We initially found a golden retriever online from one of the services where you basically buy the dog in real time from hopefully current pictures and a couple of weeks later someone shows up at your home in a van and drops the dog off. After talking with our Vet, we decided to give up our $2000 deposit and go the more traditional route. The entire experience with Rooster Valley was exactly as our Vet suggested. We got to meet all the parents, both dogs and humans, and see where everything took place. Shellie's Family is friendly and welcoming and we got to do a meet and greet when the puppies were four weeks old. We later went back at the eight week mark, picked our little guy and left happy. Throughout the entire process, we were able to watch the puppies grow and play and thrive. Questions were answered quickly, and we felt like we were involved through the entire process. I would say commit early. We committed to the litter before our puppy was even conceived. Because of that we got the ever-coveted pick of the litter. They were all winners, but we felt like our Charlie was particularly cute from day one and had our eye on him so it would've been sad to lose him to another family. He came to us at 8 weeks already so confident and socialized. We have a 4 year old lab and he was totally comfortable with her and with our kids. He is so smart and sweet and a total love. The breeders were great the whole way through - willing to talk to us on the phone with any questions and he came home with a stuffed animal dog scented like his litter and with a hearbeat you could turn on - I feel like that really helped him adjust to sleeping alone in the crate. I have recommended Dr. Hagen to dozens of friends and coworkers during those years, but that is something I can't bring myself to do any longer. In my opinion, when Dr Frank's son joined the practice, the level of care declined and the prices soared. For years people would drive from as far away as Stockton and Turlock, to bring their pets there for the excellent care and reasonable prices. But now it's become all about profit without the care. Last fall I took a stray cat in to be fixed, and although their prices are higher than other clinics, they have been my vet for so long, I went ahead and scheduled the surgery. During the surgery the office did call to tell me that they would have to go in through the cats abdomen to remove a testicle that was undescended, but neglected to tell me this would triple the price and make it a nearly $300 stray spay. But I have the money and it needed to be done, so I paid the bill, knowing this would be the last time I came here, and vowing to find another vet. Then low and behold, after all that, imagine my surprise when 8 months later that same cat HAD ANOTHER BALL DROP?!! Yes, you did read that correctly, the cat has another testicle now in his ball sack!!! So after paying all that money, and putting my cat through the added risk of abdominal surgery, when the vet couldn't find the testicle, he just closed him back up and thought "who's gonna know"??? Anyone know a good lawyer? If this cat was a human that doctor would no longer have a practice! Old Dr. Hagen would NEVER have tolerated this kind of shoddy work! Shame on them!
