During my consultation she listened to how I wanted my hair as well as what I didn't like on my previous hairstyle (done someplace else). She did a phenomenal job cutting, coloring, and styling my hair. She wasn't pushy with any of the hair products either, she gave suggestions and I really appreciated everything. good morning I have an appointment today at 5 PM with kara but I'm going to have to cancel. I haven't been to a salon in many months I went there because I had a coworker that worked there that gave me a great haircut. He no longer works there. I walked in because I haven't done anything to my hair in a few months feels like yrs and because the highlight experience has been unsatisfactory I always now get a consultation. I walked in and your excellent customer service oriented young man in the front he has long hair up to shoulders curly hair was alwrt and very professional. Not only did he hear me out he booked me right away for a consultation as I needed one too my not so past experiences. I walked in after work after a pedicure with sandals on bright sweater I work for the department of juvenile corrections for WI Dept of Corrections I actually came from a mini spa it was really relaxing he booked me with a young lady. She heard me out kind of firm serious looking face but I was a bit excited and desperate to finally do something to my hair. She heard me babble about what I have been done and really needed. I think she understood what I wanted we booked then she said she wanted to quote me the price normally customers ask for this I was more concerned with getting my hair done right finally. She came back with a $205 quote I do have Long hair up to my Bottom and I am used to paying over $150 plus she bent over and whispered what it was a little bit condescending I was taken back. I ignored because I wanted my hair done. Then she gave me a 5 o'clock appointment pretty late but she said that's all she had. I told her OK not only am I Retired military and get a pension I get paid pretty decent working for the state of Wisconsin. I left uncomfortable with a feeling like she wanted me to cancel or with an option of "a lady I don't think you could afford it" gut feeling. Not comfortable. I would like to cancel not only can I afford it but it's more important for ME to be at peace and enjoy a haircut regardless of the cost. I looked up the cost for partial foil on your website the gloss she recommended a haircut it didn't come out to $205 but willing to pay. But I cant with the uncomfortable feeling. I'm not an idiot I've been around the block with my hair since I was 13 years old and it's always been long dark brown healthy. and costy but not the way it was approached by Kara - uncomfortable. I went in for a gel manicure. The cuticle part was quite painful, there was no oil or water soak used, causing a pretty painful experience and also for them to become quite split the next day. The person who did my manicure did say she had a long day, but had said a couple things throughout the visit that were quite out of line, making that part uncomfortable. My nails didn't dry fully, causing them to smudge before I even got home, and chipped the next day. I do believe that the salon does have potential and maybe not every experience would be like this but for how painful the manicure was, and that they were smudged and chipped not even 24 hours after being done, I cannot recommend, not to mention the prices were a little steep. read more

You can tell she genuinely cares about her clients, and takes the time to figure out a color and cut that works best for each individual. I cannot express how thankful I am, to have crossed paths with Alisha. My hair stylist came down with COVID, and I really wanted to get my hair done for my birthday. So I did some research and scheduled an appointment with Alisha. I was informed it was her last day working at the salon. So I was worried as a new client, maybe she would have cancelled my appointment or rushed my hair. My worries were quickly put to rest. My experience was amazing, thoughtful and personalized. I felt comfortable and cared for! Alisha doesn't just have technical skills that some would kill for, but she has a personality that is welcoming and comforting! First hair cut here, and it won't be my last. It's clean, comfortable, and friendly staff. My stylist was April, and she did a great job. She listened to me and worked with me to figure out what looked best, which ended in a great cut. The conversation was pleasant as well. I'm new in town and April told me about live jazz no cover at a hole-in-the-wall downtown that I'll definitely have to check out. Off to a good start Mad-town! One of the hardest part about moving to a new area is finding a good stylist. It's been a year now that I've moved from Chicago to Madison and I think after going around the block with various Aveda salons in the area, I have found my salon-home at Anaala  (Hilldale location). I recently had some not so awesome highlights done and was really upset of how my hair was looking. Josh is the stylist that was appointed to me to "do" the job. From the moment of shaking Josh's hand I felt comfortable. He really spent a lengthy amount of time with my consultation of the details of what was going to happen through the process of my color correction. Josh is so professional, kind and really so very talented. I highly recommend Anaala Salon and Josh as your stylist and color expert!!!!! I've enjoyed being a client at Anaala over the past couple years. The atmosphere is calming and it's always very clean. I've bounced around stylists, but I especially like April. On my most recent visit today, April took the time with our consultation and did an amazing job! I screwed up my blonde color with at-home hair dye, but April took the time to fix everything and bring back my blonde perfectly. She took her time with my foils and knows what she's doing. She even took the time to explain to me how toner interacts with hair color and why I was getting weird results at home. I would definitely recommend April at the Hilldale location- especially for blondes who want their highlights to come out seamlessly. read more

