Some years ago, I made perhaps the biggest mistake ever. I contacted AHS and Herp Penrod to provide a price for the repair and replacement of some wood gates at my home. An individual calling himself 'Carmen' came out, looked over the job, and sent out a price sheet; no contract was ever offered. My wife and I agreed and sent the entire asking price to Mr. Penrod to start the job ASAP. My wife and I are both over eighty, and we're considered old school, as Carmen pointed out the two times he spoke to us. The 'old school' was his answer to not replacing the gate handle, the house numbers, the gate spring he tore off, the flag holders on the fascia board and the discarded wood he threw over the wall. He and Mr. Penrod basically approached the job as a paid-for project that was finished. Tongue-and-groove slats were replaced with the cheapest knot-filled, and now, unrequested, spaced wood. The screw heads ranged from Phillips-head to power-tool-only acceptable. To no avail, I contacted the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, the Atty. General's office, the Tucson Better Business Bureau, they had given AHS the A+ rating I relied on, and influenced our decision, and Pima County Age Council. Their response was, "What do you want us to do?" The Tucson BBB replied that they didn't write the reviews, and the Registrar of Contractors was relieved after two appointments, both canceled, didn't address a resolution. The nearly $4,000 job was approached with a hostile age basis attitude of contempt and scorn. The check was cashed so we can do as we wish, and they did. My email request the day after the job was considered done by AHS, and only AHS, as no walk-through was offered or ever took place, to meet with Mr. Penrod and Carmen at my home was less than a five-minute conversation. It seemed it was more a pretext to appease the state's requirement. It ended with Mr. Penrod shouting across my drive, in front of my home, that he considered my email request "a much of bullshit". He later called me from what I believed was his Cell Phone, as it didn't come in clearly and I could not understand him. It was the last attempt either of us made to contact the other. The Tucson BBB continues to have an A+ rating for AHS; Angie's List, on which AHS is considered a vetted and worthy contractor, said "sorry" and was never heard from again. There is much, much more, but as I will soon turn 86, I don't have the time or energy to deal with this 'elder abuse'. read more

The worker was rushed to leave since his boss called him for probably another job. Couple things to mention. 1) the gravels at two sections I asked him to removed were left undone. 2) Few leaking resulted from the new irrigation replaced. I believe the first handyman skill should be is drywall repair. This is one skill set I am not good at and I thought calling a handyman service could repair 2 ceiling holes (4 x 4) and a drywall seam that was showing were fairly simple. Patch and texture. First, he talked way too much......1/2 the repair bill was him talking and doing no repair. Then he charged me $24.60 for materials and $177.00 for labor. WTF... 2 pieces of 1 x 1 drywall and joint compound. OK... I can kind of get over that. The repairs looked OK because the joint compound and texture was still wet, but the next morning when everything was dry...it was awful. One repair, the repair had a big crack and also you could see the seams and screw holes because he used a piece of drywall that was "thinner" than the original and filled it in with joint compound. This is what he told me. The second repair you, could see the seams and screw holes. I think he used the right "thickness" of drywall, but not really sure. The "handyman's" skill for medium knockdown texture sucks. He could not remotely get close to the basic "knockdown" texture. He used a sponge???...No one with basic drywall skills uses a sponge for medium knockdown texture. I did call and and email about the crappy repair. The same tech came out and tried to repair and retexture the previous repair. It's OK, but still not what I CONSIDER A GOOD DRYWALL REPAIR. Eventually, I went over all the second visit repairs and re-applied joint compound, resanded and retextured everything the "handyman" was supposed to do originally. For $201.64, I could have done a better job repairing 2 ceiling holes and a wall seam. I am sure they are a good handyman service company, but they are as good as the employees they hire. I will also be emailing the owner of this company a more detailed description of what transpired when the "handyman" visited my house. Next time, I will hire a drywall guy that hangs, tapes and textures sheetrock. It will avoid the frustration. Overall, not very happy. read more

