LIKE BRAND NEW HAIR! I have wanted straight hair for a while and Amy is the best in the industry for Japanese Thermal Straightening. Not sure where the bad reviews are coming from, as she was extremely professional and kind throughout the entire consultation and procedure. Yes her salon is out of a DADU in the back of her property, but she is working with years of expertise which is evident in the quality of her work, and the space was clean and professional. I Cannot recommend Amy highly enough!! I had been on the fence about getting Japanese hair straightening for about a year because my naturally curly hair was so frizzy and hard to manage. I spent years trying the Curly Girl Method and was fed up with the constant battle of products and styling. I had tried a keratin treatment before, which smoothed it a bit but didn't help with actually tackling the curls. So, I decided to take the plunge! Amy walked me through each step and did a strand test on my hair to confirm whether it could handle the treatment, along with explaining possible side effects. My keratin treatment from almost a year prior was obvious in the strand test -- crazy to see the damaged vs. virgin hair! She explained I was still a good candidate but might see some dryness toward the ends since it was already damaged, which I was fine with. We were able to do the full treatment the next day, and it was a very pleasant experience -- you can really tell Amy knows her stuff! I got to relax for a few hours and watch TV, and then it was done. Amy recommended some conditioning products, which I bought, and then I had to wait three days before washing or doing anything that could bend the hair. Here are my before and after photos! The "after" is after I waited the three days, washed, and blow-dried with nothing but my fingers and maybe 15 minutes of time. Then on vacation I didn't have my regular blow dryer and let it mostly air dry to see how it would feel -- still soft and shiny! I am stunned by the result! Hair shedding and scalp burning since treatment. I got the Japanese thermal straightening done at Amy's salon. During my visit, Amy was not very friendly towards me, but we were able to proceed with the service anyway. (I had questions about how she landed at my price estimate for the service, and she had a bit of an attitude but it smoothed over.) By the end of the service, I initially did like my result - my hair looked sleek, smooth and straight. However, in the next few weeks I contacted Amy with questions about how to care for my hair to keep it in good condition, and in my experience she was not been as responsive as I would like from my hair stylist. My scalp has been burning and my hair is shedding since the treatment, and this is concerning as I already struggle with hair loss. I have since read that Japanese thermal straightening can cause hair fall. I have tried contacting Amy for stylist advice for post treatment, and she does not respond. Overall, for the cost and the investment, I am disappointed in this experience and especially Amy's customer service towards me. I went to Amy's hair salon about two months ago to get a Yuko Japanese hair straightening for my birthday present. A little background- I am 16, and for the past couple years my hair has become ruthlessly crazy and curly! I was sick of spending time straightening and styling my hair and not ever liking the results, so for my birthday my dad offered to let me get my hair straightened professionally. I was so shocked and happy and immediately started researching a place to get my hair a Japanese straightening and came across Amys Website. I called Amy that day and asked when the next available time was for a Japanese straightening was, and she had an opening that weekend and booked me! Amy was super nice and had snacks, magazines, and tv to keep me busy as she worked on my hair. I'm not going to lie and say it didn't take a long time, for hair as curly as mine it look about 5 hours!! But I am more than happy with the results. My hair is perfectly straight and super easy to style! I was worried getting my hair chemically treated since it is thin. I thought it would burn off. But from what I can tell there was no damage whatsover and my hair feels and looks as healthy as ever. It has been 2 months and my hair is still perfectly straight. Although, it has grown a tiny bit at the roots, but I won't need a retouch for another 4 months or more most likely. I will definitely return! Amy was my long-time stylist for 19+ years because she always provides excellent outcomes with specialty services such as Japanese or other hair thermal straightening service, Korean Iron Perm, hair coloring, etc. she is just absolutely lovely, so attentive, kind, creative, and skillful. She knows exactly what I need every time. She would take her time and never rush her clients. She also provides amazing services such as large screen tv with streaming services including movies and tv shows, wifi, a bar with snacks, coffee