You had me at giant blue rooster. But this sculpture garden has more to offer. Currently a gaggle of geese are loitering near the spoon cherry. The interplay of space and monolithic sculptures is impressive. There were also many people out just enjoying the lawns, playing games, and enjoying froyo from a cart. The mix of serious and playful sculptures makes for an experience of art at once fun and whimsical and heavy, thoughtful, striking. I have never seen anything like this in California, or any other place that I've visited, to my recollection. It's worth a stop! The lot has a 5.00 flat rate, and there are also street parking meters too. There is a bridge over the freeway to/from Loring park, I think it's called. We did not go over there. Appreciated my friend and her husband spontaneously taking me here on our way home from dinner tonight. Just outside the Walker Art Center, this Sculpture Garden is both a greenspace and a celebration of artistry. Some of the pieces are newer but a couple have been since the beginning like the Spoonbridge Cherry and the blue rooster. You scarcely notice the highway close by as you walk amongst rabbits and geese and robins and people walking their dogs. It's peaceful, and fun, and free (except for parking, which was $1). To find a place like this across from a busy highway and near downtown Minneapolis is special. You see the images and think wow that's interesting, but once you're on premise and walking around the sculptures, it's a different experience. As you walk into the park, a beautiful glass house greets you, then a small community house with different languages stenciled on catches your eye. Walking towards the pound where the spoon and cherry bridge is, you pass a beautiful circle installation. Then when you get to the main attraction, you realize how big spoon bridge is and how awesome it looks from every direction. It helps that the cathedrals are in the skyline behind the art installations too as it adds a beautiful juxtaposition of art with urban. The other sculptures just look cool like the blue rooster, the liberty-ish bell, the steam punk swing. It's all a great experience. I'm glad the garden is there, really well maintained and free. read more

First off: we're not huge fans of modern art, but we went with an open mind and ready to be moved. There were a few pieces that were thought-provoking, but since there are few places to sit and contemplate each piece, those chances weren't as many as we anticipated. It was fun to show my kids "the cherry & the spoon" I remembered from my childhood. My kids did get bored after a while of all the walking. The park wasn't as well-kept as I expected, but that's not surprising I suppose given its location. Parking was easy (and free on the street since we went on a holiday). The garden boasts plenty of art sculptures throughout. It's a nice leisurely walk to different art pieces. The spoon and cherry highlight the park. Take the time to enjoy the atmosphere and sights. What a beautiful art walk! This was quite enjoyable to visit an hour before sunset on a weeknight evening. They do have disabled parking spots and a nice wide sidewalk that's flat for easy walking or wheelchair usage. There are multiple sculptures to visit, and the notorious spoon sculpture is rather close to the parking lot as is the giant rooster, and the Native American fountain. There is a pedestrian bridge over the main road. If they have bathrooms anywhere, I did not see them. The sculpture garden is well worth a visit. read more

Pretty cool place, it's in between DT & Uptown MPLS. I used to go here often in the warmer months to play PokémonGo & to get some steps in. There's come near sculptures & of course the infamous Spoonbridge and Cherry! There's a few interactive ones like a swing but most of them are just for viewing! To be safe don't touch or climb on them, they do have alarms will remind you over a loud speaker! Also will alert you if you are on the grounds after hours. They used to have free parking along the street between Walker Arts & the garden, now it's all metered & they do have a big pay lot. However if there's events they usually take place in that pay lot and you have to park in the Walker Ramp or you can try to find parking in the neighborhood up the hill towards uptown. Also Loring park is an option as well as it's connected via a sky-bridge. read more

Big spoon and cherry, blue rooster, and plaques of wisdom that we've long forgotten. Just some of the few things you'll see in Minneapolis's free sculpture garden. Families, friends, couples, and misfits alike can enjoy what the garden has to offer. The exhibits are thought provoking and Instagram worthy. Aside from the exhibits already mentioned, there was a swing platform where people can take photos and try not to fall off of which was fun. Across the street on the Walker Art Center side are a few more mini exhibits, but the real treat are the mansions up the hill which you can only wonder what the inhabitants of those mansions do for a living. When you're done looking around outside, visitors can visit the Walker Art Center across the street for a taste of modern art (still worth it even though you have to pay for it). So make a day out of it... or don't, but it's definitely a must-hit on a Minneapolis tourist list. read more

