I was shaking as I drove home. First, I come to the ghetto, disgusting, parking lot where a Planned Parenthood is. Then I wait for what I hope was the perfect time to get a competent barber, even if they were a student - around 9:30am. I walked in, nobody was at the desk. I signed in, then sat down. Finally a young man came up to the desk, I asked for a cut, and handed him a $10 bill. "It's 15 now," he said. Great, Riggins went up on the price again. The guy had a look on his face like he would not let me slide with $10 today for a last time. So, I had to go back to my car to get more money. Mind you, this is the ghetto - where black males are seen as less than human. It felt like walking through a battlefield just to grab $5. I walked back to the circus. The desk was empty, the young man was meditating or something outside. So, I sat and waited. I almost turned to the black man sitting next to me and said, "I bet if I was white - they would look at me." Finally, this black guy who I will call, "militant-uncletom instructor," comes over, but he does not look at me. Instead, militant-uncletom instructor talks to a few students. Then, militant-uncletom instructor finally talks to me. The first thing I did was put the $15 in his hand. Because, as a black male - I understand the negative stereotypes that follow me and I don't want to embarrass my race. I was assigned a woman, she was white or white-Hispanic. I did not mind that she was a woman. Although, I was horrified by her lack of skills. This woman, did not know what she was doing. She was so scared. She started cutting my hair, then after a few minutes she says, "It's been two minutes and I didn't introduce myself." Just because you lack skills, that doesn't mean you also have to be a coward. The woman kept having to call militant-uncletom instructor over for help. Of course my race had to be mentioned by militant-uncletom instructor. The woman kept sweeping hair into my face, so she asked militant-uncletom instructor to come over. Militant-uncletom instructor said, "He's black, he's used to it." I did not say anything right there - because, I am not going to say anything upsetting to a man who is holding clippers next to my head. That is not the mentality students should be taught - "it's okay to treat this customer differently because they're black." The woman gave me a hack-job in about 15 minutes. I can never attract women with the haircuts I get at this dump, so I was not going to argue and cause a scene. I thanked the woman who gave me the hack-job, then I walked out of that circus for the last time. It's sad, because I had been coming since the place first opened.
