First I got overcharged for my taxes. Then it was a pain to get the money back. I also filed for multiple years and I thought i would call the IRS and check on my tax return and they said there was no record of them even being filed. So for the last 2 decades I've always done my own taxes, using online "do it yourself" tax websites. Last year me and my wife bought our first home. So to make a long story short, I once again went to do my own taxes, thinking I was going to get a huge refund. When I was done running the numbers, I was very disappointed with the end result. After reveling in the honeymoon stage of being newly married the reality set in when tax season came about. My husband hasn't filed in 3 years. I was terrified to find out how much he would owe but knew it had to be done. I didn't want to go to H & R block, the impersonal service and get in and get out atmosphere didn't appeal to me. After reading reviews for America's Tax Service I was hopeful that they would take the time to help my husband and I. To say I was amazed by these ladies is an understatement. I think they sensed my fear as we walked in. They offered coffee, tea, water and even had a child's area for my step son to play in. We had bags of receipts and piles of paystubs not knowing what all was needed for so many years of not paying. Michelle patiently took the time to sort through our chaos. She explained every single step that was taken and did all of this with the biggest smile and the most awesome attitude. 2 other customers walked in without appointments and the other accountants were quick to help them with their taxes. After our tax accountant moved further away we tried H&R Block last year and were not real impressed. Upon the recommendation of a "neighbor" on the Nextdoor community website I checked in to Americas Tax Service in downtown Martinez. I found several positive reviews on YELP and was able to get a Saturday afternoon appointment within 3 days of calling, even this late into tax season. Michelle was AWESOME! She even found a deduction that we had not been taking advantage of and it helped produce our first refund in several years. Michelle is amazing! We have always done our taxes on our own through TurboTax or some other self-tax software and this year it was showing that we owed more than twice what we owed last year. I was totally dumbfounded because not much had changed besides a slight income increase (which did not put us into another bracket). She dropped our liability down to MUCH LESS than what we owed last year, and we ended up getting a state refund that would basically cover the little bit that we owed for federal. We never wanted or expected a refund because we know we don't qualify for those anymore, but she still saved us a TON of money. I felt her rates were totally reasonable, she is so much fun and so knowledgeable! We were stressed out going to this appointment, not looking forward to it at all, and left feeling great knowing that we will be coming back to her every year.