The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is a must do activity when you are in Minneapolis. This is a great chance to visit a nice outdoor space and see some great art at the same time. There is a parking lot right next to the garden with a reasonable charge of $4. The park is pretty big, so you can get in some good walking or running while you are visiting. My favorite pieces were the spoon and cheery, the bell with a bunny, and the LOVE sign. There is more room so I hope that they add a few more pieces of art. The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is a free, somewhat small, walkable park area that's across the street from the Walker Art Center, and it's open for visitors from 6am to midnight every day. I love the concept of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, but it feels like some updates to the space - or better maintenance/upkeep - are needed. I fully understand that there's an intention/claim that they work to restore native flowers and habitation by letting things grow, but the *look* of the park is that it's fairly overgrown and poorly maintained. Honestly, it just looks like a bit of a mess. It's entirely possible to allow for growth of the natural flowers and all that while also accounting for general maintenance of the space... and you have to be able to balance those things in order to really allow for a garden like this to be appealing while also aligning with intent. In addition to the look of overgrowth, it seems like the overall remodeling of the space hasn't been especially positive. After I visited, a friend of mine (who has been living in/around Minneapolis for YEARS), noted "You should have seen it years ago. It's changed and a lot of us don't like it." I can understand why... besides the remodeling essentially meaning minimal shade and full views of the highway, it sounds like the remodeled sculpture garden is just really bare. On top of that, the areas where you are able to walk are inconsistent - some are paved, some are gravel. Some of those unpaved areas have metal that can stick out (they were probably once covered by gravel, but the general lack of maintenance has meant it's likely they haven't received proper attention either). I guess I was just generally underwhelmed. Besides the Spoonbridge and Cherry, and then the blue rooster, there's not really much going on here that you'll remember after you leave. I LOVE museums, arboretums/gardens, public art, and all kinds of similar spaces... so I really wanted to love the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden too. I just don't think this garden is really all that appealing as it's currently organized or maintained. TL;DR. Glad I went once, but wouldn't feel the need to return unless there was some kind of larger design overhaul. If you're pressed for time? You can definitely skip this space. read more

Perfect way to end our day with cherry on top [Minneapolis MN] ... a trip to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. The park is located near the Walker Art Center free and open to the public from 6:00a to midnight 365 days a year. The Sculpture Garden is one of the crown jewels of the city so we had to see for ourselves. This art installation is huge! Unfortunately, it was starting to get dark around 8:30p and we were unable to see all the sculptures. The ones we saw, though, were cool especially that iconic spoon with cherry on top [Spoonbridge & Cherry], and the blue rooster [Hahn/Cock] and also the LOVE sculpture by Robert Indiana. I'm happy that I got to see a piece of the 11+ acres of sculptures and art pieces but I would love to see the rest of them so hope to get another glimpse on my next business trip back. If you know me, you know I'm a sucker for public art installations. They always bring me so much joy. So naturally during my last trip to Minnesota we just had to check out the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. STAR #1 - When LOCATION is everything, Minneapolis Sculpture Garden really nails it. In the heart of downtown Minneapolis, this artistic oasis gives you a great opportunity to take in the views of the city, while taking in all the epic art. STAR #2 - Holy awesome artwork! With more than 45 pieces, this art installation is MASSIVE. I love the way the pieces just flow across the landscape. STAR #3 - Many of the pieces are interactive! Whether it's standing on the swing of Arikidea, walking through Black Vessel for a Saint, or posing with Love; there's no shortage of art to immerse yourself in. STAR #4 - No matter the season, there's absolutely something to see here. While I visited during the early summer months, it's equally impressive in the depths of winter. STAR #5 - The art is just so FUN! My favorite pieces are definitely "Spoon Bridge and Cherry" and "Hahn (Cock)". I love the use of everyday things and changing their size, color, and composition to really make the viewer think about them. I can see why the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is such a must-see attraction. I'd gladly come back. read more