To say that I recommend Anaala is a severe understatement. In particular, Marissa is hands down the best stylist I have ever to in my life. This place is absolutely phenomenal. I do not write reviews very often, but I have never felt more motivated to write one than this. I had never had my hair colored before, and impulsively decided it was time to make a change this weekend. I chose a salon purely based on the fact that they could get me in on short notice, and the results were incredibly disappointing. In short, I had very over-processed roots that were bright orange on top of an otherwise unchanged head of hair. I called Anaala on Sunday morning, knowing full well I would not be able to get in, but hoping they would have something I could purchase or some tips as to how to rectify the situation. The receptionist was incredibly kind and understanding on the phone and, after checking with the stylist, somehow managed to squeeze me into an already full day. I arrived later that afternoon to see Marissa, who I was hoping would have enough time to correct the orange. Not only did she manage that, but she somehow managed to send me out the door with a color that not only looked incredibly close to the original picture I had referenced, but arguably better. She spent a generous amount of time discussing where my hair started, what had been used to cause the orange, and what steps would be involved in correcting it (highlights, toner, and a gloss). It was very clear that she was incredibly experienced and knew exactly what she was talking about. I trusted her completely, and am so glad that I did. From the moment I walked in the door to when I left, I had nothing but a positive experience here. The space is beautiful, everyone is kind, and the fabulous and cruelty-free Aveda products are the sugar on top of a very large sundae. If you're on the fence about where to schedule, just take my advice: Go to Anaala, and ask for Marissa. read more

A very nice salon in Madison. I went here for the first time to get a haircut. I was skeptical of paying so much (prices range per stylist, the cheapest is $40) for just a haircut. It's a good bargain because all products are Aveda, the space feels high-end, and the stylists are very experienced. My stylist, Jordan, was very good and did exactly what I asked for and more. But, one thing was that my stylist didn't really try to talk to me. It seemed like she was just getting the job done and wasn't very personable. When I started a conversation she was nice but didn't seem to want to talk. It was the quietest hair appointment I've ever had. It's nitpicky but for the price of the haircut plus a 15% tip I think it's fair to expect a slightly less awkward experience. She did a good job, but good customer service makes the difference between an okay experience and a great experience. read more

I've had better haircuts and styles for more than half the price I paid. I don't understand when someone says "no more than an inch" a couple inches are clipped away. I can't glue the hair back but can certainly cut more if it's too long. Plus, whatever happened to shaving the neck of hair when the cut is too short? The complimentary services listed on the website are non-existent--regardless of stylist level. Also, Aveda itself may not test on animals but Estee Lauder (parent company) does! read more

The service here was so slow that I spent most of my time mentally writing this review. I swear I heard my therapist reading a magazine while I was supposed to "relax and meditate" for the 14th time in a single service. I have been to many spas all over the country and the world, and this was a joke. I received, at best, 2 hours worth of treatment spread across 4 hours. One staff member even commented that she was "taking her time" since I wasn't scheduled to leave yet. The actual spa treatments were mediocre and extremely overpriced - the facial felt hesitant and vague, the nail treatment just ok and overly saturated with conversation at the expense of activity. I've paid half as much for far better service at other Madison venues. The facility looks good from the front, but everything in the "inner sanctum" is worn and even damaged. Many areas had equipment unplugged and scattered on chairs and couches, the walls showed nicks and the upholstery featured cracks. Most worrisome, no sanitization regimen was in evidence for the blades/tools used in the nail treatment area - tools were pulled out of a personal kit. The strangest thing about this spa is the music: it ranges from soothing classical, to trance techno, to bollywood, to korean pop. Not very relaxing, overall. I will never return to this spa - it is overpriced, poorly run, and offers little visual appeal. read more

Just had a fabulous shellac manicure from Kara. My nails look fabulous, the salon is beautiful and the price is right. So many places these days charge to remove your shellac (which is ridiculous) but not Anaala. I'll definitely be back to see Kara. read more

I go here for waxes and am always happy with how they turn out. They can usually get me in the same day I call to get a brow wax which is great because I usually don't plan ahead. The estheticians do a great job and are very professional and easy to talk to. We use Aveda hair products at my house and we generally get them at the Aveda store at West Towne but have occasionally picked them up here because it's closer (again I'm not a planner so it's usually a last-minute decision). I think the prices for the products are the same. read more

