I've taken the river runner from KC to STL several times. No issues on any of my trips. Sure, it takes a bit longer than driving, but I think it's worth it. The conductors are professional and friendly. The wi-fi works well. They do have a lounge car too. read more

I am stuck over an hour waiting for a train delayed by an hour and 15 mins. How did that happen? The charter bus arrived on time to Peoria Illinois as did I. He gets us to Indianapolis 50 mins early to the bus/ train station. I called Amtrak on the phone spoke to their employee who told me my option is to wait or change to another train that would not leave until 10am after taking 2 buses. I asked if she was able to upgrade me in anyway (ex: to business class or a roomette). She said no my only options were previously stated. Why am I writing this review? To basically put them on notice of their poor customer service. When I got here I watched a food vendor argue with a woman for being 10cent short for an item that never touched her hand. That symbolizes it all. I was hoping this would be a good trip. read more

Basically, we told Amtrak my son was disabled and he couldn't walk, and after telling us we'd get a discount, Amtrak sold us a ticket for an upstairs seat. My son had to walk upstairs! They should have told me the seats were upstairs and they didn't communicate that! I have never ridden Amtrak before so when I called to order tickets, I told them my son is in a wheelchair so they gave us a "disability discount"; a disability discount and accessible seats were incompatible purchases! When we got to the train, I was informed his ticket was coach only (upstairs) and that it was not an accessible seat because we got the discount. Consequently, my son was told he had no other option but to walk upstairs, with the railing on the right (which is his affected side). With help, he made it, and of course the bathrooms were downstairs. In addition, we had "assistance going to the platform" and when we got there the red cap immediately placed his wheelchair in the train and he had to walk into the train. To make matters worse, we spent 4 hours in the station on the train waiting for a repair. Very disappointed! read more

My 4th cross-country Amtrak journey: first rate experience. Freedom to roam, decent food, breathtaking scenery, good selection of snacks, and every car has comfortable, roomy, reclining seats. Let's talk value: $300 for 2,000 miles (3,218 km) trip. Much less if booked in advance, and still 1/3 the cost of airfare. Greyhound bus fares are roughly same, but then you deal with freeway traffic, bad weather, and elbow to elbow seating. Brand new ST. LOUIS GATEWAY CENTER is such a great facility! Safe, clean, and staffed by helpful and knowledgeable locals. As always, Amtrak's greatest strength is its staff members. Porters, agents, conductors, engineers, vendors, and maintenance staff are invariably kind, helpful, and professional. Amtrak makes travel a memorable experience. read more

Amtrak is a safe and budget friendly mode of transportation that has been around for many years. I wish they would upgrade the inside of the trains however that would increase the rates making it less accessible to some people. St Louis Station Parking Long-term parking is the most uncomfortable experience ever. It's located two blocks from the station in a secluded area. You don't feel safe and I'm always terrified walking to and from this location. The lot is fenced and secure it's the walk that's horrifying. To enter the parking lot you swipe a credit card. You will not receive a ticket. Before you leave the parking lot you must grab a ticket by the exit. That ticket includes a code for you to get back into the parking lot. When you return from your trip, use the code to unlock the gate to the parking lot. At the exit, swipe the same credit card you used to get in. Your fare will show on the screen. Press a button to approve payment. I chose a business class seat on the train but my experience was partly ruined by the employee at the Amtrak counter. This lady has a horrible attitude. There's a lounge for business class guests and it requires a code to unlock the door. I asked will sometime come get us from the lounge. She said there's a speaker in there and you will hear the announcement. I said I'm asking because last time I was here the speaker wasn't working and they forgot about us. She gave me the code and said you know where it is. I said I don't. She said I thought you've been here before in a rude tone. I said that was years ago. She said, "Well it hasn't moved!" real sarcastically. I had to say again that was a long time ago. As I walked away I said ma'am you need to adjust your attitude. This experience was horrible. I never found the lounge and did not feel comfortable interacting with her again. The business class seats on the train are nice and roomy and they recline. There's a bathroom in this section and business class seats are very close to the cafe. You get one complimentary drink that never happened departing St Louis. There's a row of single seats which is awesome for solo riders. Chicago Beautiful, modern station. Huge lounge for business class that includes free snacks and drinks, tvs and comfortable seating. No code needed to enter. There's a security guard in the room. There also a room to store your luggage. When we got seated on the train the young lady from the cafe announced we get a free complimentary beverage. She came to each row and took our order. St Louis, do better. read more

