I was declined by Hagerty and Grundy due to my driving history - in the past 3 years I had a not at-fault, comprehensive, and an at-fault. I called American Collectors and spoke to a very friendly underwriter, David Barris. He was really helpful (though for some reason their system wasn't working and he could not see my driving history). I have Geico right now for my daily driver and kept calling (3 times) to have my driving history sent and they kept not sending it. I explained my failed efforts and he said he would try to give them a call himself. It must have worked because I am insured now. I needed insurance in a couple days and they were able to get it to me very quickly and without too much trouble. I was very happy with the representative I spoke to - he really stood out from the other collector car insurance representatives I spoke with (Hagerty, Grundy, and JC Taylor). So far, so good. The company used to be great. Personal service, responsive, friendly. They are under new ownership, and they have lost their way, in my opinion. After 28 years with them, I filed my FIRST claim yesterday for a windshield chip repair. A very inexpensive claim, but what they want to put me through to cover this chip repair is ridiculous. After filing my claim online, I wait and wait to hear what is supposed to happen next. Today, I get a text from someone at "American Modern." Never heard of them, but apparently that's my insurance company. Instead of telling me what the process is, they start by demanding proof that I'm eligible for the repair. They want photos of my car, the windshield, the VIN and the odometer. They want to know what the purpose of my drive was when the chip happened? They want information on whatever vehicle kicked up the rock. They want to know what my daily driver is, including year, make and model. Etc, etc. I can't even begin to imagine what I'd need to provide if I was in a collision. Time to find a new insurance company. I can no longer recommend them. read more

Complete waste of time. Online quote form states minimum vehicle value is $3,500 and driveway storage is an option. I receive a quote, then an email asking for photos of my vehicle. The next day I get a phone call stating that because my vehicle is valued at less than $10,000 and stored outside it would not be covered. I had insurance on my classic cars with them for almost five years, no problems, never had to make a claim. In late 2025, they sent a list of demands in order to continue my policy. Some were reasonable, like wanting to see a photo of the car. Others were (in my opinion) unreasonable: they wanted a copy of my insurance policy for my regular, non-classic cars, and they were mandating I install a car alarm. I refused the first as it is none of their business who I do business with for something they don't insure. I refused the second as its not their place to tell me I have to install an aftermarket piece of equipment on my property. When I communicated this to them it took a considerable time to hear back, only to have them repeat their demands and threaten to cancel my policy. I was surprised to receive an expiration notice on my account today from ACI. The expiration date of my policy was 30 June 2025. As it turns out, my bank showed me that my payment was processed by ACI on 25 June. For the record, I've been an on-time customer for 7 years and I haven't had any real problems with ACI until now. What bothers me, is ACI takes at least a week to process payments but spits out expiration notices on the button. This may seem like small beans to some --but I take pride in paying my bills on time. I applied online for coverage of 2 classic/modified vehicles of mine. I received a call from Vicki asking for further details of the vehicles, she said yes American Collectors do cover the make/model and a 3 sided carport with a locked door is acceptable means of storage. While on the phone with her she looked at a Google street view of my property from more than a year old and under a bit of construction at the time. She then started making judgments and remarks based on the google street view of my property without stating directly that she looking at the google street view. I was then asked for photographic proof of the vehicle's being stored in a 3 sided carports with a locked door and additional photos/documents as needed. After I submitted everything to her, I got a voicemail the next day stating that "they don't cover vehicles in a carport, my vehicles are marginal vehicles and I should stay with my current insurance company" (not sure what my current insurance company has to do with anything or why she's bringing it up!). I called her back to ask why ask for all the information photos/drivers license/address/phone if you didn't cover the the vehicles and in a carport in the first place? I even call asked to speak with a manager/supervisor, no one returned my call. ‍ I'm glad I didn't get coverage from your company, judging by the way you handled this at the beginning, not going to be pleasant when a claim, help needed or something similar of that nature arises. Be careful if you plan on insuring a vehicle with this company. After reading the other reviews, it looks like I am not the only one upset with them. I had my 1996 F150 insured with them for four years (during which they gladly accepted my payments) until I got my notice that they were not going to renew my policy because my vehicle was no longer an antique/collector vehicle. I guess as the vehicle gets older it looses it's antique status. I don't know if their insurance is any good as I never had a claim but I would now be suspect. Just a warning. read more

I attempted to cover my antique three times with this company. The first two times I was blown off by both reps. The third was with Christina Osterhouse, who stated she would not do that to me. After getting a final price and asked to sign the policy I noticed there was something added to the policy about who could drive the car, without me being told that. I called her and left a message for her to call me. Guess what, she blew me off and never called back. I decided that I would just stick with my current insurer. I called to cancel one day later. I dealt with Daniel Irizarry who stated I would be charged for one day of coverage and would be sent a refund. He stated he would send me the exact amount of the refund. I have been with American Collectors Insurance for 15 years? My main insurance has been through USAA for 40 years. I haven't had a claim on any insurance other than a windshield for 30 years. American collectors insurance over the past few years has been horrible to insure vehicles with. The past two vehicles they have run me through the ringer like I was trying to commit insurance fraud. Asking for all sorts of different things questioning where it was being garged, etc. Low balling values on insurance value. I had another policy through haggerty, and I will be switching all my vehicles over to haggerty. As far as I'm concerned American collectors insurance can go away. I will also let USAA know how their partner ensure has become so difficult to deal with. Just look at their rating, and all the negative post. And move on to another collector car insurer. read more

