We've been using Ames Pet Resort for 7 years now for both boarding and grooming and I highly recommend them. Yes, it is true that it can be hard to reach them by phone and yes in the 7 years my dog has gotten 2 haircuts that weren't done well but my dog is happy to go there and the staff who have been there a long time are wonderful. No place is completely perfect. And in my experience with them overall, the good greatly outweighs the bad. read more

We left our beloved three year old dog in the care of the Ames Pet Resort in May of 2024 and our dog escaped and was hit and killed by a car. The facility didn't notify us when they put our dog on precautionary status for trying to jump the outdoor fence, nor did the business follow their own protocol to stay with our dog on a leash when outside after his first attempt to jump the fence. In addition, the staff didn't administer our dog's anxiety drugs as instructed. Finally, once our dog died in their care after jumping the poorly designed outdoor enclosure and after being left by himself, they did NOTHING to fix the structural design issue to keep other dogs safe. Our dog was one of the greatest things in our life and the Pet Resort treated him like a piece of replaceable property. Our experience after the incident was also disappointing and proved to us the owner is profit driven and not in business for the safety of your pet. read more

Recently, I took my cats to Ames Pet Resort for boarding as was in between housing and have nowhere to stay - leaving me and my cats essentially homeless. But, after reading reviews I thought this would be a great boarding facility for them. I was wrong. Within an hour of dropping off my cats a staff member called me stating that the cats were very stressed. This did not surprise me as both of my cats have pretty bad separation anxiety (which I listed on their boarding consent forms). They later called me again stating that one of my cats "attacked" a staff member. They stated that if this behavior continues someone would have to pick up my cats. I completely understand needing to keep staff safe, but, they gave my cats no time to settle in and get used to their new environment. Again, at this time I had nowhere to stay and no one to take my cats. Also, my cats have been to boarding facilities in the past and I have NEVER gotten a call with them having issues. My assumption is that this facility is not capable or competent enough to take in cats. I have worked at boarding facilities and we have NEVER called an owner in the middle/beginning of their stay stating that they would need to be picked up regardless how aggressive the animal is (I have been bit my cats and dogs and we continued to let them board during their stay, we told them at time of pick up that their pet was not suitable for boarding). I picked up my cats the next day and took them to a vet clinic that offers boarding. My cats received no complaints and after two days they were completely settled into their new environment. Do not take your cat here unless you want added stress during your time away!!! read more

First off I want to say I love Ames Pet Resort! They are who we trust to groom our two dogs, and have done so for years. Do not bring your pet here!!! They're really abusive to animals & use personal information & pictures of your pet without consent!! Our pet is like our child--how would you like it if you started seeing your child's picture on bus ads & on the main page for the business...yes the cute puppy on the main page is our puppy peanut! That have used our puppies picture for personal advertising & even bus ads without consent!! Illegal & very unprofessional. The young staff tending the cages were slamming cage doors & forcing & dragging animals..abusive! Please remove our puppies picture(peanut). We have confronted the owner & no respect..Randy Duncan you know we have discussed this! Please do not take your pet here!!! The owner Randy Duncan has no respect & urged us to sue him after we called & confronted him many times! I recommend you find somewhere else. Australian Shepard Owner I board and daycare my puppy for 4 days, when I picked him up they showed me his paws. They said he played hard, so he played though is puppy paw pads. He said it happens all the time, it will heal. If it happens all the time why aren't they checking the puppy's and dogs to make sure this isn't happening? To have him groomed he looks awful!! His hind legs and butt are chopped, his ears weren't even trimmed and suppose to feather his fur it's chopped and uneven though out his hole back. I left him with them to care for him and instead I picked him up injured and they made me feel like it was no big deal it happen to him. So a vet bill, medicine cream and antibiotic, I had to buy puppy paw pads to keep the ointment on his paws and I have to pay someone else to try to fix their mistakes. And the manager made me feel like it was no big deal to him. This is my baby and I left him in their care and they hurt him and ruined part of his fur. My puppy has always been very stubborn and has an attitude. When my girlfriend and I went to Kansas we had to drop him. Both of us where worried since this was the first time he wasn't going to be waking up to us. A couple days in we called and the workers where very polite. When my puppy came out he had a smile ear to ear. Since going he has been far more social and his behavior has gotten a lot better. I would trust this place with my puppy and day of the week and I was very happy with the customer service I received. I would recommend this place with full confidence. read more

