It was love at first site! I can't say enough great things about the Amherst Inn. So charming and the first painted Lady I've have ever been in. It's family owned and you can tell because they take such pride & care of ownership; because everything is pristine and beautifully maintained. We stayed in the 'Austin' room with one (so comfortable) queen bed and our room looked out on to the main highway; which was surprisingly quiet considering it was graduation week. Went down stairs for breakfast every morning and found out they had gluten-free options- eggs, cereal, omelettes, bread... so impressed! Thank you!!! Location is fabulous! Cozy and well-decorated Victorian style house located just two blocks from downtown Amherst and 15min from the Amherst College. Host was attentive and friendly. She walked us through the room and made breakfast upon requests every morning! There is also an outdoor garden and side porch where you can chill and relax and perhaps read a good book. read more

Excellent experience! I visited in June 2022 and loved it so much I had to come back the next year. The couple who run the place are very kind and helpful, and had great tips for things to do and places to visit. They really went above and beyond and made it a special and relaxing time. Definitely recommend visiting! The are clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated. Cozy beds and generous breakfast (especially recommend the banana bread). The location is beautiful - super green with a pretty garden, and the Emily Dickinson museum is right across the street. There are excellent restaurants in the area (Anne from the Inn recommended Johnny's, and I would too). It's just a couple minutes' walk from downtown Amherst in one direction, and in the other is a natural area where you can watch the fireflies at certain times of year. Stayed here while visiting my boyfriends alma mater, Amherst College, over the weekend. This is the nicest bed & breakfast I've ever been too! The owners and hostess were so attentive, kind, congenial and excellent conversationalists. We met some really nice people who were also staying at the Inn, and had breakfast with them in the mornings and bumped into them all over town. It felt like a lovely, tight-knit community we blended with, with ease. The house is old (150 years), Victorian, with lots of wood, period wall paper and 19th century details. The floors are a little creaky in the best sense of it. You can feel her history walking through the corridors. The hostess at the Inn asked us how it could be improved and I kept telling her it was impeccable. There is literally nothing I would change. If you're visiting Amherst College, or Amherst in general, this is the place to stay. It's charming, cozy, quiet, peaceful, well-kept and run by the friendliest people. Allen and Anne really take their time to care for their guests and make us feel appreciated. I feel warm just writing about it and happy I can always summon the majesty of this house in my memories :) Thanks to Allen and Anne, we had a wonderful and memorable stay. My boyfriend and I had a great stay at the Amherst Inn-- the rest of my family stayed at the Inn at Boltwood for a family wedding, but I couldn't afford the hefty price tag for two nights. We were charmed by the gorgeous historical furnishings and all of the detail. The owners served us breakfast both mornings- made to order omelets. I don't eat eggs, but boyfriend said they were very yummy. Beds were comfortable enough and the rooms were beautiful. I felt very spoiled. We had a wedding nearby, and this was the perfect place to settle in after a long day and drive. Pam welcomed us as if we were coming home. I wooed my parents from Northampton by booking them a room at the beautiful Amherst Inn when they came to visit me in December. They could not stop raving about their weekend stay. The inn has a prime location, right across the street from the Emily Dickinson Museum and Homestead, a short walk to town center and also next door to the delicious Lumber Yard Restaurant. My mom was particularly impressed by how warm and welcoming the inn looked when they pulled up to it the evening of their arrival. With its lit, stained-glass porch and festive holiday wreath, the inn stood out from the rest of the street, glowing invitingly. She could tell from that first moment how much care and thought had been put into running the inn. The innkeepers Ann and Alan confirmed this initial impression with their attentiveness and generosity of spirit. They welcomed them with open arms and told them stories about when I'd stayed at the Allen House during my first visit to Amherst. In a way, it felt like introducing my parents to my adopted Amherst family. My parents stayed in Napoleon's Room, which they called "stately, cozy, and full of beautiful Victorian touches, from the ornately patterned wallpaper to the super-comfortable bed with the matching bedspread and rug." My dad sometimes has trouble sleeping, and he told me that he slept better than he had in a long time on that bed in Napoleon's Room. My mom found the room and bathroom exceptionally clean, which is very important to her. In the morning, my parents enjoyed a hot pancake, egg, and sausage breakfast in the main dining room in the company of other interesting and friendly couples amid Ann's beautiful paintings. My dad enjoyed the local paper and joked with Alan, and my mom chatted with Ann about her paintings. After their visit, my parents told me that they can't wait to stay with Ann and Alan again and their "neighbor," Emily Dickinson. Sorry, Northampton :) Amherst Inn for the win! read more