Love love love this place! Tried them out with a cut before my wedding. Anna was great and did just what I wanted. I also used her for another cut and highlights a few days before my ceremony and they just turned out amazingly. For my big day I had my short hair done by (forgive me) I believe Courtney. She did such a wonderful job. I had a trial run a month before so I knew I wanted more curls and she just created the most timeless romantic look! My makeup was done by Ari and I was also thrilled. It was expensive for me to do all this but I just wanted to feel stunning for my wedding and I did. I should also mention that my wife also had her hair and makeup done for the day and she was equally as gorgeous. I wish I had another reason to get all dolled up again. I went here three times, with the 2nd and 3rd visits to fix the 1st and 2nd. I moved from out of town and was looking for a new stylist and colorist. On the first visit the base color was ok, but the bialage was done in sheets vs small sections, so it didn't look natural at all. And the cut was noticeably uneven. The 2nd time I went to someone else to match my base outgrowth and to straighten the cut. The base color WAS NOT AT ALL the same as the previous visit, even though I was assured she knew what the gal used last time (my base was literally orange) - even though I told her I needed it pretty light so my gray outgrowth isn't noticeable in a week and I told her what color my previous colorist used. None of that registered. The stylist noticed it wasn't a good color but let me leave anyway. I don't know how that happened. She evened up my hair but started using a thinning sheers before I stopped her. First of all, any stylist should know that is not the tool for thick wavy hair, and second of all, it's a short cut that a talented stylist shouldn't need to use. I went back a 3rd time to fix the base from the orange to blond and I was met with "so it was too warm for you?" as if it was my indecision vs. having been done wrong. I tried again to make sure it was the right base and she couldn't match it up on her own. It's way too dark and within a week my root outgrowth is showing. I'm not at all happy. read more

Kara has been doing my hair for years and I'm really impressed by her. She has a lot of technical knowledge about the chemistry of hair processing, how it actually works, and is able to make really astute recommendations based on what you already have going on with your hair. Clients often come to her with an idea or a picture of what they want and Kara is able to figure out if that style/color will work for that particular client's texture of hair, skin tone, and face shape. She is honest and tactful while respecting the client's wishes. She gets to know how much time or energy a client is willing to spend on their daily hair routine and recommend styles that accommodate that. Now that I've written this review I realize all my appointment times are going to be taken...sigh. read more

Wow, this salon is horrendous. I wrote a google review and apparently they took that one down. Also don't bother answering their inquiry after your appointment, as they won't get back to you after you tell them you did not like their service. They don't greet you at the entrance. They have no clue what balayage is, and instead I got some ugly looking thin highlights. I paid $220 for a 2 hour experience with hair pulling, hot air on my scalp and then walked out if there with flat hair, not even a head massage. I wasn't even asked if I wanted my hair curled. I hate the way my hair looks, it looks super unnatural and fake. I had booked balayage, but that is not what I got. Don't bother going here. read more

I went in for a balayage and it didn't turn out how I expected it to look. The hairstylist was nice but she didn't give me the silver hair I wanted and instead gave me a full head of a brown-ish color. I went in a second time and met up with a different hairstylist to fix what she did but only came out with a few silver strands. Honestly, I just wished they used better judgement on the courses of action they took for this. I would've appreciated it if they had actually fixed my hair to make me happy but not I'm stuck with this awful silver and brown/blonde mesh. Will never return here again. read more

