Midtown Global Market has been such a staple in my life. It does such a good job of having food options from so many cultures and parts of the world. The food is reasonably priced and the workers are all so kind and knowledgable. Beyond just food, there is a huge selection of art, groceries, clothing, and more. MGM has always felt like the ideal of what Minneapolis is and can be. I am sad to see a lot of booths closed right now. My heart aches for my neighbors and community. I hope (and know) that MGM can bounce back and continue to be a place of diverse community. Love MGM always.

The Minneapolis Art Institute is free. The Special exhibit is a special ticket that costs $$ unless you're a member. I went two days and I found free street parking not too far away. When I visited the Prairie Movement featuring Grant Wood and Frank Lolyd Wright I looked for Thomas Hart Benton... He was Missing in Action. MIA has several museum caliber pieces ( by Benton ), in storage. When I asked if they have any American Pop Art, the answer is Yes, but they were all MIA. In MIA's Not on View exhibit. When I asked about surrealism, they said if they have it, it's probably on the second floor. The Layout of MIA is by region and time period. The staff is very helpful at guiding me, but exact answers were challenging. Art is supposed to be for all. MIA has a massive collection, ten percent is on view at any given time. When you visit, you can type in the artist you are looking for on the website. Hopefully you'll be able to see what you seek.

There is free street parking within a reasonable walking distance from the mural for you to park, get out and take a closer look. The mural depicts a fox and a couple of fireflies in the woods. The fox and fireflies appear to have a green glow from the light given off by the fireflies. There are also some red and orange plants that can be seen in the mural's foreground that complement the animals and the mural's blue background very well. It is a very nice mural that has very detailed artwork. The fireflies and fox look real. I like this piece a lot. It is very eye catching and caught my attention from across the street. Anyway, as with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, such as the Prince Tribute Mural, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip.

Just outside the Walker Art Center, this Sculpture Garden is both a greenspace and a celebration of artistry. Some of the pieces are newer but a couple have been since the beginning like the Spoonbridge Cherry and the blue rooster. You scarcely notice the highway close by as you walk amongst rabbits and geese and robins and people walking their dogs. It's peaceful, and fun, and free (except for parking, which was $1). Well worth a visit!

As you walk into the park, a beautiful glass house greets you, then a small community house with different languages stenciled on catches your eye. Walking towards the pound where the spoon and cherry bridge is, you pass a beautiful circle installation. Then when you get to the main attraction, you realize how big spoon bridge is and how awesome it looks from every direction. It helps that the cathedrals are in the skyline behind the art installations too as it adds a beautiful juxtaposition of art with urban. The other sculptures just look cool like the blue rooster, the liberty-ish bell, the steam punk swing. It's all a great experience. I'm glad the garden is there, really well maintained and free.

Dropped in last night for their free Thursday evening admission. All I had to do was check-in at…read morethe front desk and receive a small medallion to wear. They even had a fun free craft going on in the basement, all supplies included and snacks! Yay! I just took an explore at my own pace through a couple of exhibits. The docents are a little creepy... I know they're just doing their job by standing there staring at you or following you around (probably because guests are bad at respecting the rules), but yeah, I found them a little distracting/detracting from the experience. Oh well. I just tried to ignore it and focus on the art as best I could. Moving from room to room and spiralling up gradual stairways will kind of get you lost inside the building. It's large and has multiple floors. The space will shift from cozy to grandiose at a moment's notice. If you don't like being lost, grab a map before you go in. If getting lost is a fun part of the experience for you, then by all means, just enjoy following your nose like I did, haha! I happened to be there on opening night for the new kid's exhibit they added, where you are encouraged to touch as part of exploration. It's not terribly large, but I like things that encourage imaginative play. Shame I saw one lady just staring at her cell phone like a drone while her kid played beside her. There are all-gender bathrooms on the ground floor by the lobby, and additional restrooms scattered throughout the center (when you stumble across them, lol). There are also coat closets for you to hang your coat if you don't need it; they keep the center nice and warm inside! There is an occasional water fountain as well, which is a godsend since they do not allow you to carry ANY drinks (even recloseable water bottles like Hydroflasks) into the exhibit spaces. There are also a couple of gift shops. The one in the lobby has affordable things, the one deeper in on the second floor is like modern art for your home + a wall of books. There are a couple of theatres inside, along with a full restaurant (y'know, if you have money for fancy-schmancy things like eating, oops). For parking you have a couple options: you can utilize the surface lot for $5 and it'll last you until midnight, or you can use the underground lot for $8. Depending on the weather conditions, that extra $3 might make it worth it to you to choose the underground space. On a chilly Thursday November evening, I still chose the outdoor lot and there were plenty of parking spaces available. There is also the option of squeezing into parallel parking along Vineland and using the meters. Obviously, the sculpture garden is also right next door to explore at any time of day for free. I highly recommend it, if only to take a quick selfie with the Cherry & Spoon or blue Cock.

It is so sad that it is no longer the vibrant area in Minneapolis and it was not so long ago it used to be the "It" place overflowing with retail, restaurants, clubs, theaters , art and greenery. So sad that there's been a gradual demise over the last few years... the final punch being COVID and the George Floyd Protests in 2020. Today, it feels like a ghost town.

Traffic around here along Lake Avenue can be really awful but at the same time there are some great businesses here, some great ethnic stuff and tons of hipsters and it's just a really lovely place to wander around and hang out - but watch out that you don't end up walking around here in Winter which lasts 512 months a year around here. Lovely girls working at the tanning salon. Great people at the lovely Vietnamese shop I tried. All kinds of other cool things to check out. There's also a really cool 24-hour diner in these parts. So girl, come here with me and we can be Uptown Girls together. When we know what we want with our time. When we wake up and make up our minds.

I stumbled upon the gallery earlier this week and was blown away by the unique collection of art they are curating from local and national artists. Of course some art was a bit out of my price range, but I was encouraged to see they also carry art that is very affordable and moderately sized for us apartment dwellers in the area. Everyone in the gallery was welcoming and very knowledgeable! I'll for sure be coming back here when I'm ready to make a few investments in great art. Lots of open gallery events - parties, really - that spill into the street in a joyful, hip ruckus. It's a non-profit which explains the periodic calls for membership. Seems like a good place to support if you believe in the arts, especially because they do interesting educational outreach. The little shop is consistently full of unusual, local things. Prints, jewelry, toys - I think I'd be happy to receive most any of it as a gift. Watch out for their annual Sashion Flow in September - a fun and festive fashion show.
