There were about 110 people at the show and that filled the place up. Reservations are suggested. No drinks, but if you come early, there are three places next door that have drinks, food and snacks. Come early! Featured are root beer floats with Husky Deli ice cream (a local delicacy) and free range root beer. At least, that's how it's billed. Good sound quality, the great Wurlitzer organ during intermission. There are table side seats up front (cost a bit more) and row seating behind. Seniors get a discount. Fun night! Get on their email list and you'll get notice of upcoming shows (4-8/month).

It was an intimate and most charming performance sprinkled with humor and wanderlust. Formerly Hokum Hall, this non-profit vaudeville-toting venue was built in 1916 and is a neighborhood treasure. Rumor has it: Eddie Vedder played a "secret" show here once. But it's really a dear man named Lou Magor whose been at the helm of this performance space for decades. He's a warm, quirky character who doubles as emcee and master musician and brings a corporate hug to the whole experience. The decor, old framed photos, hardwood floors and (the pièce de résistance) a 1920s Wurlitzer pipe organ create all kinds of nostalgia from eras gone by.. and the tickets are affordable, too. Check out their website for upcoming shows (live music, drama, silent movies, poetry readings and more!) and see why Kenyon Hall is called "West Seattle's Lighthearted Entertainment Palace."

I bought Salsa lessons with Balorico for my wife as a birthday present. We had recently taken a…read morethree week trip to Cuba and fallen in love with Salsa music and dancing and were eager to learn how to dance Salsa ourselves. After doing some research about classes offered in the South Seattle area I landed on Balorico and booked a beginners package with Vanessa Villalobos. At first I really liked Vanessa and was optimistic about what we would learn under her guidance, but would unfortunately find her teaching style frustrating and ultimately discouraging. Vanessa uses a rapid-fire method, introducing a new dance step, running it a few times, and then quickly moving on. I have some experience with dance lessons and am used to strongly incorporating a move into our muscle memory before moving on, which was an opportunity I rarely got with Vanessa. What was increasingly aggravating were her regular proclamations that we were "getting it!" or excited announcements like, "You got it!"... as I looked around at my fellow students that seldom seemed like the case. It was my impression that the majority of my fellow students were equally lost. Overall, I felt very rushed through this course and was so unhappy with it that we didn't even bother to go to the final class. In addition to not feeling like we were being effectively taught Salsa, Vanessa was regularly promoting other classes and events as constantly up-sales. Considering my frustrations with the class this was particularly irksome. I feel the focus should have been on delivering what we had already paid for. Vanessa clearly knows how to dance Salsa and while it was fun to watch her execute moves I don't feel she was very good at passing that knowledge on to beginners. Perhaps her methods are better suited for more advanced students, but I wouldn't recommend her for those starting out.

Thankfully, Balorico came up when I searched for lessons in the West Seattle area. Vanessa (the instructor) really put me at ease from the start (I can be shy and a little neurotic). She is incredibly good at breaking down the steps/movements in ways that are appropriate to your style of learning. She is very good at knowing when one should be challenged further and when to pull back. She pays very close attention to detail and hey, she even laughs at my lame jokes-my partner and I are full of those. How she gets thru a lesson with the two of us I will never know, but we always have a great time and somehow she managed to make us look pretty damn good. It's really cool to see how much pride she takes in what we learn. There is genuine excitement when she sees that we are putting things together. I really can't say enough. We got a lot of compliments on our dance and that was really cool, but even cooler still is the fact that I can't wait to learn more.

As the class progressed, it was pretty obvious that I needed some help but either the kind of hands-on help I needed wasn't part of the program or the instructor didn't "get it." After trying 4 different balls of clay over the course of an hour or so, I was very frustrated at not being able to get very far in the process with any of them. I tried to get help from the instructor but he seemed more interested in other people and seemed to think that saying how to work with the clay was all that was necessary. On top of the frustration on the creative side, the class was instructed on how dismantle and wash/clean the wheel and other equipment we had been using (and that had, I think, been used for an earlier class). Not a good experience for which the cost was $100.

The class offerings are really fun and there are tons of hours for open studio practicing all week long. The studio is set up so well with all the supplies you need. Deb, the owner and reknown ceramicist, continues to improve the studio layout and information sharing on our community app. She obviously takes feedback seriously and strives to continually improve the experience. We're very lucky to have this top quality studio for learning in the West Seattle area.