As simple as living up to your word when you charge customers for services rendered would be grounds for a better review. Instead of telling customers that they must be picked up by 5 maybe consider telling them that they must be picked up prior to noon to avoid charging for an additional day. And then when the customer calls to ask you about the discrepancy you tell them that "they should've checked the website". It's a shame to lose a customer over a few hours and an extra $50 charge that wasn't explained to me. read more

I have worked at this facility for 7 years now since it opened. I bring my personal pup for daycare and use the boarding facility quite frequently. This facility is extremely clean and the people who work there on a daily basis love the animals like they are their own. I have personally sat with dogs who wouldnt eat because it can be stressful for some and loved on them to help them feel more comfortable. The photos used on our website and on facebook are all posted with owners permission. I am one of the groomers and have 12 years experience grooming professionally, i have worked in vet clinics as a tech and at a big shelter for a few years. I love working with dogs and this is one of the best place i have ever worked! read more

Moved to Ames about a month and a half ago. This weekend was the first time I was having to travel and leave my fur baby alone in the new city. I looked around and asked for some recommendations; eventually I came upon Ames pet resort. After reading some of the reviews I decided to give them a shot, and that man not easy for me cause my dog is my child. I was late making a reservation so I had to book the "suite" for my pup which would be way more that enough space, but again I was late making the reservation so that's on me. When I went in to drop her off I let the staff member know that she has some really big anxiety issues. I also asked for her to get to be in day care while she was boarded (if she passed the temperament test) and if she didn't I would pay for the individual play so that she can run and have fun. I also asked if they could send me pictures of her daily so I could see that she's doing ok (as part of her anxiety). They sent the pictures which as good. However, when I went to pick her up I was checking out and was informed of my total and it didn't seem right based on the daycare or individual play price. I asked if she got to go to daycare, the person checking me out said "I did her temperament test and she didn't do that well in the big area, so I tried bringing her up front and she growled a lot at other dogs." I said I understand, then asked did she not get her individual play? The lady behind the desk said no. I got pretty upset knowing now that my dog was confined to the kennel for the three days (beyond the individual bathroom breaks, on a leash). I got super pissed off and asked why she didn't get to do individual play when I asked for it, if she didn't pass the temperament test. The girl that seemed to be in charge brought my dog out and was apparently given a heads up that I was pissed. She blamed my dog being confined to the kennel and not getting the requested play time on "the new receptionist that was on duty Saturday" and tried to apologize for the miscommunication. Again I was highly pissed and to blame it on another staff member is not how you deal with a customer that just spent over $100 on their dog to be safe and happy and only really one of those needs was satisfied (her being safe). It's also not a good thing to blame other staff members that aren't there to defend themselves. I understand miscommunication but how hard would it have been to call me and say sir your pup didn't pass the temperament test, would you like us to do individual play? I mean they were texting me photos. This is just my experience; I am not saying don't go there, but I definitely won't be going back. The only reason I am giving two stars is because at least I was able to get the pictures of her. read more

My Charlie girl was boarded here a few times no issues until the last time - I decided to put her in 1 day of daycare out of the 2 days she was there. Needless to say, NEVER again. She came back with and eye infection, stomach infection, ear infection due to multiple scratches and bites on the inner and outer ear. Scratches on her inner thighs as well. And the best part, NOBODY has an explanation as to what happened nor did I ever receive a call or was told anything about this. I discovered these injuries on my own. They claim to check your dog thoroughly.... but obviously not! Though they have affordable prices, take your pet somewhere else. read more
