I have been fortunate to volunteer since Sept. 2025 which has become my reason for getting out of bed and off my recliner as a retiree. Makes me feel needed and appreciated as what the feeling of accomplishment each 3 hour shift cannot be put into words. Plus once you've got your schedule figured out, you can join the Apple Corps as a regular volunteer. It's even better.

There are specifics of what they accept, so please be sure to check the website. We dropped off a few bags of gently used clothing and bedding/blankets. The people who work there were very friendly and appreciative of our donations. We were given a gentle reminder that they do not usually accept bedding/pillows, but, our stuff was in great condition, thus it was happily accepted. Great place to donate for a good cause!

They sat us in the very back against a wall (no air). Then given paper pallets for paint. You had to go get your own squirts of paint from 2 "stations" which was in bottles numbered. It was crazy just going to get the paints. Bumping into people because it was packed. You had to get your own paint brushes. They offered used aprons?!?! Snacks were $2 a piece. No thank you! So then you're told to come back in 5 days to pick it up after firing. But they send no messages or text. They did say they will keep it for 3 months. But the biggest reason was for was the bill was $168. for 3 ceramics pieces. AND they ask for a tip?!?! For What?!?! My DIL will pick up the pieces but I will not go back. Have 4 other grandchildren that wanted to go but we will find someplace else.

Years ago I used to have a job where I needed to wear suits and professional attire on a daily basis. For years I kept those suits and dresses thinking I was probably going to need them again in the near future. Well after five years of just storing them and never wearing them I decided to donate them at Dress for Success. Why I chose this nonprofit? Because I know that the clothes I donate will go to someone that actually needs it and will make good use of it. The donation process was super easy. They take donations Monday to Friday from 9:00am - 12:30pm, except for the first week of the month. When you arrive to the building, you need to head to the back area where you will see a gate. A staff member will let you in and will pick-up all your donations. If you need a donation receipt for your taxes they can also provide that for you. I am so happy that I was able to support this amazing organization and I appreciate all the work they do to empower women!

The Coppini Academy of Fine Art is a non-profit organization that is member-run and member…read moresupported. I frequently attended open drawing sessions on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. As far as I know, it is the only place in San Antonio , outside of the Universities and colleges , that consistently offers open drawing sessions in a professional studio, using live figure models. It even has open session for portraits on Friday mornings, using live models. Additionally it offers adult classes in oil painting, for beginners, intermediate, and more advanced painters. It has classes for children through its "Coppini Kids" program, and a "master class" in drawing for kids 11 - 17. As if this isn't enough, it offers workshops for members and the public, taught by popular and world-class artists who come in from across the country. If an artist is focused on representational art, the Coppini is a great place to investigate!

Support the local arts scene! The 1906 is a series of eight…read moreart galleries in a big converted warehouse, where cool local artists and vendors gather to show off their wares and creations. There's often beer available for a donation, and sometimes there's even food trucks parked out there. Each gallery is always innovative, creative, and thoughtfully shown. There's a restroom hidden in the back. They named this series of art galleries after the address- 1906. Seems for such a creative space they could have come up with a more creative name, but at least you know where it is. The 1906 is part of the Lone Star Arts District scene. Come check this place out on the second Saturday of the month. If you show up at another time, you might need an appointment with the artists. One of the galleries is run by S.M.A.R.T., a local consortium of upstart artists who show enough pieces to do a whole show, or they'll just show a piece or two, often from high school students or younger, and are products of the educational space that this place makes available to students. The whole place is a non-profit organization! They often have DJs, and cool art that you can't even buy- installation pieces just there to make you think. Check out the large motorcycle artwork out in the parking lot. It was made by Bob "Daddy-O" Wade, the infamous Texas artist who made the giant boots outside of North Star Mall, and the giant musical frogs on top of Carl's Corner. Parking can be challenging- if you park a ways down the street, you should find a spot! Just be sure to park on the same side as the train tracks, because sometimes the trains come to a complete stop there, and can block you off from your car. This place also does custom framing. They have a huge selection of funky, weird woods and materials to frame your masterpiece. They have the saws there to make the proper cuts so all your works of art are properly displayed. Overall, this is a great place to hang out if you catch it at the right time, Second Saturday.
