Great care and service. Our family dog recently lost a fight with cancer. All throughout the process, from diagnosis to treatment to the eventuality of our loss, the doctors and staff at PMC worked tirelessly to provide the best care to our family member as possible. On my best friend's last day, each of the staff shared some of their lunch with him (cheesecake, stroganoff, etc) to help comfort him. That's the type of people that work here, there is no one I would trust more with our furry family members care. read more

This was about 7 years ago. We took our cat in because he had gained some weight, and within 5 minutes, Dr Rizzo had told us that he probably had FIV, and had roughly a year to live. We were shocked and very emotional from this news, but she seemed certain.. She took him in back to get fluids and confirm, and about 20 minutes later she told us that he was just fat. As relieved as we were in the moment, that has never sat right with me, and while I am delighted to say that our kitty is still with us (and still a little pudgy), I feel obligated to warn others that Dr Rizzo could put them through the same unnecessary emotional turmoil. I'm hoping by now she's retired or found some work that suits her better. She seemed otherwise nice enough. read more

My 6 month old lab was very sick. On a Friday evening they stayed until 930pm to do surgery to recover the corn cob he had eaten and had gotten stuck in his small intestines. They were amazing. They explained everything to me, helped me get him out to the car, and made sure that I knew everything that was happening during surgery through text message. This vet clinic is far from great. It's hardly even exceptional. I walk in and there was no greeting. It left me clueless on what I had to do with my dog. Hardly any communication between the Vet Techs and the customers. Dr. Rizzo didn't know the gender of my dog when I went in for a spay exam (which I had called to make an appointment for a week ahead). She was also giving shots to my dog that I did not know about but had to pay for later. There was no communication as to what the surgery would entail. There was also no communication as to what I had to do after the exam to set the appointment for the surgery. Terrible service and I hate that I put my dog through it. read more

Friendly staff and reasonable prices but beware -- they will bombard you with phone calls

It is not as expensive as other places, yet the staff is incompetent. First, they do selective listening. My dog clearly is a rough collie, not a border collie. When asked what breed I had, I made sure to say rough collie, yet on the documents, they put my dog as a border collie. Then the vet called me out saying my dog was rough collie that I needed to know the difference. I DO. Your staff doesn't. When I made an appointment to spay my dog, the staff did not tell me anything about the procedures and when I tried to ask, they tell me that they'll explain the day of. I show up the day of the surgery and ask questions. The staff literally started LAUGHING in my face asking me if I did not know the procedure. They ask me if it wasn't explained. It was not explained and that is why I am asking you. My dog has anxiety and the surgery was traumatic for her. When I show up they mention my dog was being naughty (just because she was crying out loud all night and until I showed up) and do not explain anything about the surgery afterward. I felt as if they just wanted me to leave. I am someone who questions things a lot just to make sure things are being done right and it seemed to bother them. When we went to get her stitches out, the vet literally slams my dog on the table and hit her head hard. She slammed her twice. They needed three people to hold my dog down. I think it was unnecessary. How can you not calm a dog down and just grab the dog and slam it to the table? The staff needs training on how to work with people because it has not been a great place. Also, the vet has issues too. Very rude to folks. She goes on these rants about taking your dog to the dog park. I get scared taking my dog to her because I feel that she does not listen. I have to ask questions everytime that way they can reiterate what procedures or shots my dog is getting. Last time I went, they did not mark off on my dog's vet shot records that my dog got her rabies shot, even though they gave me the tag for it... I had to go back and ask them to do it. They just rush you in and out. Not good... Reading previous comments about the vet's behavior makes sense... To be honest, I only go here for the shots and what is needed. Most times, I have been able to heal my dog from home without dealing with the trauma of taking her to the vet to get treated like a worthless animal and a client. read more

I am 63 years old, live on a fixed income, legally blind, don't drive and have a companion animal named Sandy. Sandy is 8 years old, has more than one health issue, and to make matters worse is NOT a social /friendly dog. She has an evil twin that one NEVER knows when it comes out. She is a cocker spaniel / beagle mix and was a shelter dog who had a horrible start. She has to be groomed every 4 months. She has to be sedated many times, just so Dr. Rizzo can groom her as no other groomer in town will handle her. This info is important when understanding why Dr. Rizzo and crew, in my opinion, is the best vet clinic in Ames. As Sandy would say, "padders down".They could not be better in careing for this "special needs" child. Not to mention, her very protective daddy. Dr. Rizzo has gone, more than once, the "extra mile" for both Sandy and I. Not only in her treatment but even when I broke my ankle and had to board her for two months, Dr. Rizzo worked out a payment plan to pay off the bill. I have only had one other vet who has done this for me and it was not here in Ames. Even though Sandy is a difficult case they are always glad to see her and treat her like she is a model patient. The prices of services and meds are very competitive. But no one else, and I've FIRED three other vets here in Ames, really spends quality time explaining everything in detail. I am not ready to say this is the best clinic I've ever had but around here " NO ONE DOES IT BETTER" I read a horrifying review on Dr. Rizzo that said just because she was involved in a bad accident she should not practice. I would like to respond to this ridiculous theory by saying. " I'd love this person to meet my Sandy and let her evil twin respond for both of us". Anyone who could be so craas and small minded should get as much attention as this person would from Sandy while she was having this person for lunch. Bad part of it would be, I'd have to visit Dr. Rizzo as I know Sandy would end up with some horrible stomach disease. If you want the best, just try em' and see for yourself. You will find what I've said here is ALL true. If it were not for this clinic, more than likely I would have to euthanize Sandy and send her to " The Bridge". With all my heart, a BIG THANK YOU for caring for my little girl so I can continue to see that Sandy gets as good a life as possible. I'll supply the love, Pet Medical Clinic will give me that opportunity. read more

The best veterinary clinic around. I would recommend this place to everyone. They really care about my cats and like to make the whole process of being examined and vaccinated as easy and comfortable for them as possible. I have never met anyone working here that I didn't like or trust when it comes to healthcare for my pets. They are very helpful and make sure you know the best way to care for your pets. They are also very reasonably priced and don't inflate prices like some veterinary clinics I have been to in the past did. read more
