I really wish I'd read these reviews before selecting this company for our rental properties landlord policy. On the one hand - their prices were lower than the company we switched from, they allow easy online payments, and the folks at the call center seem professional and empathetic. But that's where it ends. The first time I contacted them about filing a claim - the claim was denied even though a contractor had indicated that the damage was due to a storm. The second time I contacted them about filing a claim - and I can't get my adjuster to even return a call or respond to an email. This is beyond frustrating. read more

Absolutely one of the worst insurance companies I've ever dealt with. The assigned agent, Erin Gavin, never answered the phone or returned my emails. Every time I called, I was transferred multiple times, had to repeat my situation over and over, and still got no resolution. I had an apartment fire over a month ago and following filing the claim I have had to call multiple times with no answer. The first agent I worked with was Abe and he set up an appointment to do a statement and never answered or returned calls when the appointment came to. Following this incident I requested a new agent. I left a message with his supervisor Ted and again never heard back. Then the company got me in touch with Teddy Johnson, and once again another unprofessional interaction. He followed through with the recorded statement and then said "I will reach out to you within 24-48 hours". 12 days later he finally called back and left a voicemail. When I tried to call him back he has not responded to multiple voicemails. This experience with this company has been absolutely horrible and completely unprofessional. I have been trying to get my claim squared away for going on two months now. My adjuster never calls me back, will not communicate clearly about what is needed, declines bids with minimal feedback - meanwhile - half of my roofing is gone and multiple windows have failed, and we are incurring more damage as it is the middle of winter. Additionally, she sent a check when I expressed that I needed to see what was being covered first - told me she would send that documentation just needed the correct mailing address, and sent the check instead. American Modern is a modern capitalist scam. They insure your property and are happy to have you pay your premiums. But if you ever file a claim, they seem to routinely deny them. In my case, it was denied because of "wind damage". Well, duh! I paid for insurance so that my roof would be insured. I don't particularly care what the source of the problem was. I apply for insurance in case "wind damage" causes a leak. I worked with the Ohio BBB, California Dept. of Insurance, and Ohio Dept. of Insurance. None of them were particularly helpful. Just know that American Modern is not an honest and reputable company. They are glad to take your monthly premiums, but are very creative for finding excuses to avoid paying a claim. read more

I had a manufactured home policy and miised the payment date and after making the payment late by 10 days as I was out of state and did not have a computer to check in with. When I got back in the mail there was a letter stating my policy was canceled. I made the payment and next letter siad they will not renew it. Most insurance companies have a 30 day grace period but they only have a 7 day grace period. I'm happy that I never had a claim and have found a lot better company to work with. read more

Wow, wish I could have read these reviews before getting involved with American Modern and now I should be happy about what happened in my situation. We struggled to make the payment because the website is utter crap so I decided to make it when we got home from vacation. My fault completely thinking it was due the 31st but we literally gave it to them 1 day too late and they canceled our policy. After years of never having a problem with payments, after never having one claim, having perfect credit. Canceled. Then they said we could rewrite the policy and I was like fine but then they said oh, we aren't writing policies in your area anymore. So now we have no insurance and have to scramble to find another policy. But reading these reviews I see that's probably a good thing because if we had continued and something happened to our condo, they clearly wouldn't have paid. Avoid this insurance company like you would the plague!!! Our home has a 4 year old metal roof which has started leaking after a series of storms, every room inside is showing signs of water damage and mold. we had a local roofing company asses the damages and their recommendations were to replace roof due to the extent of the damages. The claims adjuster Evan Mesaros denied the claim as he thought the cost to repair was 124.00 which is less than our deductible. They made it a point to mention that all future claims on the roof would be denied due to damages from this claim which is not covered. This scam of a company is more interested in stealing money for services they never plan on providing. I'll be contacting The Division of Consumer Affairs within the Missouri Department of Commerce & Insurance (DCI) & the BBB. read more

I've had an absolutely terrible experience with American Modern insurance. Their employees and customer service is abysmal--long wait times on the phone or no response at all, unhelpful representatives who seem clueless about their own policies, and a general lack of empathy towards their customers' concerns. When I filed a claim after a flood, the process was agonizingly slow. It took weeks of back-and-forth just to get a response, and when they finally did pay out, it was significantly less than what I expected based on my coverage. It felt like they were nickel-and-diming me at every turn. We received their initial payment 40 days after the flood, it only covered 25% of our expenses (since we made the repairs out of pocket rather than waiting). Our insurance should cover up to $51,206 for water damage but we received a reimbursement amount of $2,375.06, after a $1,000 deductible. For example, our adjuster, Patricia Nyegaard, claimed that they won't pay for Emergency plumbing services to stop the water flow and repair the broken pipe inside the concrete slab, while this expense qualifies as the first step of water mitigation which is defined as stopping the water flow, and hence should be covered under our policy. She followed with one of the craziest statements that we should have received authorization of the expense before stopping the water. In that case, our whole basement will be flooded rather than one bedroom and one bathroom. We tried to follow up with Patricia without any response from her. That shows the level of professionalism and customer service. The primary adjuster, Hughes Matthew, that Patricia replaced, provided the most unprofessional and disrespectful answer to one of our emails, stating to remove him from any communication, that we are reaching to incorrect parties, to refrain from sending further documentation to him, etc. That says a lot about customer service and how much they care about customers. Moreover, their premiums are outrageously high compared to competitors offering the same coverage. They reel you in with promises of comprehensive protection but fail miserably when it comes to delivering on their commitments. I would strongly advise anyone considering American Modern insurance, to look elsewhere for coverage. Dealing with them has been nothing short of a nightmare, and I regret ever signing up with them. At this point, we have no other choice than to pursue legal actions. I would like to hear from other very dissatisfied customers what type of actions they took and if the company stepped up to make it right. read more

