Awesome food! I go here with the same friend so we keep a running list of what we like. LOL! Yesterday we had our staple of Samosa, always good. It comes with a green dipping sauce that is enhances the flavor. For our entrees we had our usual, Chicken Tikka - also always good! Then, at the recommendation of our waiter, we tried the Chicken Korma. Oh my goodness! Our new favorite. Both dishes are served with white rice and we have to Naan (garlic is best) to sop it all up. Despite living in Iowa pretty much all of my life I'm still one to stay in on cold nights... Indian food sounded good. It's been a while. I used mytown2go to place an order last night so I didn't have to leave my couch. I've never visited Spice Pot before and the reviews I'd read online seemed all over the board. I ordered chicken tikka masala (medium heat), chili cheese naan, and chicken dum biryani (medium heat). My total ran just under $27 before fees and my driver's tip. The fundamental taste of the food was really good. The sauce on the chicken tikka masala was rich and flavorful. The elements in the biryani complimented one another from the chicken, to the rice, onion, the lime, spices, and the mint. Overall I was happy with the food... That being said... I'd call both dishes I received mild...rather than medium. I assumed the biryani would be bone-in... However the pieces of chicken appear to have been taken apart with a cleaver and there were shards of bone that made the dish less than desirable for me... It might be authentic...but it's not for me. The naan... Very good, but once again it lacked the heat I'd expect from something with visible chunks of chili peppers embedded in it. I'd order from Spice Pot again...or stop in for dine-in...but I'd adjust my order a little from this experience. Try some other dishes on the menu... And I'd up my spice level to "hot"... I don't consider myself a chili-head; I like a heat level that is noticeable, but isn't overpowering. About mytown2go... This is the second time I've used them. The app is easy to use. Both times the service has probably left me more impressed than the food I received. I placed my order at 614 pm and it was delivered at around 647 pm (estimated time was one hour...714 pm). My driver was a Pleasant Hill school teacher who delivers as a part-time job. He was personable, polite, and provided excellent service. A really nice guy. He said he hasn't been delivering long. We stumbled upon this place as every other Indian place near by was closed. It was pretty popular with a lot of people doing order pickups. There isn't a ton of seating as they have the tables socially distanced. The decor is pretty old, but that doesn't bother me if the food is great and the food was amazing! The garlic naan is the best I've had...and I eat a lot of Indian food. It did take quite a while to order, for our food to arrive and for us to pay. They definitely didn't have enough staff. I think there were only 2 of them. They were kind and polite and he was running around like crazy serving and attending to everyone. Normally I would give less stars for that, but with everyone short staffed these days, I give props to how hard they were working and what a kind attitude he had. I've tried many DSM Indian restaurants for lunch when I'm running around, and this place is the BEST!! The chicken in the tikka masala is so tender. My husband got the chicken kabobs today and they were so juicy! They were kind of like a chicken meatball. Their mint sauce is awesome. Definitely get the chicken samosas. read more

Honestly, I hate to do this as I have always loved their takeout. But we dined in, and wow... they have let the place go. COVID is probably to blame for the staffing issues (server was also bartender and also cook), so wait time wasn't our issue. I went into the bathroom and I'm not being dramatic when I say it was INFESTED with bugs. Cockroaches, spiders, ants, moths... it was disgusting. I don't think I'll be eating here ever again unless they do a serious cleaning. read more

Veg Biryani is mix of masala and uncooked vegetables. Onion Uthappam had some foul taste and I am not sure how this restaurant even passes any food inspection. We were a party of two. I stopped in hoping the buffet was available but due to covid we could only order off the menu. Surprisingly the food was even better! Maybe it's because we waited many months to come back. But we tried garlic naan and it was so much more delicious than buffet naan! The chicken tandoori came out on a sizzling plate. Omg it was so good and the onions too. This is a new restaurant which I believe used to be the Taj Mahal. I purchased food from the buffet. I selected every vegetarian item available and the food was rich, but delish! Everything was amazing. I selected Dal, Paneer Korma, a green sauteed vegetable dish, carrot rice, steamed rice, and naan. I also had a mashed dessert that was orange in color. I will definitely be back. I do wish they served chili peppers on the buffet with the raw onions because I enjoy spicy peppers with my food. I was able to purchase a lunch buffet to go. They don't weigh by the pound, but instead just charge $9.99 for the meal. He offered me two boxes, but I only wanted one. I'm not sure if they give you 2 boxes per person to go. I'll have to ask next time. Great news! The gentleman let let me know I can order online, and they deliver to Johnston, Grimes, Waukee . . . Not just close to their restaurant. I placed an order for takeout- a small order with some chicken korma, rice, and naan. The flavor of the korma was great, and the chicken was nice and tender. The naan was warm and soft (mostly), with the exception of some burnt thin spots, though I'm sure this is natural as it's cooked in a tandoori oven. The rice, however, was not basmati rice, as I expected from previous visits here. It was plain white rice. I was kind of disappointed about that, as I love a good side of basmati rice. But I'll chalk it up to possibly being a supply issue? I'll probably try Spice Pot again in the future to see whether this was the case. read more