I needed to come here because I've been obsessed with Spoonbridge and Cherry for a long time. I even forced my school mates to make our final sugar piece project on it when I was in culinary school. So knowing I was finally in the same city, I HAD to come check it out, snow be d@mned. I was a liiiiiiiitle underwhelmed as I thought the piece was larger than it is. However, in person, it's just as lovely as I thought it would be. The whole sculpture garden is a vibe that I just love. There are plenty of thought provoking pieces and some of them are interactive. I loved the layout of all the pieces, including when you head toward the Walker Art Center. It was super easy to get to from our hotel even though the walk was a bit long. We saw plenty of street parking and a fairly large lot. Since this experience is free, I'd say it's a must do when you're in Minneapolis. read more

This place is simply amazing. This is a must see attraction in Minneapolis. It is an outdoor art gallery that is packed with wonderful and unique pieces. Some of the pieces are interactive such as the swing that visitors can get on. It is very popular with the Instagram crowd. There is also wind chimes. All-in all there are over 40 pieces housed there. I cannot stress enough, how nice most of the art in the Garden is. They could be featured in some high-end galleries if the artist choose to display them there. The Garden was opened in 1988 and is a partnership between the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board. It spans 11 acres, is free to visit and is open from 6 AM to midnight every day. The centerpiece of the garden is a sculpture of a cherry on a spoon sitting in a small lake. The cherry has water spouting out of its stem and the spoon has water falling from it. There are Adirondack chairs on the lawn surrounding the lake that visitors can sit, relax and enjoy the sculpture. You will find a shelter with picnic tables at the garden, a picturesque arched walkway and benches with some snazzy sayings on them. The Cowles Pavilion and Alene Grossman Memorial Arbor are located in the garden. The garden's art collection also includes a bridge that serves as it background. Yes, a bridge, the Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge. Parking here is somewhat simple. There is a metered parking lot right next to the park and there is also limited free street parking on the side of the park, just outside the lot, as well. This is a cool spot to just hang out, especially during a nice weather day. They host special events there including yoga on the lawn, Free First Saturday: Garden Party. I spent about an hour and a half there and could have easily spent more. I am glad that I was able to experience this Garden and highly recommend that you check it out as well. read more

This was a cute lil spot. We ended up going here because we wanted to take some pictures and it was free. It didn't disappoint us especially to be free. Each of the sculptures had a little plaque close to it so we could find out more information about the sculpture. For someone with minor mobility issues like me, there is a lot of seating around the garden so you can rest. There's cheap parking right across the street so it's easily accessible. We were there while they were installing something so that was interesting to watch too. It's not too big and you definitely can take cute pictures with your family. read more

This is one of those spots in Minnesota you have to visit at least once! The spoon and cherry are iconic to MN. It doesn't have a ton of shade, but it's a nice casual walk nearly any time of the year. The bridge connects the Sculpture Garden to Loring Park, which is convenient considering the major road it crosses. Both the garden and the bridge have accesible features. The outside of the garden is paved, which is helpful for those who need assistance walking. The bridge has a ramp, which is nice for the same reasons. A great place to spend a few hours exploring on a clear day. Large and imposing pieces of art are scattered across the garden, including up the hillside next to the Walker Art Center. I honestly preferred the more park-like setting from years ago with more trees and grass. I appreciate the desire to bring back more native plants but think they could have kept some of the trees that lined the garden before. I do love the changes they made to the hillside by the Walker though. This is a great spot for creative photos and discussions about sculptures and artists' intent. Be sure to climb up the path next to the Walker and head back to the room that's built into hillside. This is one of my favorite hidden spots. Lay on the bench and watch the clouds go by as you contemplate the questions of the universe. read more

A must-stop while you're in Minneapolis! I went on a day when the museum was closed, but you can still walk around the garden to take in all of the sculptures. There's a lot to check out, but I found you could see everything and take all the photos you want in about 45 minutes or so. Date of visit: 2/26/22 Minneapolis isn't known for its things to do in the colder months, but that's when we were there visiting a friend who decamped back to Minnesota a couple years earlier. This is one of his favorite spots and it was pretty cool, overall. Visiting in the winter, I do wish there were a few more actual paths to get closer to the art rather than tromping through the snow, and it didn't seem as though every piece had a good sign that detailed the composition of the item and/or the inspiration for it. Should I find myself back in the Mini Apple (no one actually says that, right?) in warmer weather, I wouldn't be opposed to checking it out again when I can linger a bit longer in the out of doors. read more
