Amy is hands down simply the best FP doc in Sonoma County. She is brilliant and treats her patients with kindness, compassion and respect. Any questions you have are answered with a detailed response. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer she called me personally on a Saturday to tell me, she could have easily passed that call on to the radiologist to make but she didn't. When she called me she had already left a message for the surgeon and had made an appt for me with the Nurse Navigator at the Sutter Women's Health Center. I agree her staff is just OK. I often feel that I am bothering them when I need to schedule an appt or am checking in for one. However the practice Doyle Park Family Medicine recently joined with the Sutter North Bay Foundation which may help the staff issue. I agree that the world could use many more Amy Shaws read more

I love Amy Shaw. She's been our family physician for about 13 years now and I have never, ever had a bad experience with her. She has the very best manner a doctor can have and works WITH her patients and not AT them. She is attentive and personable. She's handled every kind of ailment from colds to migraine headaches to "female" issues to a heart attack and everything else known to human kind with consistent excellence and enthusiasm. She knows her stuff and does it well - even with our nightmare insurance industry clogging up the system. Her staff is ... ok. Some are great and some are poorly prepared to deal with human beings and our propencity for theatrics when we're not well. Her office manager isn't very accomodating. However, Dr. Shaw is such that she outshines any deduction in rating her staff may cause. She deserves a lot more than this yelp. Amy Shaw and their team saved my life. It is very scary being diagnosed with Cancer especially stage 4 terminal cancer. Their team made me feel cared for and safe. Many doctors are not focused on getting the job done quick. With Amy's expertise, I felt the immediate attention and services I needed were taken care of in a very professional manner. Ten-years-ago, I was dianosed with stage three endometrial cancer and I had a full hysterectomy. My after care had no cohesion and I was having the same tests done by three different doctors, four times a year, at the same time. Doctor Shaw saw that this was taking a toll on me suggested that she could just become my gynecological after care doctor and I would only have to see her for those specific exams. What a releif. I have to say that she is not only one of the best doctors I have ever had, she is also one of the best people that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She went over and above what any other doctor would have done. I have not been treated that way by any other doctor since my family doctor when I was growing up. She saw my illness as not only the cancer that had brought me to her but as connected to all other parts of me and she got me to have mammograms. Something I never thought I would do and now I am fearful if I don't have them. Tracy, her assistant, is just a wonderful as doctor Shaw. They are a perfect team and I grew to looking forward to my appointments, if for no other reason than to see them. I highly recommend Dr. Amy Shaw and Tracy with no hesitation. Boy, do I have to disagree with the other person's review. Hopefully my perspective can provide a thread of brevity. Amy Shaw's unconscionable behavior started me on the worst roller coaster I have been on. I went into Amy as a new patient, for a routine pelvic exam. On exam she located some masses by my ovaries and prescribed a pelvic ultrasound.I went for the ultra sound and saw the masses. I had gone for the ultrasound the next week, so I think it was pretty apparent that I wasn't just blowing off her advice and was willing to take action to take care of myself. I state this observation because I know there are women that want to stay in denial and you really have to pound to get thru their defense system. But as a doc you gotta also be able to present info geared for the person you are talking with. Its a big responsibility. that nite Amy called and left a phone message saying "This is serious, we have to talk." When I spoke with her she stated her opinion as being I probably had ovarian cancer, "which is very aggressive". Amy said she was referring me on to a surgeon at UCSF, Bethan Powell. All of this conversation was on the phone while I was at work. I was absolutely terrified. The next day , Thursday, I spoke with Amy again and she said the surgeon wanted a CT scan. I went and had that done on Thursday. That evening I got a phone call from Amy telling me good news. Everything else was clean. No liver, lymph or stomach growths. Everything else clean. Just the ovarian tumors which were apple size masses. I got together with Dr. Shaw at her office the next day, just before she was leaving on a two week vacation. She went over the CT scan saying that the growths could be benign but to go forward with the surgeon. I didn't like the surgeon. She was a bit of a cold fish for me and besides some of our different beliefs about just how much of me she should take during the surgery, she was condescending and belittled me by rolling her eyes and laughing at my beliefs. So I went to a couple of other