Today was my 55th birthday and I was kind of flying solo. I did take the day off work, but other than that everyone around me had plans. I decided to treat myself. Amruth took over a space that used to be one of my favorite Mexican restaurants (Mazatlan) not far from where I live. I've been wanting to get there, but just hadn't made it yet. My birthday was a perfect excuse. Parking isn't an issue. It's in a small strip of businesses along Swanson and the lot is pretty big. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. I was shown to a table; my host also ended up being my server. The interior isn't fancy. The seating is a combination of booths and low top tables and chairs. The main seating is to the Right of the front counter as you enter. To the Left is a small area with a bar they are using for overflow and as a party room space. My server took my drink order and brought a small carafe of water to my table. I ordered the Alfredo chicken 65 pasta (medium spice level) and that comes with garlic naan. It seemed a little unconventional... Pasta with Indian food...? But it's in their Amruth Specialty section and they wouldn't put something on on the Specialty menu if it wasn't good... Right? I also ordered a Masala chai. The pasta dish was served over a penne style pasta. Kind of a take on a cajun pasta with an Indian twist. Very good! I'd order this again and again...and again. The naan was fresh and tasted great too! Chicken 65 is something I've ordered as a appetizer many times so I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting. Interesting combination with the pasta and creme sauce... I will say I'm very glad I didn't order it at the hot spice level...the medium was lighting me up a little. And I don't shy away from heat... Lol My server checked on me every now and then and we chatted a little. I'd mentioned the spots I normally go to for lunch and their buffets. At Amruth they have an all you can eat dosa special on Thursdays (don't quote me on that, but I think that's what I read...call them and ask about it) and a buffet on Sundays. The Sunday buffet I am sure on... When we were talking he mentioned they offer 25-30 items on their buffet v. the 10 or so that other restaurants seem to offer. We decided to stop in on a Friday night for dinner. We were warmly greeted and given water bottles and menus. The menu is very impressive and extensive. There are no descriptions on the menu, but thankfully we've had Indian food before so we kinda knew some of the words based on dishes we've tried before. We started off with the veg samosas for appetizers. As our main dishes we splurged and ordered garlic naan, butter chicken, aloo gobi masala (curry cauliflower), saag chicken curry (spinach and chicken), chana masala (chick peas). Each entree came with white rice. Everything tasted delicious and authentically Indian. I also really like that their naan is really thin so that I can eat it and not be filled up on it. We couldn't think of a place to go on a Friday night. My dining companion thought we should do Indian. Neither one of us had really had true Indian food. The dining companion picked Amruth. We were greeted as soon as we entered and taken to a table. I asked the waiter how long they had been open. They have only been open about 3 months. I had no idea they were there. The staff were very friendly and patient with us as we didn't know what most of the menu was. They have a very large menu. My only negative is that I wish there were pictures of the items, even if they were on a qr code. The table next to us was very kind. We watched them bring a plate over and heard us say we wish we knew what that was. The resturant does have a buffet on Thursday nights. We shared the Chilli garlic Naan bread. It was delicious. It had a small kick. I had the chicken hot and sour soup medium spice. It was good. My dining companion had one of the goat dishes (SPICY-you get to pick) his goat came with a bowl of rice. Upon a second visit, this restaurant does not disappoint. Breads, entrees and lassi's are well prepared and presented. Service is attentive and friendly. This may be the best Indian restaurant in town. Slight negatives is the tv sound which is a tad distraction as it's too high. It would also be helpful to have some description of the entrees. Found by accident. Everything we ordered was great! Samosas, matar panir, naan and a mango lassi. Painir was in huge chunks and sauce was fabulous. Mild spice is more like medium so beware! Rice, fluffy and moist, naan was perfect and the lassi was huge. We finished with chai - not sweet but full of flavor. Service was prompt and courteous and gracious. The TV had Bollywood dancing and music videos which were fun to watch. Of all the Indian restaurants in Iowa we have tried, this is a new favorite. Walked in for lunch around 11:45 and nobody was there. Maybe a little early? Had the buffet of about 10 food items set right in front of the door. The best part of the lunch was the staff, very friendly, constantly checking if food was ok, and the spice levels were good. Which they were. I enjoyed the food. Besides the picture, they also had a hot soup, a chicken and veggie biryani's and a paneer masala. For me, the fish curry stood out, because I'd never had it at any of the other Indian buffets. The tandoori chicken was about a 7/10, less spice, but did like they didn't feel the need to die it red. I wish they a couple more vegetable option, like cauliflower or green bean dishes. I was asked if I want to try a "lemonade" like drink and said sure I'll try it. Basically a sprite, then got charged an extra $4. I just figured it would be included since he came half way through my meal and asked if I'd like to try it. Wouldn't have gotten if I'd known what it was. Watch out Indian food lovers, there is a new boss in town! We were headed towards Front Row for steak night tonight, but Amruth Indian restaurant caught our eye and we decided to give it a whirl. So glad we did; 5's all around! Yerra Tokku Shrimp appetizer: dang, this was spicyyy ! We LOVE spicy