When I was working on my MFA final show, I purchased frames from American Frame. Upon receiving them, I noticed the inner dimension was a bit too big but I was able to work with it to insure my show's completion. In January, 2023, I needed a pre-cut mat for a client's commission and was pleased that once again American Frame could help me out with a reasonable price and fast turn around. I was sadly mistaken. This company uses FedEx to deliver their product, but FedEx delivered my product to the wrong address. When I contacted American Frame's "customer service" they informed me that "You will need to call Fedex and open an investigation into the delivery. I do apologize for the inconvenience, unfortunately since we show it as delivered it is out of our hands." and "There is nothing additional on my end to do, we fulfilled the order. How is my home like a great museum? In many museums, you can see works of art that are worth less than the delicate, antique frames that surround them. Oddly, the same is true for many living rooms--you can pay a decent price for a print or photograph, and easily double the price for a frame. Case in point: IQ and I bought an antique travel poster for 80 bucks at the Alameda flea market. To frame it is going to cost me another 200 bucks if I take it to a shop. Framing *anything* is expensive as hell if you go to a shop. I hate paying more for the frame than for the piece. American Frame makes and sells a great selection of do-it-yourself framing kits in just about any style, color, and material you can imagine. You can go to their website, select a frame, select a matt, and choose several options among backing materials and glass or plexi coverings, and they will ship it all directly to you from their factory here in greater Toledo. Better yet, if you live in the area, you can just pick it up at their office. The website even allows you to upload a picture of the item you're framing so you can see how colors, widths, and mattes will look with your art. Frames come with all the hardware you need to put the frame together, and you can ask that they send wire for hanging as well. Tip--the foamcore backing and the plexi or glass covering will be most expensive to ship--the frame components themselves will ship relatively cheaply in a long box. Highly disappointed and really wanted to give AF 5 stars. Their products are beautiful and well crafted. That being said, their customer service department is lacking!!! I placed my order for 4 frames with two mats (Navy Blue Oversize and TV Grey) each, the four frames/mats are identical in color and style just different sizes. Due to a mat being out of order and they can only give me 3/4 TV Grey they changed my order and gave me a different color Grey Oversize. Then proceeded to tell me I ordered the wrong color. I move passed that and go ahead and reorder the mat with the color I want TV Grey on 4/19/21. I do not receive a confirmation or a delivery date. I reach out today 05/04/21 on expected date of delivery. I was informed the mat is on back order and will not come in until 5/14/21, once the order is processed they will send me an expected delivery date. Seems that the mat TV Grey was back ordered when I placed the first order and no communication was given. So I had to pay for another mat and shipping for an a mat that is not available (not mentioned on website that it is out of stock). I would not have known, that TV grey is on back ordered if I didn't reach out. Such a scam and a way to get more money out of your customers! read more

I ordered a print and frame. It did not turn out well. A staff member was gracious and asked that I return it in exchange for a credit. I did. A family death contributed to me not quickly ordering something new. When I did try to collect the credit, I got no response from the company despite forwarding the emails from the employee who acknowledged return receipt of the original work and promised the replacement. So, they now have the framed print I paid for and my money paying for it. If they don't want to honor a credit, they simply ignore you. It's been a miserable experience. read more