Disappointed by Recent Experience, Though Past Trips Were Fine I've used Amtrak several times before, and generally, my trips have been okay. For example, on a previous trip in Chicago, the staff were helpful in getting me on a new train after I missed mine. That's why this recent experience at St. Louis was so frustrating. The train was delayed, which I understand happens, but Amtrak provided absolutely no communication. No emails, no app updates, no announcements, and no staff at the station to answer questions. The ticket windows were closed, and there wasn't even a TV screen with departure info. Calling customer support meant a 30-minute hold, only to be told they had no information. After boarding, the onboard computer failed just past Alton, IL, and although the train appears to be "on" again, we're still stuck 45 mins later. Texting support was useless--automated replies and agents with no answers. Boarding was smooth, but that was the only bright spot. To add insult to injury, I couldn't even submit feedback on their website because of an error message--ironic, given the communication failures. I hope Amtrak learns from this. They can do better, as I've seen before, but this experience left me stranded and frustrated. If you rely on timely updates and good communication, be prepared for disappointment. Update 1: We were still stuck an hour later, rolling slowly back and forth maybe a mile or so. I had added a star for the staff's patience and professionalism--they answered questions as best they could (with no real support from Amtrak corporate, it seemed). I even watched a fellow passenger dress down a car attendant, and he handled it with grace and professionalism. Not that he should have had to, but I hoped Amtrak at least valued their frontline people. Update 2: I'm now taking that extra star back. We've been stuck since 12:30 p.m. (it's now almost 3:30 p.m.), and only now are they finally bringing a "sister train" for us to board, which will continue the route to Chicago. This is something you'd expect Amtrak, as a transit operator for however many decades, to coordinate much sooner. About an hour ago, I tried messaging their "text with us" line; after providing my name and reservation number, I got a "one moment please" reply--and nothing since. No updates, no information, nothing. This is a complete failure in communication and contingency planning. How can I even trust Amtrak again after this? read more

I have been using Amtrak to take my grandsons back home to Lee's Summitt, MO from Kirkwood, MO for at least five years. I always booked Business class because the train car was smaller. It held 19 passengers. The seats reclined, had a foot rest, were bigger in size and had more padding. This year I booked Business class again for a trip the first part of July. I was surprised to find that the Business class car was as big as any other car on the train. The seats were basically the same as a regular seat on the train. They do not recline and are as hard as a rock to sit in. I won't be booking Business class again. Why would I pay more to ride there when it is basically the same as the regular cars? Don't waste your money on Business class. read more

I was not a passenger on the Amtrak (Amtrak is your government passenger rail service). When I look at the train stations in Japan and look at ours it is rather embarrassing. I took pictures so people in other countries that read my reviews can get an understanding of our rail system vs theirs. One of the huge differences is scale. Our country is just so darn big and it would take me 3 days to travel from ST. Louis to California. Or fly for 4 hours. So you can see why rail is not popular. I also wanted to take pictures of what is inside our train stations vs what other countries have. As we have minimal facilities and no big shopping inside the station nor outside the station. Just a railyard as our trains haul cargo and not many passengers. One note I was taking pictures inside for my review and a guard came up to me and told me to stop taking pictures. I complied because I was finished and St. Louis jail is not cool. LOL read more

WhooWhoo, the free Exhibit Train museum is AWESOME. Over ten cars long and on display Saturday & Sundays from 11:00am-3:30pm... this in-train museum is fUHreee! Yes, as free as Will Ferrell streaking in the quad. Not only did the kidlets really enjoy seeing a train up close and going inside walking from car to car and moving all the conductor parts, wheels, and blowing the horns - but adults can enjoy learning the history of the railways and seeing all of the vintage posters (rad!). I also learned of the Missouri River Runner train that goes from here to Kansas City in about 5 hours, and in Kansas City there's another children's train museum. So maybe, just maybe we'll take our first scenic train ride just for fun. Parking is at the Union Station lot for a few bucks. WHOOWHOO! read more

As far as transportation goes it's pretty good. Nice seats with plenty of leg room. The only thing that I don't like about the Amtrak is the price; people who don't have cars are looking for an affordable alternative and the Amtrak is not that option in my opinion. read more

This review is for Amtrak train service, not for the station. Amtrak is what it is. From my perspective, it is a clean, safe way for Teen and her friends to visit each other without me and the other parents having to drive several hours and spend a ton of money on gas. Ticketing is fairly easy on the website, and you can easily check the status of the train in several different ways. This is important because the trains are often late, and teens aren't the best communicators. I can check the status on the iphone app, on the website, or I can sign up to receive text messages. For those who need to work on the train, spend the extra bucks on business class. It is quiet and usually child-free so you can reliably work. That said, it does share a car with the cafe so if there is a big ball game it may get loud. read more

