Alum Rock Self Storage was great before they were bought out by SmartStop Storage. Read the WHOLE story. And don't rent a unit from here. EVER. If I could give a minus zero star, I would. This company bought Alum Rock Storage in December of 2024, but never sent out notices of the buyout, or bills to everyone with a storage unit. My wife was wondering why the bill didn't come for January, and called and emailed Alum Rock Storage. No one responded. She also went down to the office to see if she could talk to someone working there, but the office was under construction and no one was there. So in April, she gets a bill from SmartStop Storage, saying she owes money for the last 4 month's. No introduction. No apology. Just a HUGE bill for 4 months. So she calls and disputes the charges, saying she was never notified of the change of ownership, and she had tried to send a check for January, but it was sent back by the post office. After tons of going back and forth with SmartStop, she finally pays the bill and she thought everything was find. But no. She gets a bill for a late payment for May, even though she paid everything over the phone. She had receipts of her payments and sent them to their headquarters. SmartStop was just trying to get over on her. We decided to move our stuff out of this horribly owned company. They had DOUBLED the cost per month, without upgrading anything in the facility. So I went there on my lunch break to open the unit, after all the bills were paid, and there was another lock on the unit. So she had to call again and get that removed, and I wasted my time going over there. So that weekend (Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend), I rented a U-Haul and we drove 40 miles from where we live to get our stuff out of the storage unit. I pull up in a U-Haul truck, and some lady that works there runs out and says I can't pull my vehicle inside. They decided to paint all the outside units that day. So they only way we were able to get out stuff out is to roll a cart an 1/8th mile in and an 1/8th mile out, at least 6 times with two carts to get our stuff out of the unit. It was almost like they did this on purpose because they knew so many customers were moving their stuff out. We were not the only ones moving out of this HORRIBLY run storage place. At least 6 families were moving there stuff out at the same time. And ALL of them were as ANGRY as we were. If you need a storage place, look elsewhere. This is the WORST managed and ran company we have ever had to do business with. read more

A couple weeks ago my mom had paid for her storage for a whole month, she goes up to her unit and she notices her original lock was removed and a circular lock was put on her storage with a sticker from the logo of the new owner, my mom then goes and asks what was going and who changed her lock the owner was very rude and told my mom that she must've gave access to someone but no! Me and my mom are the only people who have access to the storage, my mom then got someone to remove the lock that wasn't hers and come to find out all of her work equipment was GONE. We asked the manager if we could look at the cameras because someone stole from us and she said it wasn't her problem and that it's not her responsibility? There's literally holes in every unit door? Why maybe because they got stolen from too! I recommend moving out fast! Place went downhill with new owners. read more

Alum Rock Self Storage - Alum Rock Hertz rental! - Self Storage Near Me - San Jose, California

I've been with Alum Rock Self Storage since 12/5/2020. I was locked out of my home and lived in a hotel until 6/24/2022 when we finally got an apartment. I noticed we would only get late payment invoices I questioned my boyfriend looked up the contract and it stated payment due ion the first and so forth. I phoned the company questioning why we are only getting invoiced for being late where was the original invoice. The late invoice was mailed out that day received from USPS the next day. To find out they do not send out the original payment invoice. I then told Connie well you are the only company who doesn't yet you make sure the late payment is sent out. Life is very stressful and to find out for 2 years we've been paying not only the original payment of 259.00 for a 10x10 unit but also any where from 60.00-200.00 in late fees. On the contract it also states you can change your payment due date yet it is due on the first of the following month. Well if your requesting to change your due date its based on when you get paid so why would it go back to the first the following month? I just do not advice using this business if you do I hope you have all the time to watch your statements make sure they are accurate and they're not scamming you. read more

I had no problems with having my "entire household" furniture and items stored here for the last 4 months during the summer. They prorate your first month but don't prorate when you move your stuff out, FYI. I always came in person or called the office to pay for my storage unit and never had any issues. Everyone was always very nice and the facility seemed very clean. It's a little pricey, but I felt like my stuff was secure. They allow you to pay for the month and give you 10 days grace period before they charge a late fee, which helped. I would have given 5 stars if the prices were a little more affordable, but rent is on the rise, everywhere right?!!!!!! read more

