We were on vacation in San Diego County when my husband had a heart attack and we had to call 911. Honestly, I don't remember much as I was obviously very upset and scared. The fire, paramedics and I guess the ambulance came I gave them all my Insurance information (as we have a great PPO Insurance) I followed the ambulance in my car which was 2 miles. My husband spent the next 10 days in Grossmont Hospital and had a new pacemaker/defibrillator put in. We finally got back to our home in Redondo Beach where he could relax and heal. Then about 3 weeks later I received a bill for $4,401.73 which did NOT show my insurance info so I called and sent them back the bill with my insurance info. My Insurance said AMR is OUT of network so they only paid $886.59 as per their contract. I called AMR and explained and they said I owed the difference of $3,515.14 and I was like WHATTTTT (My husband was dying on the floor and Im not about to question if the ambulance is in or out of network) Seriously! Ive called 3 x speaking to someone in India who I can't even understand got fed up and asked to speak to a supervisor who speaks clear english. She was no help either and wouldn't even work with me.... We only had to pay $1,700 for a 10 day stay in the hospital and major surgery thanks to our insurance but now we are being billed $3,515.14 for a 2 mile drive from our Air B&B in La Mesa to Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa again Seriously? This Company should be ashamed of themselves taking advantage of people who need emergency medical treatment and have NO choice when they show up and transport you. Charged $1154.78 to be transported across the street from a Surgery Center to the Hospital. On the phone for 41 minutes with the Philippines trying to resolve a $2 discrepancy in my bill. Billing department stated my dollar amounts on the invoice received were incorrect. After speaking to two agents and one supervisor nothing was resolved. Asked to transfer to survey and the call was intentionally dropped. Called back to ask for survey again and after repeating all my identification information had the call dropped again. Terrible customer service. If I have a choice will never use this company again. read more

If at all possible, record the conversion with this company if setting up a transport. We were quoted one figure and charged over double the quoted amount. If they transport round trip you will receive a separate bill for both ways! I really don't recommend using this company for Non-Emergencies!! read more

The gate guard for the phone system is working overtime. There is not one representative that was available to take my call. I just wanted to pay my bill. I was on hold 24 minutes and then got hung up on. Was everyone out to lunch at the same time? Was the office closed? Why isn't there a message that tells you how many calls are in front of you so you can make a decision to hold or not to hold? I called an 800 number listed in Akron, OH and ended up talking to an offshore payment processor. Where is the security in that? Since I couldn't get any help from my local office, I thought it might be more expedient to call headquarters. It wasn't. Imagine the surprise when you get the same woman on the phone that doesn't tell advise you that you will be on terminal hold. I sure hope that if I need an ambulance that the service they provide will be better than the phone. It sucked! read more

I recently had to get rushed to the ER (an experience I hope no one has to go through), and the men were all extremely kind and knowledgeable. After that, I received a bill from American Medical Response. At first I wondered why they didn't ask for my insurance card which would have saved them and ME from this bill, especially since they did ask for my ID.. why not get the insurance information along with that? Nevertheless, I called the number, gave them my insurance information and didn't think any more of it. A few weeks later, they sent another bill with only one week to go for the due date. It said that they weren't able to get in contact with my insurance company and I had to pay immediately. I freaked out and called my insurance company. They were confused. They said they just received the bill and it's being processed. Apparently AMR does this to scare patients into paying because once someone pays, there's no way of being reimbursed even if the insurance pays too.. that way they get double the payment. What a horrible and inhumane practice! These are people who are sick that AMR is dealing with and trying to rip off! Also, just to give everyone of the price breakdown: ALS emergency was 2073$ Mileage (4 miles) was $203 Pulxe oximetry was $368 Disposable linen was $57 Personal care supplies $27 Electrodes $193 To a grand total of $2924.24 I couldn't imagine a person without insurance having to pay for this.