I love this place! I go here for regular haircuts, as well as manicures and pedicures. Everyone working there is professional, but still relaxed. I'm not a fan of salon/spa's where you feel like you are out of place right when you walk in - this place feels like home. April is 100% 5 stars and more - I'be been going to her for many years. However, when they moved locations (Hilldale) they selected a spot with hardly any parking. Why this matters? First, the street parking is 2 hours and a coloring and cut is 3 hours - so you risk a very expensive parking ticket if you park anywhere nearby. Second, in the winter when it is below freezing or a polar vortex - if you want to get product and just run in and out, it really becomes a hike in freezing cold weather and I have started just going to most any other salon to get product. If I could give this a zero, I would. I am SO irritated at my experience today. I scheduled an appointment on an important day for myself (Birthday), because I have raised 3 kids on my own and finally wanted to do something nice for myself for once. First, they didn't tell me that they changed locations, (their voice mail days they are still at Hilldale; and according the young lady who was going to be doing my hair, they have been at the location for 3 years). So here I am walking up and down the open mall in the cold at Hilldale mall looking for the salon. I called them and was told they had moved :/.... So I run a little late to my appointment, and got booked with a new stylist. No problem with that, as she was very nice. The trouble again started when sue stepped away to mix the color for my hair (one solid color), and she was gone 25 minutes when I decided to get up and go to the front desk to find out what's taking so long (I realize she is new, but I would expect to wait that long if I had been getting my hair done at a school, not at the legit salon where I am about to throw down some bigger bills). I immediately got an attitude from the young lady at the front desk; she shook her head back and forth and opened her eyes wide and with a snarky tone said to me "yeah, she's mixing your color". I didn't appreciate that. By this time it is 27 minutes in, no stylist. I go to sit down and the "manager" comes up to me and in our dialogue, never once apologized, nor offered up any solution, just continued to push it back on me about running a little late (due to their lack of sharing the updated location information), and how the woman is new. She was no help whatsoever. A Managers job is to oversee that the clients are being taken care of and happy; we as clients are the ones paying their bills. Hmm I didn't enjoy my hair cut experience at all. When she was blow drying my hair. She used a paddle brush with force I felt like I was getting tortured. She dug the bristle of the brush deep into my scalp and pulled out on each time. Like a pissed off mom doing her kids head and she secretly hates the child. Sometimes it came close to my face. But she didn't give s fuck. And she a master stylish with no compassion. I still tipped her 15% felt bad for her. Maybe she hates her job?! I usually go to B salon in Chicago. They are all Asians and they are so gentle and I feel RELAXED!! Gosh I always have a great experience with asian hair stylist. Also when I was in NYC, this asian stylish was super. They understand my asian hair too I guess. Will continue to go to Chicago frm now on. And it's much cheaper to like $35? And they take their time. I paid $68 for torture at this place for a simple cut. Never coming back to this joint again ever. read more

I stopped going here because the customer service kept getting worse and worse. The receptionists tend to be rude and treat you like you're an inconvenience, and there is nowhere to wait for your appointment other than 2 wooden stools plopped in the middle of the retail area. And this is important because you generally have to wait quite a while for your appointment. I had a stylist standing out at the front chatting with a friend who had come in to visit for at least 10 minutes past my appointment time, and then when she took me to the chair, it was covered with hair from the previous client (which she did not brush off, I had to do it myself with my hand). Then she told me that she was going to have to rush through my haircut because she was running behind schedule (due to her giggle fest with her friend) and made a rude comment about my appearance. The salon is also not well-kept- there is hair all over the place, and there are huge brown stains from hair dye on the benches where you sit waiting for your color to set (it's been there for 2 years at least). The stylists also don't dress professionally and I had one who had clearly just finished a smoke break, and my hair ended up smelling like smoke when she was done. I've also had massages, manicures, and a facial here, and none of them were very good either. The massage therapist is really really nice, but she doesn't do that great of a job of getting knots out (kind of like she's too timid to really work the muscles). I went to Hilldale for a couple of years and it just kept getting worse and worse until I switched to the Atwood location (which is MUCH better). I will NOT be going back to Hilldale, though. read more

I had an awful experience at this place.For starters, my stylist had her bikini waxed while I sat under a dryer for way too long-super unprofessional. The staff was stuck up and unfriendly. I paid a lot more that I typically am willing to for a cut and color, and my hair did not look any different. My roots were still showing when I left the salon. The cut was okay but nothing special. I recently went to Anaala after having someone outside of Anaala cut my longs layers into a blunt bob. Which wasn't what I asked for. I asked for a long bob that came down in the front with bledned bangs and I did not get that until I went to Anaala. Jessica H cut my hair and she did a wonderful job! She knew exactly what I wanted. I made an appointment a few days ago for a haircut this afternoon. I took off from work early in order to get to my appointment. When I arrived, I was informed by the receptionist that there must have been a "computer error," that they had no record of my appointment. She told me that I was the 3rd person who had had that happen to them today. She offered me an appointment 45 minutes later, but that did not work for me. When I informed her that it had been hard for me to find time to schedule this appointment and that I had left work early for it, I got a shoulder-shrug and a half-hearted apology. I was so excited to try this salon for a haircut. My appointment with stylist named April was at 2:30pm. I arrived early and patiently waited. As I was reading a magazine I then realized I have been waiting for 20-25mins and April was still not ready. I'm beyond annoyed!!! What's the point in making an appointment when you have to wait almost 30 mins to get a haircut? So ridiculous!!!! It's very rude to have someone wait that long!