and we very much enjoyed this dish. I wouldn't really consider this an appetizer, though, but I would definitely order this again as a meal. It's just not very "appetizery" IMO. Aandhra Chicken Curry (bone in): a very mild dish. We enjoyed this one, but after the spicy appetizer above, this one almost seemed bland, at first. Trust me, it's not; it's just that our mouths were still on fire from the above mentioned appetizer. Chettinad Goat: I like goat because it's slightly less fatty than lamb, in my experience. It was delicious. Chili/garlic and butter na'ans were delicious. Parotta: my favorite item of the night was the PAROTTA "flaky ribbon pancake". It took me back to my childhood, and I'll admit I had a moment of . My grandma handmade scallion pancakes (葱油饼). It's different than the Korean version (pajeon), which is much chewier and not flaky. I've never seen any other culture have a similar pancake to 葱油饼. It's both chewy and flaky at the same time (think like a croissant is both flaky and chewy). It's really hard to describe unless you've had it before. I initially saw this menu item, but when I googled an image, the pancake was torn apart and stir fried with a protein and gravy. That's not what I was looking for, so I opted to just get Parotta as a side. And then I confirmed with our wonderful server that it actually comes as a whole pancake and not torn apart like the Parotta entrees. I knew right away, when she set it down, that this was very similar to my grandma's scallion pancakes. When I picked it up and started pulling it apart, it flaked the exact same way. I am definitely going back just for this side item. If you have ever had 葱油饼, you know what I am talking about. Kheer rice pudding dessert: you have to try this if you like hot rice pudding! It was literally the perfect end to an amazing dinner! The rice pudding had raisins, cinnamon and, mostly, just sweet, warm milk and rice...it was excellent! The two of us did not leave a drop. Service and food were a little slow, but they have only been open for a week, and this is their first family restaurant (brother/sister + their spouses). Almost every table was full by the time we left, and all were Indian families except us (which I take to be a positive!). I definitely think this restaurant needs to print a different style menu. I had to Google a majority of the items, simply because I didn't know what half the names were. The menu is kind of all over the place, and a little hard to follow. Thankfully, I was waiting for someone else so I had some time on my hands. But I definitely could see people being overwhelmed by this menu and not knowing what to order. We were given something to snack on, I think it's called papad w/ a chutney, but I'm not sure ‍ We saw an adjacent table order several Dosa, and they looked absolutely delicious. I can only describe it as an oversized, paper thin crêpe, that you tear apart with your fingers and dip in the masala that's in the center of the pancake. It almost looks like a blown up burrito, but I don't even know how to describe the Dosas I saw, and I'm probably butchering the description. Dosa will be at the top of my list to try next time, it looked delicious! The poor Grandma at the "Dosa" table was laughing at me gawking, I couldn't stop staring (and possibly drooling...don't judge!)! Honestly, I have like 10 things I want to go back and try here. A friend and I went here to Amruth for our Saturday night out. We got seated quickly, and the server was friendly. Therre were two plastic bottles of water on the table, and some menus. One, a special menu, had some handwritten stuff on there like it had been used by a previous patron. But right away the server was there, and offered us any ice or glasses for the water, which we did request. I ordered some garlic Naan bread as an appetizer, and a main chicken-rice fry dish, can't recall what it was. Bot the bread and my main course were delicious. Hot, flavorful, just the right amount of spiciness. My friend ordered the same dish I did, with a higher level of "hot" or spiciness. He was happy with his too. We had ample portions, and both requested cartons to take the rest home. The server quickly complied. All of the staff was warm and friendly. So the food and service were both exemplary. It was just that initial impression made with the plastic water bottles, and scribbled-on menu, that made us wonder a bit at first. Advice to restaurant: Have glass glasses out, and serve chilled water. That would match the rest of the good or fine-dining experience that we enjoyed. A really wide selection of menu items too. BEST INDIAN FOOD IN WDM!! My wife and I are still new to Indian food and figuring things out. We have tried 3 or 4 places around WDM. None of them have been bad, but Amruth was hands down the best. The food was great! The service was incredibly friendly and the atmosphere was inviting. The restaurant itself was clean and bright with an authentic feel. So far, the best Indian food we've had. Been living here in Des Moines for a couple of years. DSM may lack in certain restaurant offerings (where the hell is an Italian restaurant that serves veal?!...OK, that is another issue), but Des Moines does have several excellent choices for Indian cuisine. Amruth opened this year and they deserve recognition! Very friendly people here, they will walk you through their impressive menu if you are looking to try something different, as again, it is a large selection they offer. They have a wonderful selection of lamb and goat dishes, and everything else we have had in our half dozen visits has been marvelous. I am an Indian food fanatic and I think this restaurant offers the best food in the Des Moines- West Des Moines area. The price is reasonable and competitive to others around. New restaurant, the interior is decent but the food is amazing both for white folks and Indian folks. They offer a variety of Indian food from biryanis to curry's to South Indian to North Indian food.. It appears that they have really put a lot of effort in the recipes for their food.