Had classic car insurance through this company. I paid the whole year for the first year. The second year made a payment and they ended up rejecting my payment two weeks later and they did not notify me. Three months later I get a letter from the DMV stating that they will cancel my registration on my car because I don't have insurance on it. I called American collectors and asked why my account was currently in cancellation mode and they stated because there was no payment. I told him there was a payment but it was rejected for some reason and I was never notified. They said if I need to get insurance I'd have to go through a quote all over again with them. When I called to pay for a new policy the rep said that my vehicles did qualify. One didn't qualify because it was a 2009 Cadillac and too new. Do not trust your antique cars with them. After renewing the insurance the company send me different emails regarding photos I had to submit and all the paperwork again. I complied and sent to my agent Thomas B. My agent was not very responsive from the start but I finally got an email renewal and I thought everything was fine. On December 31st I received a cancellation notice. I emailed and called my agent Thomas B. but he never called me back. Finally, I reached a manager that informed me that they changed the parameters of my insurance and I could no longer insure 1 of my 3 cars with them (btw they cancelled ALL of my policies). BUT, she also clarify saying that my insurance was ACTIVE until the end of my policy year. I raised question about coverage if something happens in between and the manager would NOT give me a straight answer. I knew at that point the answer was ... we are not going to pay because of this technicality ... very dishonest !!! Stay far away Went back to Hagerty instead. read more

After having been insured with them for a couple years, I went out of country and my debit card was hacked, which caused my payments to stop. Once I realized it was canceled I called to get it back on and after jumping through hoops they denied my insurance due to "mud being on the vehicle" now this is a 1989 HMMWV or Hummer H1 for people not familiar, which is stored at a farm off a dirt road. So yes there will be some mud on it from doing so. I didn't know having a dirty vehicle constituted a denial in coverage. Would not recommend this company to anybody read more

They failed to notify me of my policy expiring then reported me for the lapse. Upon receiving notice from my state for the lapse, I contacted them to reinstate my policy but was ignored. A simple phone call or email would have fixed the situation but I guess that's too difficult for their lazy and unprofessional staff. To whom it may concern, I have left 4 messages with Jose concerning my 1963 Chevrolet Impala and he hasn't even bothered to call us back. It has been at the body shop since August 20, 2020. I'm a 31 year combat wounded Marine and disabled vet. The only thing I look forward to is cruising my impala with our car club who are also service members and combat vets. My fellow members of our car club and the Veteran of Foreign Wars the Southern Ca. Chapters are absolutely disgusted with the way American Collectors Insurance has treated us. A lot of our members have American Collectors Insurance and are now thinking about going to someone else for their classic cars. They supposedly sent their own mechanic to look at it and to put it on a lift. When the mechanic they sent went to see the car all he did is walked around it and left without saying anything. It sounds more to me that American Collectors Insurance is a racket and do not take care of there customers I was parked for a photo shoot and was hit while it was parked in front of a cement parking block. My car is customized with over a $100,000 dollars invested in it. We are now pursuing legal advice for a law suit against American Collectors Insurance for not fulfilling their obligation to take care of their customers. After having this insurance for six years and not having any accidents they dropped me. They said it's because they had a new underwriter and the new underwriter didn't want to insure me. Let me explain the situation. First I'm a 46 yr old with no kids and a passion for cars. I own 3 low mileage cars that I don't even drive. I have a 2012 Maserati granturismo, a 2005 mercedes amg and a 2005 Honda s2000. They are all garage kept. I hardly drive them. In 7 yrs I've put 9k miles on the Maserati. 7 yrs 20k miles on the Mercedes and 4 yrs 5k miles on the Honda. I actually walk to work from my house. Most people think I'm nuts but I love them and cherish them. The Honda and Maserati were under American collectors and the Mercedes (my daily which I actually don't drive) is under State Farm. They canceled me because they stated that the Mercedes wasn't reliable enough to be a daily and it's the same age as one of my collectors vehicles and older than the other. Firstly I keep my cars in immaculate condition. Secondly if I could I would try to insure all of them as collectors vehicles but one needed to be a "daily" so I chose the Mercedes. I just am pissed off and feel rejected. No accidents and still dropped. Paid the premiums in full and still dropped. Just be weary with this company. They can drop you anytime. read more

So far, I am very happy having insurance that allows you to drive the car a little bit, and still get full agreed-upon value at a great rate. I understand why they required covered vehicles to be garaged. I do wish they had a better online portal; as of this writing, there's no way to view your claims or policy details. I've only had to file one claim so far for a chipped windshield, and they handled it with a minimum of fuss. read more