and drinks, etc. I felt so comfortable and at ease each time I came here. I heard about Korean Iron Perm that a lot of Korean pop stars had and they look so amazing. Since I had long hair and I want to have that perm too. During my 1st appointment, she was very informative on what she would be doing and how long it would take and what to expect afterwards-I was confident she would make my hair look good and take good care of me. One day a friend strolled into lunch with sleek, healthy straight hair and I had to know...where and how ? My hair can get frizzy with the slightest drop of rain and you know we get more than one drop here in Seattle. I'm blown away that Amy doesn't have 5 stars across the board from everyone. First of all her salon is a cute lil studio behind her house. Inside there is a lil kitchen, big screen tv & comfy couch so my daughter & mom decided to stay while the process was being done. Amy is delightful, such a sweet lady & really knows what she's doing with an attention to detail. I have the thickest most unruly hair of anyone that I've ever met, also it's very long. When I walked in it was down to my butt but I was wanted a Japanese yuko chemical straightening and waist length hair. 12mo prior to me trying this treatment I had the Brazilian blowout done to my hair twice in one week & neither time worked even slightly, I was so devastated & was even hesitant that this treatment might not work. Because of my extremely thick, coarse, curly, long hair this treatment took poor Amy 7hrs to finish but she did it right without skipping details to make sure I left with a huge smile on my face that will last till it grows out. It worked, it really worked! Tips: if you've ever had your hair dyed or treated with anything such as a Brazilian blowout wait at least a year if not longer to do this treatment for optimal goals. My hair grows quickly about 6in a year so I could tell that the new hair that had never had Brazilian done to it came out smoother than the rest of my hair, however it all is frizz & curl free so I'm still happy. I need to blow dry it with a brush or flat iron it slightly for the full pin straight look but I don't have time for that so the full bodied straight hair is what I have on the daily now. I have mixed feelings about this location. I bought a Groupon for a Brazilian Blowout for $99. It was supposed to cover up to $300 worth of services and 15% off of products. I have had this hair treatment before, so my review is not based on the results (because the results were as good as the first time I received the treatment.) I only give this establishment 3 stars because of the cost and the fact that I did not receive the services I paid for. They had great customer service and I was not displeased with the way that they treated me. My dissatisfaction began when i was told that my hair would cost $435 for the treatment. $435!!! I have been quoted $250-300 at a couple of other places I've checked out, including the place I had my hair done the first time. Since my Groupon covered $300 of that, I would have to cover the difference of $135 (my original expectation was that I wouldn't have to pay any more than just tip). Since I had already paid $99 for the Groupon, my total cost would be $234. Okay, fine. Since I drove all the way to Burien, I didn't really feel like arguing. Let me just say, I've received a lot of great deals through Groupon that have legitimately saved me money but this wasn't one of them. After tip, I paid the exact same amount as I did for my first treatment, but this location was out of the way instead of right near my house. The 15% discount was also not honored in the way I felt it should. I was given the option of 3 for 15% off or 4 for 20% off. When I said the Groupon said that I could get 15% off of products (rules did not indicate multiple purchase required) and I only needed one bottle (because I still had the shampoo and conditioner needed from the last time) I was told no. I could only get 15% off if I bought three. Not very fair. All in all, my experience was okay. I'm glad I had the Groupon since the cost equaled out to what I am used to paying but I would not go out of my way to go to this Salon again. I went here for the first time after buying a voucher for $99 for $300 worth of services. Much like the other reviewers, while the results were amazing, the process of doing it and costs associated it were horrible. First off, this place is pretty ghetto, and they way they operate it reflects this also. They had to put me in a back room with a fan blowing because the smell of the product was overwhelming. Like, burning my eyes bad. It took a lot longer than 2 hours for them to do my Blowout for whatever reason. And on top of that, they charged by $180 EXTRA because I had long hair (so I pretty much paid full price for this service). Did my Brazilian Blowout look great and last the full 3 months (I used the BB products)? Absolutely! But would I come back here ever again? I