Absolutely worthless. Contract breaker. Plumber incompetent. Never had a leak until after the plumber visited. 'Owner' denied that I called about a bathroom problem at all. Yet he installed the lavatory on his first visit.The timing of one of the posts leaves me even more suspcious of this company. Non professional. Not to be trusted. Rude! I'm leaving out details of a phone conversation which should have resulted in a positive resolution. But whoever handled my call pretended to be confused so that the call ended. Hmmn! The plumber who came to my home is a 'golden year' individual named Mike. I called AH on 01/11 or 01/12 to have the plumber return to correct his error. He was here for les than 10 minutes. Now that the "Golden Years" are here... American Handyman is my choice to fix all the problems that arise in my house. Today he rebuilt all the parts in our bathtub/shower. The tub drain plug was fixed, the spout diverter valve, moen cartridge replaced, shower hose and a shower grab bar installed. The bath sink pull up stopper lever and stopper replaced. My water heater got drained after 2 years and had lots of white calcium in the tank. Also found my water ball valve is broke and is scheduled for repair. Thank you Herb, Carman,John and Bill. Beware of this company. Intimidation. Threats and shoddy work. They actually just called me and screamed at the top of the lungs after trying to fleece money from me from shoddy and incomplete work done on my 89 year old mom's house that was supposed to have been done in a day as we had been agreed over a week ago on the phone and in person with their person they sent to her house. They now are claiming it is a three day job and were gone for several hours not even working ! I had another handyman wanting to do the work who had also quoted a day to complete the job but I went with American Handyman as I had used them before and didn't know the other company, what a Mistake! They then tried to invoice me showing all painting done yet not even 1/3 done. Luckily I got photos and when I called them about this they screamed at me and then texted me to pay or they would lien my 89 year old mom's house. I offered to split the bill to try to resolve this and to pay the labor in half and that I would pay all the materials (2 cans of paint barely used) which was way more than fair after they "milked" the clock and disapperared for hours and took advantage of my mom, but they texted "Pay or be liened. " Intimidation and threats. WOW. Run Run Run from this company. This is taking advantage of elderly people and an unprofessional and beyond acceptable business practice. read more

Attitude of the worker was awful. when he rang the doorbell he covered the camera with his hand. It was an easy job. Small drywall repair and repair an electrical outlet. He complained and tried to shortcut the repairs. After listening to him cuss and complain we asked him to leave. He raised his voice and was unprofessional. He acted rushed and irritated to even be there. I've used this service before with great results. The last two times this worker has been the guy they sent. I wish I had read the reviews before hiring this company. Simple job: Calk my showers and kitchen counters. Chris said he would arrive ready to work. However, he left for over an hour and a 1/2 getting material. (Calk?) His invoice charged me for 4 1/2 hours. He invoiced me 63.41 for 2 tubes of calking. He doesn't seem to pay any attention to detail. The calking bled into the grout lines of the shower. In the kitchen, he didn't scrape out the old calking before applying the new bead causing bumps and pits. I complained to the owner who said Chris was his best guy and he sent him back to fix his mistakes. Well, he didn't. Chris started out pleasant and somewhat cleaned up the shower floor. But I had to follow him around and point out things he left undone. When I insisted he cut out old calking before he applied a new bead, he appeared angry running his knife back and forth quickly with force. He also damaged my sink with his knife or his calking gun. I shouldn't have to follow a professional around telling what to do. A professional should take initiative and do a professional job. After setting up, the calking in the kitchen again shows pits and bumps on it. It looks like a do it yourself job. I would not hire them again for ANYTHING. read more

I discovered I had a water leak in my backyard. It was in a difficult spot so wasn't clear what was going on. I live on an acre with lots of trees, etc. At first, Herb said no one would probably be available until the next day, but when I told him of a scheduling conflict for next day, he did all he could to get someone out same day. Couple of hours later, Bill Gundlach was calling me to tell me he was on the way! With his expertise, he was able to quickly figure out what was going on and stopped the leak. Additionally, he took the time to patiently explain what was going on and advised me with next steps. I'm especially appreciative of his advice regarding my yard lighting too. I was thinking I would need to get all new lights. He asked me why I would do that. The lights I have are nice and can be fixed instead of replaced, saving me a lot of money. I appreciate you, Bill! American Handyman sent Paul to remove and replace our pergola. He was clear on price as well as how it would be constructed. Friendly and polite. He picked up and delivered the supplies and chose paints to match our HOA paint colors. Our pergola was very old and had been put up very shoddily the first time with nails rather then long bolts. Paul used long bolts to make it extra sturdy. As a special added touch Paul put up and painted a new trellis at no extra cost. Afterwards he very thoroughly cleaned up the area. We were impressed with Paul's workmanship and professionalism. Extremely happy with the finished project and would hire them again. read more

Very unprofessional and dishonest! Stay away! Look at other the other negative reviews before calling these guys!!! This company attempted to charge $75+ for an estimate even though we were told in advance that there is no charge for an estimate as is the norm with other companies we have spoke with. We were also provided a quote that was three times the other existing quotes for work and when questioned about the disparity in pricing, the installer grabbed the estimate and angrily stormed out. When given a chance to make this situation right, the person I spoke with on the phone instead became defensive, angry and abrasive.
