I booked my first visit to this salon after reading very positive reviews online. I went in for a haircut and balayage. I showed a picture and brought in physical hair extensions in the red shade I wanted. I was never told my desired color was not possible. The resulting job left my hair looking similarly close as when I walked in (another shade of brown). I immediately stated to the dresser that the result was far from what I had requested. The owner (Karla) made a comment about how at least they're not having me walk out with horrible hair. That was completely off-putting since I never expect to leave the salon looking horrible nor do I ever spend my money with that outcome as a goal. Karla offered to have me come back in so they could tone it. I would rather take my money to a place that can get close to what I want the first time around, and if not, not being defensive about their own wrong doing. Total service cost before tip was $255, which is a ludicrous amount to charge if you didn't deliver. No discounts were offered which is very upsetting and tells me this business is lacking integrity. There needs to be transparency - If a hair stylist doesn't possess the knowledge or skills to achieve clients desired color, that needs to be stated from the start. I would rather know that up front so that other possible arrangements can be made and if that is not possible then I can go elsewhere. Going to this salon was such a waste of time, money and energy. This place is awesome. I didn't get my hair cut for 10 years (yes, a whole decade) and I was nervous coming back into a salon. I decided to come here and I'm so glad I did. My hair looks and feels healthier than ever and I'm happy with how it looks for the first time since I don't know when. Megan was wonderful and also the nicest person on the planet. The other stylists were also kind and friendly -- the atmosphere is welcoming and just lovely. I also walked out with a haircut without breaking the bank. As someone who hates the salon generally, I would totally come back here. If you want to get your hair done in Madison, give Paisley a call -- they are great. First off, I must commend Paisley for making the process of setting up an appointment online so simple. Based off of my online booking experience, it seems that the stylists are often booked up well in advance, so if there is a particular stylist you want, be sure to book early! I didn't have a particular preference since I was a first-timer at Paisley, so I just took whatever open slot was available. My stylist for the day was Janna. She was really sweet, and she did a great job with what I asked her to do. When I sat down in her chair, my hair was super uneven and grown-out and Janna helped me even out the sides and fix my layers. I really appreciated that she took extra care in making sure my hair was even, because it had been bugging me for a really long time! I didn't really like the way my hair flipped outwards after it was blow-dried, but it looked really great after I straightened it! For $36 + tip, I got a better hair cut than I expected. read more

This salon is full of very friendly folks! I first came to this salon because I had a gift certificate. It is an Aveda salon and the staff is on top of new trends and products. I have a preferred stylist but they all are excellent and have referred a few friends to them. Haircuts usually start with a massage and a consult of what is being done. I've been getting color added to my hair, so I miss the massage, but my hair has never looked better. The prices are reasonable. Booking appointments online is really easy. It is alway good to schedule ahead so you get the time slot you want, especially if you prefer a particular person. It is not a big salon but that is what I like. It feels personal and warm. We came in as a bridal party of 6 + Bride + 2 Mothers in a 2.5/3hr window of time. That's a lot of hair in not a lot of time. I ended up being the last woman to get my hair styled and I came with zero suggestions or opinions. We were running low on time so I told them to do "something", anything that could be done to get us out of the door on time. Two different stylist worked with me. One to do the prep-curls and one to do the up-do. They did a wonderful job and I got lots of complements throughout the night. I'm not from Madison and won't have an occasion to visit Paisley Hair Design again but I truly enjoyed the visit and the experience. read more

I got a haircut with Janna today, and it was absolutely wonderful! The products she used in my hair smelled fantastic, and she gave me exactly the cut I was hoping for. She was super sweet to talk to. I've always had positive experiences here, but this one was so great I just had to leave a review! I came in with a few pictures, and she took the time to full up a few pictures of her own so that we could really nail down the perfect cut. I saw Allie for color and a trim this last week. She is a super cool and lovely person and I basically enjoyed my time there. I kinda liked what she did but am not sure I will go back for several reasons. OK, first what I liked: nice atmosphere. Allie, as I said is super nice and basically makes you feel comfortable. My hair looked pretty good, not completely what I asked for but the color was a good caramel for my roots and that was partly what we discussed. What I did not like: The overall sheen was not brighter-although I specifically said brighter not darker. The caramel highlight combo mix left me looking darker overall. But that is not really a problem because I could share that with her if I went back and I am sure she would respond well. What I really did not like is how she blow dried and hot ironed my hair. To properly hot iron a person with frizzy hair, you must go more slowly down the shafts. She went quiclkly, and that will not straighten anything out. Before hot ironing, when you blow dry, you must be slower and use a downward trajectory, so the hair doesn't stick straight out from a head. I left looking like Donna Summer in 1974, with BIG hair. I would hope she had a sense of how I do my hair because I came in with beachy waves and more controlled hair in order to for her to see how I do my hair. Granted frizzy hair is no easy but many pro have known right away what to do. I had to work right after, so I ran home and had to restyle with a hot iron in the 15 minutes before work. I would have loved to have left the salon looking better, usually that's the case-I can usually even go for 2-3 days after most salon hairstyles feeling great. One last thing, I wanted 1/2 to 1 inch cut off, I think she took off closer to 2 inches. My hair is curly that when left curly, it looks a lot shorter, and to be fair to Allie, I really need three inches off, but because I was going to a special occasion the next week, I specifically asked for less trimmed off. Ok, these next things I am mentioning are really nit picking but worth mentioning. I also would have liked being asked if I wanted something to read while I waited for my color to take effect etc. I would have liked being asked-since this is an Aveda salon, for some nice Aveda tea, I was looking forward to that. Most salons offer something to drink. These last things are little but they are things one looks forward to because you should feel a little pampered at a salon-life is hard and when you spend $250 on a service it is nice to feel relaxed and a little pampered as well as leaving feeling looking really great. I was so self conscious about the Donna Summer look, that I put my hair in a band on the walk home. By the way being asked if you want a hand mirror so you can see the back of your hair is also a nice thing - that also didn't happen. However even with all of this, Allie is super good at what she does, and is a nice person, so with a few tweaks, I would not be adverse to going back to her in the future. Perhaps I should have asked "do you have magazines?", "Can you go slower with the iron so my hair is more in control and turn for a beach wave?" but I was a little in shock as one sometimes one is in these situations. read more