top notch surgeons. Amy had informed me that with ovarian cancer it was a dangerous operation and the surgeon had to be particularly skilled so as not to take a chance on breaking the masses, mine still intact, and run the risk of seeding the rest of the abdomen with cancer cells. It was her opinion Dr. Powell was the only one, in the northern california area that was qualified. she did mention one other man but not his name. I did my own research and came up with a couple of surgeons who presented as being extremely quailifed. One of them was a tender gentle man that is the head of OB Gyn down at Stanford, Dr. Jonathan Berek. On the day Amy was to return to her office from her vacation I went in and asked that a message be given to her asap to contact me. Two weeks later she called and I tried to communicate the affect her initial communication had on me. I told her it was a roller coaster and that if the info could have presented in a more balanced manner, such as, these could be benign or it is possible they are cancer, that approach would have been easier for me to deal with. She responded emphatically, "You really took yourself on a roller coaster. You went to 3 different surgeons! And it probably is cancer". I got off the phone. It was obvious no responsiblilty was going to be taken and whatever mood she was in was how she felt about me having cancer. That of course plunged me even further into the scarey ride that this journey was for me at times, until I found the very responsible and sensitive doctors that could communicate in a more balanced manner. "These are probably benign, or there is a 50/50 chance that they are, and even if they are not, they are intact and we can get all of it .surgery should be seriously considered to make sure. even as benign tumors they present some danger. I feel that Amy's communcation and behavior was callous, unprofessional and insensitive. I feel we need a high level of accountability in all relationships but especially in the healing and medical professions. I want visibility as a woman, a person. I am not an ovarian tumor. By the way, I returned home from surgery this thursday after surgery, at Stanford with Dr. Berek, on tuesday. The 2 tumors were benign and there was no evidence of cancer anywhere in my abdominal or peritoneal cavity. HIp HIp Hurray!! I hope this can save even one person from going on the ride Amy Shaw provoked and was unwilling to take any responsibility for. I understand it was my ride, but uhhh yeah. Lets get it together gals, we want to rag on men and the medical system but the ole gals network can also be like being thrown to the tigers. Dr Amy Shaw is truly a very special physician! Not only is she knowledgeable and current in the latest information that is available for treatment and follow up for a cancer patient, she REALLY CARES about her patients. If she wants to be sure about some information or latest wisdom of an issue, she researches and talks to other doctors. All that and she takes TIME with you as if you were the only patient that mattered regardless of how long it takes. You could NOT POSSIBLY be in better, more competent hands! WOW..I had had a somewhat negative impression of Sonoma County docs after moving here from SF 6 years ago and being diagnosed with breast cancer. While my surgeon, and reconstructive surgeon were great I had not yet connected with a great Dr for followup. My impressions changed radically yesterday after Dr Shaw spent 90 minutes with me and provided me with invaluable info as a cancer survivor. I left feeling healthy but with a path to improve on. I recommend her to anyone who has had cancer and wants to have concise info condensed down into a plan for health. read more

I was referred to Dr. Amy Shaw through Dr. Wayne Keiser who has been my oncologist since moving up to Santa Rosa from San Francisco. My mother died from advanced breast cancer in 1979. I was diagnosed at age 60 with stage one breast cancer and had a lumpectomy. My breast cancer came back nearly three years later and I had to have a mastectomy of the same breast. I have had pain since my surgeries and was told by another doctor that this would subside in a few years. This was never the case. And as a breast cancer survivor, when I felt this pain over my rib cage, I immediately started to panic thinking the cancer came back and was in my bones. I have been seeing a physical therapist for a rotator cuff tear and was told that Dr. Shaw had spoken to a group there about the complications of breast pain after surgery due to nerve damage. I immediately called her office and spoke with Traci who was able to get me an appointment with Dr. Shaw the next day. After three appointments, I am happy to say that my breast pain has subsided and although I am still not quite there yet, I am feeling so much better and am able to sleep through the night without waking up to pain. I will continue to see Dr. Shaw for injections and am so grateful that I am on the right track and getting this much needed relief. If anyone out there is in crisis and having any issues with any post surgery pain, Dr. Shaw is the best person to consult with. She does her homework and is on top of all the new treatments that are out there. I am so grateful to have Dr. Amy Shaw as my physician! read more
