Although the primary focus of the center is to assist disabled veterans with finding career opportunities in the Washington DC area, many of their workshops and events are open to the local veteran community and are held primarily during weekday daytime hours. They also run the Washington DC Kaufman FastTrac class for new and aspiring military veteran entrepreneurs. I came here for the FastTrac program, which I'd highly recommend to anyVET who's contemplating owning and operating their own business. You do have to sign in at the front desk of the building, but sometimes the concierge is inconsistent so I'm not sure if it's a building thing or what - either way be sure to check in with the front desk. There are other nonprofits that inhabit the building but I'm not sure about their mission/focus. At the veterans center on the 2nd floor there's restrooms, two classrooms and a mini-lounge area with materials about other veterans-centric programs/events occurring in the area. They're not open on the weekends but I think that's because the building itself isn't open then. I finished "in the points" this time! It's held in the hall that you get to through the small bar. You get to the bar through a door with the Canteen sign above it off the parking lot. It's a very low-key place, with some VFW memorabilia. As a non-member, I signed in by the door. The decor is old and homey. There's around a dozen seats at the small bar, but i dont recall if there were any tables. There are some kind of lottery or scratch-off ticket machines, and a tv. The bartender keeps things moving, and there's a simple menu, hot dogs, pizza, cheeseburgers, chicken nuggets and fingers, a philly cheese steak, fries, and more. The burger was hot and juicy, and i think it may have been microwaved. Tasted fine. The fries were pretty good and piping hot. The people all seemed friendly and relaxed. If your at all cool, you wont find much for you here, but if you're just a regular person, this seems like a nice place for a quiet drink and some regular food.

A friend asked me to join them for Family Feud after Bingo. While I waited I went to bar in the…read moreBingo room and was rudely told that I had to go to the front bar. Off I went cash in hand and stood at the bar. The female bartender yelled at myself and another man that she was making a drink and the male bartender then helped 7 men that came in after me. After the female bartender finished making two drinks (that took about 10 minutes) then looked at me then helped two women of her own race that also came in after me. All this time there was another woman, not of my race that was audibly grumbling about people of my race being at the bar. At that point I gave up and left. May I add that this is exactly the same nonsense that chased my husband and I away a decade ago. We go to other legions in the area (Springfield and Lorton) where everyone is welcoming of all races and gender. It is a shame that at a non profit entity blocks from the US Capitol and what would be the closest bar to my home, you can't a bottle of beer based on your race or gender!

The people there were so friendly & welcoming that I felt right at home. It was trivia night & saw a lot of young people. This was refreshing. Was told this is a top VFW in the State of Virginia. I am a fairly new veteran (got back from Afghanistan in Jan 2012) but my father is a member as well. So to start off this place has a steep entry cost, you have to have served overseas in a designated war zone (check out the VFW site for all the minutea), other than that membership costs are pretty low. I think it great that there is an organization that allows vets to congregrate together in a protected place where there is a common bond of service.

Although the VFW is currently operating under COVID-19 restrictions and probably won't return to…read morefully normal operations for a bit, I've spent a considerable amount of time here volunteering and socializing, so I figured I would write a review of what it has to offer. This VFW location is the largest post by membership in the world! While there is a core group you'll tend to see at most of the events, it's a rare occurrence when you won't meet someone new when visiting. You'll find people of all ages and different connections to military life, whether serving directly as veterans or having a family member who was a veteran. (Yes, you can join as auxiliary member if you have a connection to a veteran as a husband or wife, widower or widow, father or mother, grandfather or grandmother, son or daughter, grandson or granddaughter, or brother or sister!) One of the most popular events at the VFW is bingo. (Bingo is open to the public.) Every Tuesday and Thursday, the doors open at 5:30 and early bird bingo starts at 7:30. No matter if you are a beginner or have been playing bingo longer than I've been alive, you can have the opportunity to win a $100 round or a jackpot game. (I've seen the progressive jackpots go over $2000 for a card!) Food and beverages are available for purchase while you play. You can also buy pull-tabs throughout the night. My personal favorite is karaoke night and I miss it very much. Everyone dances, sings, and laughs together. Usually karaoke night is also wing night, so you can get food specials before enjoying a night of music. The prices for drinks and food are really reasonable, so you can have a night out without draining your wallet. The bar area is spacious and includes several rooms, including a section with electronic game machines. The VFW also hosts special events, like military balls and holiday gatherings. It's always awesome to see veterans in their finery and families gathering together for a celebration. A monthly calendar is posted on the website with upcoming events.