We really enjoyed our stay at the Amherst Inn. It's a vintage Victorian b&b with a 102-year-old building that has been completely redone with attention to detail and as many original or replica finishings as possible. Bathrooms have completely new fixtures and tile but are vintage style. Everything is spic and span and well cared for. This is the kind of place where there is a parlour and a breakfast room, where you share your table with others, and where you can sit alone in a garden or mix with others in sunrooms, porches, etc. It is immediately across the street from the Emily Dickinson Museum and is right near the center of town, so it is convenient. The outside looks like a haunted mansion and you half expect bats to appear at night; there is lots of ambience. The owners are extremely friendly. The homemade breakfast the next morning, which is included, was delicious and bountiful. There is free Wifi as well. One thing that would have been helpful: I found the Amherst Inn through the internet but was surprised when I couldn't book online. Instead, reservations needed to be made by phone, which made me a little nervous, since I would not have any receipt for the check I mailed and there was no other paper trail. My fears were unrealized, though, since the room was ready when we arrived, and we had a good stay. read more

I found the Inn very clean and the beds were really comfortable as other's have posted. I didn't find the breakfast as wonderful as I've read in other posts. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't to order so the food was cold. A recommendations would be to have the maple syrup heated so it's not straight from the fridge ice cold to pour on your already luke warm pancakes. As far as the price, I was quoted one price but when I arrived I was told another price because of tax (which was still much higher than what added tax would be) and then when leaving, I was quoted another price.....My guess is that they are looking to get a certain rate and they alter the quotes to reach that amount. Also, was not told we had to pay cash until we arrived. Thank goodness I had enough on me in this credit cared/debit card world we are so accustomed to. I had to ask for a receipt which did not show added tax. Work on a hot breakfast and better accounting and I would give this 5 stars because it was charming, clean, friendly, and comfortable. :) read more

My first experience staying in a B&B. The Inn and the decor, cleanliness & parking were all great! Our room was very large and comfy. Pam met us at the door and gave us a very good dinner recommendation for Johnny's down the road. My negatives were that we weren't offered tea, snacks, nor were we invited to sit in the living area. The rooms have no TV's which is fine but I really did not feel that welcome. We were with another couple and would have enjoyed a sitting area. I was disappointed with the la k of hospitality. Breakfast was just okay. Eggs & fruit were very good but the rest was very much like a hotel continental breakfast. Strangely Ann called the couple with us a few hours before we arrived and asked if we had a problem with cats and we do have a few with allergies in our group. We were booked at the Allen House so she did move our reservation to The Amherst Inn. read more

Owner gave our room away, despite a 6 week advance booking and several verbal confirmations that we would be arriving that evening. I booked a one-night stay over the phone with the owner and agreed to pay the overnight rate by check. She called the week before my arrival to confirm that we would be staying. I confirmed that we would be there that weekend. I called the next day to ask about late arrival, as we would be driving to Amherst from some distance. The owner confirmed that we could arrive late, but she asked us to call if we would be arriving past 7pm. I confirmed that we would. Two days later finds us arriving in beautiful Amherst, MA at 5:30pm. We called the owner, who was in the Allen House, the other property managed by the owner. She stated that we had never confirmed our reservation. I reminded her of our previous two conversations. She stated that we arrived too late, and that she had given our room away 20 minutes previously. I reminded her that I warned her of a possible late arrival, and she only asked us to call if we were arriving past 7. No room for us at the inn. I am not sure what happened, whether she truly gave our room away or whether a room was never reserved for us. Another couple at the inn while we called the owner confirmed that they had this experience on many, many of their (attempted) stays with the inn, over 30 in the past year. Fortunately, we found an open room at the Lord Jeff, but we very seriously considered crashing in a common room in one of the dorms, since all of the nearby hotels were booked. Bottom line: If you are relying on a place to stay, don't book this location. read more

Wonderful. I checked in here on a late night whim after partying with friends @ UMass. The owner gave me a small discount, which I thought was awfully nice of her. I was so pleased with the overall atmosphere of this Victorian gem, I thought about asking if they would let me rent a room there to get away for a couple months. If you're a Wi-Fi junkie like me, then you'd enjoy the free Wi-Fi signal throughout the household. The homemade breakfast was scrumdiddlyumptious & finely prepared. Stayed here for a friend's wedding. It's a very quaint little Victorian style inn. I did not have the food however as the wedding party provided brunch. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and soft. Everything was great. My wife and I didn't arrive till 2:00AM but we were greeted warmly the owner and given a quietly guided tour of our room and the common areas. The amount of love, pride and work that he and his wife have invested in this home is obvious. The rooms are immaculate, cozy, cute and unique. A private bath is such a joy in a B&B, especially in the wee hours of the morn after a trans continental flight. It was comforting to see the dedication to cleanliness given to the bathroom. We had an early appointment the next day and had to be up with only 4.5 hours sleep after a very loooooooooooong day. The bed in our room was so comfortable that a 4.5 hour sleep there was equal to 10 hours in any hotel. Breakfast was a freshly cooked buffet and special requests were honored (poached eggs). The pancakes alone are worthy of the stay. We are already planning our return. read more