For those of you who have traveled internationally, when you hear "train service," you may imagine swift and speedy service such as the Euro Rail or some rails in Asia. Some may imagine worse forms such as rails in poorer areas of the world. Well, although Amtrak is in a first world country it is somewhere in the middle as far as overall experience. It's always packed, at least on my ride to and from Chicago from St. Louis, and media says that train ridership is up which should be providing funds to better the service. However, you'd never know it because it takes the same, long 5.5 hours to get from St Louis to Chicago (the same time to drive) as it has for years. They always have places where "special fast tracks" lie, but you would never know it. They have terrible communication, because last minute, the train will have to stop for some reason or another. Don't expect to arrive on time!! The cars are fairly old. Honestly, in some ways, the buses are faster & I opt for those of weather permits-and you will more often have Wifi on buses, as not all trains have it. You won't have a cafe car on the bus, but honesty, the food is so $$ and processed on Amtrak that I bring mine anyway. I just hope they get with the 2K one day and invest money to better service for the many passengers who expect and deserve it. read more

I'm a young guy that wants to support regional and local rail so I try to take Amtrak when I have the time, even though I have the money to fly. I really want to like taking the train, but I consistently have the worst experience with service and Amtrak employees. The dining cart is always under stocked for food and beverage, which I guess I understand considering that the train is rarely full. What isn't really understandable is why the employees are either apathetic or rude. When you fly, flight attendants treat you like a true customer - someone who has paid for a ticket and should be treated in a way that would make them want to buy another ticket. Amtrak employees seem to act like they are doing you a favor - which is giving you a ride that takes three times as long as a flight and costs almost as much. I'll still take the train when I can but I'm going to keep posting negative reviews until Amtrak starts to care. read more

As far as Amtrak Stations Go...this one seems to 'enjoy' inconveniencing customers. They Form, and then hold lines, for a long time, before starting the checking of tickets, etc. The station layout makes it awkward for "good byes," as they are standing 'right over there,' for about 30 minutes, then they check tickets, and the line needs "to keep moving. " So, you quickly wave, and are sucked into the Trainway...wierd. {Of course Chicago assigns seats Willie-nilly, so this ISN'T AMTRAK's worst...just weirdly layed out and operated.} *The services are contracted out, so the food joint varies in convenience, to them. *The Actual Amtrak counter agents are not outright trying to be difficult, but their obvious disintrest, makes for a less than exciting experience. They Sell, but do not Honor, Missori Lottery tickets. SO, if you win any significant amount, you have to Take a taxi to cash it in...if it is a cheap win...you have to Decide at which point, it becomes Not Worth, mailing in, and waiting...IF THEY TOLD YOU BEFORE BUYING, then, maybe you wouldn't. read more

Easy to find from the highway - great signage. It was easy to park, and cheap overnight in a gated lot. Way more organized than Chicago's Union Station. We printed our tickets and got right into a line that was orderly and easy to follow on our way to the train. The train left on time and everything was great. Splurge on business class - it is worth it! I really loved taking Amtrak and can't wait to do it again. read more

Just started riding the train RT between STL and CHI and have found it to be my new favorite way to travel. I love that I don't have to go thru TSA, ticket lines, etc. Make plans online plus they have an APP, short term and long term parking nearby, and walk to terminal in under 2 minutes. I have rarely had to share a seat and have ridden 6 times in the past 30 days. There are 2 outlets in every row making it convenient to plug in phone or laptop and WIFI worked every time all the time. Lots of rm for luggage overhead and easily accessible all the time. Big bathrooms, dining cafe (eat beforehand as its just not healthy food), or I bring my own food aboard which is no problem. The seats are spacious and roomy, plenty of leg and elbow room, big windows for plenty of natural lighting. One time we were late 30 minutes arriving, otherwise, it's been on time or early. read more

I have taken the Eagle many times back and forth from STL to Chicago, and I have never had any problems. Granted, I have someone drop me off and I know how to get around the Chi by foot very well, so that may have thrown my review a bit. However, I have had staff who have been very helpful in the company's procedures and they keep me coming back for my hometown trips! read more

Service sucks. I'm lucky to be giving this place two stars. I was FIVE hours late on a recent trip to Chicago. I went up for the extended holiday weekend so I really didn't have a lot of time to be messing around. Thought the train would be a good idea since it is almost exactly the same time to get up there as driving. Boy was I wrong. We arrived again FIVE hours late which screwed my day up, royally. I wasn't able to take my kids to the Willis tower Skydeck or the Navy Pier. The didn't preboard seniors or kids under the age 10 either. It was more like line up, sit on the floor and wait for the mad dash to the train. The train station was small as can be and not that clean. The only thing this place has going for it is the train had a lot of room and the ticket was cheap. read more