Do not order from here! This is one of the most frustrating places I've ever ordered from. I placed my order on Jan 6, and was told in my 1st email it would take 5-10 business days. Fine. I waited and send a 2nd email and they said one item was out of stock and they would refund me for that item and ship the rest. Very happy customer. My order was placed on 4/17 and promptly after placing the order I was sent an email to confirm all specs to ensure any and all changes could be made within a 2-hour window. I liked this very much and felt I had a valued connection to my order. I received my custom sized frames yesterday 4/25, not bad at all. I can honestly say that I couldn't be more pleased. They are perfect, assembled very easily, the assembly hardware is of great quality, and the packaging to ensure the safety of the delivery was top notch (Banding, strapping, thick cardboard and cardboard layers within, taping, styrofoam, etc.). Like any art lover, we had a couple of paintings from college days at an art school rough framed with lattice slats. Looking them over after 10+ years ... it was time for a real frame. Took dimensions to the frame shop and found that the frame we wanted would cost about $450.00 each and be ready in 6 to 7 weeks. We shopped around with similar results locally. Dumbfounded, I mentioned this to a couple artists who smiled understandably. One suggested an on line source American Frame. "On-line" ? Especially for pieces 28" x38" OK ...what can you lose ... get another quote. To our surprise ... the frames we wanted in the right material ... not quite the exact color ... could be had for less than half the local price and including shipping and arriving in about two weeks. I know, a place called "American Frame" obviously sells frames. However, I'm here to rave about their stellar printing services. You see, I was looking to get some prints made for a photography portfolio. I wanted some very heavy, high gamut paper, and American Frame has an excellent selection of paper types. Not only that, but they do custom print sizes, which you really can't get from other labs. You upload an image to their page, and it automatically tells you the best assumed size, but you can also choose other sizes down to the 1/16th of an inch and they will print/cut it to size. They provide icc profiles for their papers in case you'd like to recalibrate the images on your end, but if you don't (I didn't), you can select the free adjustment feature and they will automatically fine tune the image for you. I printed 15 images on cotton rag and they came to me in a huge protective package, individually wrapped in tissue and inspected. The colors were rich and each page was cut to size. I ordered from them a second time for an exhibition print and for a second portfolio, and each time the colors, paper quality, and turnaround were excellent. Not only that, but they are very responsive via social media/email. When I asked if there was a bulk upload feature, I was unfortunately told no, but they did get back to me promptly. I have ordered prints from a few big labs, but American Frame is far superior in quality. I think that for most things, Bay Photo or Adoramapix are excellent and affordable choices for prints. However, if I ever need a fine art print on high-grade paper, American Frame will be my go-to. Not only that, but they'll frame those prints for you if you want. I really love these guys. read more

You keep saying you'll DIY, but then you thought: - It's too expensive - I'll never be able to assemble the frame - I don't even like that band anymore (I can't help you with this one) That's the thing about framing, when you have a company like AmericanFrame.Com, it's not that hard! Their framing tutorials (called "framing basics") are the best thing on the internet, for realsies. They spell out every step from measuring your artwork, to ordering your frame, to the very last steps of the framing process. The site has this cool feature where you can upload a picture of your artwork and play around with different frames. You order the framer bars in pairs and each pair is about $8 to $20 depending on your size and style. Compare this to $150 frame job in a store! I have definitely used AmericanFrame.Com for those back burner scenarios of a concert poster collecting dust after being moved from apartment to apartment. However, the last three times I have used them have been framing emergencies. The artwork I need to frame is extremely heavy, oddly-shaped, and three-dimensional. Twice now I have had about one week to have the pieces ready for the gallery. Both times the frames were delivered within a few days of ordering even though they were custom cut to fit my super weird dimensions! When framing, I am usually in a studio and not near a computer so I can't follow the online tutorials, but luckily the paper instructions are incredibly clear with photos and text to guide along. Metal framer bars need to be assembled, but their wood frames come completely done! I recommend the "canvas floater frame" in black and the wood floater frames. AmericanFrame.Com is based in Ohio and they do all of the woodworking and metal-cutting there. Last year I had to call them in a panic before a gallery opening and they could not have been more helpful on the phone. I had to change my order from a 2-3 day delivery to an overnight and it was just done. I am so impressed with this company - the selection, the service, the product. This is an awful website with customer service who just hang up on you. Their website is broken and defunct and customer service doesn't care how much of a customer time it wastes due to it being broken and then they just hang up on you. Avoid this garbage place. I tried calling back and their phone number had me on hold for 3 minutes then just hung up again. I'm really bummed that I had to take two stars off, cuz I really like this place's selection and friendly employees. A week after ordering, I called just to check the status of the order, and they told me the frames I wanted were out of stock, and that I should have gotten a call or email about it ( I hadn't gotten either ). So I looked for different frames that I wanted, and asked if they could comp or reduce expedited shipping, seeing as how I was now in a time constraint because they hadn't let me know the items were out of stock, but they could not. And it just wasn't really worth the extra 50$ for expedited shipping, when I was ordering standard sizes I could get here in town fairly easily. So I had to cancel the order - if I use American Frame again, I'll be sure to call to make sure everything is in stock asap I guess. ^Update^ These guys are great. When I called about getting a rush order, they were able to get all 11 frames that I ordered to San Francisco within a few days ( Although rush shipping is a killer!). I was also relieved to find that every frame, mat, and plexiglass sheet had been cut perfectly, and arrived in great shape. Instead of having expensive custom framing done for my artwork, I was able to pay the same, or even less, than what I would expect a standard store bought size frame would cost. Horrible.... went to their website and walked though the process to get a frame and photo. After I was done I payed about 100 dollars. I only received the frame. When i called back a customer service agent said i wasn't the only one who's experienced the website showing a completed order preview with my photo and it not adding the photo. I build these things for a living so I know good design and confusing design. The agent said he's going to contact me in 3 days and he'll see what he can do. I called back in 3 days, got another agent and this one wasn't even trying to help or understand. She acted like it was my error and then walked me through getting the photo by it's self...I did that and they didn't have to size that the frame interface said would work the same size i got from them prior. I asked her can I return and she was like nope and that was it. So I have a 100 dollar frame, no photo and there is nothing I can do about it. Very horrible experience bad on all levels. read more

