My mom and I have loved coming here during my 4 years at Umass Amherst. It was recommended by my aunt as her son had also been a graduate. What more can you ask for than a clean, comfortable beds to relax and enjoy the rural landscape. Water is hot with great pressure. Breakfast is top notch as everything is made fresh to order by Marie (the owner) and her friendly staff. They make anything from eggs any style, pancakes and French toast out of their homemade bread. Sausages are made at a local store along with their thick slices of bacon. Sheets and linen are freshly washed and smell divine. Overall, cannot rave about this place enough. Our whole family booked this B&B for a family wedding nearby, and it was incredible! Dan (who is hilarious and makes an amazing breakfast; the homemade bread/toast is to die for) and his Mother, Marie (who graciously welcomed us, and make the most amazing jam) , run the place. The chickens help with fresh eggs, and ambiance of course. Rooms are all different, so we all enjoyed peeking into each other's abodes. We would go there again in a heartbeat. read more

Your choices are limited if you want to visit this area and stay in Amherst. I didn't really want to stay on campus at the campus center hotel (very sterile) and the Lord Jeffrey Inn was astronomically expensive. Enter The Black Walnut Inn. My friend said she had stayed here about 15 years ago and it was nice so this is what we booked. It was still extremely expensive ($170-$220 per night) during a fall holiday weekend. The room had a decent sized bathroom and two queen beds. Although it was just me for 2 of the 3 nights. It comes with breakfast but I never got to try it as you have to sign up in advance and planning that far in advance isn't really my thing. I never saw or spoke to anyone who worked there in 3 days. They did come in and clean the room every day and they left a few pieces of Lindt chocolate on the dresser which was nice. The place was pretty clean although there were significant cobwebs in the corners of the room and upper moldings. My only valid complaint is you can hear everything. You can hear people coming and going from their rooms and cars. You can hear the people walking around in the upstairs rooms. On my last evening a group decided to gather at an outdoor table and drink some wine and I could hear their conversation so clearly it was as if I was sitting at the table with them. If you're sensitive to this it could be an issue. Its north of the UMass campus so you're not walking into town or anything but the parking and location are pretty convenient. I'd return. read more

I stayed here last summer for a weekend. I THOUGHT I was there for a family gathering where my fam was meeting my BF. Only to be surprised with a proposal! It was such a joy to stay there and me and my fiancé loved it. They also informed me of their procedure with Covid which put me at ease. The food was home cooked and delicious. I spent two nights at the inn for my birthday and couldn't have had a better weekend. The room was huge and easily fit 4 people with large windows that let in tons of light. (we stayed in uncle bill's room, room #9) The bathroom, shower/tub were in perfect condition as well. Aside from the incredibly friendly staff, the historical value of every room was truly interesting. I'm so grateful to Tricia for showing us the rooms and their details as they were being changed over. As everyone else has mentioned, the breakfast is phenomenal, you can order anything you'd like and it's served piping hot, fresh and with a smile. All of the choices are delicious. This is a jewel of a Bed 'n' Breakfast nestled in the heart of Amherst, just down the Street from Amherst College, UMass Amherst, and the Emily Dickinson Museum & Homestead. Marie welcome us over the phone and our pick up and check-in was so easy. Breakfast is a feast with three or four different seating times; please sign up in advance. Rich, aromatic coffee, juice, and milk plus made-to-order free-range eggs from the lovely hens on site, plus a variety of pancakes, local sausage and bacon; pure maple syrup and local made jams. A beautiful setting and comfortable lodging-- private if you would like quiet, but communal if you would like to chat with other guests. Marie has "regulars" who come from all over the United States just to stay here. Stayed in the Poet's Room which has its own private tub, shower, and sink-- lavender glycerine soap and shampoo provided. Wish I had planned to stay here a couple more days. Highly recommended-- you will not be disappointed by the caring spirit of hospitality towards guests! Many exquisite, "turn of century" touches throughout the beautiful home to give it a sense of atmosphere. There's a wonderful mom 'n' pop Korean/Japanese restaurant across the street which is excellent, too. read more

We rented out the INN for a wedding. What a wonderful place! The owners and staff are very friendly and attentive. The rooms are charming, super clean and inviting. The beds are comfortable, and bathrooms clean and accommodating. We had to schedule breakfasts to accommodate everyone, but it was no problem, even as we all gathered around outside our assigned times to have coffee and chat. The living area was open for waiting. The Black Walnut Inn is a wonderful place to stay in North Amherst, just over a mile or so out of the center of town. It's truly a hidden gem; I lived in Amherst for many years before I ever came across it. The first time I stayed here was for the weekend of my wedding, which took place in Amherst in October of 2006. The owners were kind enough to rent out the Inn to my entire immediate family (it has 10 lovely rooms, each with their own charm). It was a fabulous weekend that we spent there. Ed, the Inn keeper, was wonderfully hospitible, but also kept to himself. He let us have free range of the entire Inn and all of its common areas for us and our guests to gather and celebrate together (we made use of the dining room and living room for our rehearsal dinner). Breakfast was delicious at the Inn and each morning that we were there, we were thoroughly impressed by the selection of foods offered to us. Blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup (of course!), local sausage, bacon and eggs and a variety of beverages were always on the menu. They even sold some of their own homeade jams and cookie mixes on site. The pictures of the rooms on their website almost don't do them justice- they're all very comfortable and cozy rooms with fine linens and rustic decor. Definitely worth the visit! read more

