If you would like to waste 2 hours on a haircut that should have been completed in 45 minutes, all while listening to far too personal baby daddy stories shared by your nice, but unskilled, stylist, then this is the salon for you! What was that? Should I have said something? Well, I did. That's when the less than 100% fabulous customer service kicked in. I sent photos and messages documenting the haircut. I asked for a refund. After all, that was $90 for the haircut that looks like the craft scissor haircut my friend's daughter gave herself when she was 5. They want to "fix" it. There's barely any hair left to "fix" and also, no. You have lost my trust. Just refund the money. Here's my story: I chose one of my reference images (the one with green highlights) directly from their website based on cut and type of color, highlights with a fashion color. What could possibly go wrong? There is a person there who literally can cut the cut I want the picture proved it, right? The scheduler said she knew exactly who to book me with, but let's do a color consultation first for $60. I countered with, let's schedule the cut and the stylist, and I can discuss color then. At my appointment, I showed the stylist a carefully curated set of images, cut images, and the cut I wanted in pics of me when I had that cut. This is important because, I should back up and say I was asking for a pixie cut. I explained that I wanted my already short hair to be styled into a long banged, messy pixie with wispy tendrils by my ears. This would require trimming bangs, texturizing the longer "bob" sides and back. An hour in, I knew far too much about her personal life, and half my hair was clippered and way too short. Then she said, " Hey, maybe we should leave the other side as it is (when I came in)". Um, what? I asked to see the back. It had been clippered and the long hair on top laid on it like a rug. Zero texture. Um... the back of my head looks like a triangle? Can you please fix it? She did, kinda. Now, it's at mile marker two hours, and I am late. She was still not done. I told her I had to go and that I would have to settle for what I have. I left, put my hat on, and cried. But that was after I was also charged a service fee to tip. Next comes the customer service: After work, I took my hat off to discover that you could see my scalp in places. I have virtually no bangs, and it is waaaaay worse than I thought. I immediately emailed with pics. Their response, thanks for the feedback. I called and asked someone from their leadership to call me back. Nope, no call. Fast forward to the next day and several emails later, and the owner said you can either come in (next week) or "this matter is closed". Charming. I've had pixie cuts for 20 years. This was not a texture things or even a miscommunication. It was a failure of the scheduler, the stylist, and ultimately the owner. That stylist needs to be trained better and should have never been given me as a client. And the owner, well, just rude. When did customer service become so rare? Since first coming to Zeka for a haircut, I've now been back multiple times for hair coloring - balayage, foils, and fashion color! The last appointment I had was for lightening my hair even more and adding a fashion color. I was going to try blue, but since Taylor knows my end goals and my budget, we were able to figure out a game plan with pink, which would fade better to achieve the more seem less look I wanted. We actually didn't lighten my hair at the appointment because we determined my hair would get way too damaged if we were to go ahead with it (Taylor said she would if I wanted her to, but strongly advised against). I cannot say enough good things about this place! They are doing such a phenomenal job with all of their COVID-19 protocols and the two times I've been in the salon I've felt super safe and beyond appreciative of all the extra safety measures put in place. I've had both a cut and balayage by Taylor and she is just absolutely incredible. She takes the time to listen to what you want and explain everything she's going to do so thoroughly. I called to make an appointment after reading all of the reviews. I asked the receptionist for a quote for a root dye job and a TINY 1/2" trim. She asked me several times how long my hair was and I kept telling her that it was a little past my shoulders. She quoted me $75 for the root dye and $25 for my trim. When I arrived, I was happy with my hairstylist(sadly, I forgot her name) but she was very professional and friendly. When I went to pay, the total bill came out to $215. I did purchase a shampoo and conditioner set for $55, so my hair total came to $161?!?! I'm sure taxes are in there but the price was such a shock. When I told the front desk girl about it, she just looked me blankly and said, "I'm sorry" and didn't even offer to get a manager or do anything about it. She just handed me my receipt. I mean, I just got dye on MY ROOTS, not even my whole head. They are not a fancy, upscale salon, just a simple salon that charges an arm and a leg and makes up any old price they want. You can see on their website that every price has a "+" after it. AVOID BEING SCAMMED OUT OF YOUR MONEY AND TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. read more