have been getting the Japanese thermal hair straightening about 4 years now and I can say for sure Amy's salon is the best of the best! She is very skilled in the specific hair treatments offered and always knows exactly what you need for the best result!! Amy has just moved to Bothell which is nice for me since I used to always drive down to Burien (still well worth the drive) Everytime I come in I'm treated with such friendly service and hospitality. Since a lot of the hair treatments take a while, there is always snacks, drinks and magazines available. As well as a TV now too with different Netflix shows to choose from. But beyond the fact of it being so comfortable, let me talk about the real reason I come....my hair. I was always nervous about going to the right place for Japanese thermal hair straightening since its a long process (4-6 hours) and if not done correctly can be very damaging. After going to many salons, getting consultations, hair samples taken ect.... I finally took a chance on Amy's. All I can say it's it's one of the best decisions i have ever made. I always leave the salon with my hair feeling healthier and stronger. Before my hair was frizzy and damaged. I would straighten it everyday to try to make it look as healthy as possible but I only hurt it more. I was in denial that anyone could really help/fix my hair. But since getting the treatment, my hair is shiny, dries perfectly straight, my blow drying time was cut in half. I was finally able to grow out my hair like I wanted. Everything about it was amazing. This treatment is only for the people that want their hair really straight all the time. But if you are looking for something to relax your curls or deep condition she has treatments for it too. Plus she offers a lot of deal on her website. I spend at least 1.5 hours straightening my hair every day, and I was tired of it! I found out about Japanese Straightening and found nothing but good, positive results online. It sounded too good to be true. I had a Brazilian Blowout years ago, which did nothing spectacular for my hair type. I came upon Amy's Salon website, and figured I'd give it a shot. I scheduled a consultation, was given a breakdown of what would happen, the price, etc. Both ladies I spoke with were very nice and helpful. A week later, I came back to begin the 5 hour process of what would become a lifelong investment... I had the japanese straightening completed 3 weeks ago, and I am every satisfied with the results. No more wasting time blow-drying my hair or straightening it (unless I need to be somewhere quick after a shower!). My hair dries completely straight, and I now realize how stressed I was just thinking about the process of straightening my hair in the past. All of that stress is now gone! I have straight hair that will last up to 6 months! I already booked my next appointment in June to have it touched up for a fraction of the price. After reading the reviews about using the groupon there, I'm not even going. I worked out a deal with my normal salon (Salon Boulay Puyallup, WA) where I know they do amazing, quality work at a great price and with awesome perks. I don't think its right that just because they agree to be apart of groupon that they can price guage customers who decide use utilize the groupon. I contact groupon about getting a refund or credit back to my account so we will see what happens. Either way, I'm not giving them my business. It doesn't sound like they know what they are doing AT all! Typically groupon is meant to build up your clientele, so that people enjoy the experience and the great deal and want to come back. Total hair disaster. Never have I written a more firm or ominous Yelp review. DONT GO HERE. Amy 1) Cut off all my hair (even when I began to cry in the middle of the cut) 2) Lied about it 3) BURNED OFF THE REST I have never been more dissatisfied with a hair experience in my life. I went in to have my hair thermally reconditioned (not cut since I WAS growing it out). Thermal reconditioning typically requires a strand test. I asked Amy's about this and they told me that since my hair looked really healthy everything would be fine. (Lie #1). Everything was not fine. My hair became severely burnt, frizzed out and fried in the process. I suspect that they knew they had killed my hair about halfway through the reconditioning process and even though I stressed that I did NOT want my hair cut, they basically insisted that "since my hair was so uneven" I needed to have it cut. The real motivation here was to cut off the dead parts. I allowed for a trim. Instead they chopped about 3 inches off my hair and put in thick, thick layers. In the middle of the cut I began to cry (I know this is ridiculous) and asked for no more layers. We got in a fight and she insisted that she was NOT putting in layers and that my hair already had layers (Lie #2). Now I suspect that she was just trying to cut the damage out of my hair since she knew that she had left the