The entry works pretty smoothly though, and since we had prepaid tickets, they were able to look us up, give us a map and we were parked quickly. I was there specifically for the Thomas Dambo exhibit. He is a Danish sculpture artist known for his giant trolls made out of recycled wood. Each troll is unique and has a name and purpose....to save the Humans and teach them about sustainability. The trails are beautiful in the woods and clearly marked. There was a beautiful section of the forest where an original piece of music was being played from 24 speakers as you followed the trail. An enchanting small lake filled with water lilies was out the back door of the main building. They have a small cafeteria and a nice gift shop.The building was full of interesting exhibits, including a tank with otters.

They were so active and playful, I could have watched them for hours. 2. Daily critter encounters - not sure what it's called exactly, but they have multiple opportunities throughout the day to hear a presentation and see an animal up close. On our visit we got to see the Kestrel. The presentation was quite interested. The small theater area is quite nice. 3. The Wild Walk is so nice and accessible! The interactive opportunities along the walk are great as well. 4. Lots and Lots of things to look at and explore inside and outside. Many trails. Tons of artifacts. The Troll exhibit was so cool. You really could spend an entire day here and still not do everything. 5. Lastly - THE GIFT SHOP. Seriously? I'm in love. So many wonderful, beautiful things. I had to keep myself from spending money this trip, but OH! Be still my nerdy nature-loving heart! Definitely make this a part of your next ADK adventure.

All have a museum of some sort and Lake Placid (1932 and 1980) is no exception. Lake Placid is one of the smallest cities to host and it's clear even today that it would have been challenged with the huge event. Today, there are huge hotels and the roads have been improved but it is far from major transportation and I would imagine transportation was a big challenge. The XIII Winter Games was held from February 13 to 24, 1980. Americans will best remember it for the men's hockey who unexpectedly won the gold medal, defeating the Soviet (not yet "Russia") team in the game now called the Miracle on Ice (multiple movies including one starring Kurt Russell). The museum has a big section specifically dedicated to this series and the original scoreboard is on display. Lots of other memorabilia including uniforms, tickets, and such. There are a lot of informative and interactive areas, including exhibits on memory, energy, plate tectonics, Earth science, the geodynamo, chip chemistry, and the Micron memory megafab. I especially liked that the museum had enough depth for adults to actually learn something, while still being very kid-friendly with hands-on displays and play areas for younger children. My only small gripe is that a few of the exhibits and interactive devices felt older or worn, and some were not fully functional during our visit. Given the age of the museum and how much hands-on use these exhibits probably get from younger visitors, it is understandable. Hopefully they continue repairing and refreshing them, because the museum itself is definitely worth supporting and revisiting. The building itself is also pretty cool, with a historic exterior and a spacious multi-level layout inside. Overall, this is a great educational stop for families, kids, and adults who enjoy science, technology, and learning something new. Highly recommended.

Worth every single penny plus a big tip to the captain who we learned is only a volunteer. Captain Torensen I believe was his name. My husband said we should make the tour part of our annual 1000 Islands trip. I have to agree. We own a boat but there was something about being in that woody speeding around the gorgeous scenery by an expert captain that left a lasting impression on me. We enjoyed looking at all the antique boats in the numerous buildings on the property. My kids even had a great time and were not bored. There is also a small play garden and some interactive features throughout. I honestly assumed the museum itself would be a bit boring but it was not. We ended up missing a building so pay close attention to your map as you go through. Our GPS took us straight to the main building front door where there is metered street parking but we were informed by someone from the restoration shop across the street that there is a free grass parking lot behind the the shop. There was a lovely lady at the front desk who answered so many of my questions and provided extremely helpful advice about their Tuesday free sailing program which unfortunately was postponed until tomorrow but we may try to come back to participate. We also bought some items from the gift shop and the gentleman running the counter in there was very friendly as well. 10/10 cool place to visit with wonderful staff

He attended the art school at Yale University and eventually went out west to Montana at age nineteen, returning to Ogdensburg and eventually his first publishing in 1886 at the age of twenty-five. He is perhaps best known for the sculpture "The Broncho Buster" which has a copy here on display. As well, a number of his other paintings of the west. The images have captions and there are art tours/discussions on a regular basis. I have encountered his works at the Great Plains Art Museum in Lincoln NE, the Denver Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. You will know it when you see it. I get it, the prices need to be on the higher side so they can make sure the animals are being well taken care of. We went on a very quiet Saturday, so it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Staff were so friendly. This place would be great for a rainy day, but it was hard to stay couped up indoors when it was such a nice day outside. We were able to leave and have lunch else where (there was no cafeteria that I noticed on site), and we were able to come back after and hang out a bit more. The kids were not too impressed with the fish, but they LOVED the water table activity center. I'd recommend a visit at least once.