I got a haircut from Taylor a few months ago and I am still getting compliments on the cut today! She was very professional and made great suggestions for the type of cut that I should get for what part of my face shape she could see. The salon was very clean and the space allows for everyone to be spaced out for social distancing. The price was very reasonable as well for my longer hair (a few inches past the shoulder before she cut it). I will definitely be back to get another haircut from Taylor soon. She also recommended a great product for heat protection since I almost always blow dry my hair straight. I have been using the product every week and my hair still looks very healthy. read more

I purchased a Groupon voucher for a root touch up and walked away feeling like I got bare minimum service-meaning I sat down, got my color, barely saw my stylist, got the color washed out and then it was over. Nothing fancy or memorable. I assume it was because I didn't want to upgrade my services, including having my root touch up pulled thru my hair. Blending the roots to my hair would cost extra, which I said nah to. You have to pay beyond the Groupon for full service. As a result, I walked away with semi wet hair and had to ask for dye removal for my forehead and some serum and hairspray to appear somewhat presentable in public. I probably wouldn't come back here again for future services. I originally bought the coupon for a last minute effort before a trip. It's an average place and in general its ok; but it's not a place I'd encourage my friends to make an effort to visit. read more

I've done different kinds of services with Celia (sugaring, lash lifting, eyebrow shaping...) and let me tell you she is great at what she does! She is very patient and explains her process diligently, and makes you feel comfortable in not so comfortable situations (aka sugaring). Britney will have conversations with you or let you sit and relax and silence it's your choice she is so attentive and great with people . I've been coming to Zeka for almost five years, when we moved to the area from out of state. Not knowing a soul in WA, I didn't have anyone that I could ask for recommendations (other than Yelp, of course) so my decision was mostly based on finding a location that was nearby. I'm definitely a creature of habit: once I settle on certain services - such as hairstylists or estheticians - I tend to stick with them, even when I'm not ecstatic about the results. The stars must have aligned when I made my first appointment with Zeka, because I've been a happy customer ever since. I'm inconsistent with my appointments - sometimes they are spaced 12 weeks apart, other times, it's 6 months before I get in again for a haircut. I have 4 kids, I work, and I attend school, so "free time" doesn't make regular appearances on my schedule. I've had other stylists be pretty judgey about my coiffure neglect, fixating on my split ends and outgrown layers, borderline scolding me for not coming in sooner. My most recent appointment, thanks to covid, was a full year after my last one, so you can imagine the state of my hair after that much time. Nancy, my stylist at Zeka, never judges (and she also happens to be the owner of Zeka). She simply removes the scrunchie from my hair, gives it a brushing, and asks what what my thoughts are on how I'd like my hair cut. We talk about what I want to have done, she offers some options for me to choose from, and then she proceeds to cut my hair exactly how we discussed. How many times have you gone into your hairstylist and communicate what you would like done, have them respond with "OK!" and they then proceed to do something completely different? Before I found Nancy, this scenario played out more times than I can count. Yeah, my hairdo may never be featured in a hair fashion magazine, but I have my reasons for why I've chosen my "style" (it's forgiving when it becomes overgrown, it doesn't require complicated styling products or tools, and when all else fails I can still put it in a ponytail). When I leave Zeka, not only am I wearing a style that I'm comfortable with, I'm also happy that my stylist actually listened to my instructions and respected me enough to follow them. I'm not exaggerating when I say Nancy is the best stylist I've ever had. I don't really go for highlights, coloring, or other enhancements, but I have had the color depositing deep conditioning masks and smoothing treatments, which I love. And the split end treatment especially, I'm a convert. Whatever magic potion Nancy uses for that, it is awesome and I highly recommend it. My hair looks freshly cut for weeks after, and it stays smooth and static free. Zeka also has skin care services, and I see Zhenya for everything from eyebrow waxing to facials. She does a fantastic job, and I walk out of her room feeling so pampered. She is also just an all around lovely person. I felt completely safe going in for services during the pandemic. They are taking every precaution, spacing out appointments, spacing out stations, keeping the lobby empty, masking up and making clients mask up, etc. I know getting services like these can feel like a dicey undertaking (my husband's barber shop sure isn't following strict protocols) but if you're looking for a salon that is being diligent about cleanliness and safety, Zeka is your place. read more