We spent the weekend at the lovely Black Walnut Inn and it exceeded all of my expectations - the Mulberry Room was extraordinarily comfortable and, unlike a lot of B&Bs, this was a totally clean and clutter-free room (so often, a B&B is filled with small knick-knacks, doilies, and bric-a-brac, which I find aesthetically unappealing) -- a very comfortable bed, fast and free wifi, a big bathroom, a small table and two chairs (and yes, those are Lindt truffles waiting for you on the table...!), and the world's smallest closet (warning: if you're staying in Mulberry, limit your hanging garments!). Extra points for an extraordinary breakfast (what I particularly loved is that you can get anything you want - eggs any style, pancakes -- including chocolate chip pancakes, french toast) which always begins with warm, homemade muffins. Add to it a friendly staff, a really great location (a few minutes drive to Amherst center, to Amherst College, and to UMass), and reasonable prices. I will say: the website doesn't do justice to the place, and isn't the easiest to navigate (I had to email to find out, for example, what time check in was). And because the website isn't great, sometimes there can be minor communication glitches. I shifted my reservation forward one day, and received an email confirmation that this was fine, but then the day of my arrival I received a call indicating that I hadn't shown up for my reservation. As I was leaving, one of the young women who works there mentioned some website modernization, so hopefully that will make reservations easier, and offer guests all the basic info they need. read more

I stayed here for 3 nights last week and it was absolutely perfect! I stayed in the Mulberry Room on the second floor. The bed was warm and comfy, and the room was nice and quiet. I slept great, and then had a nice hot shower in the morning. The water pressure was fantastic! In the morning I was served breakfast by Marie, one of the owners. I was so glad to be there 3 mornings so I could try everything! I had the bacon and the sausage, which are both from local sources, and they were wonderful. My final morning I had blueberry pancakes. In the summer my husband and I go on an extended bike trip from CT to NH and we stay at the Black Walnut Inn. After 10 hours on the road this place has been the perfect place to rest. Upon arrival Marie has always greeted us with a warm smile and fresh baked goods. The rooms are very spacious, the bedding comfortable and the breakfast is outstanding! We have stayed in The Peterson Room and also The Mulberry Room. It's is certainly on of the highlights of our trip. We are already looking forward to booking again for this coming summer. read more

I stayed three nights for a recent work conference at UMass, and this was the ideal place to be! It was quiet with all the amenities I needed, and it only took me about 5 minutes to get to the campus site (others in other hotels were stuck in lots of traffic). You can order breakfast (pancakes, eggs any style, sausage, etc.) which is more than other B&Bs offer, and the rooms are spacious. My bed in the Norwottuck room was comfortable. Cable was available on a flat screen tv (also more than other B&Bs offer). I only wish there was just a little more seating in case there is a rush of people at one tie, which there just happened to be. Otherwise, it is a great setup to meet the fellow guests. I highly recommend this place and would return for work or pleasure! read more

This little B and B is adorable and amazingly quaint! The rooms are really cute and spotless...In the lobby there were these tasty home baked ginger cookies to welcome us. For breakfast we were treated to a fresh home cooked meal. The blueberry pancakes were off the charts perfect. The chef does something super different that I love which is butter and grill muffins...it really brings the flavor out!!! The bacon was crisp and local. Also, the bread was baked in house and scrumptious...I can't say enough good things...check it out for yourself if you are in town! BTW the owners dogs Sparky and Nutmeg are so sweet! read more

The rating should be 3.5 but I can't do that. The brick front of the building pictured in photos is impressive the the rooms are not what I thought of when I think of an inn i.e. inside a historic building - they are in a converted carriage house that looks like a motel frankly. It is at a noisy intersection, but they have removed the windows from the noisiest side and sound-proofed it. It was relatively quiet with the windows closed but stuffy in that there was no air conditioning in our room (Webster Room). The room photos are impressive and the rooms generally look like them albeit with some cheaper furniture touches, but very clean. The breakfast was amazing and the beds VERY comfortable. Maybe part of my problem is that I'd stayed the night before at the Equinox Resort in Vermont and only paid $10 more for that room (albeit plus a resort fee). read more

This little breakfast is so quaint with New England charm. We stayed here for a wedding and it was exactly what we were looking for. The staff was friendly and the main area of the home had very cute touches... from an old phone to wood burning stove in front of the fireplace. Our room was perfect and had the comforts that you needed-- an ironing board, a bathrobe and even slippers! Our room had a sink which was unconventional at first, but turned out to be perfect for brushing teeth or grabbing a glass of water in the middle of the night. Breakfast was amazing. Best B&B we've ever stayed in. The staff and accommodations at the Black Walnut Inn were well above my expectations since the first time I stayed there over 10 years ago. Since then, the Inn has become our favorite place to stay when traveling in New England. The Inn is welcoming, with period furniture and antiques, and I love waking up to the smell of their coffee in the morning, along with the fresh muffins, pies, and a most delectable made-to-order breakfast (thank you Marie & Rachel). The chatter around the breakfast table is friendly and entertaining, and almost always has other repeat guests at the table. The rooms are different sizes, and we usually opt for one of the cozier rooms like the Peterson or Mulberry rooms. We have stayed in the larger suites as well and love to hear that they are named after family and friends. Uncle Bill's room is also a favorite. Since we travel frequently, we rely on consistently great accommodations, and the Inn has never disappointed us. The beds and pillows are very comfortable (even to my fussy husband), and the rooms and bath are always immaculate, whether we are there for a weekend or a for a whole week. I recommend the Inn to all of my friends headed in that direction. read more