straightening formula on too long. She also charged me extra to have this cut that I really did not want. After 4.5 hours and 200 + dollars I left the salon. On the surface my hair was straight but underneath it began to frizz and mat severely. I called back hoping for some sort of conditioning treatment or helpful advice. Instead she just told me that she would need to cut that hair off (basically the rest of my hair) (Lie #3) also since I wouldn't cut off essentially all my hair it was my fault that the reconditioning was not perfect. This was quite literally the worst hair disaster of my life. My roommate gets this done all the time and she verified that this has NEVER EVER happened to her. She was shocked, horrified and appalled at the service and treatment provided by Amy's. NEVER go here. EVER. If I have any solace, it will be knowing that I prevented others from making my mistake. Yes, the thermal reconditioning is cheaper than in other salons but do you want to kill your hair FOREVER? Probably not. read more

The individual doing my hair was not very friendly, and used gloves while washing my hair which hurt. Even Tabatha has mentioned several times that this is a no-no. I used a groupon ($99 for $300) for a Brazilian blowout. I was hesitant because of the chemicals (although they have a big poster on the wall saying formaldehyde free...which is the one I opted for). I asked if I could apply the $99 for other services but they said "no, it was non-transferable." The two women (Amy and her partner) went back and forth in Vietnamese discussing what I wanted. I think Amy was ok with letting my apply it to other services but then the partner disagreed and said "no." I had asked about it also because they took a ruler to my head and measured it to say that I would have to pay extra for it. I wasn't planning to pay extra because I thought that $300 should cover it. Anyway, I decided to have my hair cut also which did decrease the cost a little bit. The whole process was ok but when I pointed out that I wanted the formaldehyde-free blowout. They said "Oh? You want that one?" I asked, "So it's formaldehyde-free?" and they responded "That's what they say." I'm not quite sure what that meant. Anyway, I wasn't even sure if that's what they ended up using on my hair. After everything was completed, I was satisfied with the end result but wouldn't go back. Apparently Groupon does say you wouldn't lose what you paid for it, therefore I should've been able to use it on other services. I only went the day that it was expiring because I didn't realize that at the time. If it were truly $99 then I would've been more satisfied although I'm not sure how honest/trustworthy they are because of my experience. Oh, and they charge extra for using your credit card. While waiting, I also saw that their affiliation with the BBB wasn't current either which added to my feelings of the whole place being sketchy. I had a similar experience RE pricing as Ally from the previous reference. This seems to be typical for many salons that offer the Brazilian Blowout though, so I was prepared to pay for more. I have more issues with this salon than just the price: 1 - Price - I was told that since my hair was waist length, it would cost an extra 100$ - that I was prepared for with having long hair. I was NOT prepared for her to cut off about 6-7 inches when I told her to take off 2 inches. She then told me - after cutting much more hair than i both told, and showed her with my fingers, to cut off. If you are going to cut off more than half a foot of my hair, dont charge me the full length hair price. 2 - Cut - She cut off about 7 inches of hair when i told her 2, and also showed her with my fingers the MAXIMUM I wanted to be cut off. 3 - Environment - horrible environment, not enjoyable experience at all. Lots of foreign language being spoken all the time, no interaction with me in english - I was completely ignored nearly the whole time. 4 - Hair damage - After washing my hair, the two boys who were doing the washing took a towel and vigorously and harshly RUBBED a towel all over my head, ratting it up and damaging the hair. You do not use a towel as a weapon, it should be used as an absorption tool. 5 - Time - I waited 25 minutes after my appointment time to even get started. During the whole process, assistants would touch my hair, then leave to talk on their cell phones, or just vanish for no reason multiple times. I was already irritated that they started 25 minutes late and this just made me later. 6 - Quality of Brazilian application - The people doing the flat ironing did not take care to get close to the hairline. They did do a good job for most of my hair, but since it was a re-application - I really caredc about getting the roots an dnear the hairline. This was sub-[par application, and I have gotten Brazilian Blowouts at many different salons. 