I have to say, took Amtrak from St. Louis to Seattle only because I was afraid of the extra-bag fees the airlines would charge. Turned out to be a great trip, with lots and lots of leg room, a soft, silent ride, decent food, and beautiful scenery. And all for $175. I'm going to do this again soon! read more

This review is for the train and organization as a whole, not the St. Louis Station. For me personally, the train isn't worth the effort and cost when you can drive and make it to where you need to go faster, have less chance of a delay / problems with the train or track, or risk a cancellation entirely. This is a personal opinion and not the reason for the 1 star. I have had several experiences with Amtrak. About 95% of the time the train was late. Additionally, almost each time there are delays while in route. Again for me, it's not worth it. The last and worst experience I had was a STL to Hermann, 1 day round trip. The outbound was delayed for about 1 hour. When we arrived in Hermann, one conductor told us the last departure back to STL was at 2:45pm (leaving us a little over 1 hour in Hermann). So we checked with a second conductor, he said to be back at the station "eh around 8pm." That was when we were originally scheduled to leave. Long story short, the train didn't come at 8pm, it didn't come at 10pm when we were told to be ready after the 8pm didn't show. We then found that the 10pm train was CANCELLED entirely. Hermann is about 1.5 hours away from St. Louis. Just far enough to not be able to ask someone to come pick us up at 10pm. A replacement train came after midnight. We had boarded Amtrak that morning at 9:30am and did not get back off in STL until 2:00am. While on the train the conductor made an announcement to call and get a refund for the return trip since the actual train was cancelled. Over 1 hour of my work day was spent on the phone with Amtrak "customer service" (using this term very loosely) only to be told I could not have a refund. The ticket was cheap; it was a matter of principle. The trip was a disaster, I was highly inconvenienced, I have a dog at home that was left inside for over 15 hours, and so on, all due to Amtrak's errors and they didn't even care enough to refund my money - as I was told they would - after I spent an additional hour of my time, AT WORK, on the phone to request said refund. It's one thing to have issues with a train, such is life. But to have such disregard for your customers put me over the edge. Take my advice: fly, drive, or MegaBus. You'll be much better off. read more

Train 3 hours late to pick up, Amtrak employees rude, diner car waitress rude, they ran out of the sides to go with the meal and still charge you the same and were upset with me for even asking. I take the Amtrak from St. Louis to Chicago all the time. I take an Uber to get on the 4:35AM train and I am in downtown Chicago by 10AM. It's cheap and I can snooze, which I love. Everyone picks on Amtrak, and I'm not sure why because it's such a convenient and inexpensive option to get to Chicago - costs less than the gas, for sure. They've also upgraded their food and drink selection, which is nice. Plus, with a 10-ride ticket, you don't even have to worry about reservations - just get on the train. Cost per ride comes out cheaper that way, too. Not much to complain about, in my opinion. Also, I've have one delayed train in the last 20 trips or so I've taken. Track work is coming to an end and I think this problem will be a thing of the past. Pro tip: Drive to Alton and take the train from there for a better place to leave your car. The tracks between St. Louis and Alton are slow-going, too. read more

The only good thing I can find to say here is that, due to this experience and this trip from this Amtrak station, I am 110% sure that I will never be riding Amtrak again. I was moving back from Baltimore for the summer and I had to take an Amtrak from STL to Chicago to get home. I had two suitcases and a backpack filled to the brim with all the stuff that I was moving from Baltimore. My suitcase was 51.4 pounds (the limit being 50) and the woman made me remove some of my belongings from the suitcase because it was over the limit. Now I understand that this is her job, but seriously, 1.4 pounds over on a TRAIN. This isn't even an airplane. I was removing blankets and pillows and my underwear was falling all over the floor just so I could take out a pound and a half so that the women would take it. On top of that. I did not feel comfortable or safe in this station. My train to Chicago was supposed to 6 hours and it took 10. I missed a funeral for my aunt. Now this isn't this stations fault, but what started as a bad day ended as a horrible one. I will not be using Amtrak again and I highly encourage others to find other sources of transportation. read more

Amtrak has gotten worse last few years. Every 25 minutes they blast on speaker for a full 90 seconds that the food snack car car is open and go down the whole list of each food item. It's like one inforcomercial. Makes greyhound more relaxing. I listen to heavy metal music and still ruins my music and forget about a nap. Also amtrak stops at to many little towns. Half need to be eliminated as it adds to much time. How can cities like NYC and Chicago have one stop but once you get past the city it's stopping every 20 minutes in farmland? The staff is not friendly like like years ago now it's and doll and doll out the rules...If u have and doll out beer in your seat we will call call the police. If u eat your own food in snack car you will be told to move to use a our seat. Just a lot of negativity. Also to many smoking opportunities people come back in train reaking. read more
