had an experience at Staples today that was disappointing enough that I feel it's worth sharing…read more I went in because I saw that they had laptops on sale. I spent about 15 minutes looking through the laptop section, reading the specifications and comparing my options. I even discussed with my husband which one I was interested in purchasing. During that time, there was an employee nearby who appeared to be aware that I was looking at the laptops, but no one offered to assist me. Eventually, I had to leave the area, get in the customer service line, and ask if someone could help me with the laptops. Ironically, the employee who had been nearby watching me came over to assist. Unfortunately, the interaction only became more frustrating from there. His manner throughout the transaction felt very condescending. At one point, while I was on my phone transferring money to make the purchase, he told me he would help me after I got off my phone. He also spoke to me in a way that gave me the impression he assumed I didn't know much about computers or even how to add an app to my phone. I understand that people make assumptions based on appearances, and perhaps I didn't look like someone who was there to purchase a laptop. I'd been unpacking and moving all day, so I certainly wasn't dressed up or looking my best. But I came into the store prepared to make a purchase, knew what I was looking for, and ultimately did exactly that. I went ahead with the purchase because I wanted the laptop, but I left feeling as though I had been judged and talked down to throughout the experience. I can't help but wonder whether I would have been treated the same way if I had been a man--or perhaps a younger customer. I'm not writing this because I expect special treatment. I simply expect the same level of courtesy and respect that any customer deserves, regardless of how they look, their age, or what an employee assumes about their ability to afford or use a product. Staples has some good products and good prices, but customer service matters too. I hope this experience is taken seriously and that employees are reminded not to make assumptions about the customers standing in front of them.