My very first visit to Zeka, and I will be back. I've had my hair colored for years. However, because it's also been bleached for the past couple of years, I have a lot of damage and breakage and thinning, so I've let it go for a few months. I explained all this to Nancy and told her I was open to all possibilities. She noted the damaged hair and put in a leave-in treatment to help heal it. She cut it and helped me understand how to work with the differing textures to make it look good (instead of trying to force my hair into a style). Nancy also tells me she'll be able to color it again using a different process. Yes, it's a bit more than I used to pay, but you get what you pay for. I'm glad I went to Zeka, and I'm looking forward to going back again. read more

Daisy is no longer at the salon and they currently do not offer nail services at this time. I was told that they are looking for new people. Kind of wish they let her clients know that she left; instead I called with hopes of a nail appointment for a party in a few days, and had to find someone else on short notice (which is difficult since I'm pretty particular). I did get sugaring by Zhenya recently and it was amazing! She is sooo nice and super sweet. I've gone to her twice now. Id never had sugaring before but she was so great in explaining everything and walking me through the process. I am definitely going back for a 3rd time and will continue to do so. read more

I don't know what it is but I'm kinda impulsive, getting haircuts spontaneously on bad hair days :) whenever i call the girls at zeka, i always get an appointment right that day or the next day and they never turned me away and let me wait ;) this way, i had many stylists and all of them where just Awesome! I was so impressed that one girl even remembered what i told her 8+ month ago and i just have seen her one time. ( i can't even remember what i had for lunch last Sunday) ;) my hair never looked that healthy. Studio is super clean, the staff is all so welcoming and it feels like comming home to a friend, super cozy studio and always something funny to chat about ... i also go there for dermaplaning, skin care and lash lifts! Update to my review. Check out the new Nail Spa - Daisy and Tina are the best. I continue to be impressed with Zeka Salon and Spa. I know with 100% certainty that I can sit down in anyones chair and get what I need done. I have no hesitation in making an appointment. I usually see Monique - she does a fantastic job. The last time I was in I ended up seeing Emily because a regular of Mo's needed to get her hair done for a Homecoming dance. I was totally at ease because I have been going to the salon long enough to know that they are going to get it right. If for any reason something was wrong they would rectify it (this has never happened though...). I'd like to first say that the gal I went to, Kelsey, is incredibly nice and professional. And although I look for these qualities in a wax salon, my number one concern is quality of the waxing. It took an entire hour for a bikini wax and brow wax, which usually gets done in 20-30 mins max. It literally took forever. My brows were terrible- I mean baaaad. None of the lines were straight, and the hair wasn't even cut straight. It cost $23 to do a brow wax and I don't even think any hairs were even gone. I was appalled they even charged me for this. You're better off just going to an Asian nail salon and get much better quality for half the price. Don't waste your money on mediocre- not only that, they didn't even attempt to make things right when I told them my concern. The cashier literally just stood there acting like she didn't hear me. There are too many salons around to waste your time and money here. On Friday, I went for a facial. I had bought Groupons for a number of different salons, just to try out some new places, and I went to Zeka first. I was a little early. The young lady at the counter brought me a green tea and a couple magazines to pass the time. I filled out a bunch of paperwork and was met by Jenn. Jenn walked me downstairs, asking me a bunch of questions about my skin and my concerns. She really seemed to take notes about my answers. She was very professional, very pleasant to talk to, and had great pressure. She did my facial in such a way that really felt like she was trying to learn about what would be best for me. At the end, she addressed all of the concerns that I had started with, and gave me a quick consultation about how I can take care of my main concern, which is scarring. I left feeling refreshed, clean, and confident about how to deal with my scarring. It look a lot of stress away. It's now Monday, my skin still looks amazing enough not to wear more than primer and tinted moisturizer. Jenn gave me a call this morning to check on me. Excellent customer service. today I have that gloominess that is unique to the day after a let down salon experience. I thought I was in good hands but this is why I have trust issues when it comes to hair cuts/colors. She described the look I hoped to achieve and then proceeded to give me basically not it at all. During the consultation I explicitly said i wanted something DIFFERENT, ( I'm tired of the boring, brassy, streaky look of a blonde foil! ) Asked about ombré, darkening the tone, mixing it up!thought we were on the same page when I said COOL TONED or ASHY blonde. I wanted to get away from the same old peppery looking foil job. Well that's exactly what I got. Fuuuuu. My stylist said she was gonna pull out my natural root color and blend it in with a pretty cooler tone, and then proceeded to give me the same tacky foil job that I really don't like. I wish I never came here. the young lady who did my hair- she was a nice person. But she fell very short in execution. I paid for an expensive foil job and I think it looks silly (3+hrs in the chair, no time for haircut...) time to just shave my head and move on lol. read more