7 - No English spoken except for one person. Before getting the haircut, the boys who washed and damaged my hair with the towels combed it out and never bothered to part my hair. I usually part my hair in a straight line, and wanted my hair cut to reflect that. I asked the boys to "please part my hair in a straight line" response - blank looks and huh? I slowly repeated my self - "please part my hair in a straight line". No one except the one woman could understand anything I was saying. A good friend with thick, wavy, coarse hair like mine Emailed me and told me I must try this "Japanese Hair Straightening". So I saw the photos of her new FABULOUS straight hair and decide I needed to do some googling. (Hair dryers and flat irons are not my friends!) What I first discovered was that A) there aren't many salons in Seattle that do it and B) it's expensive and time consuming! So I turned to Yelp, which I use all the time for guidance. I narrowed it down to Amy's and one other salon. I was shocked to read the one reviewer's hair burning/scalping review regarding their experience with hair straightening at Amy's Salon . But, I am not one to count on one reviewer's extreme review, ever, I don't care how many other reviews they have given. I took it into account and read and investigated some more. I found other sites that had good reviews for Amy's and with a bit of trepidation called Amy's Salon for an appointment. Why, did I pick this salon vs. others? Well, the others seemed to be very upscale and very expensive. Amy herself answered the phone, and told me she could get me in that week (doubt that would happen at the fancy salon!). We also discussed the differences between the Japanese straightening and the Brazilian. There are lots of differences but the Brazilian costs less. She estimated my shoulder length hair to cost about $250 So last Friday at 10:30 I went to get my hair straightened. I was running late and sheepishly called Amy from my car and told her I would be 30 minutes late. She was so nice about it and told me to still come in, no problem. Once I arrived (it's almost in Burien on 1st Ave.) Amy greeted me, she is a gorgeous Vietmanese gal with beautiful hair. She introduced me to Chris, the second stylist who would be working on my big ol' head o' hair that day. We sat down and she consulted with me about the Brazilian and Japanese processes. I expected that she would push the more expensive Japanese on me, and I was already leaning toward the Brazilian (it seemed less damaging and the photos I found on the next seemed like the hair looked shinier) Amy agreed with me that the Brazilian would probably work best for me. So off we go, the FIRST thing she told me was to be SURE to use a Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) free shampoo. Well, I stopped using SLS products a while back, so that was no problem, but she explained there was a reason for it, the SLS strips the Keratin treatment faster and the hair may become wavy/curly again a lot faster than it should. Now the process, is a pain. (Nothing to do with the stylist, but I hate sitting for long periods in a salon!) The Brazilian Keratin straightening takes less time than the Japanese but she said I should expect to be there about 3 hours and she was correct. The process goes something like this: She segments your hair and then applies this stuff to each small part of hair (it looks like thick lotion) afterwards they sit you under a hair dryer for about 20 minutes and then they (2 people) blow dry each segment of hair while pulling taut and your hair actually steams up (I was really afraid they were "Frying" my hair and it would be ruined! ) Then after that, they take very,very hot flat irons (hair straighteners) and go back over each piece (the whole time your hair is (steaming/smoking) Oh yes, you must wear a mask due to the chemicals. Afterwards my hair was pin straight, but a little gummy/greasy looking. I was very surprised that unlike other hair procedures I have had in the past (perms, color) the product does not get washed out. As I paid, it ended up being $300 (my hair was longer than shoulder length and an extra charge for my very, very thick, resistant hair! Also included the $15 haircut!) Amy emphasized very strongly that I was NOT to wash my hair for 4 days! So, gals (or guys for all I know), don't plan on getting this done prior to any important events, because you cannot "hide" the hair by clipping it up or ponytailing it, (the object is to reinforced the straightn-ness as the hair "cures") . So for four days everytime I got my hair even slightly wet (rain) or shower steam, I used my flat iron over it. After all, I had a $300 investment! So today, I washed my hair for the first time. Oh my, it is so soft, so straight (but not pin straight, but that's good) There was a little breakage, but I expected it, I get that from every hair process I've ever had. My hair air dried so much faster than usual, and I then ran a flat iron/straightener through it for about 2 minutes and I was done. I LOVE IT, and will get it done again in a few months or however long it lasts. One word about Amy, I noticed she had a lot of "senior" clients. Getting their once a week "hairdos", I suggested she might want to increase her haircut price ($15!!?) She said, "I'm fine, it's okay", with a sweet smile. Gotta love that! read more