American Modern Insurance is by far the worse company out there. I have a roof leaking water into the house. The first insurance adjuster said it was bad caulking around the window. However, when they sent the second adjuster out and saw that the caulking was like new, they still denied coverage. A roofing company was here to show him exactly where the roof was leaking, but they still said no and won't help replace it or even cover half. I definitely don't recommend them to anyone who needs insurance. I have had Collector car insurance with them for many years. Their system is archaic, you will never get a simple email reminding you that your policy is about to expire. it's paid once a year so if you happen to remember and it doesn't lapse the website takes you to a generic 90's era CC payment page where you enter the amount to be paid, and nowhere on their site tells you the renewal amount. so I just enter the same amount I've paid for the last 7 years. There is zero communication from them, I hope I'm never in an accident, I don't trust them. after reading these reviews ill move to a new Co next time. read more

Great ending experience through the entire process, The process was lengthy and required a good amount of effort on my end with constant follow-up overall. Claims to be specialized but lack of knowledge when it comes to collector vehicles. I recently tried to insure a collectable SUV but was denied by several agents all using American Modern. They're response was "...this vehicle is not appreciating in value and holds no collectability, the vehicle would not be eligible for the Collector Vehicle Program" Nothing could be more untrue than that. It is obvious the underwriter has no market knowledge of these vehicles. I even sent them sales records and appraisals from the last 3 years showing these vehicles have been appreciating and now average 2x what I wanted them to cover it for. With data like that, its obvious somebody missed the boat on this one. I will be cancelling my other policies with them as I tend to support good companies who provide top-notch products and have an ounce of common sense. read more

From what I can tell, this is a garbage company relying on garbage software. They are using Nationwide and Progressive (possibly others) as brokers for their policies. The rates are good, but their computer system is inflexible and developed by amateurs. I got my policy through Progressive and Progressive gave them my phone number, which is a landline. Their system requires you to docusign using 2-factor authentication with the mobile phone number they have on file. They apparently can only have one number on file and it must be a mobile number. I called them and got the number changed so I could get 2-factor authentication for docusign to work. I got the documents signed, then a week later, I get another request to docusign something else, and it is still using the landline number. How is that even possible when they don't even have my landline number associated with my policy anymore? I've been a software engineer for over 30 years and I would be embarrassed to have developed whatever garbage software they're using. Now I'm stuck with them for a year, unless I pay a $100 fee. Maybe it's worth it to get away from them, and maybe that's their plan. At this point, I'm certain that I will never be able to do anything without a huge hassle because they will keep trying to use my landline for things that only mobile phones can do. It's an understatement to say that American Modern Insurance Group is "not good". If they can't even get a policy set up correctly, there's no way you can ever trust them to deal with a claim. read more

I was never able to speak directly with the Adjuster and after communicating with LeAnne Armstrong, via email, she scheduled a visit a week away. Today, she was to make an on-site visit at 11:00am. I arrived at 10:50 and at 11:35 I began trying to reach LeAnne. She never showed up, never replied to my email or text, and never called to cancel the appointment. If you are looking for a reputable home owners insurance carrier, steer clear of American Modern Insurance. We filled a claim in 2023 for a bathroom leak which required a complete remodel to include new floor joists which was denied and closed. American Modern claims Adjuster said leaks are considered flood and our policy did not have a flood policy on it. We don't live anywhere near a flood zone, hence why we didn't pay for an additional flood policy. We filed another claim in October 2024 as our home is buckling in the middle and we have a huge hole in the floor and ceiling. After the inspection, we were told that we'd hear from our claims Adjuster within 10 business days. It is now a month later and after voicemails and emails being left numerous times, we have still never heard anything regarding our claim. When I signed into my online account, the claim shows closed. We have 2 small children and it's now snowing and we have no resolution. I will be filing Bad Faith claims on both claims. We pay over $2k a year for our home owners insurance and it's evident that American Modern Insurance does not care for the customers they serve. read more

I wished I read the reviews before buying a policy with AMIG. A storm blew off part of my roof as well as some other wind/hail damage. Took a week to get someone to assess the damage and then the assessment was not complete. Adjuster did not assess the interior for damage related to outside even though the contractor and I specifically pointed out the problem. Adjuster appeared to refuse to work with the contractor and I'm forced to be the moderator/middle man. For a layperson, the language and process can be very uncomfortable. All this is causing delays and potentially worsening the problem as the season is cooler and wetter. I selected AMIG from people who said their are easy to work with; albeit higher premium.
