We were lucky to get in because we arrived right when they opened, definitely suggest a reservation if you want a spot. One-off Italian meals in the EU - 1 of 2…read more By one-off, I mean that it was a situation where you were just passing through. Why was I passing through Seville? Well, it's another way to get to the Algarve in Portugal by a nicely priced and comfortable enough motor coach ride if you couldn't find a cheap enough air ticket to Lisbon from Italy. I was walking down the street somewhere in between a strip of hotels and Seville's impressive Santa Justa train station and Montolivo caught my eye. First, I'll go with the positive things. It's very nice inside. The other is that the employees were friendly. Like others have said, they don't come around much and this was lunch and it wasn't at all busy, but when they did, they were reasonably on point. Finally, the prices were fair for their lunch offerings. So far, it sounds like everything was going fairly well. I ordered a plate of lasagna and a Sprite. As soon as the lasagna arrived, something didn't sit with me. It looked very upright, almost like a rectangular pastry slice, and its appearance and coloring were atypical. As I started to eat this lasagna, it did not taste good at all. It was rather tasteless. I'm giving them a 4 for all the other parts of the experience but the food was a 1 and that's what governs. I went into Montolivo with an open mind. That's because I have had some incredible Italian food in the Southern Cone (Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile) but that could be that they are very steeped in being part of the Italian diaspora. I still dream about a cheap and delicious cannelloni lunch special near the main station in Vina del Mar, Chile (the resort beach city west of inland Santiago de Chile, the capital). It rivaled anything I've eaten in Italy. I've also been served good pasta dishes at simple diners in Quebec. That said, located but a low cost 2-hour Ryanair flight from Italy, you'd think the Spaniards could muster up the know-how to cook decent Italian food. I am a little surprised by some glowing reviews. It could be that Americans and Spaniards like anything put forth to them as being Italian food. It could be that I didn't order some other things that they might have prepared better. Just like there are Italian eateries in America that are not Italian, but Italian-American, it could be that this is a Spanish restaurant that serves up how they like to put together Italian dishes. I did not like my meal at Seville's Montolivo.

I liked everything, esp the eggplant with sweet sauce, and the fries with beef and gravy. We had vegetarians in our group so I don't know what they ate instead, but it seems they have plenty of options for all food needs. I would go back if I get to Seville again. Delicious Italian - no matter your dietary restrictions!…read more I came here after reading reviews and seeing from the menu that they accommodate dietary restrictions. I have to be gluten-free and dairy-free, but I still had a good meal here! Their menu is available in Spanish or English and they use symbols to denote vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free. I'm not sure why it's not marked on the menu, but I'd seen a review that their gnocchi is the gluten-free pasta option, so I asked about it when we got there. If you're gluten-free, mention it and ask about gluten-free gnocchi (not sure if all their gnocchi are gluten-free or if it's different). They have two vegan pasta options and three gnocchis, but they're good so if you have any dietary restrictions I'm sure you'll still enjoy what you have here. What we ordered: -Mediterranean Salad: Spring mix with tomato, raisins, and Gorgonzola (subbed vegan feta - I think they use Violife which is good) with a red pepper vinaigrette. It had an interesting mix of flavors, but I would've preferred the tomatoes to be incorporated into the salad (I think it was more form over function), possibly using a San Marzano tomato sliced in halves would've been better. Pine nuts and or bits of olive could've complemented the flavor too. It was nice to have something fresh to go with the meal. The dressing was light but nice and tangy. It was decently large so we shared it as a side salad for both (large for a side for one). -Gnocchi Gorgonzola: This is what my mom ordered, so it isn't dairy-free, but she enjoyed it! -Gnocchi Pesto Pugliese: I ordered this. It's vegan and gluten-free (I said gluten-free gnocchi, but again, not sure if all the gnocchi is gluten-free or it was different). The gnocchi was doughy but not too mushy and the sauce was light with little bits of crushed almond and pine nuts throughout. Sort of like a sundried tomato pesto. It was good and I was happy to have an option, but it was a bit simple so I added some of the vegan feta from our salad and bits of the complementary olives to it to add more flavor. I think it could have used the extra cheese, larger bits of nut to add more texture, or Italian sausage crumbles (obviously this wouldn't be vegan, but if I were to remake the dish at home). You're just missing something crispy and textured or a richness. If you're dairy-free or vegan and need an option, it's nice to have this. The gnocchis were generous and we each took home half our portion as leftovers. If I didn't have dietary restrictions, we could've shared one along with the salad. They have a good selection of Spanish wines available by glass or bottle. We didn't have a reservation but were seated immediately. The staff was very nice and it was a nice environment.

Fairly small place -- they have three locations in Seville I was told by the owner who I met on the way out. I love that they can do half portions of their pasta so you can try and share. We LOVED the chive pesto risotto - very different but amazing. Rigatoni Amatriana also excellent. Star of the show was the PIZZA. Voted top 50 in all of Europe and I see why. Quality sauce, cheese, and that magical CRUST! Probably the best pizza I've ever had including New York and Italy. And the bill at the end of the night is way cheaper than you'd expect. I started with the Carpaccio followed by the Pizza Longaniza de Graus and a sparkling mineral water. Only one waitress /barmaid was working at that moment in time (9pm) but she copped. The Carpaccio was rather tasteless, which was a real shame. Then the Pizza Longaniza dough was as thin as a water biscuit and its rim was carbonised and crumbling to the touch. On top of that the pizza aftertaste was sweetish AKA that should not be happening. It looks that the tomato sauce and a generous and wrong sugar overdose were the culprits. Funnily enough, half way through the service at 9:30 pm a waiter and another waitress appeared from thin air, or actually from the contiguous Meliá Hotel, to help the, until there, multitasking lady. Wi-Fi was super strong. Wouldn't go back unless their pizzaiolo/pizza "chef" gets a crash course of "How to make a proper Italian Pizza" starting from Lesson 1.0.1. There are good bars and restaurants in the area, but unfortunately this is not one of them.