I just got the Brazilian Hair straightening/conditioning done to my hair and I LOVE IT!! This is a miracle for your hair. I have had curly hair my entire life, and anyone with curly locks knows it can be hard to grow long and gets frizzy easily. I have tried everything in the past and this is the first thing that really works. After the process, my hair is still curly (but more wavy than tight curls) and it look soo much healthier, shinier, and all around better. I don;t have to use product in my hair anymore either (i used to rely on gel/mouse/the works) I first got this treatment done when I was back in NY and they did a good job, but it was very pricey. I found Amy's in Seattle, and she does a GREAT job and it is much less expensive. This is the 3rd time that I have gotten this done at Amy's and every time she does a great job (and it is usually faster as well since she usually has 2 people working on my hair at one time). Honestly, i could not be happier with this treatment. My hair looks and feel so much better. Also - it is great for all hair types. My mom and my sister have gotten this done as well. My sister has wavy hair, and now she does not have to blow dry it straight - it will just dry that way. My mom also had slightly wavy hair as well and it just looks much healthier all around and also dries straight. The person who recommended this process to me had the most amazing results - her hair used to be like straw and I was taken aback when I saw pictures because her hair looked like 100% better. I don;t know about the bad review, but i have only had great experiences every time that I have been there. Also, Amy and her staff have always been professional and very sweet. Amys new location is great, she has a private salon right next to her home. I've been coming to Amys for almost 6 years now for Japanese straightening and never disappointed. She is very experienced and knows what she is doing so wherever you are it's worth the drive and money! Thanks to Amy my wild frizzy hair is silky smooth! read more

She is the best. I have been to stylists who charge twice as much but not even half as good. She promises the end result of a hair cut at the very beginning itself and the haircut turns out to be as perfect as she describes it to be. And oh, her yuko straightening is amazing. Amy's new location is lovely. It is relaxing, clean, and has even has wifi! I've been seeing Amy for years for Yuko Japanese straightening and she does an exceptional job every time. Amy takes the time to examine your hair before she starts the straightening process. I have color in my hair so she has to be careful not to damage it. I am always impressed with my results. I don't understand why other reviews are so negative. This place definitely deserves more recognition. I have been here three times for Japanese hair straightening and also gotten haircuts. Christine and Amy, have always been great to greet me in and offer snack or tea/coffee. The process is long but the results are amazing. I say that because I have been to few other places where the results aren't satisfactory and prices are absurd. read more

She really messed up may hair! Not only did it NOT come out straight but it also got damaged at the roots therefore took years to recover! Not recommended. Paid her $400! I wouldn't go to her for free! read more

I am a regular at Amy's Salon as is my daughter. I am happy with their services. Amy is so nice and she stands by her work. If you don't like what she did call her up and she gladly reschedules you and does what she can to make you happy. Her shop has a very relaxed atmosphere, soft music, tea, snacks if you get hungry. You can call and get an appointment quickly, at the time that best works for you. I love the way Amy cuts my hair, I can bring her a picture and walk out with pretty much the same haircut. She is also excellent at styling my hair, I wish I could make it look so good. They offer other services too, I have not had the chance to try them out yet. You should give Amy's Salon a try, I highly recommend her. read more

I have been getting my hair straightened with the Yuko Japanese thermal straightening by Amy for the past 5 years. It has changed my life by saving me hours of time doing my hair. Amy is very knowledgeable and experienced about hair straightening and she counsels every person who comes in her salon about what would be the best service for their hair type. I live across Puget Sound and have to take a ferry to go to Amy's, it is extremely worth it though! I now only see Amy to get my hair cut as well, I got tired of not getting the cut I want, so now I just go to Amy's salon so I can get exactly the style I want. Highly recommended. read more