Love this place! Megan is awesome! She's like the holy grail of stylists. She listens to you, but applies her expertise to help you come up with the best style for you. She takes into account your hair type, how much maintenance, etc. She also has the lightest touch. It's like watching a butterfly. No tugging or pulling...in fact, she has such a light touch, I'm barely aware that she is cutting my hair. I also find this salon a comfortable place to be, easy to get to and park. I love this place! I've been coming here for a couple of years and love the experience they give you. I get my hair cut by Kim and she is fantastic. I'm always impressed by her ability to interpret my confused and overly general hair cut requests. I always leave happy! They give you a scalp massage before your cut, a nice hair wash and they style your hair a little after your cut. Also, they use really nice hair products. You can make appointments on their website, which I always utilize, but you can also call to make appts. read more

I've been going here since I moved to Madison for school. Brooke has given me the best haircuts I have ever had. My hair looks as good after 4 weeks as it did the day I got it cut, which is something I've never experienced. This place is great! They get a good mix of students (mostly graduate students) and locals from the area. I would also say that they cater to almost a 50/50 ratio of men/women. All of the stylists are friendly and seem to do a great job with all their clients. I have never heard anyone complain about their hair while I have been there. Prices are fairly reasonable for a place that does a great job. I have gotten my hair cut and colored and have always been happy with the results. I think it should also be noted that they have always started my appointments on time. I have gone to other salons where you show up for an appointment and the stylist is running behind, this has never been an issue here. read more

I came to Paisley after a really rough haircut that left my hair really short and lopsided. I was several months into growing out the damage, and I was really scissor-shy but it needed at least a trim to clean it up before the holidays. I'd read just about every Yelp review and Facebook review, and I opted for a cut with Allie just to try and fix the ends and maybe help even it out. I didn't expect to come away with a style, just maybe a little cleaner of a cut. But wow. She. Was. Wonderful. She listened so carefully and put me at ease right away - my cut is incredible! This was my first time at Paisley Hair Design. I won't return. My stylist never introduced herself, only glanced at the picture I brought, and didn't style it at all. It was a big hair change, and shame on me for not getting a trim here before asking for a major cut. But other Aveda-affiliated salons have always been positive experiences for me, and yelp reviews were so high, I just went for it. And I left the salon feeling ugly. After getting home I washed and tried to style it with different products, but it's just a bad cut. A short cut, too, so it will take some awkward growing time before going elsewhere. read more

I wanted to try the ombre hairstyle - where darker hair fades into a lighter color. I made an appointment, showed the stylist some pictures and said I wanted my ombre hairstyle to be subtle. My hair can be "stubborn" so when she finished, the color really hadn't shown up at all. It wasn't that I thought it looked bad; it's just that I paid $100 for unnoticeable color. Even people who knew I was getting my hair dyed that day could not tell. Anyway, I called the Paisley and they were gracious enough to let me come in and have it re-done (the owner was very nice). I wish I hadn't done that. We agreed to go 1 shade lighter since the other shade didn't show up but when I left after that appointment I had this awful shade of orangey-brassy-blonde. And it did not "fade" from my dark hair to the blonde this time. There is a pretty clear line where my hair was dyed and where it wasn't- not at all what I had in mind. Since I was already there for the 2nd time and my stylist was running late (she couldn't even dry it) I didn't bother to complain again or go back for a 3rd time. I had to get it fixed somewhere else. Now I regret even having my hair done in the first place. I think it's a good salon but I'd make sure to pick a stylist with a ton of experience doing exactly what you want done. read more
