Jackaroo Ranch cottage was all of these things! It was perfect. There is a Jackaroo Ranch house on the property as well for larger groups but the cottage was exactly what we wanted, very quaint, cozy, and comfortable. The place was well maintained and very well equipped with dishes, pans, utensils, blankets, etc. And the pillows were so nice, we wanted to take them home with us! Temperature was very pleasant when we were there so no need for heating or cooling but there was an AC unit and heaters as well as electric blankets. There were handy notes around to tell us where the dressings for the couch futon were and what to do with our trash. The owner lives just down the road and left her number in case we needed anything (everything was perfect so we never needed it!) We didn't look before we went to the store so we bought some charcoal but it turns out that there was already coal, lighter fluid, and a lighter in a bin under the grill. It was hard to tell from the limited pictures on the website (we booked through All Wimberely Lodging) exactly how close to the river it was but it was indeed very close and just a quick little stroll down there; there was a table and chairs set up down there where we enjoyed our breakfast and it also happens to be right at the bridge that crosses the river so we were able to easily walk across and hike around on the other side. And at night we'd just turn on the christmas lights and hang out on the porch, listening to the river and the frogs and just chill. I wish I was there right now! It's a little bit out of the town center which makes you feel nice and hidden away but it's just like a 7 minute drive into the cute little downtown area. There is a little parking spot for the cottage that is labeled; I wasn't sure where the parking was going to be and thought maybe we'd have to park by the house or something so this was good. The shower is really small which wasn't the best, I don't know how you're supposed to shave your legs in there! The only other very minor thing is that since you're sharing the grounds, there might be some back and forth with the gate; we would have just left it open for easy entry and exit but the people in the house had dogs so they would close it all the time which was just a tiny bit annoying but obviously not that big a deal. Overall, I highly recommend it and hope we get to come back sometime!

The pods they had were probably from 10 years ago. And please do not leave any personal items there as we did. It's like a tooth extraction to get it back.

On the Buffalo Bend property there are two cabins and the owner's house. The El Sol and the La…read moreLuna are about 75 yards apart. Both cabins have identical interiors and exteriors. However, there are two distinctive differences in the cabins. The El Sol cabin is the second cabin on the road and is a little more secluded. The La Luna has a better view. My wife and I stayed in the El Sol cabin because we wanted more seclusion. The owner of the cabins, Melissa, emails perfect directions and you will need these directions. It's not difficult to find the cabins, but if you didn't have the printed directions you wouldn't be able to locate them. When we arrived at the El Sol cabin, Melissa had just finished checking the cabin. Melissa is extremely nice and told us about a storm had hit them two days prior, so the satellite tv and internet weren't working. This didn't bother us since we never turned on the tv and we used our smartphones for the internet. Either way, both utilities were repaired and running by our second day. Both cabins have wooden floors and consist of a living room/kitchen area, one bedroom, and a bathroom. The living/kitchen area has a wood burning fireplace, tv, sofa, chair, refrigerator, stovetop oven, microwave, coffee pot, and dining table. There are window a/c units in the living room area and bedroom. I don't know how well they work since we didn't need them. They also have ceiling fans in the bedroom and living areas. We were able to sleep with the windows open since the cabins sit high enough for a very pleasant breeze. The bedroom has a queen size bed. My wife and I both thought the mattress was too soft for us. We're not big people, but our bodies formed somewhat of a "valley" in the mattress. Some people like this, but we like some firmness to our mattress. This was our only complaint, if you want to call it that since it really didn't affect our sleep. The bedroom also has a chest to store some of your clothes, end tables, and a clock/radio/alarm. The bathroom does have a suitable place for hanging all your clothes. Also in the bathroom there's a nice size step in shower, a sink, and of course, a toilet. There was plenty of hot water and you don't have to wait long to get the water hot enough for a nice shower. The water supply is collected rain water. Both cabins have their own cisterns and the water is filtered. Showers are nice with the soft rain water and much better than city water. Some people might not enjoy the taste of filtered rain water, more so if they're use to their chemical laden city water. :) We didn't have any issues with drinking the water. Outside, the cabins have plenty of trees. The El Sol is a tad more wooded. Both cabins have a gas grill, outdoor table and chairs, fire pit, hammock, and lounging chairs. There are two rocking chairs on the porch of both cabins. Both cabins have working hot tubs. I think I covered everything you need to know about the cabins. For my wife and I, it was nice to sit on the porch and watch the deer and foxes walking around the cabins. If you want to guarantee yourself seeing some deer, just throw some feed corn a few yards from the cabin porch. You can buy a bag of corn at the Ace hardware store or the feed store in town. My wife and I had a very nice, quiet, and relaxing time at Buffalo Bend. I'm sure we'll plan another stay in the near future.