I don't think I can eat Indian food again. I was up all night with horrible stomach pains after eating this food. I have never had food poisoning like this in my life. Do not eat here. Also, I am allergic to cilantro, and requested the cilantro not be added to the dishes. I later found out that they cilantro is cooked into the sauce. I wasn't notified of this, and this is most likely why I got sick. I cannot rule out food poisoning as I haven't had a reaction like this to cilantro, but it could have just been an allergic reaction. Regardless, it's not good. read more

shitty service and food was gross, I'm from Texas visiting DM and unfortunately me and 3 year old son went to eat there and ordered some nuggets from kids menu for my son before I go thru the menu and order my food, this Mexican dude brought the oil soaked nuggets lit dripping oil so I told him that oil is dripping and instead of making the nuggets right he said it's fried in oil and supposed to be like this (idiot is changing the concept of nuggets) and me and my son can leave. I had the lunch buffet. I was low in battery so I didn't take photos but there are plenty on the site. There were a lot of vegetarian options, like a paneer korma, which was my first time having it and it was really good. There were 2 chicken options and the server said there are more meat options on the weekends, including goat. The server was very friendly and checked on us often to refill our water and take away plates. The space is colorful and cozy but small enough that you will smell like food when you leave. It wasn't the largest Indian buffet in town but it was adequate and the food had great flavors. I missed the mango lassi found at most buffets. read more

Giving Spice Pot 1 star is being generous. The service was laughably bad, and the food was terrible and gave us stomach problems. I really wanted Spice Pot to be a hit because there is a lack of good Indian restaurants in Des Moines. Unfortunately, this place is yet another let-down. As soon as our group of 4 walked in, the waiter (young Indian man with glasses) was insistent about where he wanted us to sit, even though the place was almost empty. Another waiter quickly came by to take our drinks order, only to realize that we have no menus. He left to summon the first waiter, who came back with 3 menus even though there were 4 of us present. While taking our order, the waiter reminded us that we should leave all of our used plates in one spot so that he can collect them more easily. I'm all about cleaning up after myself, but not when I'm paying someone to do it. Our waiter informed us that their dishes have three spice levels: mild, medium, and spicy. My wife ordered a curry at spicy level. Apparently, he didn't hear her, and asked her to specify the spice level in a condescending tone of voice. The food arrived pretty quickly. We ordered Samosa and Gobi Manchurian as our appetizers. For the main course, we ordered Malai Kofta, a Paneer curry, garlic naan, and mango lassi. The food arrived quickly. The appetizers were passable, but the curries were dismal. Especially, at the prices they charge. I've had better microwaveable curry than what we were served. The naan was decent in that they used real chunks of garlic in it, instead of dehydrated minced garlic like most Indian restaurants. At the end, the waiter came back to get our plates and ordered me to help him gather a couple of the used plates (without a single please or thank you). After I helped him do his job, he asked what we wanted to do with the remaining food. I figured some co-workers might enjoy the leftovers, so we asked for boxes. To our surprise, the waiter laughed out loud at our request, then looked at our food for a few seconds and left to get boxes. My wife cracked a joke that he was laughing because we are taking this terrible food home with us. I ordered the samosas, apollo shrimp, chicken tikka masala, butter naan and garlic naan. The samosas with the mint and chutney sauce....omg the best! I have no idea what I got for the shrimp but it definitely wasn't what was pictured on the yelp eat app. I took two bites and couldn't eat it. The tikka masala was good and the garlic naan was good. But the butter naan was bland. It also got to me 25 minutes later then the yelp eats app told me it was going to take. read more

I went there today to try it bc everons has been saying it good and everything as soon as I went in there the place stinks like shitttt and the floors was really dirty the Mexican dude was cool he didn't sound mean or nothing we had to wait like 3 mins and when we got the food and got back home the chicken tasted like shit and had been left out for hours and hours and like only the mango lassi's were good but the rest was soggie with the oil and everything it was so horrible I'm sorry but I don't recommend going there at ALL!!!!! read more

Took time to ensure the dishes were to our liking even with the kids. The ground lamb curry was the best! The chicken koorma was a close second. The naan was fresh and very garlicky! This is our new favorite Indian restaurant in town. We will be back soon! read more

I ordered Chicken Korma (specified mild) and butter naan.the korma was too spicy - not mild at all, the sauce was thin and did not have that richness I've had from other places around town. The butter naan was soaked in butter and very limp and tasteless. This place doesn't come close to the wonderful food from Paradise Biryani Pointe or Persia Biryani. read more

This is probably one of the best Indian food place in the Iowa region. If you are looking for Indo-Chinese Hyderabadi style noodles or Chicken Manchuria this is the place to go. They have some awesome Hyderabadi style chicken biryani too. These guys have some of the best Naan's too. They have some good people who are courteous and kind, making the service special. read more

This is the second visit, first review. I had a biryani which seems to be a specialty dish. It was fine. However it was intentionally "dry" as that is typical for the dish. My dining companion had an entree that was in a suave and it was very good. The one suggestion I would make is for the menu to be more descriptive of the dishes. Plus get the paper "specials" out from under the glass tabletop for readability. The breads are very good and the mango lassi is pretty tasty also. Fine food, good # of entree varieties. read more

This place is awesome. This new incarnation seems to be a lot busier than the previous restaurant that was here. My favorite thing we tried was gutti vankaya (sp?), a peanut-eggplant dish. I've had that before and never actually liked it, so that in and of itself is impressive. Decor is comfortable and service was good. It's not a fancy place, but the atmosphere is pleasant with warm colors and attractive pictures. Definitely family friendly. It's also very vegetarian/vegan friendly. They marked a dozen or more things on the menu that could be made vegan. All in all, a good experience and we'll be back. read more
