fact has been reasonably cared for over time, perhaps by the road crews. It is a small cemetery dedicated to the Fowler family. Out of the 12 gravesites here, sadly eight of them belong to children two years old and less. Judging by the prominence of the markers, it's likely this was a local family that was probably wealthier than most. As to the significance of the family name, I'll leave that up to someone else to investigate. The photos included in this review add more insight.

This is a small cemetery that sits on less than an acre on Caldwell Lane just behind a mobile home…read morepark. This is still an active cemetery with just a handful of graves on it with much more room for future residents. There is an access point on Caldwell Lane, but unfortunately it looks like someone just drove right through the gate destroying it. There is no sign denoting the name of the cemetery but there is another cemetery nearby called Comanche Cemetery North. Considering its location I was surprised to see that the grass was well mowed and the graves were well tended. However being such a small cemetery there is no road of any sort leading into it so you'll just have to park just past the gate. The primary name that I could find here was Haws and in the corner of the cemetery is a large oak tree that obscures some fallen older gravestones. I did not spot any historical names here, unlike the nearby Hainy Church cemetery. It should be pointed out that just a couple hundred feet south of the cemetery lie additional headstones in a field along Caldwell. However, they are not as easily seen because this field is overgrown with weeds and the graves don't appear to be cared for. There's not a whole lot to see at this site, but there's room enough to make it your forever home.

One other thing you notice is that almost every grave is adorned with flowers and personal trinkets. This is still an active cemetery with many recent interments with plenty of room left. Quite a number of the headstones have porcelain photographs of the decedents. The majority of the headstones appear to be Hispanic in origin. I did not spot any headstones that went back before 1930. There is no Texas historical sign or informational kiosk at this location. Should you decide to make this your forever home, the photos included might help with your choice.

Most of the men worked as Texas Rangers during the wild frontier days. I was mainly looking for Rogers Hornsby, the baseball legend, but there are generations of the family buried here. Maybe do a little Genealogy research before if you want to know "who's who".

I was actually surprised to see a large well-manicured cemetery located almost a quater of a mile…read moredown a difficult to drive gravel road just off of Webberville Rd (aka FM-969). I don't recommend driving a small compact car down this single lane rough road because of the unevenness of it. The cemetery has a hundred or more graves, many of which are of the name Hornsby. Two things I noticed, there were quite a number of graves that had the "daughters of the republic" seal on them. The other thing I observed was that there were quite a number of Texas Rangers crosses as well. The cemetery is filled with some figures of local Texas history. And like a lot of graveyards from the 1800s, sadly quite a number of those graves are infants and children. I did find two large stone historical markers, but not a Texas historical sign. There's a sign on the entry gate where you can email questions to. Immediately next-door to the cemetery there's another cemetery called Cementario Mexicano. So if you're looking for a really nice cemetery to visit, I would recommend this place, but be sure to drive an off road vehicle or pick up to get there. The photos below help with the history.