Super easy to find, cheaper than just about any other positively reviewed salon I saw, and just as good as the expensive ones. I moved here from Boston a few months ago and have been in desperate need of a haircut since before my move. I'm embarrassed to say it had been well over six months, my hair was dry and split and all manner of lengths, and my bangs were... well, nonexistent. Since I work downtown, I thought, search for places near the office, walk down after work, and bus home. But EVERY downtown salon was far out of my price range. So I searched for places near my home in Lake Forest Park. Came across Salon Zeka, and got a convenient evening appointment for early in the week. Already looking pretty good to me: convenient location, evening hours, an appointment two days after I called... I'm a pretty happy gal. Then Monique happened. And she was AWESOME. Super friendly, casual, genuine. Listened to what I wanted, didn't balk at the shameful condition of my hair, and it was much quicker than I ever thought it would be. She only charged me the minimum amount for a cut, which I thought was generous, as my hair couldn't have been the easiest case she'd ever dealt with. I'd already decided I was definitely going back, then yesterday I got a thank-you in the mail, for $10 off my next cut (what!!), and a note from Monique saying thank you for coming in, she hopes I enjoy my upcoming trip back East and that I have a great time with my sisters. Signs of Spring: birds chirping, sun shining, flowers blooming, the scent of freshly cut grass on my late afternoon runs AND bringing back my highlights after a long winter break. It's that time of the year and time for another visit to see Tara. I love the fact that she takes notes on my visits...for me, this indicates she's attentive and cares about what I want with my hair. I'm impressed with her every time I come to visit...she know about the products she uses and how well they work (she uses the products she recommends). I always have a great time when I come to see her and never feel rushed or putout even when the salon is busy. This time around, I added some high and low-lights to my hair...I love the dimension she's added and feel renewed with the new cut and color...the deep conditioner and protein pack she's recommended during my last cut is doing wonders...I love how soft and manageable it is these days. I've been getting my hair cut at Salon Zeka for about 1 1/2 years now. I had previously gone to a salon in downtown Kirkland and they were great until they became an Aveda salon and doubled their prices. I came to Salon Zeka looking for a good, consistent hair cut at an affordable price. And I found it. I've been going to the same stylist, Tara, the entire time I've been a customer. Tara is AWESOME and I highly recommend her. She gives a good, solid hair cut that is always consistent. Tara takes the time to do it right and always listens to my opinions and comments. She keeps notes from all of my visits and refers back to them as needed. We've become very good friends and have a good time whenever I'm in. Overall, the place is pretty good. The owner and receptionist tend to try too hard to be "upscale" in my opinion, and they can be a bit fake (which I'm not a fan of). If I wanted a whole beauty experience, with tea and massages, I'd go to that sort of a place. Salon Zeka is not some pretentious, upscale salon. They offer affordable hair cuts and colors, etc. and they do it well. All of the stylists there are nice and all seem competent. There doesn't seem to be any turn over, which is something I always look for in a new salon. Salon Zeka is currently undergoing construction to expand the floor plan, but this has in no way hindered their ability to do business. And I was not bothered by the mid-construction environment. They will be hiring a couple more stylists soon and making the place a bit more spacious. It'll look great when they're done, I think. While I would definitely give Tara 5 stars for being so excellent, I'm giving the salon 4 stars for a consistent, reliable business. read more