I received the booking confirmation with instructions that a Saturday arrival needs to go to the courtesy desk at the local grocery store to get the key. We found the grocery store and went in. After several minutes of looking they did not find our envelope with the key or anything with our name on it. They said to just go out there and maybe someone was there. I looked through my emails and found another one that had shown up while we were driving with completely different instructions on how to get in. It said we were to go to the place and the key would be under a planter. We drove out a few miles and found it (difficult to find in the dark) and there were a whole bunch of people around a fire pit, several hammocks hanging in the trees and bicycles all over the place. We did not expect neighbors since that was not clear in the description. We found a small sign and a place to park on the side of the "cottage". We walked up and the key was in the door, not where it said it would be. We unloaded and as we were our neighbors (who were certainly having a good time) came over and said they were going to be there for a few days and join them if we wanted. It was a nice gesture, but not what we were expecting. Needless to say we did not get to use the hot tub, fire pit or enjoy the views as described as it was always too crowded. Later I found the info on the other half of our "private cottage" and says it sleeps 4. They had more than 4 people in there and we could hear them through the walls. The inside was ok. On the table were the rules. I am fine with rules but when they don't apply to the unit you are in it makes things confusing. They mentioned an upstairs (there isn't one), wash the dishes (there is no kitchen and the only sink is in the bathroom), that no firewood could be used, only the fake logs you buy at the store, but that the grill outside could use wood and be used as the fire pit. WHAT? None of this made sense. The bed was very uncomfortable and covered with some kind of plastic that was very loud each time you moved. The cable TV was basic, there was no wifi as described and the instructions on how to use the dvd player were wrong. The coffee maker was disgusting and partially broken. I had to clean it prior to using it and only used it once. We went into town for coffee after that. Kitchenette? Not even close. A microwave and a toaster do not make a kitchenette. There was dirt on the floors, cobwebs in most corners, hair in the drawers of the bathroom cabinets, etc etc. The only views we had were to the bushes, no sweeping views of the valley as described. It was just disappointing. We were told to do the dishes and clean everything before we left, well, we left it better than we found it for sure. We had to purchase paper towels and kleenex as no paper products were provided aside from the roll of toilet paper. This place has potential but really needs to be managed better and the descriptions are very misleading.

They're rustic and quaint, with a lovely porch overlooking nice grounds with a fire pit and covered patio. The reason we're not giving a higher rating has to do with the little things. First, we gave ourselves plenty of time to get there so we could have time to change and get ready for attending a wedding. We couldn't locate the code to get into the cabin because it was sent from an email different from the confirmation email and it went into spam (for everyone in our party). Finally someone found the email and told us what name to search so we could find the email buried in our spam. This could've been easily avoided if the confirmation email mentioned the person the email would be coming from. This set us behind a solid 20 min. Second, when we tried calling the phone number no one answered and no one returned our calls. If you're running a business someone should be available during the stay to assist with small issues that arise. Third, the light over the couch didn't work, we noticed that someone else had reported this issue but it still had not been fixed (and someone labeled her "AKA Karen" in the guestbook for a similar review). But really it's the little details that could easily set this spot apart. There was only one washcloth and one hand towel, not two for two people. They only provided decaf coffee in several of the cabins. Last, for the price we chose a spot in wine country you would think they would have a wine opener or even some wine glasses. This was not a cheap stay so we were all a bit taken aback by the small appointments that were missing.