I ordered five frames from American Frame and they all arrived with the wrong dimensions. They proceeded to tell me that I had to pay 20% of the total cost and the shipping fees in order to return the item, when it was their mistake in the first place. Many, many good things to be said, but also some frustrations I've been going back and forth between a 3 and a 4, so peg it at 3.5 even though Yelp won't let me. I've had several orders from American Frame. I remember back when they would give free shipping for orders over $50, then it was $75. Now you have to keep your eyes open for a discount code. I do really like that they'll send free samples, you can also send them photos of items to be framed and they'll make suggestions. At this point I've probably framed 30-40 things with this outfit. I like that as I move around I can keep getting the same frames no matter where I am. My frustrations center around that they won't ship to military addresses. There is no easy way to do framing of multiple things in the same frame (more than one hole in the mat). And the process necessitates multiple back and forth's with the company. All that being said, I'll probably still keep using them. read more

I ordered two large frames from their site after going over every detail painfully to make sure I got it right (even cheap frames are expensive). When they arrived I was dismayed to find them a 1/4" too small (for standard 32x40 watercolor paper). When I called them up, I was told I hadn't accounted for the lip of the frame. This would be fine if the website mad ANY mention this. I followed the directions explicitly and even loaded the image up to see my supposed preview, and their was no cropping. The problem was that if you choose to have no mat, their automatic frame size software doesn't take into account the size of the lip of the frame. I asked to talk to a manager, whom I told that I had followed every direction, but was told that they would not replace or refund any of the cost of the plexi (the bulk of the cost as it was oversized and UV coated). I eventually was offered a 20% discount on a new frame, but considering the problem was on their end, I was pretty disgusted. It would be like ordering shoes online by entering in your foot size, have them send a shoe smaller than your foot, then being told I should have known that their software only calculates the width of the shoe material in if you order the free socks as well! Now I have two $100+$ frames that are too small for my paper. They are cheap and you get what you pay for. read more

I ordered 2 custom frames and mats from the company. Little did I know that "frame" literally just means the metal frame and doesn't include the glass or backing. When I called to voice my disappointment, the company refused to waive the shipping cost on the missing items and would rather have me return the product than keep my business now or in the future. Shipping on the first order was $13, shipping on the second order would have been $13, and had it all come in one order it would have been $17. This company is not concerned with keeping customers happy and should take note from other companies such as Nordstrom or Amazon. The product I ordered (several Neilsen frames) was delivered in three days, extremely well packaged, and with instructions for assembly. Best of all, the price for the good service and excellent product was very reasonable. I ordered a large, custom wood frame, acrylic glass and not only was the quality of the frame very high quality and exceeded the online image, but delivery was fast and the packing of the frame and acrylic glass was unbelievable. I have ordered frames by mail many time before and I have never seen the care and effort to make sure the frame and glass were delivered without damage. In my experience, the site promised more than it delivered. Its actually somewhat difficult to find all of correct sizes and materials that you need. When they shipped me all of my materials, they either forgot the acrylic or I didn't see it because it looked like cardboard. Literally, without a doubt, the best framing source on the planet. A year ago I discovered American Frame's website, and placed an order for an odd-sized, odd-colored frame - something the local shops wanted a few hundred dollars for. American Frame had the right color frame, the right color matte, and I was able to piece it all together on their website so I knew exactly what I was buying. Then to my delight it was delivered less than a week later. I've since returned to their company to make purchases 5 times. As a hobbyist photographer, I enjoy printing my favorite shots in a 10"x15" size to maintain the original aspect ratio. I had a quote drawn up locally for a low-end frame and single white matte, and the price came back at $160 a frame! I'd go broke framing my small collection. American Frame does the same set-up, including shipping, for under $45 a piece.