So my girlfriend and I stayed at this inn while coming up to Northampton for a poetry reading. We found it on booking.com and reserved a room. About 30 minutes after we reserved the room we received a phone call from the host thanking us for choosing them and asking how long until we got there and if we needed anything specific. Upon arrival you notice how beautiful the place is. It's an older Victorian house-- we actually didn't realize it was a bed and breakfast! There's free parking on Webster. We were walking up the stairs and the host came and opened the door and greeted us. She showed us to our room and told us about the place. The room was beautiful and well kept. They offer breakfast and coffee in the morning, and they even have free WiFi. It's also right across the street from the Emily Dickinson museum/your! The only issue I had was the hosts seemed to hover slightly. I would absolutely stay here again. read more

I'm a little late on this review because I kept forgetting to do it. However, I stayed here at the beginning of March while my daughter was interviewing at the university. I ended up having to do paperwork most of the weekend, so I stayed mainly in my room or the parlor. But, Ann and Pam were so gracious that I never felt uncomfortable about "hanging around." Ann and her husband are both warm and inviting, although I only got to speak with Alan on the phone for an extended conversation. Ann was lovely at breakfast. She puts out an amazing spread and still offered to make special orders on request. The place has a nostalgic and comfy feeling. It's within walking distance of the main strip. (Check out MOTI, the Mediterranean restaurant.) If you want to see the Emily Dickinson museum, then it's right across the street. Comfortable and reasonably priced. Check it out. I plan on staying there the next time I'm in Amherst. read more

This review is slightly overdue.This past May we were guests at the Amherst Inn, our fourth time staying with Ann and Alan. Their homemade pancakes with fresh blueberries from Maine and real maple syrup were delicious. They have been a wealth of information about the area and if you like cars, especially old Porsche's and Mercededes,you cannot find someone more knowledgeable than Alan. We booked a room at the Amherst Inn for our daughter's graduation . Ann even told us how to circumvent the mobs attending the graduation ceremony. I just left the most glorious and enjoyable bed and breakfast I ever encountered! The Amherst Inn is a remarkable 19th Century, 150 year old house that will transport you back in time! I am an English teacher, and have been journeying up to Amherst for various Emily Dickinson events. This past weekend was the 188th anniversary of Dickinson's birth; well, directly across the street from the Dickinson's Homestead is the most fabulous Amherst Inn, at 257 Main Street!! What a find was this Inn, hosted by Ann, the innkeeper, and Pam, her assistant, who, together, will make you feel comfortable, well-fed, and never wanting to leave! I have been going up to Amherst for the Emily Dickinson events, but, I would go just to stay at this beautifully appointed, and so well-maintained Inn. I will always request the room I had, directly across the Main St. from the Emily Dickinson Homestead! What lovely folks at the Amherst Inn, and what a glorious opportunity to explore Amherst!! Stayed here during home coming weekend, when rooms anywhere in town were scarce. Someone else had changed their reservation, so we were lucky enough to get a room. If you like brown, dirty, tasteless breakfasts; dark dreary hallways, and an innkeeper that is strange and can be rude, then this is the place for you! We stayed 5 nights, so we had a very good sampling, rather than those who only may stay one night and think it's a great place. Trust me, it's not. The breakfasts are terribly unhealthy. We even witnessed the innkeeper picking from the fruit bowl with her fingers!! This pretty much grossed my partner out so much we had to take our meals elsewhere from then on. The place is also very dusty and could use a good vacuuming. The location is very good, but that matters little when you're creeped out when you come back "home" for the night. The lady in charge will also berate customers about where and how to park. It's so odd and uncomfortable as to ruin what should've been a nice visit. Oh, and correct me if I'm wrong, but is it not 2012? They only take cash! Gee, could this be because they worry people may dispute the charge after they see what they're getting? Hmm. You've been warned. Check out Tripadvisor and click on the negative reviews. And be sure they are from people who have reviewed many places.