Oh my storage you have been so good for so long! Everyone I have ever met or gotten help from in the office has been more than nice. Last move I rented trucks from them with no problems. This time my husband wanted to try budget down the street which is $10.00 cheaper a day, but higher price for mileage, and both times we went to pick up the truck,at budget, they were closed. AR storage has someone in the office every day. After two years I still had my contract, but forgot my code. The counter person was nice and pointed out my code IS on my contract. I couldn't find my key, at first, either, and she told me that they would help me remove my lock if needed. My space was awesome and convenient. I wanted a ground level near the front. I waited and got exactly what I needed. I rate only 4 stars, only because I find the yard kind of hard to get in and out of, and the staff park behind my unit, in the narrow drive, which makes me have to really be careful, which can be hard when you are fully loaded. When I opened my unit after TWO YEARS all was as I left it, just some dirt under the door, but secure and dry. It was a long haul till we could find a home, and if I had known it would be two whole years, I think I could have skipped the bills. But it's almost over now, and AR storage was really the least of my worries, which is what you want from self storage. read more

SKIP THIS PLACE. We rented a 16ft Penske moving truck here. Everything with the reservation and check-out went well, except when we started driving the truck home, we noticed a large crack on the windshield. We had missed the crack during inspection because they washed the windshield AFTER we signed the inspection papers.. We called to inform them about the crack and requested a truck exchange. They agreed to it then hung up. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! When we arrived back, the man who had previously helped us was skeptical about the windshield crack and we sensed he was blaming us for it, even though we had literally only been driving the truck for 10 minutes! Needless to say, he didn't give us good customer service and handed us the inspection clip board to do the inspection ourselves. We finalized the exchange and got another truck WITHOUT a windshield crack. But I will never come back to this place. Not to rent a moving truck, not to rent a storage unit, not for anything. We are so tired from packing and getting ready to move, the least you guys can do is have good customer service because it's in your job description!! read more

Absolutely the nicest, most understanding people! I arrived at a different storage location to move my things in at 6:05 PM when the office closed at 6, and they would not let me in or accommodate even though they knew I was coming! I started to panic because most places in the area close at 6 PM and I had a flight the next morning at 8 AM, before they reopen. In my panic, I finally called Alum Rock, who was open until 7 PM. They didn't have the exact space I needed, but gave me a discount on the larger space to make it more similar to what I was expecting to pay. They helped get me set up and moved in and were so understanding about the entire ordeal (I was really shaken up and not at my best when meeting them). Alum Rock Self Storage has been a real life saver. I have rented numerous units over the past year. On several occasions the need was immediate and they came through. We are moving and Connie has been a tremendous help. We rented a truck and she made sure to check all available discounts and saved us compared to other rental operations. Like any storage facility it is vital to have secure locks. We purchased several from Connie at discount since we were renting two units. Highly recommended. read more

beware!! your stuff will get stolen in their storage units!! i've had my belongings here for less than 7 months & my storage got broken in to. this place is not safe nor secure. i do not recommend this place unless you want your stuff stolen!! they're also highly rude & unprofessional. they have no security cameras to protect you. if negative stars were an option, i'd mark 1,ooo, ooo negative stars for service & quality. read more

Be very careful if you do business with these people, they will scam you if they get a chance. I reserved a Hertz rental car on Expedia, so my price was set. I declined insurance, since my Farmers Insurance covers me when I rent (which I do a lot.) I showed my Expedia rental agreement when I picked-up the car and pointed out that I did not need insurance. The lady at the desk printed my Hertz documents and handed them to her assistant (she did not review them with me). What I did not know was that she had added insurance to my rental after I told her not to. I did not see the extra charges until I returned the car and found out that the bill was like $130 more than it should have been. The guy at the desk refused to talk to me about it, and refused to call hertz (he basically told me F-Off). I immediately called Hertz Corporate and they made the deduction, but scolded me for the error. If you do any business with Alum Rock Self Storage be very aware that they are crooks. read more
